Tech 27, UNC 25: They won, but …
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia Tech clinched a winning season but needed a field goal by Travis Bell with 15 seconds left to do it, against a North Carolina team that is now 3-8. And what were the Yellow Jackets thinking handing the ball to Tashard Choice with no timeouts and only seconds left? If he hadn’t gotten the first down, time could have expired.
They’re 7-4, with Georgia next. And Georgia will be a lot better than UNC.

Gailey butt was gone with 2:03 minutes to go! The team stepped up and won despite terrible coaching in the final 8 minutes. Fake field goal and the Tashard direct snaps with 2:00 minutes should have cost us the game.
I really think Gailey should be the first Tech coach to be fired after a win during the season. We might have a chance next week is Gailey is gone!

People, People, People……don’t get all goose bumppie just b/c we BARELY beat North Carolina. They are 3-8 for crying out loud!!! With their record we SHOULD have routed them 25-0, or some score close that. All you Gailey fans out there will be eating crow when Georgia hands us our butts on a “silver brithces” platter next Saturday. And don’t be fooled, Gailey knows that next week WILL MEAN HIS JOB!! FINALLY!!! He ain’t all smiles. In the back of his mind, he’s saying “Oh Crap, what are we going to do?” So you “Chan’s the Man” idiots soak it up now b/c next week will be a completely different story!! Hey, I finally figured out why the Tech boosters (all three of them) haven’t added pressure to have Gailey fired.
They don’t care for beaches, warm weather, and things of that nature during the winter months. Those are summer things! Those guys love skiing, and where is there better skiing in North America than Idaho’s beautiful Sun Valley, within short driving distance from Boise?
So, that explains how Gailey still has his jobs. All the influencial boosters for the Bugs are ski loving fanatics. Thus, they look forward to the yearly trips to Boise for skiing and football!
See, it all makes sense now.
Oh yeah, I just have this funky feeling, but I’m calling the game Dawgs 52 and Bugs 7.

I still remember the sign that the team ran through on the first game of the Chan error. “A New Era of Chan-pions” it said.” Well, I think we now know what a Chan-pion looks like. 7-6.

I can not believe it. First against Maryland you put the kicker in a bad spot on the hash mark then today twice with the game on the line again on the hash mark.
When you know you are going to kick a field goal please put the ball in the middle of the field and that way Bell will drill it almost every time.
The wide right today was straight and the Maryland kick just missed wide right and would have been good in the middle of the field.
I like Gailey and he has done a good job and keeps us in every game (for the most part), but put your kicker in the best situation to suceed as he is almost automatic.
As for the Ga game please run, run, run and use the frosh QB to run some and keep Ga’s offense off the field. That means always staying in bounds!!!!
Stay in bounds and run the ball then Ga will have less opportunity to score and then their QB’s mistakes will allow us to control the game like last year.
The fumble returned for a TD was bogus last year as picking the ball from a player in a pile is obviously down, but hey that is life. Refs blow calls and we got lucky that one year when Ga fumbled at our end zone when it really was not a fumble.
But I do think Ga fans know they got one last year that we outplayed them. I hope we can do it again this year, but it will be tougher.
I look for a fun game!

I hate these people who say fire Gailey AND NOT PROPOSE A REPLACEMENT. Yes, Gailey is not the coach that will take GT to the next level. Who is? Paul Johnson from Navy? Brian Kelly from Cincinnati? If you think GT can hire a $2 million/yr coach, you are wrong. GT will have to pay Gailey $4 million to coach somewhere else. Thanks a lot former AD, Dave Braine.

Let me see how many fumbles did the coaching staff have??? Oh yea they only call the plays not handle the ball. When was the last time a coach must less Coach Gailey lost the game because they fumbled. It doesn’t matter how you win as long as you win. The coaches can only do so much and don’t give me the crap about coaching the players up. As a former player if you can’t get up and execute your assignment them maybe you should be questioned as a player. I would rather have a man of character coaching me than one that is willing to cheat the system to get a “w”. When wa the last time you heard the players say anything bad about Coach Gailey?? Support the players and Coach Gailey or take your money and put it where the sun doesn’t shine!!

