Clough on football playoff: OK, if …

University of Georgia President Michael Adams’ proposal for an eight-team football playoff got shot down on Monday at the NCAA convention. A lot of college presidents don’t want to go down that road, and the Division I board of directors decided to not even form a discussion group on the subject.

Georgia Tech President Wayne Clough, though, is pretty much in agreement with the president of his sister institution. Both say adding a playoff should mean eliminating the 12th game of the regular season.

Here’s Clough’s take: “I am OK with a well designed playoff, but am opposed to this if we stay with 12 games. Personally I was opposed to the expansion and voted that way when I was on the NCAA Board of Directors, but surprisingly other conferences supported it. And this from a group that continues to threaten to reduce the baseball season. With 12 games and conference playoffs it will be hard to have a playoff and not extend the season well into January. When will it stop? We already have games being played into the second week. Pretty soon we are going to find ourselves with a season paralleling the pros, and this is not good, both for the student athletes and collegiate football. It does not pass the smell test.”

justme,as i posted on another tech blog,we can all agree on one thing.nobody likes adams!don’t you guys want a president that is into football?just don’t let him hire your next bb coach!i think adams saw that 70% of college fans want a playoff and jumped on the bandwagon.he knew there wasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell of it becoming a reality.notice that he didn’t fight very hard for his idea.the big 11 and the pac 10 will not support a playoff, neither will the sec.the bcs bowls and the media are putting too much money into the fatcat’s pockets.also under the present system, the big 11 and the pac 10,two huge money making conferences, can count having a team in the bcscg alomst every year.money talks my friend, and the big money does not want a playoff.

As a Tech fan, I would go along any time that UGA, as often happens, makes damn fools out of themselves. Every year the team that thinks they got “screwed” makes this speech because the fans force them to. I’m sure Adams didn’t push too hard.

fan who loves football, the players play to win.the boosters want to win.the coachs have to win to keep their jobs.the presidents and conferences think winning is nice, but want the money.when they have a choice between the money and a championship, they will take the money every time.xxxx, adams saw where the people were going, then jumped out in front saying”look at me,i am a leader.”i put this in another post, the reason the presidents don’t want a true playoff system is the way the tv money for the bowls is split up in the conferences.south carolina sat at home, but made more money than some teams that went to bowls.presidents know that they will have to qualify to be in a playoff.using the sec for example, how much would the conference get to split up if no sec team makes it to the second round?how much money would the non playoff bowls pay?the way the bcs is set up now the big 10 was able to slip a second tier team into the rose bowl and pick up 8.5 million.plus a lot of tv money for the other teams to split up.in a playoff system they could not do that.the pac 10 knows that it might work the same way for them next year.no way are they getting rid of this cash cow.i keep telling you guys that it’s all about the money, just open your eyes and look!fox payed 320 million just to broadcast the bcs,the money is controlled by the major conferences, with a bone thrown now and then to a boise state or hawaii.the conferences may point fingers at each other, but they are all pigs suckling the same teat.

The reason Clough is for the playoff is now that TECH has fired the sorriest college football coach in history, they actually have a chance to make a playoff. Chan Gailey is gone to Kansas City. THANK GOD ALMIGHTY.

I wonder how long it will take CPJ to enact his vision of Tech being a top-tier team. Any ideas?

Herman Edwards on Chan… “Wherever he’s coached, he has designed dynamic offenses to take full advantage of his players’ skills.”

What world does Herm Edwards live on? Chan had a real dynamic offense at Tech, that over his 6 years consistently ranked lower and lower in every statistically category each year. And man, how he took advantage of the greatest wide receiver to ever play at Tech, maybe the best in the nation, designing a system that sometimes got him the ball twice a game.

That is hilarious!
