Sorting through football matters

Scattershooting …

Interesting tidbits on the first football depth chart under coach Paul Johnson.

Surprised to hear of developments with Joe Hamilton.

First, on the depth chart …

Bryce Dykes, former walk-on, is No. 2 at QB behind Josh Nesbitt. Calvin Booker is No. 3. Not a shock, based on Dykes’ performances in spring, and all the evidence you need to say Paul Johnson is starting with a clean slate, and going from the ground up.

But there’s more evidence. Three players who started all or parts of last year who were injured this spring are not listed as starters, but potential starters. At strongside linebacker, the starter is listed as redshirt freshman Kyle Jackson OR returning starter Shane Bowen — who missed all spring after shoulder surgery. Anthony Barnes is moving from strongside to weakside, where he’s listed as starter. Brad Jefferson is No. 1 at MLB. At LG, it is Jason Hill OR A.J. Smith, who started some at RT last season. At RG, it is redshirt freshman Joseph Gilbert OR Cord Howard, who started some at RT last season. Howard missed all spring after leg surgery, and Smith was very limited by his troublesome elbow.

Other interesting developments: The experiment moving WR Greg Smith to B-back is not over. Roddy Jones is listed as one starter. At the other spot: Jamaal Evans OR Greg Smith. The starting WRs are Demaryius Thomas and Correy Earls. Backups are freshman Tyler Melton (the only freshman on the depth chart, as he participated in the spring) and Zach Fisher.

Punter and kicker spots remain up for competition.

Jerrard Tarrant, a redshirt freshman from Carrollton, has beaten out Mario Butler for a starting CB spot, at least for now.

Dominique Reese is listed as the No. 1 free safety, with Jake Blackwood behind him and redshirt freshman Willie White No. 3.

David Brown, the much-traveled David Brown, remains No. 1 at RT, ahead of redshirt freshman Clyde Yandell. Paul Johnson told me last month he really likes Brown, and that Yandell has considerable work to do. He played defense only until his senior year in high school, when he moved to offense. I think that guys going to be very good when he figures out what’s being asked of him.

The O-line does not appear remotely deep, particularly with the transfer of Trey Dunmon and the “retirement” of Jacob Lonowski (recurring shoulder problems). If A.J. and Cord are slow to bounce back from their injuries, depth becomes more of an issue even before a game is played.

On Hamilton, who was arrested Monday night near campus for some sort of a situation that the police report suggests may have involved alcohol, marijuana and a possible hit & run … I’m almost speechless. Don’t know what to say. Tech just hired him (despite rumors out there for weeks and weeks) nine or 10 days ago.

Tech needs to maintain as much credibility as possible in this situation and dismiss him from the staff. As an alumni I feel that there is no room at Georgia Tech for such behavior. I think CPJ will do the right thing, but I would be very disappointed if he stays. The coaching staff are supposed to be upstanding examples of what good people are supposed to be like.

At what point does a past student of a school stop being referred to as “that school’s person?”

How old does Joe H. have to be to stop being Tech’s Joe? GA Tech has no control or influence what this grown man does in his adult life. Why is this even a sports topic for Tech? Will Joe H. be 70 years old and run over a cat and the ajc splash an article that says “Tech’s Joe from decades ago kills cat?”

Another example of the ajc trying its best to find something negative about Tech to “balance out” all of the negative behaviors from the ugay population.

Hey “HaHa”, you need to STFU dude. That’s about as crass a comment as I’ve heard. Please tell me you’re not a dawg fan, cause if you are, we don’t want you.

For you Tech folks, this was a very unfortunate incident and could’ve happened at any school. But you gotta admit, the timing really sux. I really enjoyed watching Joe play for you guys. Heckofa athlete. I’m sure CPJ is just saying…WTF??

JustMe: Um, what recent “negative behaviors” are you referring to? Recently, tech has lost a baseball player’s life to heroin, had a signee arrested for DUI, and now a coach arrested for alcohol, drugs, and major traffic violations. Where’s all this negative news you speak of out of Athens? Sounds like Tech is the school with players and coaches that can’t keep their noses’ clean.

