Tech was good enough today
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey, Georgia Tech was not especially sharp Saturday, but the Yellow Jackets didn’t need to be to beat a bad Duke squad.
Taylor Bennett completed his first two passes, and looked like he might be in the mood to play as if he had nothing to lose as opposed to playing as if he has something to lose. That’s the way he’s looked to me all too often this season.
Then, he reverted, although his receivers again did not help him out very much. I counted at least five dropped passes.
This team is a lot better when Tashard Choice plays, even when he’s not 100 percent healthy. I don’t think he was today.
The defense? So-so. Duke can’t run the ball a lick, and Tech was hurt occasionally by the pass, but not bad.
The game wouldn’t have been this close if not for miscues, like Choice’s fumble and Bennett’s interception in the first quarter, the punt Duke blocked in the third quarter to set up a short touchdown run.
So Tech is bowl eligible, not that that will be enough to make everybody happy. Nor should it be enough.
Matt

Two offensive turnovers lead directly to 14 points. A blocked punt sets up another 7. Once again, our defense gives up a big pass for a score. SLOPPY. Sloppy equates to poorly coached. With the same talent and a decent coach, the score could have easily been 41-3.
I watched the UNC-NCState game. Our guys better show up ready to play next week. NC State was lucky to hang on. The good news is that with the loss today, UNC can’t get bowl eligible even if they win out, so they are now playing only for pride. If we can jump on them early, they are likely to fold quickly. However, knowing how things go under Chan Gailey, we’ll come out flatter than they are and keep them in the game way too long.
I still think that Tashard should have been held out of today’s game. He’s not healthy. Of course it’s pretty impressive to say that a kid that’s not healthy can run for 175 yards. We need him at full strength against UGAg.

Relax folks. Duke or not, a win is a win. If we could have had Duke and UNC early instead of BC and UVA on the road, we are likely a top 20 team with a 7-2 mark. I know, I know, but 7-2 late, who knows??
Choice looked great, and frankly the defense was tough all day, especially late. Bell is still awesome, and Durant should win every punting trophy available.
For the last 4 years I’ve noticed how Gailey and staff perform like an EKG. But rest assured, beating Duke won’t give this program any relief. Chan feels the pressure, and Chan ususally steps up when the pressure is on. No atta-boys this week or next. Choice, Tenuta, and company will be ready for ugaG. The D must close the middle and step up on the edge, the same way they did against Clemson to stop the kid from GA. He’s no Walker, but he is damn good in space, maybe the best in the country, but he can be stopped, i.e. Tennessee.
If Chan wins out, I’d keep him. I’d also consider keeping him just because, if he takes two of three to end. But if he drops the GA game at home with a healthy Choice, he must go, and he must take every coach except Bond, with him.

I just watched the “blackout game” on CBS. There’s a reason (numerous no doubt) that the team-in-black is ranked 10 (or higher tomorrow), while their opponent in two weeks is unranked. And their coach is one the ACC let slip away…

Seriously, Choice did not look hurt…just slow. Some wanted someone other than Choice to run more…he did but Dook pretty much held him in check. And, so many drops…that looked “catchable”.

Wow! Glad your not making decisions! 7-2 Mut butt. This team is pathetic, period. Zero play makers. Tashard is cancelled put by the coaching. UNC might beat us next week. UGA, well….this one will be ugly. They play with energy and heart. We play with………..Heck, I don’t even know. Zero passion, zero energy, zero leadership. Tashard cannot do it on his own.

GTender,
You moron it is the coaches responsibility to recruit the QB, it is on the most important position on the damn team. Also, keep in mind Gailey is an “Offensive Mind”.
Reality check, UGA is getting better, and after what I saw today, the game in 2 weeks will not be pretty.
The scary part, is that with Gailey at the helm the distance between GT and UGA will continue to grow. Richt has passion and enthusiasim that drives the players, coaches, and the overall program.
Gailey drives the hurst!!
Concerned Jacket,
IF a frog had wings it would not bump it’s a* when it jumps….we are not 7-2, we played the games, and because our team played flat and got beat we are not where we SHOULD be.
DRAD, Man up and fire Gailey and if Hewitt keeps his crap up, then uload him too. The program is coming to a crossroads….what are you gonna do about it?

