What Dunmon’s departure means

Colin Peek, D.J. Donley, Taylor Bennett and now Trey Dunmon. Those are the players who have transferred or are transferring from Georgia Tech’s football team since Paul Johnson and his staff took over.

It’s not the end of the world. You will find no implication here that either the players or the coaches are to blame, or disloyal, or in any way wrong.

Think about it this way: You have a job, and a new boss comes in and changes things, and you decide it’s not the job you signed up to do. That doesn’t make the new boss wrong for making changes, and it doesn’t make you disloyal or wrong if you decide the job is no longer right for you.

(Yes, I’ve been told that Donley’s departure wasn’t about the changes in the staff. But there’s still this quote from his high school coach: “He had a really good freshman year, and he has a lot of confidence that he can play the wide receiver position, and the comment he made was he really wanted to see how good he can get.”)

Dunmon did tell me he had some issues with the new staff, but he characterized them as minor and mentioned them late in our conversation. The first thing he said when I asked him why he was transferring was: “Just style. It’s not my favorite offense. This is a big difference [from what Tech was doing on the offensive line].”

Dunmon, unlike the others, went through spring practice. He told me he didn’t think the new offense was for him but he wanted to see for himself. He said he’ll probably wind up at Georgia Southern, where he knows the coaches. Georgia Southern has something else going for it, too; because it’s Division I-AA, Dunmon could play there this fall. He probably couldn’t do that in Division I-A, and he already has used his redshirt year. (As far as I know, the NCAA hasn’t ruled on Peek’s waiver request. He’s got an argument: He’s a tight end, and Johnson doesn’t use tight ends.)

Is Dunmon’s move about playing time? He might have started at center, though from practices and conversations I had it seemed the coaches liked Dan Voss there. He said the coaches told him he would play at Tech, and I think he might have had even more playing time than he had last fall, which was considerable for a non-starter. Dunmon’s departure leaves Tech very thin at center, but that doesn’t mean he owed it to anyone to stay.

When we talked Tuesday evening, he had finished his two finals and had two term papers left to hand in. He’ll probably go from being a science, technology and culture major at Tech to some kind of advertising-oriented major at Georgia Southern.

“I am going to miss my teammates,” he said.

When I spoke at the Lunch Bunch a week ago, I was asked if there’d be any more defections, and I said I didn’t think so, that I didn’t see why anybody would go through a full spring of practice and only then, after all that work, decide it wasn’t for him. Guess I was wrong.

But I don’t see these transfers as any sort of blotch on Tech or the staff or the players who leave. I just see this as the normal fallout from a big-time change in philosophies. And everybody — those who stay as well as those who leave — usually is better off when people who aren’t sold on the new way find a better fit.

HELP! Does anyone know how to get on scott’s gtsportsblog? I can no longer find it on the web and it is my favorite source to ga tech sports. Concerning Dunmon, I wish him all the luck. If it isn’t the system he wishes to play in then let him go be successful and happy. I think he is a high character guy and gt will miss that. Can’t blame him one bit, it is his life and his decisions. Good luck as southern Trey! Upset UGA the first game of the season!

I’m very confused. Trey Dunmon doesn’t like Tech’s style? Doesn’t Georgia Southern run the triple option attack as well? I am wondering about the Georgia Tech Sports Blog as well. What happened?

This is more the reason why players should pick the school and not the system on the football school. Pollack and Green at Ga. are through in the NFL, short careers. The chances of going pro and having a long career there are slim. We had 28 leave during Lewis era if not mistaken due to several things academics and injuries being one. We ran a pass happy offense one year and were heading for a 1-10 season. Tech’s passing offense last year was pretty ineffective and the guess here is it will get more effective this year and the years ahead because of the option. All one has to do is pull out some old Shawn Jones, Dewberry and Hamilton highlight reels. If there is a surprise it’s the thought the previous staff had recruited athletes who wanted to be at Tech nomatter really who the coach was. It will be interesting to watch how the NCAA rules in some of these instances. But as far as Tech goes once the product gets on the field this fall many who don’t understand it or have gotten misinformation will see what it really is and how it’s utilized. That will help more than anything.

Yes, “hold on a sec”, you are confused. Georgia Southern no longer runs the triple option based offense. Not for lack of production though. It was scrapped, much to the chagrin of the GSU support base, when VanGoober was hired to replace Coach Sewak. Now GSU runs a wide open, pass happy offense under Coach Hatcher.

Despite all these players leaving, attendance at Tickle Piles has been on the upswing. I think we can thank Paul Johnson because he has embraced Tech traditions with great enthusiasm. I just hope he can end one Tech tradition and start beating those redneck butt sniffers from Athens. Oh how I hate those hillbillys. We are so much smarter than they are. THWG!!!

What exactly was Dunmon’s “style?”

Vicious chop-blocks occuring well after the play was over?

Getting constantly pushed back by and DT in front of him.

The kid clearly has some personal issues and GT is probably better off without him.

From news reports, Johnsons OL will only block straight ahead…no pulls, no traps, and no pass blocking. This simplistic blocking, if it is fact, will not entice good OL to attend Tech…recruiting of OL could be a problem.

Trey Dunmon was the dirtiest player I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying a lot, because Tech has had some real cheap-shot artists. What he pulled in the Georgia game last year (and his sleaze-bag Dad endorsed it!!), should have warranted a life-time suspension from all collegiate athletics. What a low life. Tech sure will miss him.

