Paul Johnson’s summer: setting a template
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Credibility King here …
Sat a spell this morning with Paul Johnson. Much of our discussion will run in a Q & A that should be online soon (longer version online than in tomorrow’s paper). More if it will be in a Sunday notebook.
Plenty of material about recruiting in-state that I think Tech fans will embrace.
The only player he could say who will be knocked out by injury this summer (and all season) was Tyler Evans. He suffered a shoulder/collarbone injury in the spring that has required surgery.
We talked some about walk-ons. He really wants to ramp up Tech’s walk-on program, and said walk-ons were very, very good to him at Georgia Southern.
That relates, somewhat, to the idea of redshirting. Ideally, he said, you’d get to where you could redshirt all freshmen, but then again you’re going to have some who are so talented that they have to play as true freshmen, in part because there’s a chance they’re only going to be on campus three years.
Adrian Peterson once redshirted, and Johnson said of the former GSU running back, “I guarantee you he was better as a fifth-year senior than he would have been as a freshman.”
Well, if you put it that way, I can hardly disagree.
This fall, though, not as much redshirting to happen as Johnson would one day like. Why? Simple. Numbers. He said Tech will play with 74 scholarships this fall, and 54 or 55 will be freshmen and sophomores. There’s simply a shortage of bodies in the upper classes because of attrition, injuries, transfers, [EDIT ADD HERE ON BEHALF OF QUAILDAWG], NCAA infractions, etc.
More to come on Sunday, including some detail on in-state recruiting strategies.

“74 scholarships this fall…because of attrition, injuries, trnasfers, etc.” AND NCAA RULES INFRACTION (See CHEATING) SANCTIONS!!!! Matt next time don’t dance around the “real” issue, even though I must admit I like dancing, especially in flip-flops.

Thank you Matt for sitting down with Coach Johnson. It should be interesting to see how the Jackets do this year with so much youth and a new system. I’m confident we’ll do fine. Coach Johnson is a winner!

Quaildawg,
Yeah, infractions, too. Good that you keep such close tabs on Tech.
You strike me as a closet fan, though of an odd sort.
I wonder: is the perverse satisfaction you get out of Tech issues as intense as that you get from anything else? Surely, the intensity is tough to match. Do you spend as much time delighting in positives as you do in others’ negatives?

A serious question: Why is Tech on probation?
By Hey unqualified dog

Unqualified dog you would know about cheating(see Jim Harrick/Jan Kemp). Besides we are no longer under probation so all the normal rules apply. If you call call what Tech did cheating then you truly are an idiot.

The thought of quaildawg dancing at all, flip flops or sans flip flops, is enough to make me a Jacket fan. One thing though about getting walk ons at Tech vs. Georgia Southern. It’s a little easier to get those kids into GSU than into Tech. He’ll have some, but not to the prevalence he had at Southern. He also may not need them as much in the future, with (hopefully) 85 full scholarships to go around soon as opposed to 63 (at the max) for Georgia Southern. But PJ and GSU have had huge success with walk ons. More than half of their all-Americans, and there have been a bunch, have been walk-ons.

I’ll give the puppies in Athens some props for their success but when the success leaves so will the vast majority of fence riding…fair weather…and fans who have never attended UGA(or probaly any school past 9th grade) as they will put their hats with the G on the front back in the closet and pull for another frontrunner.

Wow, if Carter Strickland had stepped up for UGA the way Matt stepped up for Tech then Carter might still be employed by UGA.
Anyway Matt, it was journalistically irresponsible to omit the sanctions Tech suffered due to playing 11 academically ineligible players for 7 years.
You should have done a better job and not jumped on the poster for calling you out on your intentional ommission.

To shanegt21: Why does it matter if a person attended a particular school or not with respect to being a fan? I’m pretty sure the current (and many past) jacket marketing efforts are not expecting to lure only trade school alums. And what about your alums/fans who had tickets and gave them up over the perceived shortcomings of Gailey and the rise in prices of such jacket-declared inferior product? Pretty fair-weathered, I’d say. Be careful how you treat those who want to pull for your team - even if they’re not alums. You may never fill the stadium, hot dogs and Cokes notwithstanding.

Matt, I would think that you would be pleased that I review all facets of sports within this geographic area. All I am expecting out of a good reporter are the facts. Nothing more and nothing less. Not so much the negativity it is the Truth. Same situation with UGA Basketball. I would expect Chip to give me the plain truth regarding what has taken place with UGA athletics. I’m not into side stepping issues to save face with whomever I am dealing with. I don’t know Paul Johnson but he appears to be the kind of man who would have respect for someone who calls a spade a spade and asks straightforward questions.

