Don’t give up; it’s only spring

Let me begin on a personal note by thanking the Lunch Bunch crowd at Frankie’s for the warm reception today. It was great to meet so many fine folks.

As I said in that talk, it would be a mistake to draw too many negative conclusions from Saturday’s spring game. Some reasons:

1) It’s just a spring game. 2) Cord Howard and A.J. Smith, who might end up starting on the offensive line, weren’t playing. 3) Georgia Tech’s offense has looked better than that in practice. 4) Other defenses won’t have practiced against Tech’s offense nearly as many times as Tech’s defense has. Part of the success of the system will be opponents’ lack of familiarity with it. 5) Josh Nesbitt was coming off an injury. 6) It was only the 15th practice of an entirely new offense. 7) Your defensive front four might be pretty darned tough for anyone to block. 8) Jonathan Dwyer will hold onto the ball eventually. He has the talent and the want-to and just needs more practice. 9) It’s just a spring game. 10) It’s just a spring game.

I posted on the Hive….what I saw was at best 5-7 next year and at best 6-6 and kiss the bowl sequence good bye.

I’ll park my season tickets for two years and listen to the radio and wait for 2011.

Sorry but I’m depressed!!

Negative conclusions after a few practices. Ridiculous. We have a fine new coach. We have a fine new offense. The only problem we have is the Chan Gailey syndrome. We were stuck with the worst coach in the history of the NCAA for the last 6 years…and make no mistake about it…these last 6 years were wasted. Calvin Johnson was wasted…etc, etc. It will take a little time to get the players completely out of the Gailey malaise…but it will happen. In the mean time, just enjoy the fact that the worst coach in the history of the NCAA is gone…FOREVER!! HALLEEEEEEEEDAMLOOOOYAH!!!!

m is without a doubt one of the dumbest middle schoolers to ever post on a sports blog. Chan Gailey wasn’t a Vince Lombardi but he sure wasn’t the worst coach Tech has had since Dodd. Do the names Bill Fulcher, Pepper Rodgers, or Bill Lewis ring any bells. None of them were good enough coaches to carry Gailey’s clipboard. m is the dumbest poster in blog history….forever. We’ll all shout halleeeeeeeeedamloooooyah when m reaches puberty and finds something to do other than blog about Chan Gailey.

Let’s wait and see just what coach PB&J can do in a couple of years. If he wins big on North Avenue he will be a miracle worker and also be gone to a much better and more high profile job at a school that can be a consistent power. Even a miracle worker won’t be able to make a year in year out power out of the Jackits. The limited curriculum limits the number of athletes who will be interested in Tech. Not the academics mind you, just the limited curriculum. Most of the football players aren’t engineering majors. They are management, business, etc. with lots of tutors and no more rigorous classes than any othe big school.

I would take any of the 3 Tech coaches you mentioned over Chan Gailey. Chan Gailey could suck a football through a garden hose. He ran our program into the ground. Thank God and Greyhound he is gone FOREVER. Those who forget history are bound to repeat it. We need to never forget how much damage Chan did to our program and vow to never let it happen again. He is the KC Chiefs problem now. He will never be our problem again…at least after we get the Gailey attitude purged from this team.

Good post Knobler. Its just spring. Those who think otherwise don’t really know football. PERIOD.

San Diego St Jacket- why must you get depressed? I wondered how you’ve survived this long under the last regime. CPJ will have this team rolling in time. But we have to give him time. He is CPJ, not Jesus.

I highly doubt CPJ will jump ship after a couple of good years at Tech. He had offers to go to other schools where academics were not much of an issue and the curriculum was huge. He is in for the long haul and I think he has finally found his home to where he can have academics and winning at the highest level. Also, we have a management major and a rising MBA program. Tech has a lot to offer besides engineering.

What I saw Saturday was a team struggling with a brand new system. CPJ will put the Jackets back on top, but he does not possess a magic wand.
The key to this is countless reps, timing, and a QB you can trust to make the proper reads. These guys just had a remedial course and you expected them to look like a well polished unit ?
Obviously, not many of you have actually played the game. Also, GT has one hell of a DL, which makes it all the more difficult for an offense still in it’s infancy. If these kids maintain a good attitude and put forth the effort, the execution will come. You GT fans who insist on negativity are one reason this program is usually middle of the pack.
F#@k your excuses about academics and the institution’s limitations. Grow a pair and it will rub off on the program !

Eventhough it’s understandable I’m going to have to defend Pepper Rodgers and Bill Fulcher to some degree, who was there only two years and if not mistaken had recruited Jimmy Robinson and Steve Raible as wr’s (it’s so long ago) and think Eddie Mac. was QB. As for Pepper he if not mistaken coached Kansas (not totally sure about this) when it had a running back named Gayle (ai) Sayers and won there and then moved to UCLA and won there. It was a huge hire for Tech. The problem became apparent as his tenure wore on..no conference membership but he helped get us in the ACC before he left Tech, then the facilities were the worst in the Nation and thanks to Curry, Pres. and later Homer Rice they greatly improved. In 1979 he had a phenom coaching staff that including a young QB coach name Steve Spurrier who only had one year or so work with Mike Kelly a top recruit out of Ga. The problem was the fan support was kind of split pro and con like a few coaches since then. The wishbone also did’nt really have a passing component that was great. Also Pepper had a tough schedule we played Notre Dame when they were top 10 material, We played several top schools like Ptt with Tony Dorsett. Now this new scheme I think can adjust to pass pretty quick and with Johnsons background along with Peterson’s at Hawaii that should be interesting to watch develop.

