Your vote: Where does Choice rank?

Happy day-after-Christmas, Georgia Tech readers. I hope your holiday went as well as mine, which took a turn for the better sometime after 2 a.m. when I found the computer file where I’d typed the comments from Tashard Choice about his place in Yellow Jackets football history.

I’m en route to Boise for the Humanitarian Bowl, and I’m sitting in an airport in Portland, and the Boise flight has been delayed 45 minutes so far, and it will be a while longer. But it’s warm in here, and dry, and there’s a power outlet for my computer, and the cell card connection is good and strong. And, after reading some Fresno Bee coverage of Fresno State, Tech’s opponent, I’m reminded that I’ve got far more to be thankful about than to gripe about.

Here’s a summary of the injuries the Bulldogs have dealt with this season: injuries.

Here’s an even more poignant item: defensive coordinator’s fight with cancer.

OK, back to Tech. The AJC should soon be posting my story about Choice, in which all-time Tech rushing leader Robert Lavette says Choice ranks among his top five Yellow Jackets running backs of all time. Lavette ranks Eddie Lee Ivery first.

What do you think? Where does Tashard fit in with the likes of Dorsey Levens, Jerry Mays, Lenny Snow, Clint Castleberry, Eddie Prokop …?

I’m a relatively young GT fan, 31, so I freely admit that I don’t know much about Eddie Lee Ivery or Robert Lavette. But of all the GT runningbacks that I’ve witnessed, I rate Tashard Choice as the best. I liked PJ Daniels, but after watching Choice these past two seasons after Daniels graduated, I have to say he is much tougher and consistent. In my opinion he’s a pro style RB that will be successful in the NFL with the right team. He’s not necessarily a high draft pick talent, but he’s a work horse and a motivated guy who plays through pain. He’ll be well respected in the NFL. But having said all this, here’s looking forward to Jonathan Dwyer being the best of them all.

Tech has never had a good back, so Choice-an average back, is the best.

Just kidding, I Can’t say where dude ranks in Tech history, but he must have been-accounting for missed time cause of injury- one of the best 5-7/ in all of college ball this year.

I’ve seen all of them except Eddie Prokop. Never heard of him.Ivery could definitely carry the mail. That said, Lavette may have piled up the yards running behind the studs Ivery ran behind.Choice is a tough runner but could never break a long one like the aforementioned or even Pee Wee Mays. I would prefer P.J. to Choice. I would be glad to have any one of them. I don’t think Lenny Snow could play in this league now, however.

I was there during the Pecker Rodgers era. Get ready for many more Eddie Lees. Only Johnson seems less concerned with his “cool” image than Rodgers was.

I would rate Eddie Lee the best.He could run over you or around you.He never went down on first hit.

Best heart and will to win would be Choice who I hope has a great NFL career.

I understand Tech has been to 9 straight bowls…of course if you add up all of them, they don’t equal ONE BCS bowl, even if you factor in a bit extra for the blue rug visits.

Choice is a real class act. First he gives up a scholarship at Oklahoma so he could be close to his mother. He is a constant source of motivation for his team mates and the fans alike. When Tech was in need of a play, on a team that lacked play makers, oftentimes it was Choice that made it. Sore legs and all. All that said, the thing that really impressed me most about Choice is learning today that he earned his degree. God speed “Coach” Choice and when your career in the NFL is over, I hope you come back to Tech as a paid coach so you can continue to lead young people in a positive way that makes your mother, family and fellow Tech alums proud. God speed. God Speed.

As a warrior, TC is right up there with any I have seen, and I did see Eddie Lee. EL was much bigger than TC, but TC has just as big of a heart. His vision and running ability remind me a lot of Emmit Smith. I have no idea if he can turn his ability and desire into a great NFL career, but I am rooting for him.

GT fans have so much to be thankful for as we remember this past year. The Chan era is over and CPJ has arrived with a new attitude and a passion to be great!!

From what I hear Castleberry may have been the best but only played one year in the 1940’s. The one’s I’ve witnessed I would put Eddie Lee Ivory as the top, then Lavette, Then Choice then Joe Burns, Then Lenny Snow, Then Jerry Mays. Then two that should be right up their would be William Bell and Dorsey Levens. The coaching change after Ross hurt those last two and a lack of a good passing game hurt Eddie Lee Ivery and Lavette to some degree. You put those two guys on a Ross or O’leary team and wer’e talking unstoppable offenses because they were complete backs who could make people miss and break tackles, get that extra yardage. Daniels was also excellent and unfortunately we did’nt have the balance to help out. Burns was a good one who did’nt have the size or breakaway speed of Ivery but had some similar characteristics. David Sims and Brent Cunningham were pretty good if memory is right in the early 70’s.