Oh Jacket fans, Hallowed be thy name. Forgive me my trespasses and point out any UNTRUTH I have spoken in my first post. For the ignorant and blind (like TDone) I mentioned, and do not make any excuses for, an example of UGA’s misdeeeds and what the program reaped (still digging out of the basketball fiasco) But then again what should I expect but views and opinions from those that wear Gold tinted glasses. Keep your heads buried in the sand about the numbers due to what I first posted. No program is immune to a drop off when numbers are reduced from the 85. Title IX has caused more angst among college FB Coaches than any other issue. With transfers, academic casulties, loss of interest (as Matt mentioned) and then throw on the NCAA’s handcuffs and your asking for some lean times. Personally I think Gailey did a pretty darn good job given the hand he was dealt by some idiots within the GT Athletics office. Doesn’t mean I like or pull for Tech (I am a Dawg fan after all) but facts are facts. Talk of thin skinned Paddy (or should I say Knute Rockne since you have such great knowledge of lockerooms) be careful before thy casteth thy stone

For the record……the 11 and 7 comment posted by “Sports Fan” is incorrect and very misleading.
Incompetent academic advisors at GT made honest mistakes during the transition between the Quarter system and the Semester system. GT coaches were completely unaware and very dissapointed when the were informed of the problem. The GT coaches and atheletic department heads determined they had a problem, self reported to the NCAA and even developed thier own penalties.
Things have been handled somewhat differently at most of the other schools which have been punished/sanctioned by the NCAA.
I am fairly sure this is the first and only time GT has ever been sanctioned or even investigated by the NCAA……..AND GT self reported the problem!!

The 11 ineligible football players were inadvertently allowed to participate, according to Tech officials, including then A.D. Dave Braine. From Sports Illustrated, November 17, 2005: “We are disappointed by the ruling of the NCAA Committee on Infractions,” said Georgia Tech athletic director Dave Braine. “Yes, mistakes were made, but they were inadvertent and confined to a small number of cases when you consider that we reviewed more than 800 transcripts.” If involuntary gaffes were made by academic counselors and/or staff in the registrar’s office then “cheating” did not occur. Rather, errors in judgment occurred. There is a profound difference between deliberate violations of rules as opposed to unintentional noncompliance. Also, please note that this was the first time — ever — that Tech has been placed on probation. That’s not too shabby for a program that goes back to the late 1800s.

Fair point, Cameron, but it’s still probation. I love Tech, but in true Tech fashion I’d rather not explain it away…looks too much like excuses. Results speak for themselves, and the only important thing is that people will watch and see that it’s a one time thing and won’t happen again.

Claa it inadvertent uninformed mistakes, clerical errors, the hand of fate, or poor calculus skills, the Nerd Herd was caught cheating for years and years. The NCAA caught you breaking the rules and you were punished. Don’t give me any of the holier than thou crap from a school that has no punishment for drug use other than a counseling session and an admonission to “don’t do that again, it’s not nice.” Other schools such as UGA, Auburn, Bama, and even Tennessee have automatic game suspensions and in house punishments but the Trade school has counseling and maybe a tea and crumpets session. I don’t remember the last time that UGA or Auburn had a drug dealer arrest but I remember more than one at Tech. Maybe the attitude on North Avenue is “all they are going to do is talk to me and tell me to straighten up or I might be subject to some kind of punishment. I might as well pick up some extra cash dealing to the dopers. After all I’m really smart and academically superior and those silly rules and laws only apply to the dummies who choose to go to inferior schools.” Your academic superiority veneer is wearing thin, or possiby you all will say that the Stanford baseball players are all majoring in pre-school marbles. Schools like Stanford, Vandy, Rice, and Duke read the eligibility rules and understood them and weren’t punished for “clerical errors by incompetent employees”. Tech has places to hide the marginal student (see Joe Hamilton’s degree)just like all the other schools. If you all are so smart why don’t you all figure out a way to compete for championships? Or, maybe there isn’t a calculus equation that lends itself to athletic superiority? Admit you cheated, admit you recruit the same dummies that everyone else does, take your medicine and quit whining like a bunch of fat babies on a humid August afternoon.

