Spring game? Perhaps. Spring concert? Not in ‘08

Georgia Tech has backed off plans for a big event on the eve of the spring game and is looking at doing something smaller scale on the day of the game April 19.

There are two reasons. Tech was running out of time to plan something, and, more importantly, the spring game might not end up being a spring game.

With 58 scholarship players and the inevitable injuries you can expect in a spring, fielding two complete teams to go head-to-head could be a problem. 58 players - 44 offensive and defensive starters = a 14-player cushion, and when you break it down position by position there’s a high likelihood there will be somewhere (say, center, for instance) where there aren’t enough bodies to have a full-fledged game.

Practice gets started March 24, with Tech likely to work Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday on most of the four weeks.

With all the changes taking place, the Yellow Jackets shouldn’t need much in the way of ancillary events to drum up interest in the spring game/scrimmage. There will be a lot of new things to see.

First!!

Let’s see what that backfield of Dwyer, Nesbitt, & Roddy Jones will look like under PJ. The key, I think, for PJ is to turn his Navy offense into something similar to what WVa or Missouri runs. Otherwise, I fear that opponents will simply key on the run.

Go Jackets.

Even better to keep the anything from leaking out. The more secretive the more effective we will be in the first two games with a new coach. We will have them practicing for several possibilities.

I’ll be glad when the season starts and all the bedwetters can quit fretting about if Paul Johnson can win with his offense. He will win big with it. Bring on the season!

I agree with GT. Wait to get everyone in during the Fall and start from there. Until then, show the players what is expected.

I agree with Eagle Jacket, PJ will win alot of big games. I attended GSU during the late 90’s and they won big games by alot of points. I almost joined the Navy just to follow him like a DeadHead. The man is a winner! I’m glad Tech got him and I can’t wait to beat the UGA’s and the VaTech’s by running it down there throats. See y’all in September!

CPJ has already stated his offense will be more like WVA and Oregon. I can’t wait til we kick some butt!!! Looks like spring practice will be more of installation of the system. Once, the kids get here in the fall the real work will began. Have you guys seen the new uniforms. They look great. New uni’s to go along with the new attitude. Check it out at www.meetthemachine.com then go to the news tab.

GT4Ever, when did Paul Johnson ever say his offense will be more like WVA or Oregon. He’s said they will be running the same/similar system as in the past from under center. I don’t think PJ’s ever said he’d be running the spread-option like those schools. It’s just what some Tech fans are hoping for, instead of the triple-option that Tech will be running under PJ. I’m hoping the same, but it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen.

T-Bone,

You think opponents will key in on the run? So what? Do you think for one second that the opponents of Navy were worried about them passing? And yet Navy, by some miracle I guess, were able to lead the nation in rushing 4 out of the last 5 seasons. Sometimes I wonder if people even think about what it is they type on blogs before they hit “post”. GT will be even more successful at this offense because they have better athletes than the Navy (all due respect because of recruiting difficulties, committing to military service and all) and because of those better athletes, opponents will have to keep more of an eye out for the pass than the opponents of Navy did. That in turn will make GT be able to run all over the ACC.

Another thing that burns me is a lot of people talk about GT, Paul Johnson and the new offensive scheme and how it will take a couple seasons for the roster to be revamped and for the players to get the system down. Why is this the widely held view? In case you haven’t noticed the new recruiting class that was brought in, was teeming with players who already know how to play this offensive scheme. So not only does PJ have the roster ready, he has players who can step in on day one of practice and run it. Now I’m sure some of you will argue that PJ isn’t about to put guys like Jaybo Shaw, Tevin Washington ahead of Josh Nesbitt on the depth chart, or Quetin Sims ahead of Greg Smith/Demarius Thomas/James Johnson, or put Richard Watson ahead of Jon Dwyer, or put Peebles/Wright ahead of Roddy Jones/Jamaal Evans. But because all these kids know the system they will push these incumbants to know their sh*t and work hard, or else they might see their playing time lost to true freshmen. And the offensive line is strong already and these are smart kids who I believe will respond to the coaching well, but will be augmented by these highly touted recruits like Uzzi/McRae. Now I do believe some of these kids will see the field because they have skills (most likely Marcus Wright at slotback, cause he can take it to the house on any play).

But this notion that next season is somehow going to be a wash and that expectations are tempered is ludicrous in my opinion. I think the ACC and the nation are going to be surprised by GT THIS season, not two years from now. Think about it. Teams in the ACC hardly ever see a triple option team. That’s a difficult offense to defend especially when you see it once a year and this year will be the first time GT’s opponents have likely ever played a triple option at the college level. And add to that the tweaks that PJ will add to the offense that are specific to GT and you have a lot of mystery. GT’s opponents will only be able to view tape of Navy in preparation for their game (at least until the first few games for 2008 end up on tape). Also consider this. PJ went 2-10 in his first season at Navy, but that was with an existing roster that had just finished 0-10 the year before, and with the added difficulties of recruiting at Navy, I’m sure PJ had more trouble recruiting his first offseason for an 0-10 team than he had recruiting for a 7-5 GT team that plays in a BCS conference and has a storied history of college football. So I don’t know if GT will make a huge improvement on 7-5, but any idea that they will take a step back is ridiculous in my mind.

