It doesn’t take a rocket scientist …
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I didn’t go to Georgia Tech, my wife did, so the science I apply to football is all mine, and not, well, scientific. That said, I think the Jackets’ defense last night against Virginia Tech, while not impressive in total, was no more than half the problem and probably less than that.
The defense’s job is to get off the field. The Jackets didn’t, allowing Virginia Tech to convert nine of 20 third downs, and a fourth-down try. One might argue fatigue eventually was a factor (VT held the ball 37:25 to GT’s 22:35), and that would be valid, but the Jackets were much better in the second half against third downs (VT converted two of eight as opposed to seven of 12 and that fourth down in the first half).
The bigger problems for the Jackets in the second half were missed opportunities. There were a TON in the third quarter. Josh Nesbitt’s long pass to a wide-open James Johnson. That was a touchdown. The pass was a little long, and Johnson said he lost it as he looked up over his shoulder. The pass that Johnson caught and ran a while with from a scrambling Taylor Bennett? That was going to stake the Jackets to pretty good field position. Even if they settle for a field goal, those two plays might’ve helped the Jackets pull within 17-13, maybe 17-17. But Johnson was stripped from behind, and VT recovered.
When it looked like Sean Glennon fumbled and Anthony Barnes recovered in the third quarter? Nope. Officials ruled Glennon down before the fumble, and replay indicated they were right; he fell on his butt before the ball came loose. A couple plays later, a 71-yard touchdown to Josh Morgan with Jahi Word-Daniels right there.
VT coach Frank Beamer said after the game he felt his team was a little lucky in the third period. He’s probably right.
But the Hokies were better overall, and the GT defense shouldered its part of the blame. Improved against the pass in recent games, they gave up throws of 34, 40 and 71 yards, a huge completion percentage in the first half in particular, and a fourth-quarter run of 70. That last one in probably had plenty to do with fatigue.
Yet Tech’s offense was hugely to blame. The Jackets were going off the field with ridiculous ease, converting just two of 11 third downs and failing on a fourth-down try. Add six turnovers that put the defense right back on the field, and VT’s successful onsides kick so that the Hokies scored 10 points without GT ever even touching the ball, and you have a formula for disaster. That’s seven free possessions for VT. That’s absurd.
After a good start, the passing game was dreadful. Now, back to defense. Contrary to popular belief, coordinator Jon Tenuta has dialed back on the blitz at times this season. Sometimes, though, he doesn’t dial back when it’s easy to wonder if he should have.
The two best examples have been BC and VT.
Against BC, the blitzes were hardly a problem for Matt Ryan, in large measure because the Eagles were max-protecting a lot, sending out just two receivers much of the time. And Ryan was dead-on.
For my two cents, there are two primary ways to slow a passing attack: whack that snake’s head off (drill the quarterback), or lop off the tail (cover the heck out of the receivers). When you blitz so much, you’re aiming primarly for the former strategy. When that’s not working, as it wasn’t against BC, how about giving up a little of that idea and trying to cover more, send safeties to help the CBs more?
Last night, GT pressured Glennon pretty darned well, sacking him six times. VT has had problems protecting the passer all season, though, and I wonder if GT might have had similar success pressuring the QB with a more standard rush package? Beyond that, the Hokies were throwing outside A LOT (not all the time, but a lot). If the Jackets ever adjusted, it was not perceptible to me. Those wide routes are a dream if a DB picks a ball off. It’s usually six the other way. I kept waiting. GT came close only a couple times.
I’ve read a wide, wide variety of complaints about GT, and the one that strikes me as dumbest is the suggestion that GT can’t beat a team like VT because it is playing a bunch of kids who were recruited as two-star, three-star, or un-rated players coming out of high school.
But wait a minute. Philip Wheeler may not have had a great game last night, but he’s not only NFL-caliber, he’ll be a first-day pick. Guyton stands a good chance of being drafted. Jamal Lewis is going to play in the NFL, and figures to be drafted in the first three rounds. Darrell Robertson is currently No. 23 on Mel Kiper’s draft list for seniors. Michael Johnson finally played last night like everybody’s been waiting, and continues to be the most impressive specimen I’ve seen in college — in person — other than Garrison Hearst, Calvin Johnson, Marcus Stroud, David Boston, Andy Katzenmoyer, Champ Bailey, Jamal Lewis and Jonathan Ogden — in no certain order.
Adamm Oliver will be in an NFL camp next year, and Darryl Richard and Vance Walker may one day get pro shots as well.
On offense, Andrew Gardner’s going to enjoy an NFL career, Matt Rhodes might, Kevin Tuminello will get a shot and Mike Cox has pro written all over him. Tashard Choice didn’t play last night, and lacks the speed pros covet, but you all know how good he is. It’s too early to say about Cord Howard, but he has the frame pro coaches covet, and good feet.
Durant Brooks is a stud, although he’s not been as impressive the past month as we’re accustomed to, and Travis Bell is a much better than average college kicker.
There are young future pros on this team as well.
Perhaps Tech doesn’t have the depth of bigger programs, but the cupboard ain’t bare, either.
There are issues at WR and QB, and then you can argue about scheme, deployment, etc.
But this team is not so short of players it should be considered a foregone conclusion that it can’t compete with VT, even with some injuries. VT entered with injuries, and sustained more last night.
There is no one red herring here, and ultimately I don’t think science is what matters most. Everyone’s culpable, certainly coaches included, in this.
Bottom line from my vantage point: There’s enough fabric on hand, but the stitching is weak.
Matt

