Ball security emphasized, with a twist
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Maybe you thought Georgia Tech would emphasize holding onto the football today after a 14-fumble, one-interception scrimmage on Saturday. Well, the offense is practicing pitches, over and over and over, and when one does hit the ground there’s someone on it in a hurry. But the new drill I saw today was a defensive one, with players being taught how to strip the ball. You never can have too many takeaways, especially on a team where the offense is still trying to learn how to hold on for dear life.
It turns out Josh Nesbitt was a tad optimistic on Saturday when he told me he expected to be back at practice today. He’s out, still waiting on that groin to heal.
Guard A.J. Smith (elbow) has made a step forward. Instead of wearing a red non-participant shirt, he’s in a yellow no-contact shirt this afternoon.
Paul Johnson was happy with Luke Cox on Saturday and not so happy with most of his other ball-carriers, but things haven’t changed on the two-deep. On the first team: Roddy Jones and Greg Smith at A-back, with Jonathan Dwyer at B-back. On the second team: Andrew Smith and Austin Barrick at A-back, with Quincy Kelly at B-back. Jamaal Evans appears to be a sort of co-first-team A-back. He just lined up there opposite Jones.

Great job with these updates Mike. I know you often get a lot of flak, but you are doing fantastic…
Btw, does there appear to be any improvement in the pitching, and ball handling since Saturday?

Mike, Question:
Why is it that here on the main AJC Sports webpage, the UGA section always has 5 bullet-point stories and Tech consistently has only 3?

T-Bone, the UGA section also includes the police blotter so we geta couple of extra stories about which player got arrested for DUI that week.

If Austin Barrick is too big or slow for A-back, why not make him the short yardage B-back? I know Johnson loves a power I for short yardage and goal line situations (he always stuck an extra OL and sometimes a roadgrading DL in the backfield for extra blocking), so Barrick might find a home there.

StingerSplash, I think Barrick is being used in the A-back position as a derivative of a tight end.
I sort of like that option.

I think the kids could hold on to the ball better if all participated in the Tickle Piles. There, you learn to strengthen your grip!

I don’t know if you realize it or not Yellowblood, but I think many of us have gotten to enjoy instead of being offended by your posts…. You have gone from being the real jerk to the court jester. If thats what you were going for, then you’ve made it. If not, well, then, I guess you’re done.

Mike,
Why is it UGA articles average 209 words and Tech articles only average 208? Why is it the AJC talks about Georgia in the top 10 but it doesn’t talk about Tech in any ranking? Why does the AJC hate me? Did I do something to offend the AJC?
Anyway, looks like PJ has things on the right track. If we can cut it down the fumbles to about 8 per game we might actually beat Duke this year. Go Jackets and THWG!!!

Tech folks, now I’ve jested with you guys on our dawg blogs, but let’s get serious. Some of you are tauting a complete turn around this year. Have you read your own blogs by your new coach?? I truly believe you guys are heading in a new and great direction, but some of your posters are a bit delusional. Don’t you guys understand how long it takes to learn a brand new offense??? Will you eventually get it…YES…will it be this year, who knows! Will some of you tech bloggers who understand football please come out of the woodwork and handle your own?? If you guys beat us this year because of CPJ and the new offense, then I promise you I’ll still be here. I can eat crow with the best of them, I prefer it grilled though.
All jokes aside, good luck to your program. You deserve it. But you tech folks that keep throwin insults to us are fair game.

Confucious say new nerd offense is silly and impractical. Worked against Wofford and Furman, even against horrible Notre Dame papists. Funny nerds on blog think option will be successful against real defense? Confucious laugh his @ss off!

Now Confucious, play nice. We don’t need any other tech people mad at us. I just gave the tech nation a compliment(kind of) in a previous blog and I stand by that. They’re on the right track, give them that. Save your comments for when they beat us, and they will, cause we’ll need all the clean hate we can muster.

Dawgy, Zeb is a DGD and has been posting on these blogs for a long time. If You were a real Dog fan You would know where his monicker came from. I, like Zeb, have been posting here for a while, and, like Zeb, I have heard all the insults ad-nauseum. If YOU were a real Dog You would know that the Georgia Southern program was started by Erk Russell, the inventor of the “junkyard dawg” defense. You would know that He was Coach Dooley’s right hand Man. You would also know that Paul Johnson was mentored by Erk and You would show Him some respect. We veterans would like to see these posts cleaned up, but We have each others backs. Screw around with Zeb and We will ream You a new one. Comprende?

