What does Paul Johnson expect?

Today’s topic: A little about how Paul Johnson approaches expectations.

It is still far too early to ask a new head coach what he’ll expect of his team, so the first question I asked (multi-pronged) in this regard was: How in your first year will you arrive at your expectations going into the season, how will you decide what will be satisfactory, do you set certain benchmarks in terms of wins, average rushing yards per game, points allowed that if not met will determine if the season was pass or fail? I wanted to know what he will look for in predicting what his team will be capable of this fall.

Bad idea. How could I forget? Coaches in general hate predictions, perhaps none moreso than Johnson’s Tech colleague, Paul Hewitt. Short precursor: Johnson said he’s not one to set what might be called tangible expectations, like win this many games or the season’s a bust, etc. More:

“I have a hard time dealing with that. At the Naval Academy, they had not won that much, and once we started winning (43 games over the last five seasons), at the end of the season I could never enjoy … one year we were 10-2 and ranked (No. 24), and I couldn’t let go of the two we lost,” he said.

Translation: He reached a point at Navy, once he and his staff settled in, where he expected to win, win and win again. He’s not alone among coaches in that regard, although he earlier said sometimes no matter how grand your schemes and ideas are, “physical superiority on some days cancels all else out.”

Continuing … “My expectations are to handle the things you can handle, and don’t worry about the other stuff,” he said. “We need to try to be as good as we can be, get better every day, and then my expectation right now is to get ready for Jacksonville State.”

Sounds like he will be big on the way coaches and — through trickle-down — players set some expectations, however, and there is at least one excuse he won’t allow the defense to “expect” to be able to use as a crutch in the event time of possession is tilted badly away from his team on a given day. Here ‘tis:

“One of my biggest peeves, and I guess it started from when I was a defensive coach, was when the defense says, ‘We’re wore out,’ ” Johnson said. “Well, shoot, stop [the other team on third down] and come out. That’s what the other side is doing. I think from a coaching standpoint, if you have kids that come off the field and do that, you say, ‘Bullcrap’ [to them].”

There are, of course, expectations of all kinds. The kids Tech (and everybody else) recruits have expectations, and sometimes there is no way around them. When that happens, steer clear of those kids even if they meet Tech’s other criteria.

“Any time in recruiting when all a kid’s heard about for the last few years is the University of Georgia, and the stadium is bigger, it holds 90,000 and they draw more fans, hey, if you’re looking for those bells and whistles, OK.

“Now, if you’ve got a kid who’s thinking I want to be an architect, or a kid who’s thinking 10 years down the road, OK, well then, 60,000 is as good as 90,000 and he’s not going to worry about who has the bigger weight room and like that, [Tech will] get those kinds of kids I think. Those are generally kids who are motivated differently.

“That doesn’t mean that the state schools don’t get great kids, too, because they do. They might want to be a journalism major, or something at another school, like sports medicine. There’s a lot of kids that drive kids to pick schools. I’ve seen kids pick a school because of the jersey.”

Moral to that story: Figure out early in the process what a recruit’s priorities are, and if they are too far off what Tech has to offer, don’t waste time and money recruiting him if he’s not likely to be persuadable. Again, not a novel concept, but there’s a lot to be said — in my opinion — for candor like that stated above.

On to Saturday’s spring game.

Nice job in Johnson giving backhanded shots at UGA. He’s definitely made it easy for UGA fans to not like him. Will he be able to back up the disdain on the field? My guess is yes, but not for a few years or so.

Where did he give a backhanded shot to UGA? He said you guys get great kids too:

“That doesn’t mean that the state schools don’t get great kids, too, because they do. “

He’s just stating the obvious that different recruits have different reasons for picking schools.

You’ve got to like that you can use quotes from the Tech head coach again. That has got to make your job easier and will hopefully lead to more blogs and articles like this one (the kind that keep my interest throughout because they contain content). I like that someone from Tech is providing some material other than, ‘um, well, you know, we’ve got to get better, um, yeah’. Thanks Matt and CPJ.

CPJ should expect to win around 8 games a year. With FSU (albeit even on a rotation), Miami, and Clemson getting back to prominence, not to mention the University over in Athens dominating year in and year out, between 7-9 wins every year is not unrealistic. Tech should play in a few Chik-Fil-A Bowls, maybe the occasional Gator Bowl. Sound about right?

johnson will do a good job at Tech. How good is the question. Even Johnson is indeed a world beater, then he’s not going to stay at Tech. That is, if Tech’s academic standards are as rigorous as its nerd fanbase suggests, then he won’t want to deal with it. He’ll be off to Nebraska. This might sound weird, but the best case scenario for Tech is for him to average 8.5 wins a season. That way, Tech always has a winning team, but not so good as to where an elite program would want to hire him away.