Just wait and see Dude47, if coach PB&J can conjure up a big winner I’m sure he will turn down offers from schools with bigger budgets, better facilities, and larger salaries to stay at Tech because he loves the curriculum and the beauty of Techwood drive. He’ll bail just like the sainted George O’leary of probation fame.

Wait and See has a good point. Look at the first three Tech coaches who stayed for some 70 years, and then the ones after that. Those who were successful bailed out the first chance they got an left Tech with the revolving coaching situation — which is a killer. I hope this has been discussed with Johnson and that a commitment has been made that he will not pull this on the Jackets. We need some stability.

What I saw was a pretty darn good defense (1&2). The offense will come when they are not playing against their own defense who can predict the plays. Also, as pointed out there were some key players left out of Saturday’s practice. 2008 may not be great but I bet 2009 will!

I don’t take pride or feel good when a young man at Tech dies from heroin, or a recruit drinks underage, or when two professors are caught lying and cheating at Tech. I don’t even get excited about a Tech professor stealing from the state or Reuben selling pot or Anthony Hargrove being suspended from the NFL for drug abuse. But when a Georgia player goes the wrong way on a moped or drives while holding a beer or is caught walking on campus with an open beer or an old Ga running back is arrested for due it seems the Tech fans love it, can’t wait to vent it and never let it go. You Tech fans are the most pompus, pious people in the nation and that is why you are sorry. You brag about how much money you make, how you are all bosses and then can’t even cough up enough money to build a proper practice facility for the basketball team. Pitiful

Bill Fulcher and Pepper Rodger’s teams could have beat any of these GT “ACC” teams, and would have probably been very competitive with the NC team in ‘90. Lets face it, the ACC affiliation has contributed to the demise of this football program. This program has not been a real football power since it left the SEC. I will always be a GT fan, but I am a realist. The nature of this game has changed drastically, its not about academics, its about MONEY! The schools that are at the top will continue to “tweak” the academics that will allow them to attract the top athletes. Anybody who thinks that you still recruit student athletes are living in a dream world.

Leave the success of GT to CPJ.

He and our players are 110% capable.

As for curriculum, Tech has a great niche (management, engineering). Yes, management…..since way back in the ‘40’s…my ring is so inscribed(BS—IM).

When you try to be everything to everyone you end up meaning zero to anyone.(Think of a few?).

Go Johnson and Jackets!!!

Relax and take a breath Techater! UGA fans are still the WORST college football fans in the nation! I have NO idea what one thing has to do with the other, but I’m sure that in your rose colored world, you can compare and contrast someone who has died of a heroin overdose to the overall thugs that are recruited at UGA. Good Grief get some HELP!

Techater:

I bleed White and Gold, but I think it’s stupid for any college student to be put through the legal or disciplinary wringer because they had the nerve to pop open a cold one. The drinking age needs to be put BACK TO 18, like it was when the boomers were in college. No laughs from me if any adult gets picked up for possession underage. I’m almost 41 and I STILL think Legal Age 21 is stupid.

http://www.chooseresponsibility.org

Now, back to COFH: Pitiful is when there’s more Tech alumni than UGA alumni in Virginia and Tennessee, as evidenced by the fact that you can get a GT Va. or Tenn. license plate but not a UGA Va. or Tenn. license plate.

Now do you have an idea why our home game attendance is so much smaller than yours?

And if you want something we won’t let go, here’s a couple names: Jan Kemp and Jim Harrick.

I can remember in the Lewis era and some before like Curry where Tech wasn’t even a factor. We had some of the most odd lot athletes ever assembled, like the team that lost to Furman. We had Calvin Johnson go through our campus like a ghost, yet during a good part of my life Tech could never attract an athlete like him. We now have Dwyer. Dwyer will be a big time player especially in this offense. The coaches are keeping these guys under wraps why give next years opponent a heads up and with Gailey, talent easily went under used or unnoticed on offense so keeping a secret should not be hard until next season.

Tech wil be very good in a couple of years. Johnson is a terrific coach who has won at every level he has played. The team will be exciting, and the fans will come out in droves. That being said - we are going to get crushed this year. A new system with players who were recruited for a different type of game plan altogether…4-8 seems about right.

After reading about Tech’s spring game in the AJC, I bet that Jacksonville State and Garnder Webb are licking their powerful chops in anticipation of facing GT’s “new” thirty year old offensive scheme. That offense might beat Lehigh and Temple and Army for Navy, but it ain’t gonna cut it against the two football powers mentioned above or mighty Duke and NC State. And I will be shocked if it even crosses the 50 yard line against the Dawgs!!

By GT

April 22, 2008 2:15 PM | Link to this

You know Georgia Southern could have beaten Duke, I think Navy did, so now that you have better players and the same coach these teams start beating Tech? But then Duke beat Gailey, need we forget. Everybody beat Gailey at least once. Now Duke is getting serious about football, new coach, new commitment, more money. The ACC needs somebody too. A few years ago they were the number one drafted conference by the NFL and the SEC had to stop drinking beer and eating pickled eggs long enough to notice. The conference was won by Wake two years ago. I think Duke looked out the ivy covered windows and took notice. Anybody that gets half way serious can own the ACC football the same way Duke use to own basketball and still shares it with Carolina. Now Tech has something going too and I think Johnson took notice the same way Duke did and picked Tech as his new home. If you can’t get rich losing in the SEC, you might as well win in the ACC.

How will GT stop a Pro Style offense when they see option every day at practice. There is no way the scout team can’t simulate UGA’s offense.

P.S. - A nine win season for GT in ‘08 is a bit of a pipe dream.
