Philip Wheeler’s take on new defense
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There’s no shortage of former Georgia Tech football players dropping by spring practice this week. On Wednesday, I spotted former safeties Djay Jones and Jamal Lewis, Webmaster and former defensive end Adamm Oliver and former linebacker Philip Wheeler, and there might have been others.
Wheeler’s impressions: “They looked pretty good for the second day.” I asked him what difference he saw between the old defense and the new one. He laughed. “I didn’t see any blitzes,” Wheeler said.
My take: It’s a good sign when former players are invested enough in the program to show up to watch a spring practice or two.
My second take: Linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary, who spent a lot of Monday’s practice trying to get Kyle Jackson’s attention, appeared much happier with Jackson’s performance on Wednesday. With Wheeler and Gary Guyton gone, Tech needs Brad Jefferson and Jackson to step up and play alongside Anthony Barnes and Shane Bowen. Those four seem most likely to produce the starting three, though Travis Chambers didn’t rejoin the team for a redshirt senior season just to sit around.

Travis came in as a highly regarded linebacker. He has had some injuries but is now, hopefully, well and might be a real force.

all this talk of change. new this…new that… what did they expect? I want to hear about individual updates and how they are adapting to the option? We know there is change. My gosh, they are signing checks to a new name. We get it. All in all though, good updates, but a little more detail please.

How much does Johnson like to blitz? Which LB and S are most adept at the blitz?

Adamm Oliver (webmaster) stopped by the Atlanta Falcons forum to chat and stir up some pub for some websites of his. Nice guy, hope he gets drafted next month.

Confucious say triple option is joke offense. Much ineffective. Georgia Tech will win 6 game. Lose on Smurf Turf once more. Bees shall feel much humiliation at hands of Georgia Bulldawg. Many angry nerds everywhere.

What with Coaches “Flocking” to get a look at this “New” Offense at Tech??? And former players stopping by practices. I guess UGA should just go ahead and conceed the game for this year. Give me a break!!! Knobler has obviously put his Tech cheerleading uni on as well as his rose colored glasses. Mike FYI HS COaches have and will continue to visit college (and pro camps) if and when they can to look for little wrinkles they might add. It is not the “greatest thing since sliced bread” aspect that Johnson’s O offers as you might suggest. For pete’s sake some HS’s still run the old Notre Dame box and there are clinics held each year to swap ideas on this.

hey Gee Tech, there aren’t any details yet. Gotta walk before we can run here and the players are just learning fundamentals at this point. They gotta master the movements, signals, yada yada. I’m sure more details will come (hopefully sooner than later) to the blogs and the ajc.

WaveGT: If you want to get technical about it, I believe both “Confucius” and “Confucious” are accepted spellings for the philosopher. I would think you have lots of interaction with asians, going to GT and all (or do you not go to Tech?), and thusly you would understand that English phoenetic interpretations of Chinese symbols and names are fluid at best. In other words, there is no King James version of translating Chinese names into English. Idiot.

I am glad former Tech players are showing up at Spring practice. That is good news. A lot better than Barack Hussien Osama might be our next president; with Louis Farrakan as vice president and Jeremiah Wright as white house advisor. And lets not forget about Opra Winfery’s fat mouth.

Dawgly….Just like a Dawg to start hurling insults. Are you that insecure that you have to poke fun at the demographics of GT? And by the way every Academic source I’ve examined has Confucius spelled with the “cius” and not the other.
By the way, why in the hell are you reading GT blogs if you’re an UGA fan? Don’t you have anything better to do?

I guess all veteran comments are overlooked. I complimented Insider, gt81 and carolina for the lucid comments on another blog, and their willingness to assimilate with other teams….mainly UGA folks. I guess I’m going to have to say it again… why in the hell are so many people… UGA and Tech….just feel like they have to go for the throat with everyone from a different team on these blogs???? Tech folks, I’m glad you have a new coach and a new direction, you should be very excited about that. It’s inevitable, you will beat us again, most common sense GA fans know this. When it will happen….could be this year or the next. Trust me, most of us know it’s going to happen. So why don’t some of you just chill out and enjoy the ride that is Paul Johnson. See what he brings, but don’t anoint him the 2nd coming just yet. A new system takes more than a year to learn. Now you guys have some very smart players, we all understand that, but don’t crucify the guy if you don’t win the ACC next year. Just be patient. I, for one, think you guys are going to be back where you should be. Now, for you tech fans, like John, who actually think that UGA or it’s fans are scared because you have PJ, put the crack pipe down. I have just praised your program, but I promise you I’ll defend mine. If you beat us this year, I’ll still be here. I don’t hide. But some of you techkies are a little delusional and have probably never played football in your entire life. Talk all you want. Let’s just see what happens on the field.

I agree with Zeb. Some of Us Dog fans, Who are a little more reasonble, enjoy talking football with Our North Ave brethren. Why doesn’t everybody lighten up on the trash talk? A bit of give and take can be fun, but We blog veterans have heard all the insults before and they get old. On to CPJ. IMO, Tech will be one of the more intresting teams to watch next year. I don’t expect the Man to walk on water, but I expect renewed excitement at Grant Field. I, like Zeb, hope You guys will be patient with Your new Coach, I think You have a good one. Sorry to be butting in on Your blog, but the AJC hasn’t given Us anything to post about!

I’m excited about the new regime at GT and see a more competitive series with UGA down the road. To those mocking Coach Johnson’s “high school” offense (17 years coaching HS here), here’s the deal: for every pro-style passer coming out of HS, there are ten great option QB’s that college coaches are trying to turn into DB’s or wideouts. GT won’t get the Matt Staffords of the world but we WILL get the Joe Hamiltons. Fair trade!

If you bring something of value to the blog all true GT fans will appreciate your thoughts.
For the mindless trash throwing mutts on this blog perhaps you should consider logging onto the Gator’s blogs and attempt your mindless classless attepmts of the big bad bully on there.

GT81, I think the operative word in You post was footballer. Imo, most trash talkers have never played a down, not even in hs. The talk goes both ways, Tech guys like to come on the UGA site and call Us rednecks and thugs. We both know that real rednecks can’t afford to go to college games and do not own or know how to use a computer. It would not be wise to call a genuine redneck thug that to His face! I am intrested in Johnson and His methods. I like the way He recruits players that haven’t had a lot of national attention if He thinks They will fit His system. Richt seems to target certain players too, rather than cast a wide net like Saban and Meyer. As for that certain Saturday in November, if You are going to be in Athens let Me know. I will be glad to buy You a drink. Hopefully both teams will have won Their Divisions and will be on Their way to the Conference Championships.