I must admit, I find it funny when people point to Paul Johnson’s “Air Raid” offense when he was at Hawaii. At Hawaii? If some of you can reach back far enough, there was another team from Hawaii in 2007 that “threw it all over the lot” and scored a lot of points. What happened to them? Oh yeah, they ran up against a FAST and ATHLETIC team from dawgland that completely embarrassed and humiliated them on national tv, limiting the statistically best offense in the country to 10 points. So, touting CPJ’s prowess at Hawaii is probably not a very good scale for judgement. Cite Johnson’s offense’s results against a REAL defense if you want to impress this dawg.

Vince, shut up and go wash the dishes. All anyone needs to do to see what CPJ can do against FAST & ATHLETIC defenses is to take a look at last year’s Navy-ND game. Did ND have a suck-a* year ? Yes. But that doesn’t take away the fact that they were loaded ATHLETICALLY on defense.

It will be interesting to see what CPJ can do now that the athletic gap between his teams’ and others has been significantly reduced.

Ugag is absolutely loaded this year and should be in the BCS title game. I doubt Tech wins at your place. However, the days of automatically chalking up a “W” are over.

BTW, Herschel never exhibited any multiple personalities with me. However, he is twice your size. Now go do those dishes !

And, the guy is a competitor who will not back down from any team.

I am impressed with CPJ’s overall approach and comments. He has a great resume and will likely have a significant amount of success as long as the fans and media give him and his staff time. Dan Radovich also deserves credit for this hire and the excitement surrounding the football program.

I am also very happy to read numerous fair/positive articles and blog headlines in the AJC…….hopefully the days of constant negativity are a thing of the past. Has anyone else noticed the overall tone of the bloggers is also much more positive.

SUGGESTION…..if all of the GT fans reasonable bloggers will simply ignore the radical/ignorant bloggers (as we all have with the ridiculous tickle pile moron), they will eventually become bored and quit wasting our time and thier own time. It is worth a try anyway!

I too think PJ is a quality college football coach and his sucess at GS and Navy is undeniable. However, I have the same nagging concern many others share: Is this offense something we should be happy with OR concernd about? — I hope Tech at least tries to build a program that can compete for national rankings and BCS bowls, rather than being content with 7 or 8 win mediocrity. — I know a lot of top players regard college as a stepping stone to the pros, and I wonder if many will feel that this offense is not suited for their development and exposure. — We already know that receivers will not be beating the door down to come to Tech. — If the top programs in the country wouldn’t run this offense, are we just conceding that we can’t compete on their level?

I can only pray that PJ finds a way to balance the run with a solid passing game, or I’m afraid we will never be consistently competitive on a national level.

Destin, if TECH was content with 7-8 win seasons Paul Johnson wouldn’t be here, Chan gailey would still be here. Secondly your concern with the offense is unfounded. The media and other people that also don’t understand football are creating this stir about the offense. An option offense that is executed correctly and blocked right can’t be stopped. Why?? Because the defense can’t be right. If the DT takes the dive the QB pulls the ball and if the DT doesn’t take the dive the QB gives it to the dive back. The same is true with the DE. So if we do a good job of blocking, that includes the WR’s and slot backs as well the OL we’re in good shape. Everybody wants to talk about the O, we still have to play D and special teams. There are 3 parts to the the equation. Destin we will also attract a lot players that don’t necessarily fit other offenses but are still good ball players. We will also be able to attract good defensive players b/c they’ll know when our opponent goes down by 2 TD’s they’ll have to get one dimensional on offense real fast which any defensive player would love.

It’s not what Paul Johnson expects that is baffling : It’s what Georgia Tech expects us to believe that for 7 months now since back in last October, that Tech has paid $418,000 dollars for 2 French professors married to one another, neither one of which has been at Tech since October.

Now, what I would really like to know please ?

How in the hell does the Georgia Institute of Technology pay two (2) professors $418,000 a year in salary and NOT KNOW THEY HAVE NOT BEEN TEACHING AT TECH SINCE LAST OCTOBER 7 MONTHS NOW ?

Who has been “teaching” their classes ?

