Seven in a row; UGA band plays in celebration
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sure, Georgia came out smelling like roses on each of the three bizzare loose-ball plays in the end zone today, a sequence unlike any you’re likely to ever see again … but the difference in today’s game could be boiled down to quarterback play, and the way the long ball was defended by each team.
Don’t stop if you’ve read or heard this before.
Matthew Stafford was not razor sharp today, but he was pretty darned good on several occasions. Not as impressive as BC’s Matt Ryan was here a couple months ago. Still, pretty good. The kid has some moxie in the pocket, seems to know just when to unload it. And he generally doesn’t unload it just to get rid of it. He has a plan most of the time.
Taylor Bennett? Again, this is not a new refrain, but he wasn’t helped by receivers dropping passes, like the sure touchdown pass to Correy Earls on the second play of the game. And Calvin Booker, he of the howitzer arm, was hurt bhy a couple drops, too.
They just finished.
Tech fought like mad, but … seven straight.
Chan Gailey walked out with one hand in each back pocket. Mark Richt ran to meet him.

Oh were they actually playing a game? I couldn’t tell by the ABC broadcast.
I just thought it was Entertainment Tonight on campus with the interviews of UGA and the deal with Munson.

Hey, hard fought game by the TECH team. Forgive the interview with Munson as it’s likely his last regular season game calling the DAWGS!
You gave us a scare for most of the game. Forgive me for this but,,,We really hope Chan sticks around.

I’m grateful for the win as a dawg fan, but we did get 80% of the breaks in this one. It wasn’t the refs, the crowd, the coaches - it was just a little more talent and every bounce possible.
7 in a row feels good! Sometimes you have to win one like this in a massive streak!
What bowl will select the dawgs? I’ve heard Orange, Rose and Fiesta… I don’t see the scenario in which we would get bumped down from a bcs game. Orange seems regionally logical, but Georgia vs USC in the Rose Bowl… my god - that’s the two hottest teams in the land!

There is always a positive that can be made of any situation. I hope for your program that it is Chan getting canned. Perhaps his hands were in his back pocket bc he was going to re-read his contract extension just to make sure he leaves with your alumni’s cash. He was probably wetting his depends, but he could have at least shook CMR hand. Well fought techies, but our depth was just too much.

Once again clobbered by a less physical UGA team. The officials really know just when to call a penalty.I wish I could say, “at least BB season is here”, but even that wont fly. At least this is the last of Gailey.

As a independent- Chan is not the most flashy coach, but he is a good man, and he did have you in the ACC title game last year, even with Reggie Ball. Look at Nebraska as a case study, i bet they wish they still had Frank Solich instead of Bill Callahan.

Gotta chime in before the drunks and sundry idiots take over.Tech played the good guys tough, and we caught a lotta breaks.
Ga is a football school ,and Tech should be, at least three or four years out of ten.
But you(tech) lose more than you should ‘cause you are to slow to fire a so-so coach.
Thanks.

Please keep Chan — UGA fans are really lovin it.
If they players could capatalize on the other team’s mistakes and actually recover a ball or put points on the board, they might learn to win someday. Stop blaming the coach for the team’s lack of focus.

What a joke of a game!! What a joke of a team!! What a joke of a coach!!Now I really understand why Dogfans call our team the joke by coke. Wish we had a head coach like Richt. He was making all the right calls for his team. And the officiating was fair. Looking at it objectively, that was the most bizzare string of calls I’ve ever seen, but taken one at a time, each was the right call.

Congrats Dawgs.
Bizarre game, could have been closer. Some of the big plays were breaks that went your way, but most were lack of execution by GT players. Can’t complain about the coaching in this game either - it’s kind of shameful that it’s the main subject of the posts here.
See you next year.

I hate to tell you folks that are so upset with Gailey, but he didn’t drop a single pass OR defend against a single pass … we need some cornerbacks and receivers. I just hated to see Booker come out of the game … seems he was throwing the ball better than Bennett … course that is Gailey.

Guys, you have to realize something: GaTech just doesn’t have the talent level that UGA does. It would be hard for Tech to win this game because of that, regardless of the Coach. Be carefull what you wish for; other teams thought they were bad until they made a coaching move.

Tech played a very good game yesterday. It isn’t Chan’s fault that none of the three opportunities to recover fumbles in the UGA endzone materialized (did I just write that we had three fumbles in our own end zone?)
Tech also had several passes dropped that could have kept drives going. If I recall, on the first tech series a sure touchdown pass was dropped. Gailey was overmatched talent wise but drew up a pretty good gameplan. This one could have and should have been closer than the score indicated. Tech’s staffe coached at least as well as UGA’s on Saturday.
That said, I don’t think that Gailey can survive the fire storm. That puts tech in a difficult position, there will be about half a dozen better jobs available this year AND there is the matter of tech’s strapped athletic department buying out Chan’s contract.
With Texas A&M, Nebraska,Michigan, and Ole Miss already looking for coaches and several other high profile vacancies to be filled… I think tech should take a chance on a young coordinator.
To make matters worse, UGA returns perhaps their best team of Richt’s tenure in 08 and the game will be played in front of 92,000. I see this thing getting to at least 8 in a row.

Nice game yesterday, the ball definitely bounced UGA’s way. As mentioned earlier, I don’t think it’s the year to change coaches. Give it one more year to see what he can do with a full slate of scholarships.

For what it’s worth….
I don’t think Tech should can Gailey. UGA will finish the season ranked in the top 5 and GT gave them all they could handle for over half the game. UGA put the ball on the ground and recovered in their own end zone three times. Tech covers a couple of those and it’s a different game,, you do the math.
That said, there is one knock on Gailey that I see. That is, he does not seem to do a good job with his quarterbacks. The many face plants by Reggie Ball are well chronicled. Bennett showed a lot of promise at the end of last season. He doesn’t seem to have progressed as much as I would expect this season. The blame for that is strictly in the coaches lap.