All are average backs at best. There is a freshman that is already half way to having back to back 1,000 yard seasons named Moreno. Of course there was myself that always appreciated playing GT every year because that was always good for at least 200 rushing yards.

All fun aside, I enjoyed watching Choice. He will do well in the NFL. Good luck Tashard!

Choice is a great back and as a leader, clearly #1. Ivery, also a great back, is clearly #1 in talent. Lavette, Mays and Cunningham were great traditional GT “scat-backs.” Bell,Levens, Burns and Daniels were very good power backs. Lenny Snow, before injury, could play anytime for anybody… the best at reading blocks but helped greatly by being paired with great QB Kim King. I’d take Choice, though, if I were starting a college team from scratch.

By reebok

December 27, 2007 8:47 AM | Link to this

Eddie Lee Ivery was a total stud, he could do it all. Lavette was very good, but labored in the shadow of Herchel for three years and then even wound up backing up Walker when they were both with the Dallas Cowboys. Levens was better in the pros than he was in college. Daniels and Choice were both terrific backs for Tech, and the Jackets were incredibly fortunate to go straight from Daniels to Choice. Sorry, but I don’t think Mays ranks with those guys…IMHO.

By Steverino

December 27, 2007 9:47 AM | Link to this

Jerry ‘Scooter’ Mays deserves a mention, just for running thru UGA’s defense like Metamucil. But Eddie Lee Ivery has to be #1, IMO.

Herschel,

That has to be one of the most ridiculous statements I’ve ever heard. “There is a freshman that is already half way to having back to back 1,000 yard seasons named Moreno.” I guess Stafford is “halfway” to winning a Heisman too, right? What kind of logic is that anyway? Moreno had a very good season, in fact he WAS the UGA offense and in my opinion just as responsible for UGA’s turn around as any of Mark Richt’s motivational tatics. But he’s done it one season. UGA has had several freshmen RB’s who made an impact and everybody started the inevitable comparisons to #34 and then they don’t pan out (Lumpkin and Ware come to mind). I like Moreno and his style of running. But he aint halfway to back to back anythings. Next season when he cracks 500 yards rushing, THEN he’ll be halfway to back to back 1000 yard seasons.

Did you not read the entire blog. It was said in good fun. I’m sorry that your team stinks. Don’t take it out on someone that was just having a little fun. And if you think Moreno will only have 500 yards rushing next year I have swamp land to sell you in the Mojave desert.

Ramblin Wrecker: If back-to-back 1000 yard seasons equals TWO 1000 yard seasons, then ONE 1000 yard season would be half of “back-to-back” 1000 yard seasons. Good day sir.

PS- Choice would have been 4th string at UGA this year, before injuries.

By bb

December 27, 2007 11:22 AM | Link to this

Choice is a great back, and who knows what he could have done if healthy all year this year. But Eddie Lee Ivery was the best I have seen at Tech.

It’s interesting to note that the day he ran for 356 against Air Force he had the flu, so he only played about 2/3 of the game. His backup also ran for 100+ yards that day.

As someone else pointed out, Tech didn’t have much of a passing game back then to take the focus off of him (of course the same was true for Choice this year).

By Buzz Belle

December 27, 2007 12:08 PM | Link to this

King of Whatever - What a dumb statement. Choice didn’t want to go to UGA, he wanted to go to Tech. If your coach would have been dumb enough to make him 4th string, that shows the lack of intelligence on your coaching staff. I suppose your coaching staff would have put Clavin Johnson 4th also. Choice was more than a football player, he has class, he has a degree from Tech, and he has the whole Tech nation behind him because of who he is, not just because of what he does. Go Jackets, Go Warriors, & THWG!

Buz Belle: Typical comment by a Techie. The “Whole Tech Nation” you mean all 31 of you? What cracks me up the most is the fact that you Techies always have to root for the team that UGA is playing because your sorry team can’t beat them. After we beat Hawaii, then who will you root for to beat us? Get ready for 8 in a row next year.

