Plenty happening on The Flats

Campus may be nearly dead, as school’s out at Tech, but it’ll be busy this weekend. If you’re looking for a pleasant, low-stress way to spend time, there’s tennis and baseball aplenty.

The defending national champion womens tennis team (19-5) begins defense of its title with a noon match Friday against Alcorn State (13-12). Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and children. Tech is seeded No. 3 nationally, behind Northwestern and Georgia. A win there matches the Yellow Jackets Saturday at 1 against the winner of Friday’s 3 p.m. match between Illinois and Tennessee.

Great atmosphere if you’ve never been, particularly if the weather is nice. Parking will be far more plentiful than it was for the spring football game. Seriously.

The netters, led by All-Americans Kristi Miller (who graduated last Saturday with a 4.0 GPA and a 32-9 singles mark this season) and Amanda McDowell (36-8) will later send a Tech-record five players to the NCAA singles tournament (Miller, McDowell, Whitney McCray, Kirsten Flower and Maya Johansson).

The baseball team has kind of been treading water in the ACC (12-12), but the Jackets have a huge series at home against Clemson, which is way down from most years (looking at first sub-.500 ACC record since 1972). Tickets are $5 for adults, and $3 for seniors and children. They play at 7 on Friday and Saturday, and 1 on Sunday.

Tech is trying to win the right to host a regional, maybe even a super regional, and needs to perform well over the final seven games.

Check out freshman SS Derek Dietrich, and converted pitcher Charlie Blackmon, now a hot-hitting OF. And 3B Brad Feltes is a great example of player development, a senior who has ramped up his production dramatically in his final season.

Have fun.

It is just such a relief that Joe Hamilton resigned instead of having to be forced out. He is the biggest embarrassement for the institution in our history! He has denied, denied, denied, since his arrest. Take some personal responsibility, you jerk! So drunk that a lady has to follow you down I-75 to try and get your license number in hopes that you don’t rear-end and kill an innocent family, smoking an illegal drug while you’re driving drunk, and then HIT AND RUN! Hope you stay in jail till I can get my car off the road.

Sorry to see a post like the one from Terry. Does Terry think Joe’s actions, while inexcusable, are more embarrassing than a student linked to terror? Get a life. Joe did many great things for the Jackets and lets hope he gets the assistance he needs to get his life back in order. Go Jackets.

Saturday plans: 1:00 - Watch a bunch of beautiful GT ladies win the womens tennis regional. 4:00 - Commence tailgating. 7:00 - Watch GT lock up the series vs CU and harass one self-absorbed and outwardly gay Jack Legget. Make fun of any visiting UGA fans for showing up to root against GT instead of following their own team on the road (loser mentality). 10:00- Ride back to my house in Sugarloaf Plantations and revel in the fact that life is good for this GT fan.

GTZ: Don’t you mean drive your Saturn back to your efficiency apartment on Buford HWY and snuggle up with your 3 cats? That’s probably a more realistic scenario.

And before you say “that’s probably your life,” let me say that no, it is not. It is simply the life of the majority of tech grads I have known.

Oh, almost forgot to congratulate you on the big win last night. Glad you nerds can be competitive in SOMETHING.

Blaster,

You would care about baseball if you had won the game. You UGA fans are famous for band wagon jumping. You only care about sports other than football when you win. You should be ashamed. You have a school of 35,000 students and you only support one team. How very sad for your student athletes. Oh yeah….you don’t have student athletes. I meant your athletes.

Baseball teams ranked #8 in the nation don’t lose games at home 11-1. I knew for weeks UGA’s baseball team was overrated. Just like the football team. Both are going to fall hard!

Meanwhile Tech has teams that are ticking up the ladder, not down. You can feel the tide is slowly changing!

Dawgy, Is that all you have to do is surf Tech blogs and write the same thing, over and over? Talk about a life. At least come up with something original. Oh, that’s right-you don’t have anything else to talk about other than football, because your baseball team just got WHOOPED, again!

gt45: I just call it like I see it. If the truth hurts, I suggest acquiring thicker skin. And congrats to the Tech baseball team. They seem to have our number this year. I look forward to the Turner Field game, as well as meeting the nerds again in the Regionals. Oh yeah, one last thing. Tech lies and cheats, among other extracurricular activities that have recently come to light.

