Jackets hope to be artificially fast

The best I can figure it (with help from Taylor Bennett), Georgia Tech’s Humanitarian Bowl appearance will be its first game on artificial turf since … Tech’s last Humanitarian Bowl appearance. This will be Fresno State’s fifth artificial-field game this season.

Advantage, Fresno?

Not necessarily. Tech practices at the Georgia Dome on bad-weather days and has an artificial-surface practice area alongside the natural grass one at Rose Bowl Field. So it’s not as if the Yellow Jackets are unfamiliar with an artificial surface.

The rule of thumb is that an artificial surface favors the faster team, because the solid and sure footing accentuates whatever speed advantage exists. Bennett said it’s no big deal.

One thing’s for sure: The surface will be better than the slop the Yellow Jackets played in at the Emerald Bowl two years ago in San Francisco.

I hate artificial turf. I remember the Tickle Piles we had on Grant Field during my days at The Institute. The turf would actually burn exposed skin. One benefit though, no one took off thier clothes and Tickle Piles were much cleaner during those days. Nothing like today.

The tickle pile comments were started within a week after Florida and Tech fans began picking on UGA fans about the Stafford-spooning incident in the photos. Even though we all know Stafford wasn’t spooning the guy in some love thing, it was fun to bring it up to bust their chops. The jokes made due to the content of the photos is real. The tickle pile thing is something one guy always comes on here to write about. He thinks it will catch on or something but has had no luck. He was a UGA fan who got ticked that Florida and Tech picked on his QB and he tried some lame comeback. He knows no one finds it funny because no one else talks about it. That is the funniest thing!

While the tickle pile thing was a joke attempt, the remark about Tech’s old turf burning exposed skin wasn’t.

Before it was resurfaced in the early ’80s they didn’t lock Grant Field, so we used to go throw a Frisbee around in the middle of the night(the surface was in sad shape then, with several seams sealed with duct tape).

One of us got a really nasty friction burn on his foot from sliding on the turf. From then on it was long pants and sleeves. And shoes.

After they put down the new turf started locking up the stadium.

The absolute funniest thing is the fact UGA has to come onto a Tech blog everyday to make themselves feel good. This happens because UGA feels they are the future National Champs every year. They get ticked when the media and coaches show them no love (case in point, look at how your team was jumped in the polls). They know UGA is not a major program, neither is Tech. We understand that. UGA needs to get a clue. UGA gets ticked when Florida beats them 98 times out of the last 100 games they’ve played against each other, so UGA tries to look for someone they have beaten a few times. They get ticked because their team has the best talent every year for the past six years and have nothing to show for it except losses to Vandy, Kentucky, SC, and close wins against Troy and Tech. Not coming close to any NC. Stop being so hateful people. Show your maturity level and rant about Tech on your own blog. The UGA blogs are there for that reason. I have no problem with you guys making fun of Tech. Doesn’t bother me. But let me make a joke about UGA losing to someone at work and the UGA fans go home and I have to hire someone else to come in and sweep the floors. At least pick up the beers cans that fall out of your pick-up when you try and lay rubber when you scream out of the parking lot. Thanks!

How many points is Fresno State favored over Tech?

By GA Tech insider

December 20, 2007 8:58 AM | Link to this

gt45, I said I wasn’t going to blog any more after all my insults, but I thought I would make one last attempt. Unless Les Miles totally blows it, Tenuta is going to LSU.

There is a standing offer on the table to stay with Tech as Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach, but Coach Tenuta has decided to let Coach Johnson start fresh with his own staff. Looks like Giff Smith and Jean-Mary are sticking around, and three of Coach Johnson’s staff will be joining from Navy after the bowls.

There is about a 1% chance that Tenuta will change his mind as the deal has not been signed with LSU, and we all know how stable Les Miles can be. That is why nothing has been announced yet regarding Tech’s staff…They are hoping Tenuta will change his mind.

By JustMe

GA Tech Insider….

Really? Tenuta is already planning to go to LSU? I wonder why he or LSU doesn’t make that announcement?

By GA Tech insider

December 20, 2007 9:23 AM | Link to this

JustMe, no paperwork has been signed yet so nothing is final, and no one wanted any more distractions for the players for either team. Also, out of respect that Coach Tenuta has for Georgia Tech, and the commitment he made to the players to coach them in the bowl, he asked that nothing be said until after the game.

From GA Tech’s perspective, they are still hoping that Les Miles screws up (and we all know that is a possibility) and Jon changes his mind so the Tech job has not yet been offered to anyone else.