Even though this year is not over yet, has anyone thought about next year? The Jackets lose a bunch of senior players and will probably be passed by UNC ( may lose to them next week ) who has a very excited fan base with Butch Davis as coach. UVA has passed Tech and is still a young team. Miami recruits better and will be back when they find a QB. I am not sure 2008 recruiting class is looking that great. I have not seen them play with unpredictable, loose, excited personality since McWhorter coached them in the bowl game v. Stanford a few years back.

Tech wins, and can still win 9, but all I see is fire Chan, can Chan, dump Chan. Okay, you’re the AD, who do you hire, or better yet try to hire?
You think Zook would leave Illinois? Want Fulmer if he’s fired? Franchione from A&M? Larry Coker? Terry Bowden? June Jones? S**, I think Ray Goof’s still available. Ain’t no big time coach coming to GT. Paul Johnson’s the best bet and what the hell makes him any better than Gailey. I’m sick of Gailey too. I’m sick of Tuneta’s inconsistent defenses, but I don’t want to be Notre Dame or Minnesota either.
No one coach has done more for this program since Dodd, than O’Leary and that includes Ross. But as good as he was for the program, he wasn’t nearly as good without the Fridge. All of them left, so that must tell you something about GT. The school lacks resources, alumni, fans, and money. Mark Richt is no football Lombardi, but he has the benefit of certain items that few schools have.
Tech will never consistently beat UGA, but there’s no reason they can’t consistently compete in the ACC. Gailey’s doing that now, but what proven commodity can take over next season and do the same or better. And don’t give me no mid-major coach or dusty D1-A assistant, like Jimbo Fischer or Brad Scott. If you fire Gailey, you had better go after someone with experience recruiting in the south and someone with a winning background at this level, like Houston Nutt or Tommy West. Otherwise, get ready for Bill Lewis part II.

“Concerned Jacket”:
The last time I checked, the GT/UGAy series was COMPETITIVE before Chandler Gailey came to The Flats. Of course everyone knows since your man Chan got here it’s “just another game”…
Competitive in the ACC with Chandler? Last year: YES…This year: NO. Coming off a W over the hapless DOOKIES and we’re now 3-4 in the conference. I’m glad YOU think that’s competitive. Maybe you can be a little more specific and explain exactly how GT was competitive against VT under the national spotlight?
Fans like you amaze me. Still trying to make a case for keeping No Top-25 Chandler. So you dump on the school, its “resources” and preach that no coach worth anything would ever come to GT. “Don’t fire him because we can’t get anyone better!” Well I don’t buy your BS.
If you want to be a “Concerned Jacket”, then you should be concerned about the HISTORIC fan base damage Chandler Gailey has inflicted upon GT. Just how many postings do you guys have to read about people REFUSING to go to another Gailey-coached game before you “get it”?
I do agree that GT now has fewer fans, dollars and “resources”…Since Chandler Gailey came to town, of course. And the longer he stays, the WORSE it’s gonna get. (Gailey’s Postulate)

Back from Dook: 1.)Get Nesbitt more than one series before junk time, and give him more than the sprint option and QB draw to run. 1 pass a game doesn’t make a QB improve. This isn’t the pros, giving a new starter every third series off isn’t a bad idea. 2.)Start Corey Earls against UNC. He runs such great routes and his hands are the best on the team. Bebe has got to start holding onto the ball 3.)Patchwork offensive line started out slow and came on strong in the second half (recurring theme around the team). Tuminello has fought thru injury all year. Even with injuries these guys keep pounding. 4.)Start Morgan Burnett at safety. Our best talent in the secondary should play more than he does, who cares if he is a freshman. Chan, that goes for every spot…. Put in the best players, not the oldest ones! Reese and Butler deserve a shot! 5.)Tashard Choice is the reason I have hope against UGAG. Not 100% but still better than most 6.)Michael Johnson is a beast. He is always pumped and he brings the swagger to our D that Joe A and Daryl Smith used to. 7.)Many GT fans there. We need to let the players know if they don’t quit on us, we won’t quit on them. Not even the can-chan people are against them. We all want what is best for GT in the long-term, but the opinion differs on how to get there.