I’ve been, not a Chan Gailey supporter, but a proponent of the notion that program development and stability are more important than on field coaching style. Because of that I’ve been hesitant to openly want Gailey to be let go, even though I was not thrilled by his hiring in the first place. But last night absolutely turned my stomach and now my mind is changed. Chan Gailey needs to go.
College football requires emotion, including from the head coach. Gailey doesn’t have that. Plus he’s oblivious to what fires up his team. Jonathon Dwyer is an electrifying talent. Every time he touches the ball, something positive happens and a lot of times it fires up the crowd and his teammates. Last night was no different. Dwyer averaged 6.8 yards per carry. But for some reason Gailey saw fit to limit his carries to only 10. I know that when you start to get behind in games, the rushing yards usually go down. But it wasn’t like they were committed to Dwyer in the first half before things got out of hand. It’s a shame that we all can see the type of playmaker he can be, but yet we get spoon fed the ridiculous reasoning that he doesn’t know how to follow blocks, tries to bounce it outside every play and the company line on rookie RB’s…”he doesn’t do a good enough job in pass protection.” Blah, blah, blah. I’m sick of that bull sh.t nonsense. He makes plays, put him in the game and team him up with Josh Nesbitt. Bennett won’t win them any games. Nesbitt may be green and prone to mistakes, but I’d prefer to have freshman mistakes made this season, while we have nothing to play for rather than watch the awful offense that TB runs.
Gailey is out. It has to be inevitable now. Now the torture of trying to find a coach who will take GT where they need to go without ruining the recruiting that has improved the last few seasons. That may be a tougher question than trying to figure out why Chan Gailey’s teams are so up and down in the same season.

It’s not the stitching of the fabric it is the taylor in charge of the stitching. We are 5-7 over our last 12 games. Three of those 5 wins are over Army, Samford and a horrible Notre Dame team. It has never been more obvious that Chan needs to leave. If he had any class he would just resign and take a buy out rather than be fired, but I am sure he is as greedy as he is inefffictive.

Is Terrance Moore too old to be eligable as GT’s next QB? He’s slow, not very bright but hates Georgia, so he fits in with the last three QB’s who played on the flats (now there’s a fitting name).

The uniquely successful coach John Wooden of UCLA was an outstanding person who helped produce not only outstanding basketball teams and championships for many years, but outstanding “men” as well. Wooden was a “good” man as is Chan Gailey. However, first and foremost, Wooden was a good (and even “great”) coach. A head coach is not paid “the big bucks” to produce good men. That is a by product. A good coach is paid to produce a good team. In my opinion, coach Gailey has been and would probably still be a good “assistant” pro coach (in the booth), but he has fallen far short of being a good college coach. Just look at this season. There is so much parity in collegiate athletics, expecially in football, that the head coach also needs to have a noticeable competitiveness that can be seen by the players. Gailey is “calculating” but you see no competitive desire outwardly. Young men need to see that in their coach as a motivation factor that might be the deciding difference in a game. This is why a change is needed at Tech. Tech needs a modern day… Pepper Rogers. I for one say… go after the head coach at South Florida. He has built that football program into a success not only with outstanding administrative abilities, but he is a great motivator and sideline coach. I don’t even know if he is in the “mold” of a “Tech” man, but it’s time to break away from that “stogy” idea af being a Tech man and move ahead with inovation. He can recruit and he can obviously coach!!