Things did look better on offense today than they did Saturday. I spent most of my time watching the defense, though, so I can’t give you any numbers to back up my assertion, just a general sense of what I saw in the 11-on-11 segments.

shane: Just me sayin, dawgy has a point. Techies never show us any respect, so none is due in return. This dawg understands what Erk meant to our program, but my respect for him is limited to just that. Paul Johnson has never had anything even remotely nice to say about us up here in Athens, and that includes when he was at GSU, so no respect is due to that guy, Erk ties withstanding. And by the way, threatening to “ream” somebody from behind a keyboard is pretty cowardly. In fact, it reminds me of something a techie would say. Err, type.

i have to admit…. i was reading a blog the other day an there was nary a yellow blood post. i thought to myself wtf where is this guy. seeing yellowblood on our blog is kinda like seeing the retarded family member at the family picnic. he kinda grows on you.
you know he does stupid things. you know he says stupid things. you know he probably doesnt have the ability to even comprehend what a profound thought is much less come up with one. yet…..
he has a flat oversized head. his protruding eyes have a bit of a vacant stare to them. none of his features are symentric and he drools while he picks his nose an eats it yet……
he is our yellow blood.
glad to see ya back buddy.
personally i think that uga fans should never breed but what do i know.
i have to ask… is it true that he is the uga qb’s lil brother? that would explain his preoccupation with tickle piles n spooning. anybody know for sure?

I meant ream in the verbal sense. I was a lot nicer to Dawgy than I would have been on the UGA blog. As far as attacking Zeb he had no point. I have never met Zeb but We are blog buddies, and I will jump on anyone who attacks Him with both feet. Zeb has done the same for Me. Some of Us are on this blog because We like football, but when the trash talking starts We regulars start to disappear, because We don’t like it, and because when You have heard it all a thousand times it is BORING! Now I have taken up enough of these good peoples space and I am going back to My Own blogs. BTW, I know that some Tech fans are Jerks and run Their mouths on Our blogs, some UGA fans are jerks too, but the rest of Us don’t have to lower Ourselves to that level.

Good blog. To me we’re going to have to develop at least 3 qb’s at all times who are adequate to handoff, pitch and throw even if we have some injuries. The QB will take some hits in this offense. As for Barrick the TE package/HB/short yardage/possession reciever package seems like a good idea plus maybe he can rotate into a few 3rd string positions as an emergency stop gap if we have injuries (even on defense) which I don’t see right now. It also seems we are going to need at least 3 deep at the A and B back positions at all times in the Fall. Overall I like the way the Defense is shaping up and the offense is showing some potential particularly considering this is new to what they are used to doing. Forget about Saturday..it was raining, it’s a totally new offense two weeks old, we ran twice as many plays as a normal game, the 2nd string qb was in there more of a passer, and most of the fumbles were snap and pitch things that can be corrected but I still believe we can compete in this offense with the qb’s we have and it will get even better in the fall. They just need practice.

As for the offense looking bad Saturday: The mechanic has just popped the hood. You can’t expect a finely tuned machine just yet. The timing needs a lot of adjustment and the battery is still being charged. A few parts are going to need some replacing and others some conversion.
This is a work in progress and in the very beginning phase. Be a little patient. Realistically, it takes time, a lot of sweat, and a million reps to create a well oiled machine.
Expect the ‘O’ to progress greatly from the start of the ‘08 season to the end. It’s all about finding a rhythm and chemistry with the offensive unit. And of course, finding a QB, who is athletic enough and has the ability to lead.

Thank you Zeb and Shane. It would be nice if these blogs could talk football instead of all these stupid and meaningless attacks. Ditto CJ.. I think most people want blogs to be insightful and not spiteful. Too bad a few idiots on both sides cause everyone else to filter through the garbage for some real substance.
I propose that the AJC set up a GT/UGA hate blog. All the idiots can take their immature rants and statements there and the rest of us can blog about the actual topics of discussion.

To all the mutt fans who think Tech fans have an inferiority complex: If you ARE so superior, why do you take the time to read and post on this blog? Hearing footsteps, are we?
As far as our defense, how much different are the formations than what Tenuta used? Do you see the change in defensive strategy affecting our recruiting?

I have been reading these blogs for years now, and I guess it is time I start saying something. I am excited about the CPJ era at Tech and can’t wait for some great games each and every November. Attending UGA coming out of a clear Tech family wasn’t easy, but it makes for a great Thanksgiving every year. Good luck with CPJ. He is a great choice, and a good change of pace for your program. There won’t be 14 fumbles a game when the season gets here, so don’t worry. Sic’Em!

A tickle pile is a time-honored tradition at the Atlanta Polytechnic Institute, home of the bees. It’s where all fraternity men jump into an impromptu pile and start tickling each other. It looks g@y as heck, but they seem to enjoy it. Then again, if it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck…

For those of you worried about ball protection, fear not. Anyone remember the movie, “Remember the Titans?” That team fumbled the ball so much in their first summer practices using the same system Tech is using now. That hard a$$ coach that was played by Denzel Washington reminds me of CPJ, just that, a hard a$$’d no nonsense type of coach. That team did pretty good at the end of the year. lol
