Tough weekend for Jackets

The baseball team got swept by Florida State. The men’s basketball season came to an end in Charlotte. And the rival from Athens cut down the nets at Alexander Memorial Coliseum after winning the SEC tournament on Georgia Tech’s home court.

Which was toughest to take for Tech fans?

By the way, I thought Tech showed a lot of class by bailing out the SEC and offering Alexander Memorial Coliseum as a backup to the wind-damaged Georgia Dome. Spotted at one of Georgia’s games on Saturday: Tech guard Matt Causey, watching dispassionately. I asked him what he thought, expecting some sort of reaction to the strangeness of Georgia playing on Tech’s court. I should have known better. His analysis: “Great game.”

There should be good news for Tech tonight with the women’s basketball team receiving an NCAA tournament invitation for the second consecutive season, a first in school history.

It was all pretty miserable. I don’t know if I can pick which one was the worst, but I can add one to the list. The ACC only got 4 bids despite having the # 1 Conference RPI.

Just a miserable weekend all around.

Hands and free throws lost Tech a basketball season. Too much racket went on with this Tech team and not enough concentration. I saw three Tech guys around a ball and one Duke man and the Duke man took the ball over and over. Duke is so well coached, they know angles, they know how to block out, they know how to match up for miss matches, they know how to sneak under the base line, they know how to sneak out for a three pointer, their foul shots were in the bank and they know how to wine to get the foul shots. Hewitt recruits better raw talent but can’t make them concentrate. I think Georgia had the same problem then Felton went crazy on the sideline, making every defensive call and hunkering down to the floor to get his teams attention. Being cool doesn’t win basketball games and Georgia got too tire to act cool. Did it on our floor. Maybe it will rub off.

It was a terrible weekend. Tickle Piles on campus were non existent. Even the alumni Pile was not well attended due to the weather I guess.

Is there a bigger indictment of how bad the SEC was in basketball this year than Georgia winning their tournament? The SEC ought to be ashamed of itself.

“Dissed” Dennis Felton looked so comfortable and was so obviously successful on the Buzz Court over the weekend, maybe UGA will consider a straight-up swap for Paul Hewitt??? Can we hope??

I didn’t know we owned a particular sport. Trust me you are not better than us at basketball. You beat us this year but just like you this was a down year for us. We’ll be back in the tourney next year. You had a good four games but it ends this week.

Until this weekend, no Muttlanders even care about basketball. Now they think Tabacco Road extends to Athens.

Yeah lets trade Dennis Felton who won 8 Games in a crappy SEC for a man who went to a National Championship Game when he had a Point Guard stick around.

You Dawg Fans are idiots. Ask the NCAA if they had to pick between Tech and Georgia this year and neither one won there tournament which one would they have picked. And its not you beloved (well since Sunday) Georgia Bulldogs.

For my money, Felton is a better game day coach than Hewitt, while Hewitt is a better recruiter than Felton. A blend of the two would likely be a very successful coach. I would give Hewitt one more season to try and get his program righted (i.e., winning ACC record and NCAA berth), and then try someone else if he can not do it. As for baseball, I think Danny Hall has reached the infamous “plateau” at GT, and he will never rise above that level. If GT wants to achieve more than that, they will need to make a change. Congratulations to the GT women’s basketball team for another successful season and another NCAA Tournament bid. Coach Joseph has earned a raise in pay and a contract extension.

GT should have offered the use of its Basketball facility to the SEC after the tornado. Tech will always have a fondness to the SEC since we were in that league from its inception until the mid-1960’s. We still schedule SEC teams because of this historical relationship. Auburn, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, South Carolina…all make appearances on Tech’s football schedule as a legacy to our past affiliation with that conference. Kuddos to Tech for doing the neighborly deed.

Yes, another sad weekend at the flats. I don’t know how much longer I can read these blogs that seem to be full of Tech fans that argue with fans from stellar programs about how Tech won a championship one year long ago or how our coach with a .600 winning clip ought to be fired and be replaced by the next coach that will win at a .600 winning clip. And last week, I was verbally assaulted because I simply pointed out our chances were slim and none against Duke. Wake up Tech fans, we’re not Texas, Ohio St., nor LSU. We’re little ol’ Georgia Tech that hopes for 8-4 in football and a bubble chance at the NCAAs. Sad, but true.

Regardless of the lack of love between our two schools, Thank you Tech for the hospitality of allowing the SEC to use AMC for their tournament. It was a class act and if the opportunity to reciprocate were to arise, I would hope UGA would show the same class as you did.

The only thing that bothers me is the fact that we didn’t get enough $$ from the GA Dome to fumigate AMC after having the dawgs in it for 2 days.

Yeah, ‘th’, that how-to-win-under-the-most-adverse-of-conditions stench should be removed. Success at the AMC is so flea-ting, but I’m sure it left with the Dawgs. Glad that’s all that bothers you, though, and thanks for the temporary use. We’ll fondly remember our visit as a steppingstone to a most surprising berth at the Dance.

scooter11, were you at AMC?

I’m betting you were…and you not only enjoyed the dogs success but the superior surroundings of the Tech campus…that you love so much…true?

Stingersplash:

Yes, there is a bigger indictment of how bad the SEC was in hoops this year. All the experts only put 6 SEC teams in the big dance.

I’m sure that the ACC probably had twice that many make it in since the ACC was such a superior conference from top to bottom.

Wow Mike, what a great topic. How many years did you spend at UGA journalism school to come up with that one?