Tech has the talent to be an above average team. We beat this same horse to death weekly. We should all know why Tech has not become the consistent team we thought they should be. I am not a scientist and I am not a veterinarian, but I do recognize horse manure when I see it.To play this bad after 10/12 days of prepartion is pathetic. Chan and his assistants need to go. I sent this to a friend earlier so not sure if all applies…
Should Gailey be fired? I’m so fustrated with him, not sure what i want to happen to him, but i’m fustrated. He’s done a good job recruiting over the past 2 years. I wanted him gone the first three years, and then ty willingham got fired and i wanted to see what gailey could do with his own recruits just like i felt Ty deserved. I felt that he needed 4, maybe 5 years to show us what he could do with his own recruits. Last year i thought that we had turned that corner. That this year would be different, but no this year it’s back to mediocrity with obvious talent. As mark richt said last week, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So I think Chan does a great job with the kids, and there might not be anyone better out there, but for him to stay i want to know what he’s going to do different. If he isn’t willing to change, then he needs to leave. If he beats UGA 125-0 though, I could put up with him for another year….

So Mark Bradley says “It was Tenuta’s fault” while Winklejohn says “Tech’s offense was hugely to blame.” Once again, only the FANS get it right: Chandler Gailey is to blame for that SHAM of a performance on the National Stage!
I can’t help but wonder if this is Gailey’s final parting “UP YOURS YOU GT RICH KIDS” shot since he prepared that team last night like he’s already been told “We won’t be needing your services beyond this season.”
I swear: Switch Beamer’s gameplan on Offense AND Defense AND Spec Teams with Gailey’s so-called “gameplan” and play EXACTLY the same players. End result would be GT 27 VT 3.
This was one game where Gailey didn’t wait until the final moments to be OUTCOACHED — He was outcoached BEFORE THE FIRST SNAP when Tinky Winky had a panic attack and said, “TIMEOUT! I have to go talk to PO about this!” LOL

Last night completely deflated me! I’m trying to figure out if I even want to go to the Ga game now. I have 5 tickets and I had just soon throw them away. Somebody, please convince Radakovich to fire Gaily now. We will be much better off without him. Pull Tenuta up while looking for another coach and see what he can do. If he can’t cut the mustard, hire someone who will. Bench Bennett and start giving Nesbitt a chance for next year. Doing something is better than doing nothing!

Let me make this perfectly clear…Chan Gailey sucks, our QB’s suck, our cornerbacks suck and we WILL lose to Georgia for the sixth year in a row. Bobby Ross and O’Leary got excellent results with A LOT less talent. Gailey has had six years to make us CONSISTANT contenders for the ACC and National Championships. It AIN’T working. He has no “fire” in him to win and he doesn’t have a “pair” to make us a threat and/or FEARED in the ACC let alone the National rankings. I’ll pack his bags…D-RAD you know what you have to do so please, please, please do it!!!

Matt, You are right about the talent. There is no question in my mind that we are more than capable of beating VT, especially at home. I didn’t see any lack of effort last night, just execution. When Glennon loaded up on that third and fifteen and heaved the ball down field, I was saying out loud, “just knock it down!” How many times has Jahi had the ball jerked out of his hands like that. I’m no coach, but this should have been addressed the first time. This is only one of many little mistakes we make week in and week out. We need a new direction. Play calling has Gaily written all over it, and I feel we’re wasting a good offensive mind in Bond. I just hope the kids don’t give up. But the last three games are anybodies guess.