Hard to believe you Chan haters would find something to complain about in a win. Is it Chan’s fault that his players fumbled four times? I for one don’t believe so. And to win in spite of that is to be commended. Even Bill Curry, given time, developed a respectable program Tech. I believe with fan support Chan can and will do the same. Say what you want.

I’m not a big Chan Gaily fan, but this is a terrible season to try to hire a coach: a lot of great programs are going to be looking for new coachs and there aren’t any great coaches to be had. Take the post-season vacation in Boise, accept two more losses to Georgia, and fire him at the end of next year.

I completely don’t understand the fake field goal. Perhaps somebody can explain to me why that was a good call, but it seemed to me that it completely switched momentum and nearly cost us the game.
I was suspicious when Bell came on the field because Coach Gailey is normally so conservative and he doesn’t like to risk a miss from that far out. But if you are going to punt the ball, why, why, WHY, in the world do you not let the kid who is going to win the FREAKIN RAY GUY AWARD punt the ball. That call put Bell in a bad situation trying to do something he doesn’t normally do. Net result 19 yard punt and 29 yard return.
That play put our defense in a horrible position once again and the next time Bell stepped onto the field he missed a chip shot.
After the miss, I turned the game off and went out to rake leaves. I love this team and I want them to win them all, but this is awfully difficult to watch a coaching staff completely let down this team.

Congrats to Tech for winning despite 4 lost fumbles. I thought the coaching was good except for a couple of offensive series. Nesbitt brings excitement to the field but he makes Freshman mistakes. Bennett made some brilliant plays and some horrific ones. It is not realistic to expect victory over a better UGA team but I will go to the game with the mindset that anything can happen. As much as I love Tech football I am not sure this is the time to get rid of Gailey. There is some good young players on this team.

A close call, that’s for sure. But a win is a win. UNC will be dominate in the years ahead once Davis get’s more players in. As for the risk taking let’s remember our guys are learning how to take calculated risks on offensive side of ball. The problem now in the ACC is the money is going to attract top notch coaches look no further than Butch Davis at UNC. We will have to improve every year to stay competitive in this conference. Can we say passing attack?

Gailey screws up quarterbacks one by one: Suggs, Ball, Bennett and now he’s working on Nesbitt. I bet Manly and Booker are thankful not to have played for Chan, the QBB (QuarterBack Buster). Nis spin on Nesbitt is that they add a little more to his “package” each week. That’s horse squeeze. Get Chan out of here!

UNC may be 3-8, but six of their losses were by a touchdown or less - including a 17-10 loss at Virginia Tech. They’re the quintessential almost-there team this year - anyone who goes in thinking they will or should blow out this team isn’t paying close enough attention.

ya’ll have no good ideas for a replacement.
that fake kick is in every team’s playbook and i’m sure has been practiced many times this year, just wasn’t executed.
coach gailey has no control over his player’s fumbles which handed unc more than half of their points.
why would any coach want to come coach here when half the people in the stadium only show up to boo the calls his assistants make and the rest only stand up and cheer on third downs?
most of the people that post on this board have never played a down of football and the rest might have played in highschool. if you are not cheering on this team, please keep your mouths shut and let the players and coaches enjoy something they put their heart and soul into rather than bash not only the coaches but the young men representing the school.
when and if we beat uga this year, don’t go talk trash to your uga buddies because most of ya’ll are not fans just people that may or may not have gone to the school and may or may not be smart yet still think they have all the answers to a sport they know very little about.

Credit for this win has to go to the UNC coaching staff. All they need is a first down and they go ultra conservative. GT deserved to lose this one. Gailey will be gone after next week. My guess is he will not coach the bowl game.
GT will now either go to the Car Care in Charlotte or the Music City in Nashville. Blue turf is out and GT has already said they will not play in San Fran as they were just there 2 years ago. My guess is they will play an SEC team in Nashville.