I really hope coach Tenuta changes his mind and stays at Tech. All he needed was alittle help from the offense to be National contenders. If he stays Tech will be in the top ten with a chance for another National championship. Year after year. Go Jackets

By Ramblin Wrecker

December 20, 2007 9:38 AM | Link to this

JustME,

I think GA Tech Insider made it clear “why he or LSU doesn’t make that announcement?” because Tenuta hasn’t decided yet. Why hasn’t Tenuta decided yet? Probably because he didn’t want to lose the opportunity to show his wares as a head coach in the bowl game. If he accepted another job, he would surely not coach the bowl game, when GT already has a new head coach on payroll. The other evidence that Tenuta is likely heading out is that GT is interviewing Ellis Johnson, DC from Miss State (and who knows who else) for the job. If Tenuta had displayed a true desire to stay, do you think Dan Rad & Paul Johnson would interview replacements right in front of him? I doubt it. CPJ didn’t have high ranked defenses at Navy, so you’d assume he’d be interested in retaining a successful DC that already has the pulse of his defense and the university and the recruiting. Unless there was just some obvious personality conflict between CPJ & Tenuta. I think Tenuta has a job waiting for him, likely at LSU and wanted the opportunity to be head coach of the bowl game for his resume, and GT knows that and has proceeded with looking for a replacement.

Ramblin Wrecker, several coaches were interviewed because Paul Johnson is a smart man and hedged his bet…He couldn’t risk getting caught with no options for a Defensive Coordinator just in case Tenuta decided not to stay. Nothing more, nothing less. It was business and Jon understood it and respected it.

What has taken so long is Tenuta’s respect for GA Tech, Dan R., and his family’s love of Atlanta. Jon really appreciated Dan R. coming to him and telling him when he decided that Paul Johnson was the selection for Head Coach, and why, and also told him that while all of GA Tech wanted Tenuta to stay, it would be Paul Johnson’s call 100%. Dan would support Paul with whatever he needed to retain Tenuta financially if that was what he wanted to do, but it would not be required.

Jon Tenuta really respected that. This is precisely what happened and what has caused this enormous pause in the decision making process.

At the end of the day, I think Jon decided that Coach Johnson needed to start with his own staff leadership, and that is what has led to the decision, but I cannot say for sure as he such a private man.

I think Tenuta feels a level of commitment to this team to see them through the bowl process, and probably then tip his hand. As much as I want him to stay, I feel like there must be another offer on the table, or he would have already announced his decision. I’m sure he feels jilted, but I hope time cures that. However, it would not be fair to Johnson to make him wait, either.

Tenuta will be gone soon, look at it from his point of view. Be a DC on an SEC team that is favored heavily to win the NC or stay here in a rebuiling year. LSU has a huge always sold out stadium and will have many more games nationally televised. It is not exactly the same here - well it is reality and hope it will change. Not to mention the media LOVES the SEC and it shows in their coverage.

Lastly considering our financial situation, I am sure LSU can offer more money. Dont mean to paint a dark picture here, but it is a realistic view.

I have a chance to go to a national power as their DC for a substantial raise and better exposure. Or, I can stay here and work for the guy that my current employer thinks is a better coach than I am, that is if our egos don’t clash andI can probably use that as leverage for a small raise if the athletic association isn’t totally broke. I can get some fawning props from some Thursday night ESPN announcer about my great defense while losing to another Maryland or BC. Tell you what folks, I’m outta here for greener pastures and a future chance to get a shot at head coach if Fresno State doesn’t embarrass us in the Blue Bowl.

I think if Tenuta was a Tech grad, had more ties to Atlanta, or really wanted the challenge in getting us where we know we can be, he would have made the decision and it would be public. I respect both Tentuta and CPJ for how this has been handled, and somewhat at LSU if in fact they do have a contract. Keeping it quiet is the right thing to do for the players, and that is really what bowls are about. I would love to see him stay but I understand if he does not and agreed again that he does want to get at least one game as Head Coach under his belt-a win would look real good on the resume’. If you don’t believe that the AJC is biased, just look at how they phrased their poll on whether you agreed on the Expert’s bowl prediction for each team.

The UGA poll get’s the simple “yes/no” of whether you agree with their picks. The Tech poll gets the “yes/no” as well as “they all should have picked them to lose”.

Talk about spin…

I have to agree - I believe he is gone on Jan 1st. Keeping it quiet for the players as they should. Tech did not want him as head coach.

LSU has better players and commits, a loyal fan base, chance at a NC, and most likely lot more $$$.

Tech fans are tough on their coaches and dont fill the seats of even a small stadium. LSU will seem like heaven and he will get to attend teir 1/BCS bowls. Good coaches will always move on to better jobs, Tech is a stepping stone on the coaching ladder. Dont kid yourself into thinking that PJ will stay in Atlanta after a few good years - he will move on to a teir 1 school.

By GA Tech insider

Eric, I would normally agree with you, but in Coach Tenuta’s case, you are off base.

If you look at his resume, he has been at Defensive Coordinator at Ohio State and North Carolina prior to GA Tech so your logic is misspoken. Coach Tenuta didn’t stay at those Universities very long because of the politics.

This is one of the reasons Jon has stayed at GA Tech so long. He has been treated well and has been left alone to do what he loves. This is also why it has taken so long for him to make up his mind to leave.

I would also add that this is why I have said there is that small (1%) chance that he may change his mind and decide to stay, if Les Miles starts to screw with him…

By Took so long

December 20, 2007 2:18 PM | Link to this

The only reason that Tenuta has stayed so long at Tech is because no top tier program would offer him a job with his gimmick defense. Some other nobody school like Tech might offer uim to come in and run his defense, if he goes to LSU you can bet he will have to come up with some strategy other than blitz on every down otherwise LSU will rapidly drop out of the power elite after every team with a competent offensive line and decent QB lights them up like a christmas tree.