On the radio last night, Wes and Van Note talked about how long Beamer had to get VPI turned in the right direction. But what was Va. Tech before he got there? Gailey took what was supposed to be a top-notch ACC job, in the middle of one of the great recruiting hotbeds and one of the biggest media markets, and this is what he has turned it into — a 24-point loss at home to a team missing jerseys and starters on national TV. Go, Chan, go. And keep on going. Right to somewhere else entirely.

I agree that Chan needs to go….but who would we be able to get? Now lets be realistic, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Michigan, Syracuse, Pitt, Duke, Arizona, UCLA, Arkansas, and Indiana are BCS schools that are going to either BE are MAYBE looking for new coaches at the end of the year. I think we are going to be 5th or 6th in that pecking order based on the amount of cash some of these schools are going to be throwing around. Considering we still have some financial concerns in the AD plus the amount we’ll have to pay the new coach and for Chan to go away plus who is going to be available to bring in leads to some tough decisions for Rad. Here is where he’ll earn his pay, go out on a limb, pay out for a mid major head coach or an unproven assistant or stay with the status quo and incur the wrath of fans and lower season ticket sales? What do you do? Who do you get?

Many people continue to parrot the mantra that “yes, the record isn’t so great this year but Gailey is a good recruiter”. What good does it do if one can recruit great high school players but can’t turn them into a winning team.
To wit, he insisted on staying with Reggie Ball for four years and didn’t develop anyone to back him up or replace, and now we’re stuck with Taylor Bennet who looked like a deer in the headlights last night.
Pu the “good man, good recruiter” out to pasture and bring in someone who can recruit, develop and motivate

Whosnext, I would say start with Jon Tenuta. Give him a shot. He is well known, here, and well respected. He can be head coach and give JB full reigns of the O. What do you have to lose? He can still run the D like Gailey is running the O, but you have a man full of p!ss and vinegar! I’m certain he can ignite some passion in a program. I’ve heard he doesn’t have the personality to be a front man, but I don’t give a rats -ss about a front man. I want a man who can put a consistently competitive team out there day in and day out!

Fire Gailey now. Ask Tenuta to fill in as HC and start looking around immediately. Bench Bennett. Take a good look at the supposed star QB recruits and pick one. Give them the rest of the season. Other than not losing to Duke, what is realistically left to play for anyway? Another low rent bowl?
That’s what I would do. (Years ago actually!)

I am sick and tired of hearing the crap about how many bowl games Tech has been to under Chan Gailey. Tech has not been to a meaningful game since he has been here. When are the Tech people who give all the money to the football ptogram going to say say enough is enough? It is unreasonable to think Tech can beat Georgia every year but how about once every three years? Surely there is some coach out there with some fresh idea Tech can hire. How about Randy Edsel or Paul Johnson? Trickdeal

Let chan go with respect, hire Randy Edsell as HC, hire Goose Godsey to coach/develop QB’s/asst. OC, and leave everything else the same. Don’t let G.Smith leave, he’s the master mind behind the great recruits, he knows how to find high level Tech student athletes. It’s time we bring in competent Tech men to make Tech great. D.Rad must stop ignoring the elephant in the room.

I can’t believe anyone would suggest Tenuta as head coach. He is too stubborn to change tactics and schemes that are not working. Tech has the worst secondary in division 1A. They do a great job strutting and trash-talking but cannot tackle or cover. Do they realize how stupid they look shaking their heads and strutting around when they’re getting used on every other play and down 17-3. Why doesn’t the coaching (?) staff rein in some of this behavior. It’s embarrassing to think they don’t know the score.

In regards to Gailey’s ability to recruit but not win big … I have but one name (cover your eyes, Georgia fans!): Ray Goff. No interim HC for Tenuta. The two best teams we have faced absolutely shredded his defense. He is overrated, and vastly so. Edsall would be a good choice. The best choice is Paul Johnson. Spend whatever it takes. Hey Trickdeal: I cannot believe you do not consider the Emerald Bowl, the Boise Bowl, the Silicon Bowl, and that second bowl they have down in Orlando to be significant bowls.
The Orlando people think so much of that second bowl that if you buy a ticket to the Citris Bowl, they give you a free ticket to the second bowl. Now that is caring.