We have Won 7 in a Row. We also had Won 7 in Row before Georgia Tech was put on its 2nd NCAA PROBATION Major Infractions Database for playing 17 student-athletes - not a 1 of which would have been eligible to play at ANY college in America - in any of the 4 different sports. The 11 football players at Tech who won those 3 games in a row were your top all-conference football players of George O’Leary. None of the 11 Tech football players were eligible at the time. Not 1. This is why Tech was put on NCAA PROBATION - including SIX (6) LOST FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIPS for the 2007-2008 Football Season.

To clarify the above INCORRECT INFORMATION then…

UGA Won 7 in a Row. Tech played 11 all-conference football players for 3 seasons, not a single one of the 11 of which were in fact eligible to play football at ANY school anywhere. The NCAA put the Georgia Institute of Technology on NCAA MAJOR INFRACTIONS DATABASE PROBATION in 4 sports (Dave Braine AD G. Wayne Clough President - both now gone for it) for the 2nd time in Tech’s history for those 3 seasons of ineligible players playing which the NCAA specifically pointed out in its public documents were your TOP 11 PLAYERS, all-conference players the NCAA referred to them as. Then, after you finished playing as your top 11 football players, 11 players not eligible to play football ANYWHERE, UGA has now Won 7 in a Row again. Not 1 year was Tech ranked ahead of UGA. Not once.

UGA Won 7 in a Row.

Tech was put on Probation for ACADEMIC CHEATING for 3 seasons of 11 ineligible players who were your top all-conference football players.

UGA Won has now then another 7 in a Row.

UGA has Won 7, Tech cheated for 3, and then UGA has now Won 7 More in a Row. That’s 14 of the last 17.

With 3 tainted.

What in the world is going on at Georgia Tech any more over there at North Avenue, pray tell please ?

Danny Hall says he knows NOTHING and NO ONE ON THE TEAM knows a thing either according to DANNY HALL, about any QUESTION AS TO MICHAEL HUTTS experimenting with DRUGS.

Georgia Tech, as it ALWAYS DOES, tried to COVER IT UP.

Your new Athletics Director for Georgia Tech tries his next spin job. He states that the kids are tested ONCE A YEAR.

Mark Hutts, Michael’s father states that it is common knowledge that Michael Hutts HAD BEEN EXPERIMENTING WITH DRUGS FOR SOME TIME NOW.

Probably because Danny Hall would NEVER play the kid, and the kid couldn’t deal with it.

Michael Hutts’ own teammate on the now UNRANKED GEORGIA TECH BASEBALL TEAM who is also Michael Hutts’ own roommate at Georgia Tech, states that it is common knowledge that Michael Hutts not only hung around with known Heroine Addicts but in fact also was known to be using the killer drug.

Now that Michael Hutts is DEAD from it Georgia Tech and Danny Hall, how about making a statement about how you test for drugs and why everyone but Danny Hall knew it for a long time ?

You’re a joke Georgia Tech.

You’ve been a joke Georgia Tech.

It’s one scandal after another with your sports’ teams.

You talk about this high and mighty top education at your spiraling downward school while UGA climbs up the US News and World Report rankings, while your student-athletes remain far below expectations.

………….. Bulldawg,

You are trash of the highest order. First off, lay off the Michael Hutts comments. There’s no cover up. He died. His roomate knew he used drugs. His coach didn’t. Pretty common. The only drug cover up was over in Athens a few years back with Quincy Carter’s … cough … cough … “nagging injuries” which Donnan lied about.

Contrary to your comments, the previous ineligible players WOULD have been eligible at UGA. But then again, who wouldn’t; UGA is a joke. These players didn’t fail classes. They made D’s in major (management, not your joke majors) courses requiring C’s to move forward. No such rule in “general studies” and “parks and rec management” at UGA.

UGA fans talking trash about football is one thing, but you have no room to talk about academics (especially considering you did not attend UGA). Georgia Tech’s “spiraling downward” has resulted in INCREASING to the #35 ranked university in the nation and a consistent top ten public university ranking. UGA’s “skyrocketing” has led them from unranked outside the top 50 to STILL unranked outside the top 50. Congratulations on your party school ranking, I hear that pays well.

As for Wayne Clough, he led this increased ranking. Michael Adams couldn’t shine Clough’s shoes, just ask anyone on the Board of Regents.

Second of all, if you wish to start discounting all the wins in the GT-UGA series where the winning team ended up being put on probation later on, that’s fine with us. That would just mean that Tech would all of a sudden lead the series.

