Tarrant makes an impression

Saturday morning’s scrimmage marks the midway point of Georgia Tech’s spring football practice, so I guess it’s not too early to nominate a guy as having been a pleasant surprise.

I might pick Jerrard Tarrant, the redshirt freshman from Carrollton. I don’t

Tarrant moved ahead of Mario Butler to work at first-team cornerback on Wednesday, and he’s also getting practice time as a punt returner and kickoff returner. He was on The AJC’s Top 50 prospects in Georgia list in 2007.

Today was the first day I’ve seen Tech practice kickoffs. In addition to Tarrant, Tyler Melton and Correy Earls were back deep fielding kickoffs. Melton, Tarrant, Roddy Jones, Jamaal Evans and Andrew Smith practiced punt returns.

It’s raining out here, but practice goes on. The blog doesn’t, though. I don’t want to short out the AJC’s computer.

Wow, what a downpour. It sent the dozens of coaches who are here for this weekend’s coaching clinic scrambling for the practice field’s lone shelter. Practice continued, of course. Only lightning stops that.

The defense has been working nickel formation all day, with linebacker Kyle Jackson on the sideline and Tarrant playing the nickel or “Husky” position, and Butler and Jahi Word-Daniels at the corners.

On offense, Joseph Gilbert is getting a lot of time at guard, with A.J. Smith (elbow) not practicing.

I spoke with a high school coach from Ohio who was very impressed with David Brown, who has been working at right tackle. He said Brown is an excellent fit for that position in Paul Johnson’s offense. Tackles coach Todd Spencer just got so excited about Brown’s block on the last running play Spencer ran down the field to slap hands with him.

Is there any news on Dywer. Early indications showed he was demoted to 2nd unit and about 10-12 lbs overweight. Is he picking up things any better?

Unfortunately, Dwyer left the team. The RB getting the most reps now is a walk-on named Wally Yappo. Remember that name.

Joseph Kerr, AKA White Lightning, who committed to GT on April 1, 2008 is a running back out of KY. People are saying great things about him already. Can’t wait to see him at the flats in 2009 and making a huge impact. He might go down as the best running back in GT’s history.

CPJ has to be given kudos for holding practice in the rain; good time to work on the triple option, particularly handoffs and pitches. As a side note, amid the worst of the downpour, CPJ decided to give walk-ons a chance to see how they would perform during actual game conditions, with the added pressure of knowing that they were replacing a player who had been “injured” and could no longer play (CPJ allowed Dwyer to “leave the team” in order to further create a more realistic situation as well as additional pressure on the substitute to perform). Yappo is one of the finest physical specimens on the practice field (6’-3”. 225lbs of chiseled muscle, a reported 4.35 forty), but he fumbled eight of nine times on a practice dive play, and the one time he managed to hold onto the ball, he slipped and dislocated his shoulder trying to break the fall. Yes, we do need to remember that name. And opponents need to remember the names of everyone who will someday soon shove the ball down their throats and prove to the naysayers that the T.O. works for a BCS school, rain or shine! CPJ will teach the 500 or so coaches here for the Clinic how it’s done, and we will have established a future recruiting pipeline that will have no peer. Can’t wait for the season opener! Go Jackets!

CPJ has to be given time but he will start to bring in some big time players who want to run up the score. Below is quote from Scout.com on Antonio Foster.

Has Georgia Tech moved up in your eyes?

“Yes sir they have at that. I’d say they are even with Florida as my top two.

to gtfan and others: Sure Hewitt might recruit long athletic guys who cant hit free throws for crap. But look at the Final 4 this year…you see the similarities there? Kansas, UCLA, UNC, and Memphis ALL have those types of players!
(the reason many picked GT to give Florida their toughest game in the tourney last year)

And also if you watch the NCAA tourney they call alot less fouls than in the regular season, which suites GT perfectly!
If GT does not try and bring back that assistant that left after 2004, ill be very dissapointed.
We need some new blood somewhere….i just dont think its the head coach thats the problem.
BTW…09 will be BIG!!

I heard that Tech may steal another rb recruit from Middle Tennessee State and a lineman is considering decommitting from Furman and is seriously looking at Tech and Valdosta State.

uh, note to potential stud OL recruits who want to go to the NFL, forget Tech, you will never learn to pass block, something I am guessing NFL scouts may want a little of.

uh, note to potential stud OL recruits who want to win, come to Tech because this system will give everyone fits just like West Virginia ran all over dem Dawgs in the Sugar Bowl. uh, note to potential stud OL recruits who want to go to the NFL and don’t care about team or winning, forget Tech, you will never learn to pass block, something I am guessing NFL scouts may want a little of. Go to an SEC school. Besides, they actually make the guys at Tech pass real classes, something SEC schools don’t make you do.

Uhhhh, Jamada….that’s an aweful fast 40 time for such a big guy…u think that’s legit? If it is…dam.

You are definitely a very learned and grammatical person. But…your projections about tech football are pure conjecture. Like I’ve asked tech fans before, please, please, please…..don’t anoint paul johnson the second coming of christ before the first snap of the season. It’s great to believe in your program and to have hopes lifted with the advent of a new coach, but man, what if things don’t work out??? I actually think they will. You guys will get better, and like I’ve said before, you will beat us again. It’s inevitable. It’s just that some of you tech people hate us dawgs so badly that you proclaim victory this year immediately because of your CPJ. It must be the difference in a fan, and people who ACTUALLY understand football. Tech fans, and a lot of you do, please bring something to the table as to WHY you are going to beat us this year. It may happen, but we want to know why.