WHO THE F**K CARES?????? You geeks are really searching hard for a nail to hang your hat on!! I guess in the case of the nerd herd it is necessary. PLEASE…..women’s tennis??? Think carefully…do you REALLY want to compare your women’s tennis program to the DAWGS???? Did not think so!!!! Is it a bummer to lose 2 baseball games in a row to you guys? Sure it is!!!! BTW since the ONLY thing good you can say about your pitiful excuse of a football program is a shared 1990 championship, maybe it is a good time to ask when you last if ever won the NCAA baseball championship??? Anxiously awaiting your reply……….do not want to go there either huh? NOW…TO A MATTER OF IMPORTANCE TO US ALL. FOOTBALL….7 IN A ROW AND COUNTING!!!!!! 13 OUT OF LAST 16…AND COUNTING!!! $150.00 SEASON TICKETS WITH NO CONTRUBUTION REQUIRED AND STILL CANT SELL OUT YOUR POOR EXCUSE OF A COLLEGE FOOTBALL STADIUM…EXCEPT OF COURSE WHEN YOU PLAY A GOOD TEAM WITH ENOUGH FANS TO BUY YOUR LEFT OVER TICKETS!!!! PLAYED AT DUKE RECENTLY WITH A PAID ATTENDANCE OF LESS THAT 12,000(PER AJC). PLAYED IN acc JOKE OF A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AGAINST WEAK FOREST AND THE STADUIM WAS LESS THAN 1/3 FULL!!!!!!! Do you realize that the almight Georgia Diamond Dawgs lost 11-1 to a Tech team that had 6 freshmen in the lineup!!! I’m sorry but the #8 team in the nation doesn’t lose to a bunch of FRESHMEN!!!! Ga Tech has outscored you 20-5 in the two games played so far. The SEC is truly weak.

Lisa, hope you are not one of those big fat girls with thick glasses you usually see in the GT student section. If you are gonna come to a sports blog…at least know what you are talking about!!!!!Chect the final four appearances of the nerd herd and the DAWGS….please. then come back!! Dawgs suck….PLEASE check and see who has the most national championships in baseball…..SEC or ACC?????????? In the meantime….F**K GT!!!!!!!!

By Dawgs Suck

BADDAWG…

I chect, or is that please CHECK the final four appearances for the mutts and yellow jackets…yeah 1983, 25 freakin years ago!!! Tech went to the Final Four in 1990 lost to eventual champion UNLV, and we just played for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in 2004. My favorite baseball team, which happens to be Tech may not have a National Championship, but they have been one of the most consistant baseball programs in the country averaging atleast 40 wins a year for the past 25 years, and that is a FACT go look it up. Georgia Tech Baseball has not had a loosing, overall record, season since 1981. That is a FACT go look that one up smart guy. Can your sorry excuse for a baseball team say that? So what if you won the 1990 National Championship. Atleast my team is consistant.

By BADDDAWG

May 10, 2008 3:09 PM | Link to this

BADDDAWG…

Here is another FACT for you: UGA Baseball 4- SEC Baseball Championships 0- SEC Baseball Tournament Championships, Ga Tech Baseball- 1- SEC Baseball championship in 1957, 9- ACC Baseball Championships 5- ACC Tournament Championships.

I guess now your going to say well our football team is better. Which it is, but I have a feeling Tech might win a couple in the next few years. My guess is that BADDAWG is some lonely teenager who thinks they know it all, but sadly he doesn’t. If your baseball team had beaten Tech twice this year we’d never hear the end of it, and the UGAers of the world would let all Tech fans know that the almight UGA Dawgs beat the lonely nerds at a sport yet again.

F*&K Off BADDAWG.

Bug Blaster, here we go again. Eight in a row ties the record. Nine in a row makes a new record. You guys still have to win two more games to have a new record. Oh, I forgot, this may be too much math for you.

By BADDAWG

May 11, 2008 8:17 AM | Link to this

Dawgs suck….IYou pointed out that UGA baseball needed to go back to the “weak” SEC….I assumed you meant that the ACC was a stronger conference in baseball….I said check the records to see which conference has the most national championships in baseball. PLEASE check on it!!!! Are we a powerhouse in baseball??? NO!! And neither are you!!!! Every football blog or vent you go to the nerd herd ALWAYS refer to your shared national championship in 1990 in football inferring that the NERDS are better than UGA!!! I simply did the same!!
FACT: NCAA baseball-UGA 1 national championship!!! NERDS-0!!!!!

Oh by the way dawgs suck, I apologize for the spelling error. You may or may not be glad to know I am working on that. I agreed to help Reggie Ball with his counting if he would help me with my spelling. I am sure you will be glad to know that he can count to four EVERY single time….somtimes he gets all the way to 10 without f**king up!!!!!!!!!!!!!