What are the “academics” of the football student-athletes at Georgia Tech and at UGA ?

The NCAA Academic Progress Rate shows that Georgia Tech Football players have a LOWER APR than UGA.

It’s kind of hard to sit there and talk about the high and mighty Georgia Tech “academics” of your football team when the APR is WORSE at Tech than at UGA for the football players.

It’s kind of hard to sit there and talk about the high and mighty Georgia Tech “academics” of your football team when in fact the Georgia Institute of Technology LOST 6 Scholarships in Football 2007-2008 season for Academic Cheating NCAA Probation.

It’s kind of hard to sit there and talk about the drugs of Quincy Carter who did not die, and who did not do heroine while his roommates and coaches knew of his issues and brought him great shame.

But, you are shameless at Georgia Tech coming in here talking about how great Tech is with your high and mighty great numbers now in the NFL you say in this blog right here with your 19 NFL football players to UGA’s 50.

And, when we talk about top colleges in America that is NOT Georgia Tech because where you once had an advantage in academics, you have sold your soul to the devil in student-athletes.

The fact that you LOST 7 IN A ROW and then “won 3” which the NCAA put you on Probation for and now have LOST 7 IN A ROW AGAIN while you endure scandal after scandal academically, is not the topic you say for us to discuss.

Instead, we should discuss Quincy Carter from 15 years ago even if that makes Tech look far worse with Michael Hutts.

Who in the hell do you think you are fooling ?

You tried to cover-up Michael Hutts, not allow his teammate to be interviewed this weekend as Tech continues to drop every baseball game since his death. Danny Hall still today says there is no one on the baseball team who knew he had a drug issue.

And, you tried to cover up the 2 French professors paid $418,000 a year who have not been at Tech since October, 7 whole entire months. Who has been teaching those classes ? Graduate Assistants ?

It is NOT I, but the AJ-C who filled The Sunday AJ-C with 3 million readers reading about Michael Hutts they got under open records law in Georgia, not from Georgia Tech who think we do not know what is going on down there anymore at Georgia Tech in the “academics” of your student-athletes.

You have become the joke of college sports, while UGA has not only won 14 of 17, but also UGA has the better APR of the football teams at the 2 schools, and while we have been ranked in the Final AP Polls 11 consecutive years only to find that Tech doesn’t want to talk about the “academics” of your student-athletes as your football players jump ship such as every quarterback and every wide receiver leaving Georgia Tech with 21 percent women students and half Asians.

Hey ………..bulldawg, 12:55am is a little late to post when you have to be at the jiffy lube at 7. Mr. 10w30. You wrote nice things about Mr. Hutts after he died and now you throw him under the bus? That’s sad.

GT and UGAY bloggers taking shots at each other over graduation rates of jocks reminds me of two mules fighting over a turnip. Neither school has the bone fides to talk academic achievement when it comes to these bums. Athletes are let in college for the sole purpose of generating revenue for the school.

Could Tech recruit better athletes and win more games if they offered majors that required little math or reading skills? Yes. How about if Tech lowered their SAT requirements so that no athlete is denied admission (unless they didn’t finish high school, even then they would file for an exception to be made). Yes. If Tech accepted junior college transfers that didn’t have their academics in order coming out of high school? YES.
So, dawg fans, the reason UGA has had better results is they build their academics around the success of their football program and Tech is just the opposite. Tech players and coaches have to work harder to be successful but I would rather be competitive every year (and with PJ, we will be) AND be proud of the program.

Herb, I appreciate your concern for my well being with regard to my hate for Georgia Tech. However, college football is all I have in life. There’s nothing else for me. The life of a oil change jockey does not provide for a lot of enjoyment.

Oh yeah, I have a very small pecker too. But, at least I have Georgia Tech to make fun of….?

I am saddened by the loss of Michael Hutts and am not happy about the two Tech professors who lied and stole nor the one who used the credit card to steal. I am not jumping for joy that a Tech athlete was arrested recently for underage drinking not the fact that Reuben sold pot. What chaps me though is the piety of Tech fans when a Ga player is caught drinking and driving or going the wrong way on a moped without a liscense on him. You folks are just the most hypocritical people in the world. Keep that in mind.

GT Fan: Forget the UGA input here. Who cares about what we say as we waste our time writing this stuff. What Johnson needs is to do is splatter UGA on the field. Then apologize for it so UGA fans will feel better.