Concerning the thread that says OL at Tech will not pave the way to the NFL. CPJ isn’t looking for that ‘specimen’ body that NFL teams are looking for anyway. He looks for somewhat smaller but quicker OL for his system. Sounds like a good recruitment tool to me. You are to small for other BCS schools and therefore NFL material so come to Tech for a shot at a NC.

I went to the rainy practice yesterday, and was very impressed with the coaching going on. I went to a lot of Chan’s practices and they were a lot quieter. Its very clear that if you are not there to hustle they will get in your face. I seen Jamal Evans not put out a lot of effort to get on a fumbled ball, and the coach got the ball threw it about 30 yards away then made him run and jump on it and after he did he had to run a lap. Theres no more of that seniority crap(jamals start against VT last year)!! Also if you havent seen a practice yet the defense looks very good and Fr wide receiver Tyler Melton is a STUD he made a spectacular catch while being hit and flipped almost upside down. I talked to him after the practice and he also seems like a great kid, very polite. Also met CPJ he is very approachable and will actually stop to talk to you. Some of the high school coaches kept him a little long but he was still very cordial and I was very impressed with my first practice experience of the year… The BEAT GEORGIA written everywhere was a welcome sight also.. GO TO THE SPRING GAME AND GET EXCITED ABOUT TECH FOOTBALL AGAIN LIKE I HAVE!!!

Zeb, you are exactly right. Our schedule is difficult this season, we have a new coaching staff, COMPLETELY new offensive system, almost no returning starters in the defensive secondary or LBs, and this offense only works if the OL, QB, and RBs are all making the right decisions. I would be suprised if we continue our Bowl streak this season! It is WAY too soon to think about beating a UGA team that will most likely be top 5 when we play them.

The future looks great and CPJ is very exciting, but do not base his success or failure on season 1.

ZEB, we will prevail because Josh Nesbitt will be the most unstoppable force in college football at that stage of the year.

Will he pitch, throw, or just run over defenders like Herschel did Bill Bates?

He will be Joe Hamilton, but much, much bigger.

Zeb, you are absolutely correct in saying that my projections about Tech football are pure conjecture, but no more so than those of pundits and fans everywhere whose preseason projections fail to materialize into reality.

You asked of me, and other GT fans to give you reasons WHY we would beat Georgia this year. I never said it would happen this year, but here are the reasons WHY it MAY:

First, CPJ will succeed in building a team which will exhibit in all aspects of play the following: discipline, mental toughness, and physical effort. This will result in few penalties, consistent and intense play even when down, and control of the line of scrimmage.

Second, the game plan to beat Georgia is elegent in its simplicity, as is the game of football itself (CPJ’s own view): 1. Stop the run (usually only one target here on Georgia’s side) 2. Confuse and pressure the quarterback (in Georgia’s case, single-threat) with the defensive line
3. Punish the defense by running the ball and moving the line of scrimmage forward (the triple option has a reputation of being a “four-down” offense, rather than “three downs and punt”). An edge to GT here is that CPJ calls his own plays for an offense of which he is the acknowledged expert.

IF the game plan can be executed without preventable penalties, we will win (but I don’t say that Georgia will not score any points!) Sweeter still will be the win will take place in Athens, it will be Georgia’s only loss of the season, and they will not have an opportunity to play for the MNC. If it happens, the Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry will once again, after a long hiatus, be as in the days of Dodd and Dooley.

The latest on Wally Yappo (his 4.35 40 matches that of Calvin Johnson in the NFL combine last year) is that he is transferring to UGA where he hopes to have an opportunity to show he has “the right stuff.”

Gee Jamada, I sure hope that the UGA -Trade School rivalry goes back to the way it was in Dooley vs Dodd because, Dodd’s bugs never beat a Dooley coached team. Dodd even thanked Dooley for easing up on his mighty Jerkits and holding the score down. As for coach Johnson’s smaller mobile linemen being able to trick or out quick the bigger guys they will face week after week remember the old Alabama linemen who were hostile, agile, and mobile but smallish and got trampled by USC and that made the Bear go after the big uglies to make his offensive and defensive lines the strengths of some of his greatest Crimson Tide teams.

Another Obnoxious UGA Fan

You missed the point of my post. Did not Vince Dooley, in his first year as coach (1964) beat Bobby Dodd who had previously dominated Georgia (at one point winning eight straight years from 1949 through 1956)? Substitute “Mark Richt” for “Bobby Dodd” and “Paul Johnson” for “Vince Dooley” and the light bulb should come on.

As for your comment comparing CPJ’s “…smaller mobile linemen” to the Alabama linemen who were “hostile, agile, and mobile”, you failed to mention that the entire Alabama team in that 1970 game with USC was all-white; USC had an all-black backfield, among whom was FB Sam “Bam” Cunningham who scored 2 TDs and ran for 135yds on 12 carries. The Bear went to LA the following year, with virtually the same team, and defeated USC 17-10. Did everybody gain 20-30 lbs within a year? Did he suddenly have more black athletes? No…the Bear went back to doing what he did best - coach defensive football utilizing the best players at each position. In that followup year (1971) the Bear went 11-0 regular season, but lost to a “hefty” Nebraska team 6-38 in the Orange Bowl.

But that particular nationally-televised 1970 USC thrashing of Alabama changed the face of Southern football forever, forcing the football factories of the SEC and the SWC to integrate in order to field winning football teams. That was an historic change.
