Luck of Irish: They get Tenuta

It’s interesting that Jon Tenuta is headed to Notre Dame. Being an assistant coach there is like being a coordinator at a lot of other places, prestige-wise. And being a Notre Dame assistant should be a good steppingstone to a head coaching job, assuming that Charlie Weis and his staff can turn things around in South Bend.

Weis saw Tenuta’s work firsthand in the 2007 season opener, when the Yellow Jackets routed the Irish 33-3. It’s a shame that Tech and Notre Dame don’t play this season or next; it would be a lot of fun to watch Paul Johnson coach against a defense with Tenuta on the staff.

I will be curious to see how much of an impact Tenuta has on what Notre Dame does defensively. Does he just coach his position and have little effect on the Irish’s style of play, or do his concepts start showing up on the field?

Do we know what kind of assistant? Is he simply a position coach?

Personally, I was not all that impressed with Tenuta. When we needed the defense to make a stand, they often couldn’t: against WVA in the Gator Bowl, against UGA too many times, against Fresno State, …

A lot of things in life can be both a blessing and a curse simultaneously. Case in point: Tenuta’s defensive scheme. Just like basketball, where if you live by the jump shot, you die by the jump shot, such is the case with the blitz. If you live by the blitz, you die by the blitz.

I saw way too many teams take advantage of our blitzing schemes this year. We gave up way too many big plays because our folks were out of position.

I think there were times we should have depended on our D-line to get to the quarterback without putting our D-backs into man coverage.

Thanks for he memories and we appreciate all you did for the Jackets.

But it’s time to move on.

Notre Dame confirmed the hire late Thursday, announcing that Tenuta would take over as Assistant Head Coach on Defense, replacing defensive backs coach Bill Lewis, who will join the University’s athletics community relations staff.

Tenuta will start his new job on Feb. 18.

Hold on a minute. Tenuta, like Paul Johnson or Mike Leach, knew he wasn’t privy to the best talent in the NCAA. So, he developed a scheme that helped them play above their capabilities. As for his defenses choking, ‘tis true, that’s part of the blitzing scheme. But it’s also part of playing on the other side of the worst offensive coordinator, Chan Gailey, in college football. I can’t think of many times in Gailey’s history that he figured out how to score at the end of a game while using up the clock.

I’ll not enter into the opinion game, but only to say that John Tenuta was one of favorite coaches, and still is. I wish him all the luck in the world. Remember he didn’t cut and run, he was forced to leave.

T-Bone, you are so right. I don’t know how many times in the last few years Tenuta’s D couldn’t get a stop in the last 5 minutes or so of a game. In the last 2 years we lost 11 games and if you eliminate the 06 Clemson game and 07 VPI game we had a chance to win the others with 5 minutes to go. In everyone of those games we either 1) never got the ball back or 2) got the ball too late b/c the defense couldn’t get off the field. Add to the fact that too many times over the last 6 years the defense just didn’t look like they showed up to play. Again a direct reflection on Tenuta.

Tenuta wasn’t at all forced to leave. Coach Paul Johnson offered him the job, but Tenuta decided to decline and look elsewhere. Don’t make it look like he was a saint in all that he did at Tech.

This is a good career move for Tenuta I would think with ND and Weiss. Tenuta has done well wherever he’s been. With a better offense keeping the ball and moving the chains I believe his defenses would have been better rested and even better rankingwise. At the same time, I’m surprised he did’nt get a coordinator’s job but it may have been better to stay on the ND staff.

February 1, 2008 8:39 AM | Link to this

Hey Navigator, I think you’ve got the Tenuta “forced to leave” thing wrong. If memory serves me correctly, PJ did admit after the fact that JT was asked to stay on as DC. I along with most Tech fans appreciate what JT for the program, especially being handicapped with Chan Gailey as your HC and OC. Anyone that knows anything about football knows that the success of one particular unit is effected by the play of the other. Under the circumstances, JT did a great job. But what bothers me is that after him saying that he liked being at Tech and having the opportunity to stay, he ends-up being an assistant at ND instead of the DC at GT. Go figure. Yeah, I know it’s ND but still… he should have given PJ a chance. What a shame.

By Buzz Belle

February 1, 2008 9:03 AM | Link to this

As I recall, PJ stated in an interview he walked into the room with Tenuta, and before an offer was even made, Tenuta informed Johnson he had another direction he wanted to take his career. I’m not sure an offer was made, and I think Tenuta put to rest any offer before it hit. The rest of this is only my opinion, I feel Tenuta wanted the head coach job and was very disappointed to not be offered the job after Gailey was cut. I like Tenuta and wish him well but it was time to make the change.

