Last practice before T-Day

Light fare today in Tech’s last practice before Saturday’s spring game/finale.

Players are in helmets, shorts, tops, etc., but no pads.

I spoke with coach Paul Johnson for a while this afternoon, and we touched on a variety of things. I’ll go into bits and pieces in a smattering of short stories and blogs eventually.

Part of what we talked about: perceptions, and how they’re often wrong, slanted, a hurdle and something he and his staff will have to sometimes fight. This can be media perceptions, fans’ perceptions, players’ perceptions of each other and themselves, etc.

I also asked for his assessment of his team’s chemistry/unity/cohesion, etc. His perception (there’s that word) is that he feels guys like each other well enough, but there was/may still be too much separation between groups (offense/defense, line/’backers, etc) in the way guys go about business. Too many guys thinking, ‘Well, I did my job, and if we lost (or screwed up a play), then somebody else screwed up,’ kind of thinking.

He said there has been improvement in that regard, and it remains a focus of the coaching staff: worry about and evaluate yourself/your unit, and don’t worry about/evaluate others. And so on.

More to come. Looking forward to Saturday, if I’m there (that’s to be determined).

I hope that Johnson can fet the focus from the team right away but it may take awhile. Patience is the order of the day for the fans. This is a good progrma with good athletes but it hit the wall with Gailey. To get over the wall will not be easy but it is doable. You do have to think as a team. It could be that there has been some of the “Idid my job” mentality but that is not a winning attitude and if it exists I am glad that Johnson is trying to get rid of it. But then again I tend to overanlayze some of these things as all fans do when they do not have much else to talk about.

I knew many players through classes etc. during the Gailey era and I always got that feeling from them too. It was like “Well I played a good game and if the so and so did his job we would’ve won” or “I really want to beat Georgia, but if we don’t, oh well, it’s just a game” I know Johnson is working hard to get rid of this mindset, that’s why he was the perfect hire for us. Looking forward to the spring game, is Nesbitt going to play Saturday?

I knew that Gailey was lacking as a college coach after several years of average play. However, it is now quite evident that he, and his staff (including Tenuta), were absolutely horrific. He was Bill Lewis reincarnated with dissention amongst the team.

The perception is this: Paul Johnson has historically said his team needed to improve overall and then won national titles (See Georgia Southern). If I were a GT fan (which I am, born and bred), I’d definitely be looking forward to this year.

dkg, Your conclusion is great news for Tech. If Gailey was horrific, then even a poor coach should win 9 or 10 games next year… an average coach should win 11 or 12. Thanks for sharing your revelation dkg.

Harmony, you couldn’t be further from the truth. Teams don’t harmonize because they’re winning. Teams win because they’re harmonized.

That’s why coaches like Bryant, Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, Saban, and Belichik generally win/won right away and consistently. They get everyone thinking the same way and have a team concept. “If you don’t like it, you’re fired/cut. Done. Anybody else have issues with the team concept we’re building?”

I see that same behavior in Johnson. I never saw that in Gailey (whom I don’t hate as much as ‘M’). That is why we’ll be successful in the long term. I also think that’s part of the reason for the defection we’ve had. It’s not just the scheme. That was the easy answer for some (and the true answer for others). Shoot, you hear all the time from Matt and Mike how much we’re passing in practice.

T-Bone,

I may not be there Saturday because I may be in Boston, covering the Hawks-Celtics series.

Mike will definitely be there, and so will a columnist (I believe). If I’m there, that will be three.

Like Mike wrote in response to a blogger yesterday, there may be more volume to our spring coverage than some realize. The reality is that about 40 percent of it does not reach print; it runs only on-line. Every weekday during spring practice, we’ve posted an on-line only story that a.m.

We’ve had print stories the day after every practice and scrimmage (those also run on-line), and one column so far (about P. Johnson, by Moore). There have been a couple other stories as well.

The paper has been smaller, and less is getting into print, and not just on Tech. We’re following the same schematic that was used to cover Georgia’s spring practices.

There have also been blogs almost every weekday, and a couple extras.