Took so long, the people in the know have the utmost respect for Jon Tenuta and his schemes.

Real college experts realize the main problem his defenses have had are that they have been on the field most of the game and didn’t have enough depth.

Don’t fool yourself thinking Coach Tenuta hasn’t had numerous opportunities to leave and has chosen to stay. He has been very comfortable at GA Tech and has enjoyed the freedom of being able to run his defenses without someone looking over his shoulder or having to glad hand or play politics.

This is one of the reasons he hasn’t gotten stronger consideration as a head coach, and he, frankly, hasn’t aggressively sought one. He just isn’t that kind of guy and isn’t comfortable in that role.

By the way, Eric, Coach Tenuta, is already one of the highest paid Assistant football coaches in America. GA Tech has treated him well and he has been loyal to the program in return.

By Took so long

Took so long, I suppose you know all of this because you are Jon Tenuta’s agent, or because you are so well entrenched within the college football fraternity that you know this through your personal contacts?

I have been associated with GA Tech for more years than you have probably been alive. I am communicating with the GA Tech Athletic Association daily, in person when able and with other means when I’m not.

I lettered in football at GA Tech many years ago and have had the pleasure of meeting many fine Southern Gentleman coaches through the years, including Bobby Dodd, Bear Bryant, and Vince Dooley, to name but a few. I also have met a few who were not so Gentlemanly, and I will not mention their names because it would not be polite.

I will say to you, sir, that Coach Jon Tenuta is a fine young man, a fine coach, and has been an excellent representative of the University. He has been courted almost from the day he arrived on our campus, but he has been loyal to GA Tech and to his kids.

If he chooses to leave us at this time all GA Tech fans owe him a huge amount of gratitude for a job well done. He has handled this coaching change with class, and dignity, and I would suggest, sir, this is something you might learn from based on your postings.

To Buzz Belle, “getting Tech to where we know we should be?” Would that be the Nut Bowl or the Muffler Bowl? Except for the freak year of 1990 the Tech program has been inconsequential on the national scene for almost half a century. Tech certainly wasn’t a BCS contender no matter who the coach might have been. One good running back and some good kickers won’t get you into the championship game. I’m not surprised that you just jumped to the conclusion that I am a Georgia fan, every time someone says something negative about Tech y’all immediately blame it on the Georgia fans or the Atlanta newspaper. I’m a graduate of that well known football factory, Millsaps, located in Jackson Miss. I have lived in several areas of the country over the last 20 something years since I finished school and don’t kid yourselves other than your fight song GA Tech isn’t known outside of the immediate area. Georgia isn’t as well known around the country as their fans like to believe but they fare much better around the country than Tech does. I’ll grant one of the Tech fans perpetual whines that the Georgia fans and Auburn fans are always expecting great things from their football programs and can be pretty obnoxious at times but compared to Tech fans they are the most pleasant fans in the world. Tech fans are known for whining and blaming every loss in every sport on poor officiating, media coverage, and their own coaching staffs. Tech people seem to think that every athlete who goes there is some kind of six star recruit with a 1600 SAT score and a 4.9 GPA and that all the kids who go elsewhere are knuckle dragging neanderthals or else were paid to attend Georgia, Clemson, or LSU. I’ll clue you in GA Tech has been on probation for academic hanky panky for the last few years and none of those other schools have. In short I have no dog in your fight with Georgia but you can bet that I will favoring the Bulldogs in every constest against the Yellow Jackets. They gripe whine and complain about every defeat but are rays of sunshine compared to the “woe is me, everyone is pickeing on us, we were cheated again” mentality of the few Tech fans. Your arrogance in dismissing anyone who doesn’t recognize your self conceived superiority and aggrandizement is enough to turn most college football fans away.

GT Insider - Well written and well said. Thanks for being a “classy” representative amongst the fervid.

Hmmm - Nice generalizations. Actually living in Las Vegas, I find your comments completely false with respect to Tech not being well-known. People here actually know more about Tech than UGA. I happen to have run into more Tech Alum here than UGA by a factor of about 5 to 1. I have run into more Tech fans than UGA fans by a factor of about 2 to 1. My wife went to UGA, so we happen to recognize these things. What would I attribute that to? Probably basketball, as UNLV is definitely not a football powerhouse by any stretch. Then, there is the BYU influence and Tech’s recent history of playing BYU. I think a better thing to say might be that neither school is followed by any sizable fan base outside of Georgia. I would also venture to say that Tech is much more widely known in Cali for just about anything. Again, these are all opinions, not based in fact, which, surely yours are the same and may be true based on what geographic area you are talking about. There are many generalizations that can be made about Mississippi as well, but they are not germain, in any way, to this Blog.

As for Tenuta, definition of a class act, without a doubt. I hate to seem him go, but can not and would not take issue with it if he did. LSU would be a step up from about any program, Tech/UGA included.

I might also mention that I knew Sgt. Edgar Hodges, the gruff old man who was GA Tech’s equipment manager for several years and came up with the GT logo everyone sees on the helmets.
