Creative fundraising: Only $11.2 million to go
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’ve got to hand it to Georgia Tech’s athletics department. Someone there was smart enough to figure out a quick way to capitalize on the excitement surrounding the hiring of a new football coach.
Tech fans were invited to bid on the first Paul Johnson autographed Georgia Tech football (the contest closed Friday). The white football with the gold GT logo and Johnson’s autograph was to have fetched at least $650 (the current high bid as I write this blog).
Here’s a link: http://ramblinwreck.cstvauctions.com/gallery.cfm.
Tech is paying Johnson $11.2 million over seven years, before incentives and benefits. At an average of $700 a football, that would be only a little more than 2,200 footballs a year.
The athletics department also has to pay off the remaining $4 million on Chan Gailey’s contract, plus the approximately $500,000 owed Navy to buy out Johnson’s contract, plus remaining debt on the Bobby Dodd Stadium expansion. That’s a lot of dough. And there’s only so much ticket sales and Tech Fund contributions can cover.
So why stop with autographed footballs? How about auctioning off:
—One play call a game. Whoever puts up the most cash can design and call the first play of the third quarter.
—A football scholarship. Chan Gailey had to get by on 79 scholarship players this season and last season. What could it hurt to auction off one of the 85 Johnson will have at his disposal in 2008? (The winner would have to meet NCAA and Georgia Tech eligibility requirements and sign a waiver agreeing not hold Tech liable for any injuries suffered in practices or games.)
—A spot in the halftime show. You can fill the role of Big Boi and perform with the Georgia Tech Marching Band on the biggest karaoke stage in Atlanta!
Ideas?

Mike, that’s pretty funny. Winning is what will solve the problem in the long run. Winning will fill the stadium and motivate more alumni to donate to the program. Winning will attract more fans from outside the Tech community. At this point, I see no reason to doubt that Coach Johnson will be able to develop a program that will win enough to produce these kinds of collateral results.

Mike,
This is exaclty the type of article that makes people think that the folks at the AJC have an anti-tech bias. I can’t believe that you got a degree in journalism and a job with a major newspaper in order to write things like this.
The only conceivable purpose of this piece is to put Tech down. This entry has no information of note and has no newsworth item in it. Therefore, I can only assume that you wrote it to move the needle. Unfortunately it seems that in today’s world, journalists go out of their way to create news and buzz. One of the ways to do that is to anger the consumer. It seems counter-intuitive, but your article is the proof in the pudding. So kudos to you. You’ve angered this consumer and moved the needle.

**Mike, I like you man, but this blog was SUPER, SUPER lame. Since things appear slow. How about these things.
Call the recruits now ask them what they’ve learned about the new coach and where they fit in the incoming system.
Let’s do BIOs on the possible incoming coaches from Navy. Speculate on who should remain from the previous staff (Giff, Tenuta, Jean-Marie, Jeep, Kelly, Bond, etc)
Do I a diary of Coach Johnson’s first week on the job?
Speak about the positive impact of Johnson’s decision to leave the Navy immediately and start his new job.
Follow-up with Chris Jackson
Ask if Taylor Bennett, Booker, or Nesbitt starts the bowl game and what we want to see out of the game
Mike, you have been a good beat writer, but today’s effort was bad. There is so much to speak about, why waste ink and bandwidth on today’s blog.**

Its okay to be funny, even sarcastic, but that only works if the quality is decent. This is not even funny in the least.
You are making fun of merchandising? Are you really being serious. Have you NEVER seen a school make money of the school name?
Besides, the 4 mil was paid for by alumni. Unfortunately, the “journalists” at the AJC could never figure that one out, although it is quite obvious from public records. The AA just does not have the money to shell out that amount, and there is no reason to believe that they will by the end of next year.
I need to stop reading AJC stuff that was not put out by Bisher (Even the other Mike is quite good…)

Remember Knobler, no one should ever write anything even remotely less than fawning, praising, and apple polishing about Tech and their gonzo athletic programs. You will be immediatley called a biased UGA fan and accused of pedophilia, and environmental recklessness. Everything written in the AJC must show that Tech is the greatest thing since sliced bread, has never lost a game or match in any sport (just been cheated by the biased officials) and will bring world peace as soon as the rest of the college athletic programs agree that no one can challenge Tech’s self annointed sainthood. On the othe hand I do agree that this is a really boring topic for a blog.

Why do I have to go to the Annapolis newspaper to find out which assistant coaches are staying with them, or are reportedly coming to us? (By the way their D-Coordinator and recruiting coordinator are staying reportedly.possible good news for Giff Smith and coach Tenuta)Is this not worth mentioning? All this article did was make people angry. The very people you are writing for. And by the way as a young person (21) and student, I found the Big Boi performance to be entertaining. I know several people that are Atlantans and “semi” tech fans that came to this game just because of Big Boi. they still cheered for the white and gold. Just a smart a* stupid, devisive article, when we want to know about our coaches!!!!!!!!!