Tenuta was terrific at Tech and was very patient during the coaching change. He also stayed in the media shadows. With ND’s #1 recruiting class he will have strong talent to work with. Unfortunately, fans were more interested in watching Tenuta’s defense than Gailey’s offense for the past 5 years.

By Ramblin Wrecker

February 1, 2008 10:17 AM | Link to this

I’m a bit confused by this move. Tenuta goes from being one of the better defensive coordinators (who always did more with less talent), to a prospective Head Coach choice, to potential DC at LSU or Michigan, to an assistant head coach on defense or essentially a position coach? That just seems like Tenuta’s stock just fell thru the floor. I guess his coaching isn’t very highly sought after as most people would have thought. There were lots of DC positions open lately, including Auburn and South Carolina (twice) just to name two. He couldn’t even get a sniff? Wow. And he ends up, from what I can tell, coaching the position (DB’s) that was the weakest of all on his defenses at GT. Oh well. Good luck to him, I think he made a mistake not staying on as DC of GT. But I think GT will benefit from having a new set of eyes coaching the defense and calling the schemes. Maybe they will learn to adjust to some zone coverage when/if the zone blitz isn’t reaching the QB.

By Buzz Belle

Clarification - It was time to make the change with Tenuta since Johnson got the head coaching job. I’m not sure what kind of head coach Tenuta will make if he makes it to that next tier but I’m real glad we don’t play ND soon. Now that my curiosity has been satisfied knowing where Tenuta is, looking forward to a great future wtih Johnson! GO JACKETS AND THWG

T-Bone you are crazy about making a stand. When the defense spent the whole day on the field, because the offense keeps going 4 & out, anyone would get tired. TENUDA’s D beat UGA pretty good we just left 21 points on the field in turnovers and dropped Touchdowns.

Those who want to bang on Tenuta need to have their memories refreshed. 13-3 vs. Clemson in ‘07. 17-3 vs. Auburn in ‘03, 7-3 vs. Maryland in ‘03. D giving up only 8 points to UGA in ‘07 and 14 in ‘06. Holding ND and Weiss/Quinn to 14 (really 7 if you take away the “gift” from the zebras) in ‘06.

All this and always knowing the offense could ALMOST NEVER be counted on to step up big in big games.

Tenuta was/is and OUTSTANDING defensive coach.

Tenuta is a foul mouthed Atheist and even thought he is a great coach, I am glad he is not coaching at Tech any more. I don’t know why a Christian school such as ND would even hire him. He would not even let the Tech players pray at their Bowl Game.

Seems odd that he would leave GT to pursue NFL, etc. like he said only to take an asst job at ND. That is a definite demotion. He could have stayed at GT but I think his feelings were hurt and he pouted and acted irrationally and decided to leave. At any rate, he was good but not as super great as many wrote him up to be. Open game, rumors are Gardner-Webb.

CJT did not get any sniffs for a head coaching position this year. He got stiffed by DRAD for the Tech Head spot.

I think he landed in a great place. He is Assistant Head Coach for Defense. Who cares what it means? If ND defense improves, and it will because it really sucked last year. Tenuta will get the credit.

His chances of getting a head coaching spot is much better after putting ND on the resume.

I look forward to seeing what he can do at ND, he posted the best defensive rankings that Tech has seen in years.

Johnson never said that Tenuta was his choice, he asked Tenuta if he would interview for the DC or other jobs. Under those circumstances, I don’t think I would have either. He was going to get a job at a top university, so why get on your knees to Johnson. If Johnson wanted him, he would have called Tenuta in the office and asked him to stay as the DC, and I believe he would have stayed. In the real world, who cares, he’s gone try not to heap too much the Gailey’s bad coaching on the results of the game. The defense constantly played more than have the minutes, and that was biggest single reason the players had nothing left at the end.

What do you mean “try not to heap too much” on Gailey’s bad coaching on the results of the game? Are you kidding. The reason we’ve lost seven straight to UGAHH, 2-5 in the last seven bowl appearances, and had to make a coaching change is because Gailey was Mr. Mediocrity personified and taking Tech football down the path of no return. Get real. And as for Tenuta, he didn’t have to grovel to Johnson. He left because he didn’t get Johnson’s job and let his pride get in the way of thinking his reputation was greater than it was. That’s not the quite the same as being “forced to leave”, is it?. To reiterate, Tenuta was a good coach that did a great job. His D won far more games for Tech than Gailey’s offense ever thought of doing. Tech is entering a new era and if JT was going to stick around and not be happy then he wasn’t gong to do Tech or himself any good. - GO JACKETS!!

