Final week of spring begins
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’m back at Rose Bowl Field after missing Friday’s practice and Saturday’s scrimmage to cover the Masters.
Injury updates: Quarterback Josh Nesbitt (groin) is back at practice, but after participating in the first couple of drills he has become a spectator again. Receiver Damaryius Thomas (hamstring) is in a red, injured player shirt. It doesn’t look like anything long-term.
It’s the smallest crowd at a practice this spring, probably because it’s cccccooollllddd out here.
And now it’s raining. Thankfully, it didn’t rain long or hard.
The quarterbacks and fullbacks did an interesting ball-security drill. They lined up side by side, each with a football, and had to roll under or dive over the guy next to them without letting go of the ball.
Jonathan Dwyer had a couple of good runs during 11-on-11 work, and Calvin Booker has thrown some accurate deep balls, including one to Tyler Melton.
Celebrity spectator: Former Tech running back Dorsey Levens.

Has anyone else noticed that Tech allowed Alabama and Clemson to run Tech out of its own town? Tech rescheduled its August 30th game with Jacksonville to August 28th so Tech would not have to compete with the Alabama-Clemson game at the Georgia Dome on August 30th. Now that is a sad indictment on the state of the Tech program. If Georgia State ever fields a D1 football team and joins Conference USA, the Tech program is a goner.

You couldn’t be any more incorrect. We moved the game because we are going to get ESPNU coverage.
Also it’s Alabama/FSU. Jeeez you are an idiot.
Do you feel like you are a bigger man? Trolling on a tech blog. I bet you get a big one, eh? Wow, get a life.

Davey it actually is Clemson/Alabama, not FSU/Alabama. You were right about ESPNU though.

UGAG REDNECKS….Unlike your program and it’s hypocrytical coach (God, values,God,church,Jesus, values)who talks about values, but recruits a bunch of Thugs,we actually have student athletes on our campus…Did you happen to notice that the NFL has suspended OTHUG Thurman for 2 years for the same behavior that netted him a 2 game suspension under Earnest Aingley Richt…Suit yourselves, but I cannot tolerate people who talk one thing, but their actions tell a different story…

Isn’t it wonderful to go to practice and see a REAL college football coach mold a team? After 6 long, unnecessary years under Chan Gailey, who is the worst coach in the history of Tech AND the NCAA, Paul Johnson is a breath of fresh air. Thank God and Greyhound that Gailey is gone forever…and all the Tech fans that tolerated Gailey and made excuses for him are truly pathetic.

Why don’t you UGA rednecks go to your own Blog. We don’t want your ignorant comments here. Spring practice has been a huge success and next fall we are definitely going to surprise some people. The fact that Paul has allowed our student athletes to participate in the student and alumni Tickle Piles has made a huge difference in attitudes on the field and also among fans and students. Football and Tickle Piles are fun again. THWG!!!

I spent 5 years at Tech and never heard of a Tickle Pile. What is a Tickle Pile and how did I miss them?

Tom, I think it means that unlike most Tech students and alums, you are either straight or good looking.

I sure hope that I will one day be as optimistic as a lot of you guys are. I’ve been a GT fan for 56 years and have never been this scared heading into the next 3 seasons. As far as Georgia fans go, they need to get the hell off this site and tend to their own knittin! If Paul Johnson can beat UGA with an option attack in this day and time, I’ll increase my booster $$ by double. The speed of the damn game is so different that when I was coming up. Back then, a perfectly executed wing T was damn near impossible to stop. I just don’t think it’s going to scare the likes of Miami, UGA, BC, VT, FSU, etc. Someone please convince me otherwise! At any rate, Go Jackets! I’d rather be a fan of a losing Tech squad than a fan of a NC UGA squad. I believe Marc Rich is going to have his damn hands full keeping that clan out of trouble this off season. Maybe if enough of them go to jail, we will sneak in and eak out a victory! By the way, does anyone know where that Referee is now that called that fumble on Jasper Sanks in the late 90’s? If you do, tell him I’d like to speak with him about making a return to officiating. It will be a very lucrative deal for him!

Ned:
I am very optimistic. We won’t always have the best athletes on the field, but we will always have the brightest. They just need to learn how to win. Discipline, commitment and attention to detail are all key components to winning and I believe CPJ knows how to teach those life lessons. I will be surprised if our offense doesn’t quickly evolve into a sophisticated attack after our guys master the “simple” spread option basics and more passing is included.
If nothing else, I have no fear of our team quitting during a game as they have so many times over the past several years. That in itself will restore a great deal of pride.

Yeah, I’m with you. At the very least we can always say, “See that guy from UGA steaking past our Corner towards the end zone, he’s not as smart as our nose guard.” Or, “Knowshaun just ran for 180 yards and 3 scores, but did you know he only has a 105 IQ?” Here’s a good one: “The score is 42-10, UGA on top. But did you know that the cumulative classroom GPA’s of Tech players is 3.05 and only 2.88 at UGA?”
Come on, let’s face it. We recruit the same “thugs” as does UGA. We just don’t get that many of them lately. Nesbitt was a welcome surprise.

Ned:
Please tell me you didn’t graduate from Tech! We had a couple of bad apples under CCG, but I fully expect that sort of thing to be history now. Why would you ever say Tech players are thugs?
In my not so humble opinion we have had more than adequate athletes to have beaten UGA 3 years running. But again, the offense did not know how to win. Calvin was wasted, etc.
Maybe you are just bored or bitter?

Yes, I did graduate from Tech. As far as the “thugs” line, I never refer to our players as thugs. I was just making fun of the ridiculous claims by Tech fans that I read all the time that UGA players are all “thugs.” Let’s man up and stop making ridiculous excuses. UGA is much, much better than us right now. Let’s get better and start beating them again. Calling them names does no good. It doesn’t make me feel any better to say that we are smarter. BS! Play football!!! If you want to discuss academia, go to a science or math blog. I’m tired of excuses.

FJ,
The “quotation marks” were supposed to show that “thugs” was something I often hear but don’t necessarily agree with. I never intended on calling any GT player a thug, especially not Josh Nesbitt. He is as fine a young man as I have ever met.

Pitbull,
In case you hadn’t been paying attention, the DOT is paving I-75/85 downtown and it will be an ongoing project thru November, and the work will be done M-Th overnight, but on Fri-Sun it will be done all day long. So not only was it a good idea to move the GT-Jax St game to Thursday for TV coverage, it also makes sense from a traffic relief standpoint. It will be a mad house regardless, but having two football games as close as Bobby Dodd Stadium and the GA Dome in the same day on top of road construction, would have been a disaster.

Maybe the Dawgs can use Tim Worley as a positive role model for the current players.

Ned:
I am right there with you. Sorry I misinterpreted the “thug” reference. To repeat, in my opinion we underperformed badly under Gailey, because he did not know how to win or coach young men. I do believe we have the brightest guys on the field which should be to our advantage!
I suppose I am optimistic because I don’t see why an option oriented run based offense won’t work at the BCS level. Essentially that is what Friedgen ran, and it was spectacular.
Keep the faith.