I agree with the poster who criticized Knobler’s criticism of Gailey running Choice one more time at the end of the game. Why did he write that? The play was a no-brainer. There were 35 seconds left when they snapped it. They had plenty of time to spike the ball after the tackle. And UNC ended up calling two timeouts anyway. That’s a ridiculous criticism.
Why not criticize Gailey calling three consecutive direct-snaps to Choice? Once again, playing not to lose instead of playing to win. Let’s run three straight times and kick a long field goal. I’m sure that’s what Urban Meyer would have done.
I’m so tired of it. I just don’t know how much longer I can watch this lameness. The inept offense is just painful. It really isn’t any fun to watch. Fortunately, UNC is just a shade worse. These two teams deserved each other today. What a dreadful football game.
One thing I have to say about Chan Gailey is that I understand why he and Bond call the plays they call. It’s simple - they just don’t have a quarterback they can trust. But, of course, the fact that Gailey doesn’t have a quarterback is his own friggin’ fault. If you ask me, Bennett has the skills to be at least a competent quarterback. As it stands, he is somewhat less than competent - and not improving.
And why would anyone post that “Coach Gailey has no control over his players’ fumbles”? Give me a break. Teach ‘em not to fumble. Teach the offensive line to block so the quarterback doesn’t get blindsided. Teach the quarterback to get rid of the ball sooner, especially when he’s on his own two yard line.
I say keep Gailey until we have the right replacement. But holy cow this has been a frustrating season of wasted potential, and once again it all comes down to our underperforming quarterback. Bennett better have the game of his life against Georgia, or else it’s going to be ugly.

It certainly is frustrating to watch this mediocre Tech team. Why didn’t we have a better plan in place for who would succeed Ball?
We can only judge Chan by his results, which so far have been mixed. I say keep him until we have an opportunity to sign a really good coach. But lets not just ditch Chan without a real alternative. Another mediocre coach just isn’t going to cut it.
PS, to all of the UGA fans here, get a life. Just because your favorite school will give a degree to anyone who drives by slowly enough, doesn’t mean you need to trash on other school. All you Gailey supporters kill me. Do you guys ACTUALLY want to settle for five out of six 7-6 seasons? Is that ALL you want Tech to accomplish? To my knowledge, Ross and O’Leary got excellent reasults, i.e., 9 win seasons consistantly, and a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP with a helluva lot LESS talent. Chan has wasted Techs time and talent the past six years and judging by his past “performance” he isn’t going to get any better. Remember last years 9-2 start? We’ll as I recall, we could have finished 12-2, ACC Champs, first BCS bowl in 10 years, and finish in the Top 10, but AS ALWAYS, a Chan Gailey coached team CHOCKS and we LOSS the last three games of the season, INCLUDING a fifth straight lose to Georgia!!! “It isn’t the fault of coaches when players fumble?” Are you kidding? When Bennett was one-handing the ball “like a loaf of bread” and preparing for contact AFTER getting a 1st down — That is a DIRECT RESULT of poor coaching.
And exactly WHY do WE have to come up with a replacement for Chandler Gailey? Isn’t it enough that we stop contributing, stop going to games and/or BOO Gailey to FORCE THE ISSUE with this AD? A competent AD would’ve FIRED Chandler Gailey following HIS decision to PUNT AWAY the ACC to Grobe last year on 4th down with 2 min to play — And GT was DOWN by 3 points! If not THEN, how about following the complete 2nd half COLLAPSE against WVU last year in another humiliating bowl game loss?
I say let this “New Breed of AD” EARN HIS PAY by working the numbers, conducting an extensive search and interviewing until he finds the RIGHT FIT for a head coach at GT…He obviously knows what/who NOT to look for: Another Chandler Gailey.
This was an absolutely BORING game to watch. It was a game neither coaching staff wanted to win. These staffs should’ve shaken hands at the 50 after the game and then taken turns beating each other with 2 x 4s for some of the most incompetent, stupid, worthless, uninspired, indefensible, boneheaded, ridiculous and underwhleming play-calling that the ACC or even Div 1-A has seen this entire year.
I believe Chandler Gailey is an alien from the planet Inept in the Doofus System. Next week he’ll prove once again that he’s also a PLANT secretly working for the UGA coaching staff.
PREDICTION: In his final GT game next week, Chandler Gailey will STICK IT to the GT fans by handing UGA their most lopsided victory in the history of the series. Bank on it!