Choice is a very good running back; no doubt that he could have played anywhere. Too bad that he selected an institution that can’t really appreciate him AND the team by selling out that High School Stadium of yours every home game. It takes the UGA fan base to fill that pitiful stadium. You guys should have been embarrassed for letting UGA fill over half of your stadium with their fans. Now that is sorry.

Have fun on the blue turf in Boise.

DD - Blah, blah, blah. I root for the team Ga is playing since the dawg fans got so obnoxious. I went to the last Sugar Bowl and rooted for Ga when they played Notre Dame (it’s been a looooong time but I remember)- I chanted “Hail Mary, full of Grace, Noter Dame’s in second place” after the game - right there on Bourbon Street. Something changed from then however and the dawg fans got nasty, mean and unsportsman. Now don’t get mad - it isn’t all dawg fans. But when you go out of Ga. and people (not Tech fans) say the same thing about how dawg fans are so bad, it becomes embarrassing to root for them. So I stick to Tech because I’ve loved them since I was a child, they have class, a rich history and tradition. I’m not saying Ga. doesn’t, I’m saying I like Tech better. We have our obnoxious fans but you have already admitted we can’t have near as many since we only have 31 fans - right? At the end of every football season, all players from every school idle one of our coaches for the coveted Heisman Trophy and life is good. As far as who will beat you? Hmmm, Tebow without being injured, Tenn, possibly SC, how about LSU, and after this year’s game, maybe Troy, they just about had you this time huh?

By DD

December 27, 2007 2:24 PM | Link to this

Buzz Belle: I agree that not all fans are bad, but please don’t say that Tech fans have more class because while attending the UGA/Tech game folks wearing Yellow shirts kept hurling liquor bottles and came very close to hitting my 7 year old son. LOTS OF CLASS Right! Then went on cussing and swearing at my son and he was not even saying anything. Before you start all I did was asked them nicely, to which you can ask my Tech friend sitting with us, to watch what they say around this section because there were children around. Not only mine, but Tech folks as well and they did nothing about it. But because we were wearing Georgia attire they continued on their way. It took away lot of the excitement for my son’s first football game. Please don’t mention class after that experience.

Again typical that you have to use other teams that have beat us recently, but of course you can’t mention TECH as a team that has beat UGA.

Let me first say that Tashard Choice is probably the best back going to the NFL. He’s got the strength and IQ to run in the NFL. However, when you compare any of these players, Ivery has always stood out amongst all of the Tech running backs. He was the closest to Herschel Walker at Tech in one category. He could get short runs for most of the game, but on any play he could score from anywhere on the field. Before you bull puppies get excited, no I’m not saying Ivery was as dominant as Herschel, but Ivery had the speed and moves to break any play. In my estimate Walker and Ivery were the two best running backs to play in the state of Georgia in the last half century.

DD- When I was 7 I went to games at Tech and Georgia. I heard many swear words. So what? Its a FOOTBALL GAME IN THE SOUTH. Its a war. Tech vs Ga is clean old fashion hate. if you can’t handle a few bad words then don’t come to a football game at Tech or Uga, or any of the 15 Sec/Acc stadiums I have seen games at (They even curse at Wallace Wade at Duke). Lets get real, its a rivalry football game and this guy is complaining about cursing. Thats a joke. If you had told me to keep it down I would have kept enjoying myslef at a football game. Anyways, Duece is the man. Tashard, thanks for the great times, and always keeping us entertained with your humor on and off the field. Will make a fine NFL back

ZGOLDATOWN: I’ve been going to game since 1980. Probably longer than yourself. I do hope that you will not have that same experience in Athens. I know that there will always be cussing at games. I’m one of them. It was the flying liquor bottles all of us, including Tech fans, did not care for.

DD - See, I could sit with you and have some good old fashioned rivalry fun. I’m learning the Ha’a dance the Warriors do just to taunt the few Ga. fans in my family. (Good old fashion fun). I hope the Sugar Bowl won’t be the easy win you guys think hoever. I do love football and a close game is always better than a blowout - unless Tech is doing the winning, of course.

It is all good fun. Some do carry it too far and that’s a shame, but it is the way some folks are about their team. I’m not saying it’s right. My wife is a graduate of UF so there is one day it is always interesting.