From my perspective at the game, Bennett’s poor passing was primarily responsible for Tech’s defeat. I don’t have the stats, but I would be curious to see how many of GT’s drives ended on Bennett’s interceptions or incomplete 3rd down passes leading to punts. Isn’t Booker the backup QB? Why don’t we ever see him? How many interceptions and incompletions does it take to be demoted as GT’s first string QB? Look at Glennon for VT. He lost his starting job earlier this year and now is back better than ever. Also, the VT team didn’t crumble and fold with the changes at quarterback. This drives me crazy from an engineer’s point of view; if the players aren’t doing their job effectively, why not replace them with someone who will? I like using Nesbitt for a change of pace, but I’m ready to see what Booker can do running the offense.

If Chan Gailey is the man of great character he is purported to be, he would apologize for the state of the GT football program, resign his position, and forfeit the remainder of his contract.
As for the VT game, it was probably the single most embarrassing moment of GT football history: stolen jerseys, a halftime rap show, Teletubbies, and a miserable performance(after a bye week), all on national TV.

Since you bring up the ACC Championship Game, it’s worth mentioning what may in fact be Chandler Gailey’s most boneheaded coaching decision (so far):
It’s 4th down, there’s only 2 minutes left in the 4th QTR, we’re behind on the scoreboard 9-6, so it’s time to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps young men and go back out there and PROVE to everyone, especially yourselves, that WE — Georgia Tech — DESERVE to be playing for the ACC Championship and RIGHT NOW IS WHEN WE GO AND TAKE THAT GAME FROM WF AND EARN OUR TRIP TO THE ORANGE BOWL!!! Are you with me?!?! OK, VICTORY on 3…1, 2, 3 — VICTORY!!

I think Dan Rad owes them both a phone call too apologizing. To the guy who is worried about us losing our 6th in a row to UGA -I think it will be 7. The all time record in the series is 8 held by us - I’d hate to see UGA get that too. Chan has dug us in a hole that will take probably 3-5 years to get out of. How sad. What’s wrong with GT? It’s rather simple to me, I watch Tech play (win or lose) and before the game is over, I’m watching something else. Run, run, throw, whoops nobody can catch. Run some more, run some more, throw, whoops nobody can catch. The receivers are sissy, they drop the ball if any DB is near them. Who recruited this mess, oh wait a minute, Chan Gailey.

We will never be better than mediocre until we recruit and develop a good Quarterback. The final score and maybe even the outcome of the game would have been different if we had a good pocket Quarterback (not a scrambling QB; I mean a true pocket QB who makes good decisions and can throw accurate passes).
By the way, you could have said the same thing after almost every loss we have suffered through for the past 4-5 years.
We have solid players at virtually every other position and I respect Gailey as a person, but his approach is too consevative for college football. I would like to think he would open up the playbook and use a more balanced attack if we had a better QB which he could trust to make good decisions and solid passes.

Dump Chan!!! AS for last night, I am amazed nobody has mentioned the on-side kick in the 1st quarter. Who knows, a well coached team would have been prepared for that sort of thing, and if our team had been ready for such a thing who knows what might have happened.
Instead the defense had to go back on the field against a pretty good team, and that pretty good team never looked back.
Personally I am sorry the players are taking the boos personally. As has been stated earlier TECH has some good talent that a great coach could have turned into a great team. Too bad those guys are stuck with a chump named Chan!

HARDCORE-“we better not lose to uga, thats all i kno!!!!”
Great choice of “words”. At the end of that UGA game you will “kno”. His name is Knowshon.
Was it a whole 3 weeks ago that the nerds were on the UGA blog telling us “Choice for Heisman” and how they are going to crush UGA. Now you’re bailing on your coach, booing your team, leaving at the beginning of the 4th qtr., and selling your home seats to Georgia fans.
Who wouldn’t want to coach there? Better stick with Chan.

I am a Vt alumni who feels that you are wrong about Coach Gailey. Last year in Blacksburg, your team was terrific, YOU did win your division last year didn’t you?, Your bowl was one of the best of the non BCS games. You have great talent today, You came up against a wounded animal determined to overcome an embarrassment. Your quarterback threw how many picks? Your receivers did not catch or dropped how many balls?. The last time I checked, coaches are not allowed to throw passes, run or catch the ball, or make tackles. The sun does not shine on the same “dog” every day.