Mr. Knobler,
I respectfully disagree. Yes, it takes time to spike the ball, but they had enough time. Kicking the field goal on second down with 35 seconds left would have been the conservative, i.e., Gailey, move. I was glad to see him take a chance for once and get six more yards.
And what if UNC had had 15 more seconds? That 63-yard attempt might have been a lot closer.

If Nesbitt would play more reps, he would be starting by now. He’ll be the starter next year. And we beat a UNC team that played everyone tough this season. The UGA game won’t be that bad. In fact, I think it will be a 3 point game. Dawgs aren’t as mighty as everyone thinks. Home game and all is on the line. Gailey coaching what could possibly be his last game in a Tech shirt? These kids WILL be ready to play.
Coaching change next year? Bad idea w/ the carosel moving in warp speed. Miles to Michigan, Davis to LSU…Let’s just hire a nobody and see where recruiting goes from there. Stay smart and keep Gailey one more year. Dwyer, Donley, and Burnett could take us to the next level regardless.

We still have a chance to win 9 games this year for the 2nd straight year. Gailey would be the 1st coach to ever win 9 games in back to back seasons.
UNC maybe 3-8 after today but they’ve lost 6 games by 6 points or less. They lost to Va. Tech by 6 points at Virginia Tech and lost to Virginia by 2 points.
They’re are a program that has recruited well the past three years and are a program that is on the rise.

All you Chan Gailey haters need to understand he is executing exactly what Tech is looking for - consistency and an occasional 9 win season as called for your former AD. I am convinced Braine was following orders from further up the pay scale.
As a founding member of the Fans of Chan I must point out Chan has executed the Tech plan perfectly. Once again Tech is looking at a 7 win season, clearly the most consistent record in college football, punctuated by that 9 win occasional season Braine called for.
I’ll tell you, Coach Chan is doing exactly what the administration has ordered and anybody who thinks he is going to be fired is delusional.

The offensive line played hard the whole game with minimal holding calls (don’t get me started about the refs in the first quarter and NC’s draging down our defenders). Johnson made some good catches and runs. Even Thomas CAUGHT passes, which he ususally drops! While the defense hasn’t learned to stop the pass in the flats, Morgan Bennett played one hell of a game! He was the wide side cornerback in man to man coverage the whole game. He played extremely well. Did anyone notice we actually threw the ball over the middle…to the tight end no less.. especially on that final drive. Why don’t we do that more often? If we practiced it, maybe our DB’s would cover it when Tech is on defense. I digressed, since it is esier to whine then to study what happened yesterday, recognize the positives, and get ready for Georgia. Both Teams left everything on the field, and you want more? Yes, there is room for improvement…there always is.. but get behing the team or shut up!To Hell With Georgia and support the team…all of the players and coaches. Their job this week is tough enough.

No Chan supporter here (I hate the NFL mentality) but you can’t blame EVERYHING on him unless you’ve never coached football (20 years in high school here.) What I dislike about Chan is his total lack of creativity. I’m not talking about gimicks. I’m talking about: how do we beat a deeper and more talented UGA team next week? I hope I’m wrong and Bennett turns into John Elway with Calvin at wide-out. Don’t see it happening. However, let’s give Willie Martinez something to think about in the first half and keep the ball away from Stafford and Moreno: put Nesbitt in the wishbone with Choice, Dwyer and Cox. Try something different for Dodd’s sake!

