Johnson’s hometown is football country
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
My apologies for blogging so late today. I have had a long day, venturing all the way to Newland, N.C., hometown of new Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, for a story planned for Sunday’s AJC.
Johnson’s hometown is not far from Boone, N.C., home to Appalachian State. Boone is one county over, I believe. They’re gearing up for the Division I-AA championship game against Delaware.
Appalachian State, you remember, knocked off Michigan. Delaware’s claim to I-A fame? It knocked off Johnson’s bowl-bound Navy team.
I’ve talked with about 15 people about Johnson and will spend tomorrow trying to distill it into one story. It won’t all fit. He’s an interesting guy, who has made a lot of very loyal friends.

That is great to hear! Johnson seems like a stand-up guy. It’d be great if you can post some things on practice for the bowl game in a few weeks and maybe get some first impressions as Johnson watches practice.

I am sitting atop the Blue Ridge (in Blowing Rock, 5 miles from Boone, 10 from Newland) where we have lived for 15 years. Paul Johnson has a great reputation for being #1. successful in his coaching career#2. being candid/a non-political guy with an opinion(GREAT~!!!) and #3.consistent as a person/coach and leader. His players will respect him.
I trust him to do his job.

All Tech fans, send a note to DRad asking that we go back to the gold pants and white jerseys for the home uniforms. He’s listening and if enough folks voice this opinion the change will be made.
Let’s get back to tradition!

Tech Fans, go to RamblinWreck.com and read Jack Wilkinson’s story of Dec. 4th about Darryl Richard. This is one of the student/athletes we can really be proud of.

A coach is kind of like a wife. I have friends that have been married a few times. At a wedding not long back my friend was on his fourth or fifth wife I can’t keep up and they were handing out bumper stickers at the reception that said to blow your horn if you had been married to this guy. I have been married 26 years to one wife. I am kind of boring and nobody is hitting their horn or even noticing that I am passing by. One thing I do is tell the truth, wouldn’t do any good to lie, my wife knows me too well. Maybe she got to know me early because I never remember getting away with a lie with her. She simply corrected the statement pointed out the misdirection and went about her business. Johnson is one of those long term types. He has had a very little traveled resume, in today’s standards. I am sure he is welcome in Statesboro and Annapolis, even Hawaii. As my dad said years ago,” we picked ourselves a good one son.”

I’m buying an AJC this weekend to read all the good articles about Coach Johnson. We haven’t heard alot about what is going on now - seems purposefully quiet. How is recruiting going - we’re going into the “off limits” time frame, what about Tenuta. Coach Tenuta - if you read this, I’m just one small loyal fan who wants to see what your defense can do with a good offense - and you know Coach Johnson will have a good offense! Stay with what you know, good weather, great school with character, rich history and tradition, and a fan base that loves you. We want you and need you - please stay!

Uniforms will be PJ’s decision….as it was CG’s….and O’L’s……
The team has wanted to wear the gold at home the last couple of seasons (in early-season afternoon games, I don’t know WHY, though)
If they decide to wear white at home again, they have to let EACH visiting team know before the season and each team has the right to refuse to wear their ‘dark’ jersey at GT (they aso have to let us know this before the season.)

I like the gold jersies at home but white is fine too. I just want to get rid of any BLUE on the uniform period. The pants and the shirt. The white jersies should have gold numbers and the gold jersies should have white numbers. There’s a reason why our 2 fight songs say white and gold with no mention of blue.

I think our uniforms are just fine the way they are. They already are some of the best looking uniforms 9home and away) in the country. I thought we looked great in Blue in the ACCCG. I would personally like to see us break out the all gold for one home game and the all white for an away game. But tell us something about the assistants PLEASE!!!!!!

Mike — I just read your article entitled New Tech Coach Driven, and it is excellent; it is well-written and informative about the background that helped shape Coach Johnson’s personality. I especially liked reading that he calls his Mom virtually every day, as well as his brothers. Good research and interviews. Much traveling. Hard work. Well done.

I agree with Wrecker1, but I liked the numbers outlined, a la 2000. I’d love to see those make a come back.

My uniform preferences are as follows. Absolutely keep the gold helmets. Wear gold jerseys at home with white—not blue—numerals. For away games, I like the traditional gold trousers matched with white jerseys but——with gold—not blue—numerals, ala the uniforms worn during the O’Leary years (fittingly, he’s made good on the chance to have the same thing during his tenure at UCF since their school colors are also white and gold).
If the powers-that-be must keep the blue, then they could use it (or black) as piping lines to highlight the numbers to make them easier to see.
I’d prefer to jettison the blue entirely, per the fight songs’ lyrics. Tech’s colors are, traditionally, white and (old) gold. However, A.D. Radakovich wrote last year in “The Good Word” on Ramblin’ Wreck.com to the effect that, although he’s aware of the complaints about the blue infusion, that blue remains an acceptable tertiary color.
If Tech does go back to the white jerseys at home, although that would be my second choice, it would be okay with me. Some of you may know this, but the Dallas Cowboys, according to what I’ve read, adopted the look of Tech’s uniforms (white jerseys at home) to model their own uniforms after, back in the early ’60s when the franchise was being created.
Please, please, please — whatever you do — get rid of the butt-ugly black cleats and socks!!!! I hate those things. A man can appear well dressed at first glance, and then you look down at his shoes and… The only bad-looking aspect of the 1970 throwback uniforms (I easily remember those uniforms) against UVA in 2006 — the black shoes and socks — is what Tech kept. I like black shoes…dress shoes with nice slacks or a suit and tie…but not for football. The black is about the same color and shade as the blue (coincidentally, it’s navy blue and the new coach has come from Navy) and therefore clashes grossly. Plus, Tech’s colors are not black and gold (Wake Forest, Purdue, N.O. Saints, e.g.). They are white and gold. Get your feets in some white cleats!!!