I hate to say it, but UGA looks good, really good. Stafford is going to pick apart our secondary. GT allowed a 64 yard pass for a TD, against Duke, I mean c’mon, Duke?!?! UGA is going to spank us for the 7th year in a row. I just don’t think Tech has what it takes to beat them. With Moreno as a RS freshman and Stafford as sophomore, this losing streak could easily go to 9, maybe 10 games. I mean, c’mon, Tech struggled against a pitiful Duke team. They let Duke get 24 points. Just imagine what UGA can do. I hate UGA, I loathe that school, it’s a big joke of school (I know b/c I have a degree from UGA as well), but I know that Tech will have a hard team beating them, and I’m not looking forward to the Saturday after Thanksgiving. To steal a line from Pedro Martinez….UGA is my daddy, my uneducated, inbred daddy, but nevertheless still my daddy.

These are the mistakes that lost the VA game. They are the mistakes that can create a loss to UNC and are the mistakes that will cause a 50 point loss to UGA. Also, let me know when electrical engineers start making less than journalism majors. Another thing you put out there.

I was at the game - this was an ugly game that showed the lack of energy and leadership on this team’s offense. The team needs leadership on offense (preferably from a quarterback who doesn’t have the mental toughness of a teletubby - come on - how can a division 1 college quarterback dress up as the effeminate teletubby for halloween and continue to remain on the team much less start!).
Keep Tenuta and get rid of everyone else. I find it unreal that receivers can drop pass after pass and no one says a word to them - like they (coaches and quarterback) are afraid they are going to hurt someone’s feelings - further teletubby toughness. The quarterback throws a really bad interception and goes and sits on the bench by himself to cry it out. Where are the coaches? The mediocrity everyone talks about is rooted in a lack of energy and accountability from the coaching staff. It is alright to fumble and throw interceptions at Tech now. Just don’t hurt anyone’s feelings and we will all be ok(mediocre).

Our secondary had better step up this weekend. UNC can throw the ball really well and our corners have looked pretty bad the last few weeks. You can bet your butt that T.J Yates is going to try to go deep on the first series that UNC gets the ball. Our entire secondary better come ready to play.

INFALLIBLE FORECASTS
GA.TECH-NO.CAROLINA Tech’s running was pretty successful; ball control drained clock with great circumspection and prevented turnovers, but Tech scored only one TD. UNC’s passing attack connected repeatedly, sometimes spectacularly. Tech 13, UNC 21.
GA.TECH-GEORGIA Stronger, faster Bulldogs overcame tendency to discount Tech-UGA rivalry, swatting the Yellow Jackets in almost every category. Dawg defense was pumped, Stafford was Stafford, and Bennett was Bennett Tech 10, UGA 47.
At 6-6, Tech accepted undisclosed postseason bowl bid reserved for Emerald Bowl rejects, in effort to struggle to obligatory 7th win. Crystal ball clouded as to opponent and result.

UgayGrad, I’m so glad you take pride in that toilet paper degree from the “University” of Georgia, that just goes to show how much lower your standards are than mine. My degree came from your precious Terry college and it was an absolute joke. Unlike you, I have first hand experience from both schools, my views were not influenced by a 19 year old kid. Now quit posing as a dentist get back to your register, Wal-Mart isn’t paying you to read AJC blogs.

