Earls’ intent, Richt’s predix & Donley’s dilemma
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A couple leftovers from the Pigskin Preview, and a detail or two beyond.
Correy Earls, whom you might remember suffered a frightening head/neck injury trying to throw a block for Taylor Bennett on a crucial fourth down late in the Virginia game last season, is penciled in as a starter at WR. I think you can use pen. He and Demaryius Thomas will be the starting WRs unless something strange happens.
He left the field on a board, and was hospitalized overnight after that. “I still remember the situation very vividly. It’s something that will never be forgotten, but I’m not worried at all,” he said. “It won’t be something that I’ll take to the field with me. If I was put in the same situation, I would probably do the same thing again. It wouldn’t make me think twice.
“It’s all in the game of football. You can’t wonder, What if? You have to just play hard, and leave the rest up to God.”
Another WR, James Johnson, suffered a bunch of injuries last season, and may have taken a shot or two that he can’t forget. He left the sport. To each his own. This is not a ringing endorsement, nor an indictment. Football can be a very unforgiving game, huh? Each person processes his experience differently, sometimes very differently.
“They said it was a minor spinal injury and a concussion. I remember they did tests all through the night. All I remember is they were waking me up every 30 minutes or every hour to make sure this was moving and that was moving,” Earls said.
How would you like that to be one of your dominant memories of a game you love?
Moving on …
Georgia coach Mark Richt, who called in via teleconference from the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., said he’s glad the Bulldogs will play Tech last in the regular season to better get a read on coach Paul Johnson’s offense.
“You don’t know what [approach] is going to work for the talent that he has so we’ll have a good idea of what to prepare for, and we’ll have an open date [before the game] that’s going to help us,” Richt said. “We’ll have a chance to see what they’re going to hang their hat on, and I think that’s going to help.”
And on again …
This will be old news for some of you, but I heard a few days ago that D.J. Donley is back, attending summer school at Tech. He still wants to transfer, and needs to get some academic work done at Tech in order to do so. I do not believe he’s working out with former teammates. I don’t think he’s interested in playing for Tech. Simply put, he does not like Atlanta or Tech the way it was explained to me. No significant problem with the football program exactly, just the city and academic environment. He has work to do to become eligible to transfer. It’s no lock.
Going on vacation Saturday until July 7th or so. Then, practice will be three-plus weeks away. Hard to believe.
Matt

Matt, I know this may seem nit-picky, but Earls’ injury happened on a 3rd down. I remember the play because I was watching the former staff make (in my opinion) a huge tactical blunder at a critical point in the game. Admittedly, it was very, very scary to see Earls’ laying motionless on the field. All the players were gathered nearby to watch as the trainers and med staff attended. At some point, the coaching staff needed to get the guys ready to play (a critical play) and they didn’t. Chan decided to go for it, which was the right call; however, a linemen jumped off sides and Tech was assessed a 5 yard penalty. (And this is were the blunder occurred) Chan (un-characteristically) went for it anyway, Bennett gets sacked… two plays later VA connects on a long-one. Ballgame! I am optimistic we won’t see this from the new staff.

On THAT PLAY, Taylor Bennett actually made the 1st down but Chan was too blind/stupid to challenge it.
I mean, he clearly made the 1st down.
Quick question: Did Chan ever get a single call REVERSED during his time on the Flats?

I believe you are correct. It was third down.

I agree that Chan made the right call to go for it on fourth down, however the lineman that jumped ofsides was Freshman Defensive End Derrick Morgan and I do not think putting a freshamn defensive end (who had merley practiced in that formation)in that situation was the correct call. Congratulations to Corey, not many people get to come back form injuries of that nature. It is truely a blessing.

Some friends and I traveled to that game. All I can say is that all the UVA fans we encountered coming out of the stadium (alumni and current students included) were VERY warm regarding the inicident. Almost everyone said that they hoped “our guy” would recover and play again soon. There was no smack talk or any “Charlotesville curse”…just pats on the back and “glad to see he was okay” “hope he gets better” and even a “thanks for coming!”. Love UVA’s fans. They made the situation so much nicer than it would’ve been somewhere else!

Hey Carolina Jacket - the operative phrase in your post is, “we WATCHED the dawgs lose…”. That would be you and the GT baseball team as well. And before any of you go off on me (a dawg fan) for posting on your blog, the headline listed Richt as a topic so I took that as an invitation to drop in.

c.q. dropping in and posting, more less the lecture overrules the lame excuse. I did enjoy watching the tears in the UGA dugout after the cocky showing of your rear end most of the tournament. Even the announcers noted the hyper cheer leading from the Georgia dugout had gone into a funk.

It is good news about Corey Earls and am glad he is doing well. It appeared as though James Johnson was shell shocked because of some of the hits he took. I do wish him and D.J. Donley well. We shall see what the last game of the regular season brings. At least there is some excitement. Enjoy your vacation Matt.

Obviously Matt wanted someone to actually read this blog so he added a Mark Right to the title of a story that was put out yesterday. I am happy that Mr. Earls is ok and happier that D.J. Donley left Tech. He is the first big name player from Charlton Co. to come to Tech, and hopefully the last.