Mike, I read Jack’s story on Big D-Rich a few days ago on RW.com. It was an excellent piece, and D-Rich is an excellent representative of Ma Tech.
If you can’t see that your blog is intended to poke fun at Tech, you should go through all these comments again. You really think all the commentators are wrong? I don’t think it should be your reader’s job to see your perspective.
I can just see the AJC staff (not just sports, mind ya) sitting around a room trying to figure out why circulation keeps declining. Heh…

Mike, as I told you earlier this week, some positive news about GA Tech would be a welcome thing from most writers at the AJC. Outside of Mr. Bisher, I would say it is rarely seen at your paper.
I suggested to you, after several negative articles in a row, that you should consider doing a blog about some recruits now looking at the Tech program, now that Paul Johnson is the new Head Coach. I specifically made this comment after the AJC ran a blog that another QB decided to drop his commitment and the AJC ran another insinuating other recruits were wavering. The response was that the AJC couldn’t chase after every recruit trying to see who might be interested in the program.
The funny thing is that the national recruiting sites immediately picked up on a local Dual QB prospect, who thrives in the system, and who is now potentially interested in GA Tech where he really wasn’t interested before the change in head coaches…and still the AJC hasn’t said a word.
Mr. Bisher is a class act, a true gentleman, and a writer who is well respected by all sides (UGA and GA Tech fans alike). He says things all of us enjoy reading and things that make us think. Mr. Bisher also makes points that may make us uncomfortable at times, but he does it in a way that does not alienate us, and that is a lesson that some of the other writes at the AJC need to learn.
Mike, if you cannot tell by the comments on the blogs by now that we are not amused or entertained by your writing style or attempts at humor, then please do what we ask and become that investigative reporter we have asked for.
Be fair and balanced. We can handle bad news but want nice stories along the way. And please, monitor the blogs for the perverts like yellowblood and others who have nothing but insults and obscenities, which have no place on your blogs.

Here’s the best way to raise the funds….Because of the recession in 2001 had to reduce ticket purchases and had’nt been back after a 20 plus year record. Now that Tech looks like it’s getting a potent offense to go with hopefully a good defense and the fact one can restart old point totals makes it’s attractive to buy tickets again. Also winning helps more than anything. We may loose a few recruits but I expect we will gain a lot more soon. From what i”ve read online several season ticket holders had bailed out. Once they realize their points system can be restarted at the old level they may jump back in.

Mike, the info is interesting from a standpoint that once inportant matters get resolved, i.e. Coach Tenuta, def line coaches, recruiting, etc. we can all sit back and have a little fun. This is not the time. To alot of us that love Tech, it isn’t just what happened this year, it is several years of frustration. With DR we are finally getting someone who listens and understands what we have been going through with Tech. I know Ga Tech Insider from his past blogs has been through many good but also many trying years at Tech like myself and all we want is a fair shake. My personal feelings are we are so close to getting back to where we know we can be we are all a bit anxious. Other bloggers, my gut feel is this weekend you are going to see some good stories, not just about Coach Johnson, but also about Ga. Tech. Hang in there - Mike has been on the road and busy and all papers have deadlines. Suggestion Mike - let one of these bloggers write a quick line to see how they do! Go Jackets and THWG!

NGaDawg, the first thing I would say to you is to go back to school. You need to learn how to spell and your punctuation is horrid.
It is obvious you are not a graduate of UGA because they have raised their admission standards once Jan Kemp opened the kimono on them.
That tells me you are like 70% of the Georgia fans…You have never attended the University yet, you place UGA flags on your pick up trucks and decals on your doors and you woof every Saturday with a can of PBR in your fake paw.
To you I would say, get a life. There is more to this world than living vicariously. Get an education and make something of yourself.

NGaDawg - Jan Kemp is not an idiot, she actually did all of you a favor. Ga is not #1, check any poll you want too. I am sure you would like Ga. to be number one but losing to Tenn as you did and SC does not qualify you for the number one status. I understand you are nervous at our recent hiring, I would be too if I were you. However, look at it this way - the rivalry just took a giant leap up and you can be a part of it. We at Tech decided you had your reign, now we will take it back to where it belongs. I don’t mean to put you in the same class as Bisher and Outlar, but keep plugging away. I remember the preseason practice blogs you guys did which I thought were really good.
Hopefully the plug you gave for the autographed football, raised it a few bucks. Thanks for the plug. I see the auction has closed but don’t know the final price.
There are some good suggestions for articles that were posted (See WaCoJacket’s list), that everyone would enjoy. I know that I would like to know who is going and who is staying. Carter Strickland does a lot of writing on Ga recruits, we could use something similar in the paper. Maybe an interview with some of them.