The NCAA saw right through the systematic funnelling of players into crip courses that didn’t lead to progression toward a degree. Get a grip cretin. You cheated, you got caught. At least be man enough to admit it and get on down the highway. But of course that won’t happen. You whining little girls from the trade school would much rather make lame excuses instead of fixing the problem. Stands to reason though. When the rubber meets the road, techmites always get a flat. Yes fellow UGA fans I am facing reality. It has become obvious to me from reading the posts of all the super genius, over achieving, good looking, athletically gifted, wealthy and retired at age 28 nerds that there is no hope for all of us retards who went to UGA and majored in crip classes like micro biology and genetics. I am giving up that silly masters degree that I got from Tulane (I”m sure it will be declared null and void when they realize that I got my bachelors from UGA) and moving back to Unadilla to live in a used single wide trailer that I will have to rent (at an exorbitant rent) from a highly successful Nerd Herder and then I will get a job at the local Burger-Biggie so that I can sell fries to all the other ultra rich, handsome and successful Technerds that feel sorry for me and patronize my place of employment. Please tell the 42 people that were working for me on those silly property developments that I have seen the light and I’m sorry that I led them down the primrose path when it should have been obvious that I could never amount to anything because I didn’t take calculus. Woe is me, maybe Billy Payne can give up his obviously failing enterprises and chairmanship of the Masters and come on down to middle Georgia and help me run the drive thru window on the night shift at Burger-Biggie. Maybe in my next life I can come back as a true renaissance Nerd and get the same type of degree that has led Reuben Houston to unparralleled success in his chosen field of chemical sales and distribution of some fine imported product, failing that, maybe I can emulate Joe Hamilton in auto operation and rear end renovation for other people’s cars all the while supporting my local brewery and partaking of some of Mr. Houston’s finest product. Yea, verily I have seen the light and I’m ready to face reality. Yes sir, boss nerd, would you like fries with that.

To Zeke,
Listen boy, I’m man enough. I don’t appreciate the ugly name-calling. Because of your behavior up above, I feel the need to defend myself. You are the first “person,” since I started participating on these Internet message services in 2004, to issue a personal insult against me in the form of crude, childish name-calling. I sometimes take people to task if I disagree with them (as in my remarks currently appearing after another article on this site), but I try to use reason and I’m mature enough to not resort to calling people names — unless they richly deserve it, as do you, you vile low-class punk. If you want to see an “ignorant jackazz” or someone who conducts him(?)self like an overage, hysterical “whining little girl,” look in the mirror. Should you decide to make an effort to grow up, then you can argue your points aggressively, even by saying someone else’s view is “ridiculous,” “stupid,” or “dumb,” but without resorting to 2nd-grader-on-the-playground aspersions such as calling someone infantile names (“jackazz,” “little girls”) when he does not deserve it. You see, Zeke, I didn’t say a single word against UGA (or whichever school you align yourself with) — not a solitary syllable. In fact, I never attack UGA; there’s much I like about UGA and I often pull for them (heresy?) when the Bulldogs aren’t playing Tech. I offered a defense of my folks — that’s all. Agree or disagree, but, do it as an adult.
As for Tech officials playing dumb, how do you know? You are guilty of dumbness — no surprise there — by making that assumption. You know, as in the word a-s-s-u-m-e means you make an a* of u and…you.
By the way, what is an “assembalage”? You’ve concluded that “Tech is the biggest assembalage of ignorance…” I suppose if “techmites” weren’t so ignorant, our vocabularies might contain such advanced terminology. It’s pretty damn revealing when someone accuses another person of something and inadvertently indicts himself in the same sentence in which he advances the accusation.
I don’t claim to know, in absolute terms, whether the A.D. and other Tech officials knew — and were therefore duplicitous — of the “C’s” that should have been “D’s”. That’s why I carefully worded my remarks to say that “according to Tech…” I don’t know, and neither do any of you. Yes, I’m admittedly prejudiced in favor of Tech, but that’s appropriate, just as you are biased toward your allegiances. I assure you that, if there is a certainty that my side, Tech or whoever or whatever, has knowingly done wrong — such as intentionally cheated — I will admit as much and say we were out of bounds. Otherwise, being human, if I err it will be while giving my people the benefit of the doubt.
My name is Michael Cameron of Sandy Springs/Atlanta, Georgia, and I approve this message.