Ok the Moreno and Choice comments? I mean Moreno is and may still keep being a good back but come on Choice does it all with 8 in the box knowing there is no pass threat. So everyone in the stadium knows he will get the ball and he still runs over 100 yards a game Could you even think as to how many yards he would get with Georgia’s pass game. As much as I think Gailey is a nice man he has never developed a quarterback. Moreno may be a great back in the future but Choice is NOW

The answer= I don’t believe Chan will ever lead GT to a power or sell out stands nor do I believe Chan should be fired, I’m torn so this is my amicable way out of this. 1. Make an annoucement ASAP that Chan will be retained as Coach. 2. Hire fired Ole Miss coach Oreagon asap as Assist. Head Coach. Why? Chan is a slow-non exciting type of guy in a hype, fast pace world and city. Oreagon can recruit-see Miss, La. and Calif. with the work Giff is doing in state they can have greatly needed recruiting years. Oreagon is a ball of fire-we know Chan is like looking at paint dry. Oreagon knows defense-D-Cord. at So. Cal. and can help Tenuta with the times when the blitz packages won’t work. This is GT’s answer, hire Oreagon and please I know the goodies at Tech want Taylor to be the QB but the kid just doesn’t have it-stop defending him he would not start at 95% of the D-1 schools-he’s like Chan, great kid but average on the football field. I know that even if UGA gets the top 22 H.S. players in Ga. Auburn can get 4 or 5 Ala. 1 or 2 and their will still be enough good D-1 players in the state for Tech to have a national team.

Now I can tell some of you Tech folks are upset with me. Just let me remind you that I am a nice man. I also have 4 years left on a contract that will cost you $4 million to buy out. I do not know what all this fussing about won-lost records is all about anyway. Someone I once knew and loved said “It’s just a game, dog.” I think we should all think about that. If you get upset about a tech loss, then concentrate on your SAT score. If the team has a bad day, think about the amount of money you THINK you will make when you graduate. Of course it won’t be as much as me. As for hiring another coach, I cannot for the life of me think of anyone who realistically would take this job. Tech is a trash heap.

As good as Tashard Choice is - and the Nerds all give high praise to #22 - which they should - he still got outrushed by our second string Tailback (Thomas Brown) - on 8 less carries.

Oh yea - and Thomas Borwn outrushed Tashard - even going against John Tenuta and the nation’s leading defense in plays for negative yardage - on their home field. Bottom line - Tashard is very good - but he’d be lining up on the scout team in Athens.

For the record, Brown is first string and Moreno is the backup.
Hard fought game, Jackets; it really was in doubt until late in the fourth quarter. Choice is the real-deal and gave our defense fits. As to the calls, well, I’ll just say there was no home field advantage.
Good luck in your bowl.

Does Tech actually have the money to fire Gailey? They may be the first athletic department to bite the dust if they have to carry this dead weight and pay for a real coach. I wonder if last year’s shopping by this slow for prime time coach was not blessed by the athletic department as a way to save face for a huge mistake. The only problem is a man we pay one million a year for has no demand. You would think that is impossible. If we are paying that much for a product surely someone else wants him. NO MARKET and we are stuck with slow motion like a fat wife for four more years.

The Tech kids played their hearts out. Personally, was very concerned that we could lose this game.
The Tech Team was ‘loaded’ with Seniors. You knew that were going to leave it on the field.
As for Gailey… Class guy, who has represented GT well. But I’m not too concerned for him. Over $4MM still sitting in a contract… “Fire me tomorrow” for money like that!
With this said, if Tech is going to do it - this is the year. They are very young, so it is unlikely that they will be making a run at the ACC title next year… May as well start rebuilding with a new coach wit lots of energy..
Mark Richt is the perfect coach for UGA. As well as he has done - you cannot help to feel that the best is in front of him and his team…
See you in L.A.!

Ok, lets talk about how tech just does it to themselves. We dont even have to work to make them look ridiculous.
The bouncing thing to the techogeek song. What is that and why cant you at least keep it going during the entire highlight reel.
The “gold fellas”. Really, Really, Really Nerdy.
Taylor Bennett in the teletubbies costume. Need I say more?
The band sneaking up behind the visitors band, playing something really quickly then running off flipping birds and giggling. NERDS!
NO KNOWLEDGE OF FOOTBALL! Booing when calls are correct and asking for intentional grounding calls when the ball hit the WR feet. Wow.
Cheering when another team beats another team that has nothing to do with tech because its the only thing you have going for you. (tennessee beating Kentucky)
The guy trying to throw the ball thirty yards to win some money. Wow, I have seen 9 year old girls throw better and less feminine than that guy with tech shirt on.
Since 7 is the magical number I will stop there, but the list is endless. I always have hope that tech will not be so nerdy, but it just keeps getting worse. Keep showing that average starting salary and hang on to it, its all you have. I am 29 and make three times that $55,000 you are so proud of. Nerds.

Kendall, I beg to differ; when Brown came back from his injury, which gave Moreno his opportunity to start, Richt said Brown, the senior, would return as the #1 tailback. He may not have been in the first series against Tech but he didn’t lose his position in the depth chart. Check it out.

Richt did say Knowshon wasn’t ready to start - about 1200 yards ago. He’s started every game since Vandy. Point of original post was Tashard is a very good back - but would be #3 on the depth chart in Athens.
And I’m sorry - but why do Tech grads think they make so much more money than UGA grads? Most of the Tech guys I know are engineers - a nice steady paycheck for sure - but UGA grads are where you find your entrepreneurs and business leaders. Granted it’s a generalization, but regardless - it has nothing to do with the football team.