Yet another example of irony involving the Tech and GSU programs. Having someone transfer to Southern to escape the spread option is topsy-turvy to us old-time Eagles. Son_sir is right about the chagrin of many in the Eagle Nation who hated to see our signature offense go away. I’m OK with what Hatcher is doing, since the milk is alreadt spilled. This fits nicely with the irony of Tech using coaches and a system greatly influenced by Erk Russell. I don’t suppose they’ll use GATA, however.

Stupe joe & dawgy, you two are the low life. Trey always hustled to continue his blocks down field. That was instilled in his High School Coaches as well. I only hate he did not kick your sorry butts while he was at Tech. Oh well. I will say that I know his Dad and he is no sleaze bag. We would be gald to meet you to discuss this issue further, then kick your sorry butts. Tech will miss Big Trey. We hate to see him go, but we wish nothing but the best for him. For those of you who haven’t picked up on it yet, I am a UGA fan. I didn’t go to UGA (not that it isn’t a dream of mine). I have my GED and deliver mattresses for a large chain. A college education just wasn’t in the cards for me. I have a massive inferiority complex when it comes to educated people. I like that I can come on here and make a post where I act like I am a Tech student/graduate.

My hope and goal in life is that one or two people won’t see through my little game on here and actually think I am a Tech person. This is all I have going for me.

“continuing blocks downfield” doesn’t really describe what “Big Trey” did. What that p.o.s. did was dive into Rod Battle’s legs from behind when the play was 20 yards in front of them. And then his Sleazy dad bragged about it on a message board, even going so far as to insinuate he was sorry Trey didn’t seriously hurt Battle. Yeah, you stay classy georgia tech. And I loved how you “called me out” from behind a keyboard. Real manly, because there is no doubt that if I saw you in real life you would run like the little girl you probably are.

Unless she is incredibly ugly, she will run to me, otherwise I will run from her then kick your sorry butt.

Good riddance is what I say. Guys like that are THE reason GT football has not passed that elite threshold. Weak character, always run when the going gets tough. Instead of proving your worth and ability to adapt, they quit and find an easier way. The only person who has a valid reason to transfer was Colin Peek, because his position doesn’t exist here at GT. I give him a pass. But even Bennett could have stayed. He isn’t going to play football in the NFL, so why transfer now? I can see if he had 2-3 years of eligibility and just wanted to play, but he has one year and no future in football. Why bail on your friends and teammates? Weak character. Donley had a lot of eligibility left, but he could have still been a good WR at GT. But his leaving is about $$$. He thinks if he doesn’t catch 80-100 balls a year he won’t be a top $ receiver in the NFL. But what he doesn’t realize is that if you have talent and can play, the NFL scouts will find you and if you compete and work hard he would have still made it as a receiver in the NFL. Hines Ward comes to mind. Ward was never a full time receiver in college. But he worked hard and got drafted on ability and turned into a pro-bowl WR and super bowl MVP. What if he had gotten sullen and transferred from UGA because he wasn’t getting to play the traditional position he wanted to play? Guys who hit the reset button on the video game because they don’t like how the game is going are not the types we need at GT. Good riddance!!!

Oh and in your analogy, Knobler, of if a new boss comes in at a person’s work, if the new boss asks you to be the janitor after having been an engineer, I can see leaving for a different job. But if that new boss asks you to learn something new and work harder than before, that’s not okay to leave and call it “the job isn’t what I signed on for”, it’s called being a lazy wuss.

CPJ didn’t ask Trey Dunmon, DJ Donley, or Taylor Bennett to be janitors, he asked them to be football players, which is what they were before under Chan Gailey.

What OL prospect wouldn’t relish the opportunity to line up in this offense, fire off the ball and hit someone? I mean, that would seem to me to be the fun of playing that position.

Unless I missed something, Trey wasn’t on anyone’s list as an NFL prospect, so it’s not like he can say playing in an option offense hurts his pro potential.

This all just goes to show that today’s college football player has no desire to go to school for an education. It’s all about a ticket to the pros, that’s all. The NCAA is nothing but an NFL farm system. I’m sorry, Techies, but GT is just another “football factory,” albeit an unsuccessful one.

UGA owns us now so stop bickering with the fatherless. Always remember the lonliest day at UGA athlectics is Father’s Day.

Trey was dirty… period. He and Ben Anderson were pulled apart several times fighting at practice for dirty crap by Trey.

When he played straight up he was decent and would have seen a lot of playing time this season.

I agree he should have rode this thing out. We will survive without him.

It’s all part of the coach change. Just think if it was the other way, if PJohnson was leaving for a contemporary office minded coach, the whole office team would leave. None of the triple option guys would fit into the offenses that 99.99% of the college football run. I’m glad we have a coach who’s style is so archaic that nobody else uses it. Just think Tech will be able to recruit all the the triple option players coming out of high school.

Navigator: I hope you’re being a little facetious with your analysis. I don’t want to have to go through whole turnover thing in 5 years.

Dropping like flies. I think it will be funny when you guys end up with a season like ND had last year. After all that bickering about Chan. It’s ironic.

Athens is 5 sq miles surrounded by reality. Tech’s 1990 nat champ was earned simply because it was the only undefeated team. Since Colorado lost one and was given the 5th down against Mizzou its clear that they backed in to their “half”. Its too bad that Pres Adams knew he would lose his job had he not protested the BCS vote. This is hilarous since UGA was one of the key proponents of the orginal BCS which was designed at that time to exclude “minor” schools.
Hey BAD-DAWG. Its a new game. You have to win on the field and on the blogs.