Mike Knobler — Good Lord, people!!!! I don’t intend to be too harsh, but I’m going to defend Mike, here. Mike, thanks for a lightly amusing little column, which you obviously wrote primarily just for fun. It took about one whole minute to read; it was harmless. You were not attempting to cryptically denigrate Tech (Paranoia? No! We must decode esoteric anti-Tech subversion by the journalist!). Rather, you were merely playing around a bit, trying to ensue a light-hearted discussion. Your reward is to be unjustly ridiculed. Telling some of these folks to “lighten up” is akin to asking Rosie O’Donnell to not hang upside down like a bat and to speak rationally for 30 seconds (9/11 was an inside job!). There is plenty of time—it’s only mid-December—to learn whether the incumbent D.C. stays (we’ll know after the bowl game), which assistants are coming down from Navy, what things may impact recruiting, whether Tech will run the unstoppable triple option (I hope so!), etc. By replying “Thanks for the feedback,” and then calmly defending yourself against your abusers, you show your aplomb. After all that wearisome traveling to Coach Johnson’s hometown in N.C., you’re going to give us an in-depth story on Sunday about the origins of the new Tech coach’s identity, which requires much detailed writing. You are working hard, and you are a talented writer who usually provides instructive and interesting info about the Yellow Jackets. Some reasonable and fair (I know that’s subjective) criticism from readers is appropriate. However, please don’t permit yourself to become dejected due to the mean-spirited factions among your critics, some of whom might benefit from either an exorcism or an enema.

Apparently there’s not much going on today at Tech, other than the QB commitment. Nice to know he was so highly rated as a dual quarterback. The most interesting thing right now would be to know which assistants are staying. I just read the bio on Bond, and he has an outstanding record of winning. I think he stays. Tenuda stays with more $, unless Miles comes calling. The recruiters stay. Yea! Any other opinions on this?
PS: Had Knobler not written the article today, all the interesting comments would have been missed. Be thankful for the AJC writers.

So…Let me get this straight…..a 4-star QB de-commits, and we replace him with a 2-star QB? Stole him from Middle Tennessee? C’mon?? I know it’s just the first signee for PJ, but PLEASE tell me he’s not going to fill our roster with NAVY talent? I’ll give him a fair shake (translation: enough time to make a fair assessment) but this is not the kind of start that bodes well for great expectations (which there will CERTAINLY be) in the future. Hopefully, Josh Nesbitt will render this sighning moot.

She got all that money and obviously didn’t spend even a nickel of it to get her hair problem fixed.

I don’t get all the fuss. I’ve been a GT fan since 1960 and personaly don’t care if Mark Richt is covering the Jackets for the AJC. Let’s just see how Coach Johnson does. I think it was a good hire. I’ll send in $500 (I’m comfortably retired but not rich) to help pay for his contract. If 5000 other GT fans will do the same, we’ll have a good start.

Sorry you brought up Jan Kemp, Buzz Belle. But Jan Kemp actually is related to this blog topic. Tech is in financial difficulty in large part because of the mediocrity of the football program in recent years.
One reason Tech had difficulty under Gailey was the loss of players to academics and probation. More players were lost to academics than probation. Specifically, the academic rule that got Tech’s players was the one the NCAA put in as a result of the Jan Kemp fiasco about satisfactory progress toward a degree.
The thing I haven’t heard is, what happened to the person in charge of academics? Was anybody ever held accountable? If they were I never read about it in the AJC.
The Tech athletic department has had a long history of keeping players eligible and moving along academically. The administration took that job away and gave it to somebody who dropped the ball big time.
Where is the accountability for that? And where is the accountability for the financial mess Tech’s athletics are in? Hint: David Braine never did anything without authorization from somebody above him.

I am a Dawg fan and even I have to admit this was a pretty lame column. With a new coach and a bowl game coming up, sure seems like there are lots of other topics you could write about.

One final comment: Paul Johnson is a good coach and he should succeed at Tech. However, if he loses as many players to probation and academics as Gailey did Tech fans will continue to be disappointed.
Gailey inherited the probation problems and the responsibility for academic monitoring was taken away from him. He was the lightening rod for all Tech’s problems but there were imortant things that happened that were beyond his control. Tech fans villify Gailey, but Tech’s problems aren’t that simple. I haven’t heard a single word on this blog or anyplace else for that matter trying to understand the systemic deficiencies that caused Tech’s problems. It is easy to blame the coach, but there is more to it.
I’m through and off to my mountain house. No internet there. Good luck in Boise.

For all you know-it-all uga fans, lighten up. We’re actually trying to help you out with this auction. The money will be put in a discretionary fund for mark richt to help bail your players out of jail so calm down.

Mike, please remind me to laugh because I forgot to when I read your blog above. If you are out of ideas to write about GT sports, why just not quit your daytime job and try your hand at something else. This is a totally worthless piece man.

Wow. That’s the most biased report I’ve read from the AJC yet. At least y’all are showing your true colors blatantly now. Please just don’t write about Tech if you’re going to insult us. Go cover the “Dawgs” or global warming or something. I’m glad I don’t subscribe to this drivel.

There are plenty of things to write about with a new coach getting settled in. The problem is you might have to get out and do a little research/work.

If the Tech team finds out that their uniforms and coaches are funded by sodomy, it will really hurt morale. I say we find other means of raising cash.