Again, more to come. I’ll write for tomorrow morning some of what P. Johnson said today, and perhaps blog more of it tomorrow. I’ll write for Friday a.m. more of what he said, and perhaps blog more of it Friday as well. Mike will write half a page or more in advance of Saturday’s spring game for the paper (and on-line).

thanks for the coverage Matt you and Mike have done a very great job these past couple of weeks during spring practices. i am glad the real fans come on here and show their true support for the team and the program. i understand how big this season is for our revivals down the street at UGA, with all the preseason hype and the chance to win a National Championship they have a right to be very excited and optimistic about their upcomong season. But so do we, we may not have the NC hype but we are in the beginning stages of a new era, the grass roots if you may. we are witnessing what could be the ground work for something special.i dont care about the number of passes we attempt a game or any of that stuff, i care about wins and i care about believing we can win. i dont know much about Paul Johnson but i get the impression that he knows how to win and wont be satisfied with losing. there were times i felt Gailey thought it was ok to lose to certain teams. not this guy, he has always won, he has always been successful and thats why i am so optimistic about the future f te program. we will have our stumbles this season and people will want him gone, but that the nature of the job. i look forward to this season and the seasons to come..

What still has come as a shock to me is the number of players the Gailey era is sending to the NFL. It reminds me a little of a few years under Pepper Rodgers when the schedule was pretty tough playing A National elite team like Notre Dame, Pitt with Tony Dorsett, and the Dawgs with several good players. Looking back to the that era some fans thought Tech should have won more with all that talent and one reason Pepper did’nt stay. That said, that guy did an incredible job considering the money/facilities/support was’nt there and there was no conference alignment. The point is many of us underestimated Gailey’s recruiting style the last few years in particular or maybe they did a good job of developing individual NFL type talent but there was a wall that could not be hit kind of like a golfer’s inability to break a certain score and it’s time to move on to something else. The excitement now is Johnson will do well recruiting and developing and scheming systems to allow Tech to break through that wall at some point. Hopefully that is not raising expectations too much but that is why these coaches are hired. The other thing is I’m excited about the potential for walkons in this program that have’nt been seen really since the Wishbone days, which allows Tech to bring in more players who are capable and want to be at Tech verse just looking at it like an obligation.

A heartbreak tragedy and great loss of a dean’s list student of a prominent family, whatever the cause, we just morn such a loss of a good-natured young man because it’s tough times for the Tech Family while his teammates have really taken the unexpected and hard to comprehend heartrending dreadful loss on the chin.

We would all like to extend our great heartfelt condolences and sorrow for the loss of the Georgia Tech pitcher.

Michael Hutts, a Junior from Wesleyan High School, is survived by his devastated parents Mark and Vicky in Dunwoody and brother Matthew. His roommate returned home to find him in the apartment by himself. He was only 21 years old. Mr. Hutts was a fun person to those close to him, a good person, a top-student, a fine looking gentleman, and an athlete in top form whose role on the baseball team was expected to expand this his Junior Season with a great ERA this season of 3.38. Michael was a 3-sport letterman at Wesleyan in Gwinnett. In cross-country, he assisted in the State Championship for his team (first 5 runners each school count.) And, while at 6’ 2”, he had also played on the basketball team, Mr. Hutts had set every high school career school record as a pitcher. A southpaw, he held school records for most career wins, most career strike-outs, most career innings, and ERA.

His role was going to have expanded this year and his senior season next year. Michael Truxden Hutts was a smart man. Danny Hall’s baseball team had just beat Georgia at Tech’s field and a day later, he expired. Tech tried not playing the next game; then added that to a double-hitter the following day. Recently, they had to cancel the game the day before yesterday to try to pull themselves together for the funeral. Last night, they were trying to find the strength together to put their hearts back into the game he loved and made so much fun for everyone. Hopefully, Tech can draw inspiration from the Answers. God Bless.

It is SO great to have a coach that knows what the heck he is doing. Chan Gailey was clueless. And all the people that made lame excuses for Gailey were equally clueless. Thank God and Greyhound that Gailey is gone forever. He should never have been hired…and letting him stay 6 years and rip Tech off for 11 million dollars, and DESTROY our beloved football program, is an abomination.