All… a couple of years ago, there was an AJC story that declared UGA SAT scores now higher than GT. School counselors started telling their students this “fact” without doing any research (one told me, and when I showed her the Georgia Board of Regents document, she was shocked because that is what she had “heard” from other people), and it has now settled in as “truth.” The article, after you got past the headline, stated that only in state students on the HOPE scholarship at UGA had higher SATs (but only slightly) than GT students who were also in state and on the HOPE. There are reasons for this anomoly that we don’t have the space for here, but it isn’t really that big of a deal.
The truth is this: Tech averaged 1328 total and UGA 1237 in terms of SAT in 2005. Let me tell you that is a significant statistical difference. That data is the Georgia Board of Regents (look up the report on line), not from some poorly written sensationalist headline.
Anything posted by any Tech or UGA fan about their nephew, next door neighbor, friend at the office, etc. is nothing more than anecdotal and doesn’t speak to the facts. One UGA’s nephew’s opinion that “Tech is a joke” doesn’t mean anything about the level of academics.
All of that said, the two football programs both were at a crossroads at the time they both hired their current head coaches. UGA sought a passionate visionary who had been at a winning program, and had proven as an OC he could make use of talent at the college level. GT sought a coach who has FIVE losses or more in EVERY season as a head coach since 1993 (1 loss in 1984 and 4 in 83 in 1AA). He is a coach who squandered talent at the Cowboys and really had no place to go, and Tech was pretty much a soft landing for him. They are both respectable people, but have led their two programs, who were both in similar situations (rich tradition hadn’t been consistently at the top of their conference, fans clamoring for success and championships) in very different directions.
I would argue that even for UGA, in the long run, it is better for Tech to have a strong program. Better strength of schedule might mean getting an at-large BCS bid if you don’t go to the SEC title.
So, I truly believe that the difference in the two programs is because of the coaches, and I believe it is time for him to go. It isn’t the academics (George Godsey was a masters industrial engineering student – the undisputed #1 program on the planet) or the fans (yeah, Tech has fewer local fans, but they don’t coach the team). It is the coach.

My dear reality check….
Your post is way too logical and includes too many facts for any ugay fan to understand or follow. Remember that you must use words that are at most 3 syllables for them to have a shot at understanding.

i know it seems wrong justifying what happened at the Duke game, but for those who dont know that game was never really close and Duke never had a real shot at beating Tech. Yes we came out slow and scored on the first drive in three plays. Tashard fumbles the next possesion (which he rarely does, but something that happens from time to time, sorry for him being human) and they scored off the fumble. they get the long touchdown on a busted coverage which also happens and i’ve seen happen a number of occassions to UGA this year, and they get a rare blocked punt that sets up another score. Our defense dominated and our offense moved the ball well with the dropped passes and a Tashard Choice who was obviously about 85% healthy. so dont think we really struggled because they put up 24 points. i recall Troy putting up 34 on the dawgs a couple of weeks ago.
i will say this, the Jackets will be ready vs the Dawgs next week. and i foresee a huge upset to crush any BCS at large hopes for the doggies.
Go Jackets!!!

“Right now, the one in Nasvhille [the Music City Bowl] would be a big-time game, going to play an SEC team,” linebacker Shane Bowen said. The Jackets are out of the running to represent the ACC in the Orange Bowl, and it’s a virtual certainty they won’t land in the Chick-fil-A or Gator. Similarly, the Champs Sports Bowl (Orlando) is a very long shot. Tech is tied with Florida State for seventh place in the ACC, and in the running for the Music City, Meineke Car Care (Charlotte), Emerald and Humanitarian (Boise, Idaho) bowls or as an at-large team in another bowl. Tech’s trip to the Emerald Bowl was a disaster in 2005, when the Jackets lost 38-10 to Utah. But the Pac-10 now has a tie-in, perhaps making a trip to San Francisco more attractive.

well Mr. Music City Bowl at best what exactly is your point, we’ve struggled and the prediction of what bowl Tech will be in has no baring on whats going to happend Thanksgiving weekend. the Dawgs do have weaknesses and they can be exploited
Go Jackets!!!
