Calvin Johnson finds way to give back
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If you knew anything about Calvin Johnson and his family, you knew he would find a way to get involved in some way with kids back home. The only question was how he would choose to do it.
I got at least part of the answer in an e-mail today announcing a free football camp for 40 Atlanta area high school receivers. The camp, for 9th- through 12th-graders, will be July 19 and led by Johnson, who played three years at Georgia Tech and was a rookie last season with the Detroit Lions.
Athletes must apply for a spot, and there’s not much time.
Students can e-mail their name and address to cjjrf@yahoo.com or mail it to P.O. Box 1015, Tyrone, Georgia, 30290. All application requests must be received by Monday.
Johnson also intends to fund an unspecified number of scholarships for receivers who did not get college scholarships.

I like CJ, him and Warrick Dunn are examples of real men that give their time and money to help others less fortunate. May God Bless.

I totally agree with Bravesfan79. Men like Calvin Johnson and Warrick Dunn are truly MEN of Character. It would be nice if this was also reported elsewhere besides this blog.

It would take ten Calvin Johnsons to undo the mess Joe Hamilton has caused to everyone. Don’t care what Johnson does, just keep Hamilton off the roads! There are innocent families out there!

GA Bulldogs, Calvin may not have done much his last year against UGA, but he is superior to any of those trash receivers over in Athens the past couple seasons. That’s pretty sad you are actually trying to bash him. He is doing something good for underprevileged kids.

I have already suggested it once……if everyone will simply ignore and then refrain from posting any responses to the ignorant and childish posts, the idiots will eventually get bored and slow down or stop with the attacking/negative posts. The ridiculous posts are usually fairly obvious from the very beginning; stop reading, go to the next post and do not respond. We will all benefit from less garbage on our GT posts. Also, have a little class and do not post stupid comments on the UGA blogs….just my opinion.
We are all proud to hear about the good deeds and positive accomplishments by Calvin Johnson. He is obviously a solid citizen and great person along with being a freak on the football field. Best of luck to CJ!!

Good for you CJ. Jacket for life and a good man to boot. I’m sure you can’t wait until you can file for free agency and play on a real NFL team thought Detroit is looking solid (on paper) this year.

Georgia Bulldogs, I conceed that you have a good football team and a good coach, it is the redneck a$$$oles that claim to be supporters,UGA Grads, etc., but the last class room they saw was the 6th grade somewhere in Clayton County.

Forgive me all tech compadre alumni, I am a Uga grad with my BS and a proud Tech grad with my MBA (notice I said “PROUD). Anyway, I know first hand what D!cks the Dawgs can be. Yes, they have had us against the wall for the past few years, but our day will come….REMAIN CALM! My challange to all my Tech Bretheren is to open up a can of CYBER WHUP A$$ on one particular Georgia Redneck
His nome de plume is, get this:
Z E D M c K L U S K E Y - he also has a companion (not sure HOW CLOSE they are) that goes by CUZ. Possibly they are cousins, but given that one of them lives around Augusta, there is no telling.
The next time you read anything on a GT blog (or anywhere else) by one of these NO TALENT Gypsie Dogs, put them in their place.
ZED loves to tell others who are obviously not dog fans to get off their blog. Moreover, he thinks he is Emily Post. He is always telling people to “mind yo’ mannahs” and “don’t chu bad mouf my dogs”.
Cuzis probably sitting in the chair beside him while he is blogging because he is always there to back up McSlutzkie.

“The Real Joe Hamilton”, should behave himself, especially since it is a rarity UGA to begin a season without having 1-2-3 guys on suspensiongm for weapons charge auto theft, drunk/disorderly, underage drinking etc.BUT the preacher/coach deals out severe 1 game suspensions for punishment. That will teach ‘em.

Thanks Calvin. It’s a shame that even when a simple article about an athlete helping others is written, there are those who turn it all into pure crap. This has nothing to do with Tech vs. UGA, or visa versa. It has to do with lack of class (and this includes the stupid tickle pile idiot). I would never take a cheap shot at the UGA folks who go down to Central America to help the needy. None of us need to get that low.

When the NCAA investigates Georgia Tech which seems to be a lot I wonder what they are looking for. Calvin Johnson is not the exception at Tech. You give up something to get an education in a Calvin Johnson world or any athlete that goes to Tech. You have to be pretty mature to appreciate what you get in return. Even with Hamilton you kind of sense a mature response in resigning to a very unfortunate incident. I don’t even think the writers of this paper get it but the parents of the student athletes are starting to say why not get an education and a separate opportunity by going to a college that doesn’t encourage short cuts and means something to the educated masses when you graduate. Football will get more like basketball where schools like Duke UNC, Davidson, Tech, Vanderbilt and Virginia are seen as opportunity not something to run from. Where a black athlete can be proud he got accepted just like a white kids trying to apply to the best academic school. It is a sign this country is getting healthy and the future is strong.

I asked Roger Goddell if I could go to Ga Military College for a year or two and get myself straightened out. The Right Rev Richt did that for me I awarded him by getting suspended for 2 years from the NFL. It’s ok Georgia fans always love me because I give them beer.

GT GRAD, CarolinaJacket — I couldn’t agree more with your posts on this particular topic.
I’m a Georgia grad and it’s still easy to say “THANK YOU” to Calvin Johnson — a true class act. Class has nothing to do with the team you support…but it will determine how you support your team

Another great idea from Bug 21. I’m sorry, Calvin, what was your response to the “Did you smoke MJ question asked by NFL GMs? Bug 21 said Yes. GT fans can add you to the list of former Teksters to be proud of! Don’t think I’d want my kid learning anything from you or that “program” over on the flats.
What’s the main course? Rollin 101? Is J Hamilton going to help out with the camp?
Don’t waste your time, Zit.

Typical UGAg fans. A nice article about a former Tech player and what happens? They idiot UGAg fans come out of the woodwork in their trailers, with their rent-to-own Dell Computers and trash a fine young man in order to puff up their already worthless lives.
Its no wonder that the rest of college sports have such a disdain for the ignorant UGAg fans around the country. Totally classless idiots.