Matt,

The coverage of Spring practice on-line (the only way I read the AJC Sports section) has been fine. It’s just the perception. If you look at the Tech section versus the Ga section, there are always 5 bullet-point stories for UGA/SEC and only 3 for Tech/ACC. There are generally more headline stories in the off-season. And your tirade last week didn’t help!

CPJ had a coaches clinic last week and, correct me if my numbers are off, 300 GAHS coaches showed up. Last year under Gailey there were roughly 30. This is huge for recruiting and CPJ will be a general for the state of GA HS network. Good times ahead.

I think Gailey lost it after that heart attack. He will do better in the pros, where the customer is a lot less involved with the product. The real things the pros care about is public relations, which Gailey is pretty good at by being a Christian and wearing it on his sleeve. The people in protest of his firing were more about his character as they perceived it than about the product he was being paid millions to produce. I see middle age men like Gailey all day long, just going through the motions, nice because that is easier that controversy. When Ross woke up one day and lost it he said “I quit”, his pride would not let him take money he wasn’t’ doing his best to earn. His emotional investment had run out and he was honest enough to do the right thing.

Everyone, I have something to admit. The real reason I trash Chan Gailey constantly is that I want him sooo bad, but he ignores me.

I know that he was actually a “good-to-above-average-but-not-great” coach, who overcame many challenges but in the end just didn’t get enough done.

But…since he refuses to even CONSIDER going on a man-to-man date with me to Fire Island, I am going to continue to rail on him until he changes his mind and just gives me a CHANCE.

Tech won’t get any better under Johnson. He’s still gonna run that same ole triple option he’s always run. He won’t adjust it. If he was going to run “The West Virginia” as many on here claim, then all of those WRs wouldn’t have quit. Looks like Tech got snowed AGAIN by a guy who was a good DII coach, but will be mediocre at best against the big boys. I can’t wait to watch him melt down when the AJC media starts to come down on him. That guy has skin as thick as toilet paper. This could get ugly. To answer a couple of the questions on this blog:

It’s the No. 1 offense and the No. 2 defense against the No. 1 defense and the No. 2 offense.

The offensive line starters in recent practices: Andrew Gardner and David Brown at tackle Jason Hill and Joseph Gilbert at guard Dan Voss at center

No. 2s Nick Claytor and Clyde Yandell at tackle Trey Dunmon at center I’m doing this from memory and can’t remember the No. 2 guards

The depth chart is likely to undergo revision in the fall with the return of A.J. Smith, who was working at first-team guard ahead of Gilbert, and Cord Howard, who has been out all spring after foot surgery. Brad Sellers also has missed all of spring practice.

You didn’t answer my question. If he was going to run the offense he ran at Hawaii, why did all of Tech’s receivers either quit or decommit? He came to Tech to “by God run the football.” This should be funny to watch. And to say I’m “worried” about Tech is akin to is absurd. When your “rival” hasn’t beaten you in 17 years with eligible players, your “worry” tends to dissipate.

We will be just fine at reciever. Thomas and Earls will be fantastic, and our coaches (who just MIGHT know a bit more about the situation than you do) were secure enough about our talent at wideout to switch one of the best (Greg Smith) to A-back.

Have any of you tech people who are “in the know” heard anything inside on why those guys left or decommitted? Just curious. I’ve said before, I think you guys will be much better with CPJ, just don’t throw him under the bus if you don’t go 12-0 his first season. Zeb McKluskey -

There was definitely some doubt that affected a couple of wideout recruits, but it appears to have been misplaced (if the ratio of pass plays to runs that we have seen thus far this spring is any indication).

Adding to that was James Johnson’s ‘retirement’, but there is every reason to take him at his word that injuries and other things had just made him ready to stop.

One other bit of info that is relevant: Even though Navy threw the ball only 11 or 12 times a game last fall, they were 3rd in the country in yards per attempt. That, combined with Johnson’s Navy years and his statements since he has been at Tech, would really excite me if I were a Tech wideout.