Well Tech fans I told you so!(hate to say that). We manhandled a very good NC team a week after a tough victory over one of our main rivals, the Dukies. Now how do you like Chan and me. We obviously have the momentum going into the Georgia game. They will not be able to hang with us at Historic Grant field at Bobby Dodd Stadium. We own our home field. So lets all keep supporting Chan. I think he has probably earned an extension on his contract. And while I am talking good news at Tech how about our big wins at the shootout in Puerto Rico. We are beating top teams. The ACC championship is definitely within our grasp in basketball. So everything is wonderful on the flats and I see no problem in whipping Georgia this week and if things fall right we may get a BCS bid at Tech. D/R

RS,
If the coaches are teaching them not to make mistakes, then how can you tell? When you have a game like Tech had Saturday, doesn’t it at least raise the question in your mind that perhaps the coaches aren’t doing a good enough job of getting this team prepared?
I also disagree with you that the offensive line played well. I thought it was one of their worst games of the season. What game were you watching? I agree with you that Burnett played well. Moving him to corner looks like a good move.
And lastly, I applaud the optimism of those of you still clinging to hope for a nine-win season. I’d like nothing more than to see that, but what I am seeing on the field at North Avenue, and what I have seen on the field in Athens, gives me little reason to share that optimism.

You “fans” are incredible! I am so sick and tired of you bashing BENNETT! He has GREAT potential and you will eat your words. He has improved and you have a winning season! To “Kay”.. you are pitiful.. You Have a QB…SUPPORT him! He is doing exactly what he is told.. if you have a problem it isn’t with the player .. I would say you had better have a conversation with the “decision makers”. I don’t hear anyone slamnming Choice for his funbles .. yet you hammer the QB for his? WOW you folks are amazing! Homestly, I am a GT fan from another state and I am ashamed of you GT fans “for Life” .. You aren’t fans.. you are CANCER! Go Tech!! I know we will have a GREAT game against the DAWGS! I predict you will all eat CROW after Saturday! The Georgia Tech vs Georgia game seems to be the ONLY thing you can focus on.. how sad!

Bennett has great potential? That’s great to hear. Excuse me but this was game 10 of his redshirt junior season. Just when can we expect to see that potential turn into reality? Hopefully against Georgia. But if he continues to play the way he has so far, Tech doesn’t stand a chance.

Couldn’t help but notice 2 of the 32 Rhodes scholars this year were from UGA.
Anybody know how many Tech students with got in? Surely with the vastly superior academics there must be more than from UGA.

UGA actually won two football games yesterday. We beat UK in Athens and Tech beat UNC in Atlanta for it’s 7th win of the season. Tech cannot fire Chan after winning 7 games and taking you to a backwater bowl. Even if Tech doesn’t win another game this year, Tech will be 7-6 with a WINNING record and a bowl game, so Chan STAYS. Bravo to the two Rhodes Scholarships. That is great for them, UGA and our state, for sure.
I still think that academics isn’t something you want to argue. Rhodes is one indicator (and the last two from GA were Techies, I might add) among many. Now I’m sure you’ll google Rhodes Scholars and find out UGA has about 20 - my guess - and that Tech has 3 - that I know of. Still, that’s one indicator. Give me more.
This column is about footall. So, by your logic, since Tech is #1 in tackels for losses, then we must be better than LSU. Hardly. Our defense is awesome. Our offense is horrible. You need more than one indicator to make a program great.
For the record, I’ll take Nesbitt’s freshman mistakes right along with his ability to make plays. He should have triple the snaps this season that he already has. Gailey should have started conservative and won ND and Samford, and then progressively involved Nesbitt. We saw a glimpse of what can be from him yesterday. Now, Josh, just hold on to the ball - of course, don’t use Taylor as your mentor for that.

So Tech’s offense is horrible, “don’t steal my name”? Tech is averaging 391 yards per game. That is by far the best average Tech has had since 2001. It is one of the best in the ACC and better than Georgia’s 374.
How is that so horrible?
Tech and Georgia both have very good academics.

Congrats to tech on a nice win over North Carolina on Saturday.
I don’t think that tech should keep Gailey. as a Dawg fan, I would like it if you did, but I don’t think tech should settle for 7 win seasons year after year and a huge losing streak to UGA.
Other coaches have proven they can win at tech and there is no reason that someone can’t recruit top 20 classes most years and compete in an ACC conference that has it’s two best programs experiencing dreadful down years.
Looking forward to what is always a well fought game between tech and Georgia.

