Tough schedule, huge challenge

If I told you Georgia Tech would play seven home games and two Division I-AA teams, your first reaction might be to think the schedule was pretty easy. It isn’t.

Forget for a moment the games against I-AA’s Jacksonville State and Gardner-Webb (combined 2007 record 11-11). Realize instead that the rest of the schedule is so tough the Jackets could very well lose its first three I-A games — at defending Atlantic Division champion Boston College, at defending Coastal Division champion Virginia Tech and at home against Liberty Bowl champion Mississippi State.

That’s a mighty tough threesome for a team installing a totally new offense and a somewhat new defense.

And four of Tech’s five road games are against 2007-08 bowl teams. (North Carolina, the lone exception, is going to be much improved this fall.)

The good news: 1) The Miami game on a Thursday night gives Tech a little extra time to get ready for Georgia. 2) The opener on Thursday night gives Tech a little extra time to get ready for the season. The Jackets still get the same 29 practices before the season opener, but they’ll squeeze in at least one additional practice between the opener and the BC game. 3) Tech gets more time to prepare for Miami than Miami gets to prepare for Tech. The Jackets have an open date the week before; the Hurricanes have another Thursday night game.

Aug. 28 Jacksonville State (Thu.) Sept. 6 at Boston College Sept. 13 at Virginia Tech Sept. 20 Mississippi State Oct. 4 Duke Oct. 11 Gardner-Webb Oct. 18 at Clemson Oct. 25 Virginia Nov. 1 Florida State Nov. 8 at North Carolina Nov. 20 Miami (Thu.) Nov. 29 at Georgia

“Bowl” streak in jeopardy. With two I-AA games, it means 7 wins is required. Doubtful.

No pressure first year it is the second and on that will be the test. I wouldn’t want to play Tech first with a new coach. It goes from Mr. Perdictable Chan to a offense they won’t see but once that year.

In the words of the Fabulous Freebirds, “I never met a horse, which can’t be rode, and I never met a man who can’t be throwed.”

I think the schedule sets up pretty well.

Go Jackets!!!

I’m convinced that we schedule non-conference opponents solely on the fact that their mascot is the bulldog. Either that, or uga needs to seriously come up with a more creative mascot.

Last year: Samford, uga (and Fresno St. in the smurf bowl) This year: Miss. St., Gardner-Webb, uga ‘09: Miss. St., uga ‘10: SC St., uga

Needless to say it will be interesting. All the more reason to show up … en masse (hello Tech fans…) and see it unfold.

Take’em one at a time.

Assume nothing. Overlook NO ONE. Concede to NO ONE.

Too many variables to predict…but I am preparing to be pleasantly surprised….

GO JACKETS!

Yeah the schedule does look like a tough start… but only because we play VT 3rd. I’m not sure if I should be concerned that much about BC. They are not know for their defensive play and Matt Ryan did graduate (lets face it, BC was an average team without Ryan). VT on the other hand is a concern, especially because it is early in the season when are offense may not be clicking yet and VT is known for its defense. I don’t know much about Miss state so I can’t really comment. I’m mostly concerned with facing tough defenses early in the season since we maybe mistake and turnover prone.

If VT improves from last year and FSU and Miami live up to there heritage, this is on of the toughest schudules in the nation when you throw in the flea bags too, and M.S. ain’t no push over. I do think that BC will be a drop off from last year, not a bad team, but losing matt ryan they will drop off. Miami has got to get better with all the talent they got.

I think it’s a plus that GT is playing BC and VT first. Remember how it took almost half a season for VT to get it together? I would rather play them sooner than later because we could catch them off-guard. Not to mention that GT usually starts strong. The real test will be the middle of the season. Then we’ll know if this team is the real deal.

playing at BC is going to be a joke. They lost 6 on offense and I think 7 on D including their start QB. And this is when folks realize how much Tom O’Brien meant to this team’s success. They will be average at best and Tech will sneak out of Boston with a win. Now, VT is another story. But w/ PJ calling the plays now, who knows?? Tough or not, I’m excited period!!!!

i would rather play a tough team early in the season - they aren’t as prepared and usually looking down the road.

couple this with a new offense, and vt and bc are at a disadvantage. i am sure they would rather see us play four or five game before facing us to understand our offense. they are coming in blind which should help us.

go tech - beat uconn!

I am just sad we had to settle for two I-AA teams. Why oh why couldn’t we have found a lower tier I-A team to add instead…there sure are a bunch of ‘em out there!