Once again Tech is left to live vicariously through other teams. Different sport, same story. Get owned by UGA and then hope and pray somebody else can do your dirty work for you. Well, Fresno State got it done. The same mid major Fresno State that made you look like a high school team in your bowl game. The same Fresno State that probably doesn’t have half of Georgia Tech’s talent on the baseball field and nowhere near the same amount of resources. They got it done. They beat Georgia. They didn’t sit around and hope somebody else would do it. They did it themselves. What a novel concept eh Tech fans?

No reason to cut down the Dawgs. They are competing at the highest level in almost every sport they play. As much as I hate to say it UGA continues to improve in their athletic program while Tech seems to decline. Tech has taken the back seat now in golf, baseball, and even mens basketball.

He is absolutely correct in infering that from present forward gt may never ever, ever, ever, watch their own team in a big game. Such is the state of decline in tech athletics. He is correct. You are not.

How quick we are to call everything a trend. A good class of kids coming through your football program and a few other sports does make an athletic program look good, especially with popular coaches and devoted fans. Go ahead, celebrate like you should. At the same time a program at a smaller school with fewer fans and less money catches a couple tough breaks and looks bad by comparison. But calling either of these a trend is a little short-sighted. Are you a GA fan? Sure you are. Does that mean you hate Tech? Of course it does. Should you stop being objective about your observations? Only if you want people to think you daft. Now go run along and bark at things while drunk like a good puppy!

I read the article b/c of the Richt reference, being a Dawg fan, but was glad to hear that Earls is doing well. It seems like he has a great attitude as well. As for most of the comments about this article, I can’t believe most of you got in to UGA or GT. Anybody with any brains knows that you have to give UGA credit for the CURRENT state of most of the athletic programs, but don’t ever get to arrogant, b/c upsets happen all the time in college athletics. Duhhh, did we not just watch the College World Series, or the SEC b-ball tourney in March? And as for the GT fans taking joy in the UGA baseball loss and throwing out baseless intelligence level insults to UGA fans, GROW UP & GET a LIFE. Oh, and by the way, I turned down my full ride academic scholarship to GT to double major at UGA and could humble you quickly with my income level.

Hey Dogs,
When it comes to college baseball you’re like the Marlins, and we’re the Braves. You’ve had a couple of good runs, but it the grand scheme we are still viewed as the powerhouse (postseason 24 of last 25 years, most players in MLB from one school), and you are a flash in the pan (9 postseason apperances ever, any MLB players?). And Newnandawg, if you’re so smart and rich, why do you live in Newnan?

ViningsGT,
Because I operate my business from home, and I’m smart enough to know that my house in Vinings on several less acres would be several hundred thousand more than I paid for it. I also enjoy the lack of traffic and being close to my husband’s family, who also live on the south side. I have lived in East Cobb and Buckhead as well, and prefer the country setting. Also, my comments were to say that “I’m so great,” merely to point out that you never know why people go different schools, and there are smart people and idiots at both UGA and Tech, as evidenced by many of the posts on both blogs.
By NewnanDawgCF

NewnanDawg, I applaud you for being able to work from home. I work in the city but live in the country in Villa Rica on 7 acres away from the traffic and the idiots. I’ve also lived around Atlanta and hated most of it. If you’ve never lived in the country, you don’t know what you’re missing. If someone were to actually find my house, they would be greeted by 2 beautiful Ridgebacks, who would kindly give you a warm welcome.

You sound more rational than most bloggers. When it comes to sports, I beleive the past is the past. It’s just a series of good and bad memories for different teams in different years. I might get excited about my team’s chances, but no predictions. I’ll just cheer my best when the time comes and hope for another nice memory to celebrate for a while. And if not, kudos to the victor, and I’ll chill on the farm til next time.

But then there’s the rest of the idiots who think they’re funny by stealing your name and posting something that is utterly stupid. We’ve tried, but the AJC will do absolutely nothing about it. He is absolutely correct in infering that from present forward gt may never ever, ever, ever, watch their own team in a big game. Such is the state of decline in tech athletics. He is correct. You are not.
Boy did Zeke rattle some cages with the comment above. The truth hurts I guess, huh girls? Tech fans, listen closely: NEVER TALK ABOUT ANOTHER SCHOOL’S LACK OF CLASS. When you people denigrate UGA for our supposed “lack of class” it is quite possibly the most hypocritical statement EVER. We may have our share of obnoxious fans (name a school that doesn’t), but hands down, I have never been treated as rudely by a whole group of people as I am on my trip to the flats every other year. And it’s not even close.