I was at the game, and saw a coach try things he doesn’t practices. The fake field goal a big mistake. On the touchdown to go up by eight,we sould have gone for 2 point it a 2 score game. That some of the small things Chan misses,he needs to let his coaches control the game. He is recuting well and hire Grif to handle the new players. That the only thing keeping his job. I do not beleive Tech sould settle on 7 wins. THe team is 8 to 9 win team. I think Bond is a good offenses coach,he need two years to get his players. The defense coaches are a very good group. I can see Gailey staying one more year, but the AD tells him to be only be a figure head are you gone early.I hope Fisher,Hatcher, and Johnson are ready to coach at GT.

REALITY+Chan will never win big at Tech. But Tech can’t fire Chan for more reasons then one. Bennett will never be a bigtime D-1 he doesn’t have it in him but Chan will stick with him instead of giving the other kid not Nesbitt a look. Because he is a good man there will always be people who will defend him. The only realistic hope fans of GT have is that after another two years of going 7-5 and 6-6 that Tech will be close enough to do a buyout and bring in someone to work with these talanted frosh that are on campus now. Trust Tech will have coaches wanting that job if and when it opens-trust me. Mullen or Strong at Florida Johnson at Navy Edsdal at Conn. The guy at Boise State Will Muschamp

Somebody who is not me posted using my blog handle at 5:38.
I am a Georgia fan. I didn’t go there and in my family there are roughly equal numbers of Georgia grads and Tech grads and some of us went to more selective schools that don’t have big time football. So I support the school and the program that is more to my liking, but I am not a Tech hater.
Unlike the imposter my take is that Tech can beat Georgia, although I don’t think they will. Tech’s stats this year are a little better than Georgia’s on both offense and defense. The difference is Georgia has found a way to win playing a much tougher schedule and we’ve gotten better as the season has progressed. Right now Georgia is playing about as well as any team in college football, and unlike Tech Georgia’s fans are all behind our coach and our program. If Tech won it would be a great accomplishment for the team but a significant number of Tech fans would be disappointed because they think a loss to Georgia would do Chan in.
Just curious, has Tech beaten anybody with a winning record this year other than Clemson?

Again, yardage is one stat. The ability to put points on the scorebord is probably a more important stat, wouldn’t you agree?
And points off of offensive mistakes have really hurt us.
The yardage and touchdowns are skewed by the Samford game.
As someone stated, Tech has only beaten 1 team with a winning record.
Let’s hope we add one more Saturday, but it is going to be tough.

Hey Alan, Go back and check your facts there buddy…George O’Leary had two seasons were he went 9-3 and 10-2. His first year (after the Bill Lewis disaster) was his only losing season, but even then he went 5-6. After his second year, he NEVER won fewer than 8 games for four seasons straight. In 1998, he won a share of the ACC with FSU,and went to the Gator Bowl. I don’t know if anyone has paid attention, but even though Gailey has been to bowl games the past five years, four of those bowls (Silicon, Humanitarin, Champs, and Emerald)didn’t even exist the year before. Also, to everyone’s suprise, Gailey is only 2-3 in bowl games…so I don’t understand this “attraction” to Gailey and the “hype” of these no name “cash in” bowls…I can’t wait for Gailey to be gone!!!

For the 10 or 15 people who listened to the basketball game on radio, it would have been nice to hear some postgame comments from Paul Hewitt. But he pulled a no show. Funny how he’s willing to ramble on (no pun intended) after a win but doesn’t have the class to visit with the radio crew after a loss.