Oh and the defense should be just as good as it was under Tenuta, and I would argue even better because we might get some emphasis on coverage for a change and maybe a gameday play caller who might dial back the blitzes when they are so obviously not working.

Yeah,..keep telling yourselves that, nerds! If Tech recruited as well as you believe, then where are they on Rivals.com and Scout.com? Could it be that the Jerkits got all “hand-me-down” recruits? I remember not too long ago, you were praising all this crap about Chan! So, PJ will take you back to (slightly above) medicrity. At best, you win half your games, and it definitely won’t be Va Tech and UGA!

Hokey-Pokey:

It’s called recruiting for your needs. Every year UGA gets this great recruiting class, but they always manage to lose to TN, Vandy, SC or some other SEC school.

When Richt actually wins an NC with his prize recruits, then you can talk.

By the way, how many of his recruits this year will end up at JC because they are not academically eligible?

Strange how you have to win it all for a Coach to be respected. This is crazy talk. When a playoff is instituted, the cream will rise to the top. TOO much luck is involved in playing for the MNC. When a ZERO loss AU team is left out and a 2 loss LSU team is in, the system needs revamping.

That said, GT is in for at least 2 LONG seasons. Book it.

Regarding academically ineligible players, didn’t GT just get off of probation for actually PLAYING FLUNKEES? So let’s keep going with this line of thinking, how long will it be between wins for GT over UGA when they are not playing FLUNKEES?

It’s been since 1990 at this point. You guys make this too easy.

Richt’s recruits have gotten him the best record in the SEC since he has been at UGA. Those same recruits are 7-0 vs GT and have 2 SEC titles and 3 BCS bowl appearances. In addition, they are 5-2 in bowl games. And yes, we do lose games from time-to-time. It is called playing in the best conference in football.

I agree with Ramblin Wrecker. The notion that GT is going to take at least 2 years to get where it needs to be to run CPJ’s offense is severely misguided. And then the idea that GT won’t be able to recruit any good players anyways is also misguided. Honestly, it’s extremely hard to envision a scenario where GT can’t at least be 7-5 this year. Remember, last year we had an experienced team returning, players who knew the system, and maybe the most talented team of the gailey era. What happens? Poor execution and game planning. Before the season, I think it was reasonable to expect something along the lines of 9-3 as the team’s record. Yet it was classic GT, lose game you shouldn’t, not show up for other games, etc. With CPJ, I think those sorts of games won’t happen. This year, I see 6, 7, even 8 tough games on the schedule. But imagine if the team goes .500 in those games. That puts them at 8-4, better than a typical Chan team. While there may be a dip in talent in the immediate future, game prep and execution will be much better, especially as the team gets more experience running the triple option. If the ACC is as balanced as most people think, then GT should be able to split their toughest games(it makes sense statistically). Let’s even assume GT will lose to Miss St. and Uga (sic) because the SEC is sooo mighty. That still puts GT at 7-5, the same record they had this year. What a big step back……

the spring game can be skipped, and other that giving coachs a chance to see the new starters in a real game situation,it’s no big loss.the real issue here, imo,is a serious lack of quality depth.where will the scout teams and special teams come from?freshmen can contribute in the fall, but putting in a new system without enough players for serious work in spring practice will be very difficult.high school players need time to adjust to the speed of the game,i don’t think a couple of weeks of fall practice will have these guys ready.tbone, you guys should temper your expectations just to be fair to your new coach.if he wins seven games it will be a pleasant suprise,if he goes 5-7 people won’t be yelling for his scalp.

Ramblin Wrecker- Are you talking about football? You can’t be! Tech (joke by Coke) is 0-7 versus Georgia! The last time tech beat UGA, I was in high school- they don’t remember how to beat UGA!!! The dawgs are about to have the best line-up they’ve had in a decade,..while tech completely changes offense style, loses a head coach and D-coordinator, along with a starting QB and several “prize” recruits. Come on, now! Other than hoping that it happens, what other info do you have to back this bold statement?!

Why are some of you fascinated with the pass and worried about running the ball? As a long-time Navy fan, I watched PJ jam the run down the throats of teams, using it to set up key passes that broke the defense’s back. If Navy can do it with the limited talent we can attract, GA TECH should be able to run all over people.

Also, you guys will have a defense. My team gets beat because we don’t always have the atheletes on defense to match up with our BCS conference opponents. GA TECH will be able to do better. Good luck and enjoy it!

Since noone else in the ACC or SEC,runs an offense like Tech will, who can stop us!!! You might have to give PJ a year to get alll his true playas in but when the does—- WATCHH OUTTTTT!