Enough. Tenuta was a good defensive coach for us at Tech. Few blame him for not staying in a position where he had been passed over for promotion. He has chosen a new job. Let’s just congratulate himm and get on with our own new coach, team, era. Coach Gailey, despite the empty insults thrown about in forums like this, had integrity and class, but did not produce the wins. Both coaches are gone, and we have a great coach in Johnson, who can hopefully maintain our integrity while also bringing the wins. Let’s focus on our team and our own “bidness”, because we really are going to need a lot of support in the next year or two. We have not had a difficult coaching transition in quite a long time…we’d better get used to the possibility. We don’t have enough energy and fan base to waste time “hatin’” on bygone coaches. Let’s go, Jackets.

Tenuta detractors seem to forget that his defenses were on the field ALL DAY.

He was a great DC, and his numbers would have been all-world if Tech’s offense had not been sub-par for several years.

I like Chan Gailey, but even I have to admit that our QB development was horrible during his tenure, and our O showed it. Tenuta’s D was THE reason we had winning seasons the past several years. Good luck to him….he sure did a great job at Tech.

Yes, we would really hate for a discussion of Georgia Tech Sports to break out on the AJ-C with all the Tech posters using handles of UGA coaches and players in every blog.

Here we have a discussion of the facts that Georgia Tech has 1 National Championship in girls tennis (to UGA’s 2 in girls tennis) and not 1 other National Championship in any of the 21 sports Georgia Tech fields teams in, ever. Compared directly thereto the 24 National Championships Georgia owns including NC such as Baseball College World Series, Men’s Golf we have several of, Women’s Golf UGA has several NC in, Women’s Gymnastics we have 8 NC in, Women’s Swimming and Diving UGA has 4 more NC in, and Men’s Tennis UGA has 5 more National Championships in.

And, then there is the small problem for Tech fans logging into every AJ-C blog as UGA player names and as UGA Coach names (and NEVER has a login such as something that resembles Georgia Tech - because you are ashamed of all this), where you have to admit that Georgia Tech has NEVER BEEN RANKED NO. 1 IN THE FINAL AP POLL, EVER IN FOOTBALL. Never, not once. And, of course, Georgia has been No. 1 in the Final AP Polls.

Yeah, ignore me and maybe I will go away, so you can log into every AJ-C blog with UGA Bulldog handle names, and say how much better Georgia Tech is than Georgia.

Okalahoma was one probation the whole year, not eligible for bowl game (Barry Switzer era), and still ranks #1. Washington finishes year 11-1 beat 6 top twenty teams, and AP gives Brigham Young #1, even though they never beat a ranked team but were undefeated. Georgia Bulldogs have beaten LSU both of the last two times we played LSU, including the SEC Championship 2005, and UGA has Won 5 of the last 7 games between UGA and LSU.

The poster, therefore, was correct.

Typical uniformed and misinformed Tech fan that it is NOT a reason for Tenuta to get the Hell out of Atlanta. Let’s see Tenuta beat The Bulldogs how many times ? Zero -0- nada.

Georgia Tech is 2-27 vs. UGA in Women’s Basketball for the Tech fans reading the AJ-C and surmising that Tech is great and UGA is NOT. Brag about that ? Not Tech. In fact, after Andy Landers beat MaChelle Joseph again this season, Andy extended his hand for the customary handshake, and MaChelle Joseph simply walked right past Andy Landers.

Baseball is the sport I really love, however. Tech fans think Tech is great in Baseball, and that UGA is NOT. Tech has a 146-192-2 record vs. UGA in Baseball. And, UGA has Won the College World Series National Championship (24 UGA NC to Tech 1 in girls tennis.)

You always got the idea with Tenuta that something isn’t right with the guy. He is recluse from the press, which who blames him but only prima donnas seem to pull off not having to go through that body search. Then he kind of stayed on the market a long time for someone who has his reputation and ends up with the fat egotistical bore up north, when rumor had it he was going to the ultra successful LSU. I never think I get the real deal reading the paper and here is a guy that hides away from any kind of press as it was. His defense particularly against Virginia Tech showed no emotion which I always blamed on the Gailey factor, but now wonder if the two together weren’t just worn out parts trying to make a whole. There seems to be a shelve life on these coaches. I think Johnson still likes coming to work, still fresh.