So we get to a bowl by beating Notre Dame, Army, Miami, Samford, UNC, and Duke and I’m supposed to be impressed with that?
Gailey’s coaching job yeilded ONE win over a bowl eligible team. That’s pathetic. All over the country there are teams ascending from obscurity or complete non-existance and are competing for national championships:
USC was awful before Pete Carroll got there.
Georgia before Richt was wondering if they’d ever beat us again.
Kansas is number freaken 2
West Virginia, VT, South Florida, were unknowns not that long ago.
And GT is stuck with 7 win seasons by beating the worst teams in the nation. What an accomplishment.
Every year there are 3 goals: win the ACC, beat Georgia and win the natonal championship. In 6 years, Gailey is 0-18.

Richard:
You said a lot. The parallels of Gailey and Donnan are eerie.
Donnan was 2-3 against Tech, dropping the last three (even Goff had a winning record against Tech-WTF? Oh, I remember—B### L####).
His overall record was a tick over 2 out of 3, nothing to be ashamed of but not spectacular.
He took UGA to four consecutive bowls—the Peach Bowl and three lower-tier bowls.
His AD (yes, that would be Vince) loved him.
Never great, but always good enough to be a hard pink slip.
But they did, and look where they are now.
If UGA can get rid of Donnan and get Richt, we can do the same.

Great blog, Richard.
Gailey is 0-18, and I agree wholeheartedly with your belief that our goals should be to win the ACC, beat GA, and win a National Championship.
Why have a program if we are not trying to be the best?
Gailey is holding G.T. back. Our academic standards are not. There are more athletic high school students that excel in math and science than ever before; we need not take a 2nd fiddle in recruiting.
And even if we do, a great coach can win with less. There is no doubt that UCONN, Kansas, South Florida and Troy won games this year with less “blue-chip” talent than many of the teams they beat, so don’t give me that!
Chan must go!!

Agreed. Handing it off to Choice was actually one of the better calls made in the game. Horrible coaching calls include the “pooch” punt by Bell (honestly, what was the best case scenario for that. Either go for it or give it Brooks), trying to throw the ball from inside the 5 yard line (I don’t blame Bennett for that fumble, especially after he was almost sacked).
Good calls, however, included passes from both Choice and Nesbitt.

First let’s get the basketball out of the way. If Tech had beaten Winthrop it would have been a mild upset. Winthrop is a damn good program loaded with talent. See last year. GT is without two of their top 5 players although they are competitive. At best GT will be a bubble team for the NCAA but most likely NIT. Don’t set your expectations too high this season.
Let me guarantee you one thing. If Gailey loses to Georgia he will be let go. I don’t care if they have 7 wins (you know who those wins were against)or are going to a bowl west of the Mississippi. You see Rad is in the middle of a huge financial push with the PSL’s. By putting an inferior team on the field makes it harder to sell the season ticket PSL’s. Rad is hog-tied by a contract his predecessor left him with and he doesn’t like it. True, a new coach will take time as well but this current product is stale. Same scenario different year if they lose to Georgia. Tech will have to cough up about 4 million but at what point do you fish or cut bait. Paul Johnson at Navy is your man.

I still think Butch Davis probably cost UNC a chance to win by calling two timeouts and trying to ice Travis Bell from only 32 yards out and then intentionally leaves a 12th defender on the field just so Bell would have to kick the field goal twice.
If he saves the two timeouts with the way Yates was picking apart our secondary then who knows what happens. Just don’t think a 5th year senior in Travis Bell misses two potential go-ahead field goals of 30 yards.
I don’t think Travis should have been put in the position to attempt the first 30 yard field goal. Chan was playing for a field goal as soon as Jamal Evans had the big kickoff return to midfield. The play calling was super conservative, especially calling three direct snaps to Choice on three consecutive plays. I don’t understand why we weren’t trying to score a touchdown in that position, rather than settling for a field goal attempt. Even though the play calling was predictable, we were still gaining positive yards. Even if Travis makes the first field goal, you give the ball right back to UNC with plenty of time to drive down the field and set up a game winning field goal or possibly a touchdown. It seems like Chan didn’t learn anything from the Maryland game.

Get real - has Chan ever learned anything from a previous game? The answer is NO. He calls the ultra-conservative offensive plays the exact same way that he did 5 years ago, and expects the defense to save him.
That is why we need to replace Chan!