Soak it in Ha Ha. The lights of the big city can be blinding and in Ha Ha’s case entertaining. In a wider universe where adults live the baseball player’s family lives with this forever and Hamilton, better than most, will overcome this patch of ice in the road with the grace people like Ha Ha fail to measure up to. Like Sir Winston said,”I might be drunk but tomorrow I will wake up sober and tomorrow Ha Ha still wakes up an idiot.”

Nice Degree check out the high road most athletes are taking after their degrees and before. Most dodge anything that looks like a real education like it is a virus. The sad thing about this blog is that a young Ga athlete is dead and all the so-called fans can do is bash each other. The question should be,how can We prevent other tragic deaths at GT or UGA? Yes, that’s right dawg fans, UGA, or don’t You believe college kids can buy H in Athens? If Tech handles this in the usual way universities handle such things it will be swept under the rug, the PR department will go into damage control mode, and it will be “business as usual” in no time. UGA will take the “high road” and not mention it. No sense in worrying the parents of any of Their students, after all, it’s Tech’s problem. This is unacceptable! I think several steps should be taken, beginning with increased testing for all athletes in state supported schools, this shouldn’t be left to the NCAA, but should be done by Our State Legislature. After all, We taxpayers pay the bills for those schools. Next, people should be held accountable, beginning with the young Man’s roomate. Heroin use is a felony, witnessing a felony and not reporting it is a felony. If He saw Heroin being used and did not report it he should be charged. If He is a student at GT and is charged He should be expelled. Next, the coach should be called on the carpet. This Kid’s roomate said He was using, His Dad said He had a problem in the past, and the coach had no idea? Well D-rad needs to find out why in the hell He didn’t know! As for UGA, increase drug testing now, and let every student know that They are subject to being kicked out of school if They see any felony drug use and don’t report it.

That BOY sure could play. He couldn’t elocute for sh!t, but that didn’t matter. We knew he wasn’t gonna be no engineer when we recruited him out of Gullah country South Carolina, but we told him he was gonna be one if he came to tech. Can’t believe that idiot believed us!! Now look at him!! Maybe I should give him a call to come work for me at UCF. On second thought, he’s too much of an embarrassment to even work here.

I guess we know where the term “Smokin” Joe Hamilton came from now, don’t we? Or, can we say “Hamilton’s fledgling coaching career may be up in smoke”??? HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! “I’m innacent, ya hona….it’s a conspacy….c-o-n spiracy”!!! When you live in glass houses, Tech fans, you shouldn’t throw stones.

I’m a huge Joe Hamilton fan, but if the allegations turn out to be true and if I was Paul Johnson I would have to let Joe go. I just hope it’s not indicative of a more serious problem Joe has. Good luck Joe!

I am looking for some heroin and a bag of grass. Can I find them on the Tech campus?

Can I find attractive girls on the Tech campus as well? There were none when I was taking classes at the Institute.

Long time GT fan (1960) and high school coach (Pebblebrook, St. Pius, Frederica, Crestwood, Chattahoochee) here. Most of you guys miss the point. I’m saddened by the Hamilton situation but not that surprised.

Football players get their a*******es kissed by assorted “jock sniffers” (like a lot of bloggers here)) from about the time they are ten years old. They come to believe that they can get away with anything. Somebody will fix it. True at GT, UGA or anywhere else.

What’s up with this forum???? 95% of the article was about FOOTBALL, and only 5% about an unfortunate off-the-field incident about a recently hired administrator in the athletic dept. Yet, 95% of the posts are classless comments with rude insults. As a USNA grad/fan, I feel sorry for Coach Johnson…he may have found himself in a more competitive school/conference, but its fan base (and that of its rival, UGA—unlike Navy’ West Point rivals) frequently demonstrate poor character. LET’S TALK FOOTBALL! NOT 8th Grade INSULTS! Thanx.