What I like about Johnson is most coaches that coached in a lower division and had success think that now that they are in the big times with greater talent they can junk the offense that got them there. Johnson just keeps making his offense better and not trying to put in the newest gadgets to impress the world he is hip. The only reason some of the pro teams don’t put more running offense into their game is they can’t afford the players that get hurt. What has made Georgia a much better and consistent team is great running backs, they have always had receivers. More and more the tight end and quick slot backs that are not recruited heavily in college are becoming the real game breakers. Defenses are laying back to cover even average receivers in college because unlike 10 years ago even 1AA schools are recruiting speed. This offense has circled back and will be very much in style at Tech.

I think it is mainly going to depend on DEFENSE and OFFENSIVE EXECUTION. If the new DC can hold the opposition to a reasonably low number of points and, if CPJ can get the new Tech Spread Offense going reasonably well (minimizing turnovers will a key with the installation of the new offense), then I think we will be OK. We might suprise a few teams.

GO JACKETS!!

By not a coach, but...

A 1-3 start sounds about right. I’m really interested in finding out at what point in the season crybaby Tech fans start throwing things on the field. Then again, when they start out 1-3 there probably won’t be too many of them at the games anyway. The stadium will be half full at best. Enjoy those extra couple of days to prepare for Georgia. You’ll need them. Georgia will have two weeks to prepare. We’ll make it #8.

To Mr. Muttland=JOKE, I think you need to worry about your own problems, which you have many. I mean, like it’s the off-season when Muttland football players have a tendency to show their true selves.

So if you are worried about us right now, your NC, which you weren’t going to win anyway, goes by the wayside.

tech fans must be patient this year. GT will most likely be underdogs in at least 6 - 7 games this year. 1st year QB - average running and passing game. Should have a very good defense. 500 season would be a good year. don’t expect to much! recruiting is off to a ggod start with the lanier. must recruit better to compete with the better teams in the ACC and SEC. Sorry, truth hurts!

“I think you need to worry about your own problems, which you have many.”

17 starters back from an 11-2 team. I’m just all torn about about our “problems”. I wish we had went 7-6, got curbstomped by a mediocre mid major in our bowl game, and fired our coach. Oh, and let us not forget recruiting battles with the likes of Duke, Middle Tennessee State, Furman, Tulsa, and Memphis. I’m just so jealous of Georgia Tech.

The mind of a Georgia Tech fan. Its one of the great mysteries of the universe.

P.S. While you were dishing out your usual Georgia Tech crybaby garbage, Fresno State just scored again.

I can’t wait to see Paul Johnson’s offense in action. I went to nearly all the home games he coached at Georgia Southern. It’s exciting stuff when your team scores 45 points or more. I saw plenty of big plays (run and pass). And with better talent on the defensive side of the ball than anywhere he’s coached, we will see some huge blow-outs over the next several years. His offense has worked everywhere thus far and it will be awesome at Tech too.

Anyhow know if Nesbitt is going to be a penciled starter for running this new system? He is a true athlete w/ a cannon for an arm. Don’t be surprised if he is a heisman candidate by his senior year. Seriously…….. Heisman winners are all about individual stats and the new QB in this system will have plent to build upon. Nesbitt was a top 5 QB recruit so I really think this is a true possibility and not just a pipe dream (like winning the national championship as a Ga Dawg). Your beloved SEC cowharts will ensure you don’t make it AGAIN this year.

To Mr. Muttland=Joke,

Unlike you, I don’t need to live out my hopes, wishes, and dreams through a cotton-picking college football team. Your love for Muttland has become your identity. Thus, you are not in control of your faclulties, Mark Richt is. And that is the only reason you are on this blog.

So tell me this, Mr. Muttland=Joke, if Muttland does win the NC in 2008, how much will your life actually change? And if you say you will still be better than Tech, then I really feel sorry for you.

Get a life, Myopian Hush Puppy!!!

Where’s the new blog? I’ve got some venting to do about the basketball game Saturday. And a basketball focused blog will eliminate the intrusions from the Woofers since BBall is not important to them.

A synopsis of my vent - Zach Peacock is killing us. But is it the player or the coach’s fault?

Anyone concerned about losing Choice next year? Go to rivals.com video on Marcus Wright, the 5’ 6” cannonball running back. He’s a pleasure to watch.

Put the next 3 lines together for the link to his video page.