techf@n you can take pride that your (I’m assuming here) alma mater and their elitist attitude fans have beaten UGA in two things. Being the first major university in the south to start a Sleeper Cell and leading the state universitiy athletic departments in gross weight and distribution of marijuana. (I’m sure both were research projects that were misinterpreted by law enforcement). There is some comfort in the share of “redneck/trailertrash” ,as you refer to them, that cheer for UGA. I don’t think Johnny Taliban will be setting up shop at UGA. In the words of Hank Jr. “ol’ boys raised on shotguns” But there is hope that if alObama is elected President Tech can claim the above were ground breaking programs and apply for federal funding to further these worthwhile projects. I can see it now…Welcome to Historic Grant Field at Bobby Dodd Stadium this year sponsored by Al Jazeer and ZigZag. PS: Be sure to put on your agenda for Friday that the Dawgs play at 2 PM so that you can wriggle in angst for the balance of the day. I am a life long GT fan and pull for them no matter who they play. At one time in my life I pulled for UGA unless they were playing GT. Now I cannot bring myself to pull for them at anytime. Not because of the team, but because of the idiotic manner in which their so called fan conduct themselves. A few years ago while having lunch at the Varsity before the GT/UGA game a fight broke out. Everyone assumed that it was Tech vs. Ga., but NO—it was two female UGA fans, so-called ladies, maybe in their 50’s. Seems that one took the others chair, and those two Southern Belles went at it. The boys in blue broke up the fight and advised both to sober up, although one did not appear to be drinking. Then I read what you so-called fans and graduates write and I understand. This was probably Quaildawg and Pitbulls mothers. Which one wants to claim the one that was drinking?

Why only look back 45 years? The following was cut and pasted directly from Wikipedia:
Georgia Tech holds 4 national titles and Georgia holds 2 national titles for a total of 6 national titles and 29 conference titles between them, making the rivalry a battle between two historically prestigious programs.
The record between the two teams is 59 Georgia wins, 38 Georgia Tech wins, and 5 ties. Georgia has currently won seven straight games and along with the 1991–1997 win streak are the longest win streaks for Georgia in the series. The longest Georgia Tech winning streak was 8 games from 1949–1956.
The first Georgia Tech football teamThe first time the two teams met on the football field was on November 4, 1893.[15][16] The then Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech’s original name) Blacksmiths led by coaches Stanley E. “Stan” Borleske and Casey C. Finnegan traveled 70 miles (110 km) by train to play the Georgia team coached by Ernest Brown in Athens at Herty Field.[17] The Blacksmiths defeated Georgia handily 28-6[18] on four scores by Leonard Wood,[1] a thirty-three year old United States Army physician and future Medal of Honor recipient.[19] During and after the game, disgruntled Georgia fans threw rocks and other debris at the Georgia Tech players and chased the victorious Blacksmiths back to their awaiting train.

sooooo…your point is that Georgia leads the all time series by 21 games? Or is it that a military ringer led the “blacksmiths” to a win in the reconstruction era? Or is it that our student body scared the crap out of your “blacksmiths” on the way back to the sh!t hole that is Atlanta? Pick the best one to suit your needs.

GT GRAD I am so glad that looking back to the leather helmet days elevates your 2008 level of self esteem. Because obviously when you look forward your outlook against UGA and the rest of the college football universe looks rather grim. Second tier heading for the basement. And really, all your looking back has done is show that UGA owns your butt. Then and now. Enjoy your future as the homecoming opponent of choice for the Dukes and Vanderbilts of the world.

Glad we’re all talking about the article here. So I’m not sure about you guys, but I think PJ is doing some good things despite his circumstances. I’ll be there for every game this year like always, but in all honesty I’m waiting for the BCS bowl team we could have when our players get a little older and have learned good execution of the system. Alright, enough about the article. Resume your infantile slap fight!

I think we have a good coach. I don’t know however how quickly Tech is going to be able to adapt to the new system.
Let just all hope this fall Barack Hussien Muslim Osama does not get elected. The anti-christ will abolish football.

You guys appear to have some serious issues with reality down south. GT has hired an absolutely great coach in PJ. And after 2-3 years, UGA will appreciate this as well - both on gameday and in recruiting.
We absolutely hated to see him leave, but knew that someone down south would bring him home.
I could care less about the GT-UGA rivalry, but UGA shouldn’t be so cocky upfront. I think you will be sweating bullets on this game a few years downstream.
PJ is one of the very best in-game coaches out there, so if you think you have a lock in the 1st half, you need to come back in from the half-time tailgate, because he will make the 2nd half a new game.
Wishing lots of luck to PJ at GT.

navyfan…..Of course you were sad to see Johnson go…..you only had 2-3 wins a year for like, 20 years until he got there. Nobody says Johnson is a bad coach….we saw him coach in Ga for years, remember? Now, I could also care less about the Army/Navy rivalry. See what I mean? What’s important to you also might not be very important in our region.
GTGrad….Why would I look at the UF/UGA record? We also still lead that one. I am more concerned about getting the series with UT and AU even. Tech fans love to drag out the UF series, but they did pretty much nothing against us until 1990. He11, even Ray Goof beat em once, back in 1989, and he was absolutely god-awful as a coach.

Goff was 46-34-1. There have been a lot who were much worse than that.
