Baseball season almost here
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s a bit later than usual because of a new NCAA rule, but a week from today Danny Hall’s Yellow Jackets open their season. I went to baseball practice today and spoke with Hall and a few of the players. There’s a lot of optimism out there. Here are some of the reasons.
Friday and Saturday starters David Duncan and Eddie Burns are back, and Burns’ 2005 and 2006 shoulder surgery and rehab are now in the distant past.
Charlie Blackmon has been hitting lights-out. You are excused if you don’t know who he is; he was a pitcher last season and appeared in one game. He’s an outfielder now and might bat third.
Freshman Derek Dietrich has impressed his teammates at shortstop after sitting out the fall because of an injury.
There’s a freshman with the first name of Deck and another with the first name of Chase. You can’t beat that. It’s Deck McGuire, a pitcher from Richmond, and Chase Burnette, an outfielder from Buford.
Luke Murton is not only hitting but hitting to the opposite field.
I’ve lived in Georgia for six years now and found two things I can rely on from Georgia Tech sports: The football team always goes to a bowl game, and the baseball team always plays well. It might be tough for the football team to keep its streak going, but the baseball team looks good again (although it still might not finish in the top half of a strong-again ACC).

Mike, I have supreme confidence in Paul Johnson’s football acumen. We are not just going to go to a bowl game, we a going to go to a big bowl game. Just watch and see.
I have more confidence in the football situation now that Gailey is gone.
As for baseball, I would hope Danny Hall has sound pitchers during the weekday games too.

I’ve lived in Georgia all my life and there are two things on witch you can depend. The Tickle Piles at Tech are unsurpassed and in the end our baseball team lets us down each spring!!

Your inability to spell a simple word like “which” is a priceless example of the difference between the fanbase of UGA and that of Tech. Thanks for reminding all of us Yellowblood. Also, your weak attempt at disguise with the name shows a lack of imagination to go along with your ignorance.

I have a sneaking suspicion that “yellowblood” is a 15 year old boy with no girlfriend sitting in his parents’ basement. Nobody can post on this many blogs unless they have no life.
Seriously, dude. Try some p0rn instead. You’ll be much happier.

A slightly different take here, perhaps….
With all the steroid issues (very embarrassing) going on in MLB, I am more and more interested in College Baseball due to some semblance of purity in competition.
Like many of the other so-called “non-revenue” sports in college athletics, if you like the purity of sport and good clean competition, you’ve got a great value for your entertainment dollar …what $5 per ticket?…to watch some talented athletes not yet tainted by the big-money “win at all costs” and “look the other way” when cheating occurs MLB.
It is an interesting commentary on what we may think of fairness that despite the controversy in MLB, the revenues of the sport continue to grow. Perhaps it is rooted in the desire of the public to be entertained…and forget the “real world”…unfortunately, the real world seems to seep into the sport.
I look forward to several trips down to Russ Chandler this year to see the Jackets. No doubt I’ll be there more frequently than Turner Field…if I make it there at all.
GO JACKETS!!!!

After watching the basketball team sleepwalk through its season, it will be nice to see Danny Hall and his team take the field and give the Tech fan some optomism! I look forward to seeing them soon, back here in Jax for the ACC Tournament in May.

dgbbgt Sunday starter is going to be Zach Von Tersch. He threw only 15 1/3 innings as a freshman but then did so well over the summer Baseball America rated him the No. 3 prospect in the Northwoods League.

Good blog was wandering about baseball season and how it was looking. As for football, I think we’re going to be surprised at what some basic option football will do for this team. We have to remember eventhough moments of briliance particularly with passing we have not been able to move the chains, keep the ball and put points on the board consistently in several years. Having a somewhat mobile QB, and some option capability and hopefully still be able to pass the ball, even better, should move this offense from the bottom quartet in college to maybe the second quartet. That along with a defense that is no worse than the second quartet (25-50 ranking) should provide a lot of excitement on the flats for starters.

Yellowblood was already outed, not as a UGayer, but as a still bitter failed GT baseball prospect who wound up playing Division 3 at Emory.

Come off the pie in the sky back slapping. No one knows what Johnson will have for a football team. Very few players that fit his scheme and from what I can tell a mediocre recruiting class at best. There is a possibility of continuing the second tier bowl run due to the weak schedule and the overall down turn of ACC footabll over the last couple of years. As for baseball the one thing that can be counted on is a decent team and occasionally a national power but never able to get over the hump and win the CWS. For crying out loud even UGA has a national championship in baseball and we’re still waiting, and waiting.