To the good and decent tech folks on here, like Carolina, this is a very serious charge that could screw this kid’s life up forever. I really hope it’s not true, cause it looks like he’s got a lot of potential. He’s innocent til proven guilty, so I for one will not pass judgement. With all the stuff your program is having to go thru, you sure don’t need something like this. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before one of ours does something stupid. It’s gonna be a long summer. Good luck with your program guys.

uga_01:
Here’s a little blast from the past (2002) for you. Before you start passing judgement, maybe you should wait and see what happens huh?
The state is asking for dismissal of a $25 million lawsuit that faults the University of Georgia for an on-campus rape.
Spokesman Russ Willard said the attorney general’s office planned to file the motion to dismiss in U-S District Court on Thursday.
The lawsuit, filed by a former UGA student, claimed the university — quote “exhibited deliberate indifference” — after she claimed she was raped by student athletes in a McWhorter Hall dorm room on January 14th, 2002. The lawsuit named former basketball players Tony Cole and Steve Thomas and former football player Brandon Williams.
Williams was acquitted on charges of rape, aggravated assault with intent to rape and aggravated sexual battery in 2002. Charges against Cole and Thomas were dropped.

Dawwgy doo, I don’t dismiss your plethora of information regarding dawg info, but what’s your point. Does what you say dismiss the rape charges??? It’s sad that any human either get’s charged with this or convicted of this charge. This guy is innocent right now, and I hope for the sake of humanity he IS innocent.
We all have our knuckleheads to deal with. UGA definitely has it’s share. Like I said, I’m sorry this happened to your program at such a crucial time. I wish you guys the best.

I have always said that Georgia people are just better people than GTechers. If your boy, Tarrant, is being charged with sodomy, I got news for you, idiot, he is not GETTING OFF. If you and your brethren live in a glass house, don’t throw rocks.
I have to hand it to you Techies, when you break the law, it is not misdemeanor “open container” stuff. It is a felony of the worst sort: dealing and selling 94 lbs of pot, rape and sodomy, leaving the scene of an accident with pot possession and alcohol (compliments of little Joe), etc.
Get ready for EIGHT IN A ROW!!!!!!

If this were a UGA athlete the boards would light up with “the cops have nothing better to do than pick on our athletes” claims.
I seem to remember several of those when the former UGA basketball player stepped (or should we say staggered) out in front of a cop. It didn’t take long for the story to change on him did it?
Rape is a very serious charge and action was taken by the coach as soon as he was arrested as he should have. Tarrant is a 19 year old kid that looks to have screwed up big time. Now, all you 12 year old UGA fans posting here, learn from the mistakes that those older than you make and don’t make them yourself.

These blogs on both sides really bring out the idiots. Competition is great and we all enjoy beating each other with bragging rights, etc. (I’ve found that winning is enough without the bragging and having to listen to it when we lose brings out the hatred).
Any of you idiots who celebrate the death of a mascot, who are not totally upset and sympathetic with the tragic death of a young person, or even upset at the poor choices some of our kids make do your respective universities a grave injustice. I suspect some of the blogs are written by the opposite party just to spur outrage.
An arrest of a student at ABC does not make XYZ better; it makes us all a little worse. Some of us knew all along where we wanted to go to school. That’s not the case for most of our athletes. When they sign for one school that makes them a thug in the minds of the other?
Don’t understand why the arrest was made 2 1/2 months after the report, but hopefully after the investigation it will prove to be unwarranted. If not, he should suffer the consequences.
Both sides should make an effort to keep the “hatred” on the field and pull for all the kids to make the right choices and make us proud off the field.

GT95 let’s not get too full of ourselves to think this or any other blog will end up in either team’s locker room bill board. We really just aren’t that important. But it is highly embarrassing for those of us on this an uga’s board that do have a little bit of respect for our respective alma maters. Those types of comments on both sides only serve as bulletine board material for those of us that read these bulletine boards. Then we go into the work place and have to deal with friends and co-workers from rival schools and have to either defend or distance ourselves from idiots.
I think UGA76 does hit the nail on the head though. Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately these blogs don’t exactly draw “voices of reason.”

I see where the athletic department over at muttland hands out AUTOMATIC suspensions for certain transgressions. Novel concept huh guys? Maybe we should try that over here on North Avenue. And then there is the giving back to the community thing. The kids in Athens go to Honduras, build houses for the poor, and almost every single kid has been involved in some type of goodwill effort. We never ever hear that about our players. Instead we seem to be working overtime developing the rep as ground zero for the biggest group collectively of thugs, criminals, outlaws, and renegades in the ACC if not all of the NCAA. What’s up with that guys. And most importantly, we the fans and alumni need to quit being apologists and excuse makers for our athletes bad behavior. I never thougth I’d see the day when we at Tech might need to bring in a consultant from UGA to teach us how to get rid of our trash and dirty laundry.

Tarrant the tongue, haha, I like that. Yeah, I have to agree, the charges that ALL NCAA programs are starting to rack up is getting absurd. I mean come on guys, can’t you stop trying to be “hood” or “thug” or gangbangers, or whatever it is that you idolize, and just act normal? These kids throw away so much because they do not have the ability to ditch their thug entourages, and continually hang out with garbage. Now im not sure about “the Tongue” and whoever he hung out with, but he needs to be gone from the team if this is true (and its not looking too good for him). You know what they say, if you lay with dogs, your going to get fleas (pun intended, but its not like Tech has any room to talk, due to “the Tongue”). Either way, the NCAA needs to figure out something b/c these guys are just getting exponentially worse when they get tons of money in the NFL (do I really need to give any examples).
