Tech’s Deck runs for Dog-catcher
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Freshman Deck McGuire has had one heck of an introduction to the Peach State’s biggest rivalry.
On April 9, he struck out seven and allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings to beat Georgia 9-4. Last Wednesday, he was even better, striking out nine, walking none and allowing four hits and one run in 7 innings of an 11-1 victory at Georgia.
He is the first Tech pitcher to beat Georgia twice in a season since reliever Matt Saier did it in 1995. He is the first Tech starting pitcher to beat Georgia twice in the same season since Brent Colson in 1992.
Has any Yellow Jackets pitcher beaten the Bulldogs three times in a season? When last we asked, Tech was still checking. It’s not likely. Nobody would have had an opportunity since 1971.
McGuire hasn’t just been good against Georgia. He has been good against everybody. He’s 8-0. If he looks good again against Georgia, the SEC champion, don’t be surprised if Danny Hall moves him to one of the top spots in the rotation for the postseason. If I were Hall, I’d consider pitching him in one of the first two games of the ACC tournament.
When I asked Hall about shaking up the rotation, he said only, “He’s going to have to pitch a game in the ACC tournament if we’re going to win it.” That, of course, would be true wherever McGuire fit into the top four spots. The way the ACC tournament works, there are two, three-game round-robin brackets with the winners of each bracket playing for the championship. That’s four games for the two bracket winners.
If you save McGuire for the fourth game, and he doesn’t get to pitch, have you wasted one of your top pitchers? OTOH, if you save him for the fourth game and he does get to pitch, does the advantage that might give you in the championship game outweigh the risk of waiting?
Here’s one reason to move him into the round-robin portion of the tournament: If you don’t get him a start, he will sit more than two weeks between Tuesday night’s start and the NCAA regionals. You have to give him a turn to avoid that long layoff.

I have supported GT since I was a child. I attended GT, as did my brother-in-law, my brother, my daughter, and two nephews. I have contributed to the AT and GT funds and bought 4 season tickets regularly for over 20 years. The GTAA advertises sideline seats without a donation. This year the GTAA already has my “contribution” of $600 for 2 season tickets which should put us—at least—between the 30 yard lines. In the past I have made “contributed” this same amount for 4 tickets on the goal line. BUT, as per Scott McClaren—personally—the GTAA refuses to acknowledge my request for a seat improvement for 2 seats and will only give me a choice of 2 of the 4 tickets near the goal line I have had for years. I refuse to accept less than I have paid for! What is going on at the GTAA?

Michael, as a dawg fan, I have a lot of friends that are season ticket holders and have to normally donate about $2000 to have half way decent seats. I have sat on the 50 yard line before with borrowed tickets, and I can tell you, the alums in those sections absolutely SUCK!! If I had 10 grand to donate for really good seats, I wouldn’t do it. That bunch of old farts couldn’t fire up a joint with a blow torch. I was really disappointed. My buddy and me were asked to actually “SIT DOWN” by Ga fans. We just pretty much said fvck you and get over it. I think that’s why a lot of teams don’t fear our stadium……Old farts. You won’t find that happening at LSU, Tenn, or dam South Carolina for that matter. We don’t sell enough tickets to the students, and that’s what makes the stadium rock the hell out in their house. I’m forty freakin three and lose my voice at games. The old farts I’m talkin about are the one’s that just want to give a lot of money, get the great seats, and do nothing but sit on their azz and enjoy their social time in Athens. Can’t stand it. I’ll always be a dawg, but until Sanford starts changing the allotment on student tickets, that stadium will never be as loud our rivals.

Don’t know about getting tickets on the 50, or even the 30 (I had to give up my season tickets some years ago), but I do think it will be hard for a Tech pitcher to win three in a row from the DAWGS. That’s asking for a lot. But we will be pulling for him. Do your best young man.

Zeb, I’m right with you. I believe in making noise at Tech games, but a lot of the time I get those same looks from Ma and Pa Kettle sitting on their hands with a scour on their face. Usually they are gone by the end of the third quarter, too. I realize the program needs their money as well as mine, but I would love to see more spirit, and less of a luke warm body to fill the seat! But, I wouldn’t complain about the noise in Athens. Ya’ll do alright. As for Tech, growing old doesn’t mean you have to grow up-at least on the weekends! Go CPJ and Go Jackets