JACKETS are running from the truth. Taylor Bennett is a good kid but he probably wouldn’t start for 90% of the D-1 teams in the nation. Chan is a very good man but he won’t ever be a great coach. The minority Tech (goodie-goodie two shoe)fans hide behind the fact that these are good people which they are. But the truth be told being a good person is not enough in today’s society. People want to win. It’s time to play Nesbitt/Booker and maybe look at Strong DC at Florida, Nix at South Carolina, HC at Boise State, Foster at Va. Tech, HC at Connecticut. Tech can win!!!!

I’m deep in the blog, so I doubt I’ll be read this time…but what gives….
I was there last night. Tech Nation is understandably frustrated. When things go wrong it is usual to look for a scapegoat.
From a “political” standpoint, if I dare to use such a word, a change at the helm may be in order to renew enthusiasm that seems to have flagged in light of disappointing performances…some unexpected and others hard to excuse.
Change doesn’t demean the character of those let go, but it is a reality in life and any profession.
I think Coach Gailey is a total class act as a human being. A man of integrity and worthy of respect.
That said, Tech truly needs a younger coach (say in early 40s) with a “fiery” attitude and a sense of showmanship or promotion.
In a city like Atlanta, in the heart of SEC-land, you have to have some personality to set you apart.
Of course, you have to win too. Tech has the resources and foundation to win…and win big some years…and always to be “in the mix” for the ACC Championship until late in the year. For anyone who doubts this…two words: Wake Forest
By the way, Wake is “in the mix” again this year, proving the naysayers wrong who said they were a “fluke” or one-hit wonder. And they’re doing it with players, on balance, not so talented as the ones on our roster (us being GA Tech that is.)
It can be done.
In the end, I’m not paid to make the decisions, but I hope those who are will consider thinking along these lines when the time comes to make those calls after this season is done.
In the meantime. Man up Jackets! Go get’em in the last three games. Don’t concede nuttin’ to no one!

Tech looked like it was scrimmaging last night thinking the real game was this weekend. The defense wandered around like they just woke up and the pace of the offense made me afraid we might have to give the television time up to the Saturday noon game around the fourth quarter. “For you just turning in from the finish of the Va. Tech Ga. Tech game we are 10 minutes into Wake vs. Boston College with the score tied.” I have watch two SEC games in person this season and they go about their business of playing football entirely different from us and it starts with the personalities of the coaches. There is a lot more to coaching football than x’s and o’s.

GT was unable to fill Grant Field for a nationally televised Thurs night game against a conference opponent (ranked #11), even throwing in a halftime Rap Show, parking passes, pizza, drinks and (WOW) TWO coupons from Rocky Mountain Pizza…We’re only talking about some 55,000 seats.
For the uninitiated, this isn’t the result of FANS who don’t love or support their SCHOOL. It’s a direct result of how that school’s Athletic Dept and Head Football Coach have treated the FANS. This is a free market economy and people make their own spending decisions every day.
If the product on the field is of consistent high quality, then demand takes care of itself and will likely outstrip available supply. Of course if the public PERCEIVES that an INFERIOR PRODUCT is repeatedly placed on the field, well…They choose to spend their disposable income elsewhere (and rightly so).
I remember in the early 80s, we routinely went to Fulton County Stadium and watched the Braves from behind home plate, sometimes with nobody else on the same row. I also remember the lines of people wrapping around same stadium just trying to get playoff tickets when they became consistent WINNERS in the early 90s.
Supply and Demand…Always has worked and always will. However, you NEVER “stick it to the customer” during a period of decreasing demand. This new AD at Tech presented Administrators with a “plan” that ENDED the traditional point system and basically said you will now PAY for the privilege to PAY (once again) for Season Tickets.
While none of this is necessarily news, last night was actually a key event for the future of GT Athletics. The VT game should’ve been one of the first games to sellout months ago, even without all the party favors (and DR knows this and is still at a loss for words to explain why it didn’t). The fact that it didn’t and many of those in attendance (supporting their school) were walking out the exits in the 3rd Quarter can’t paint any clearer picture of FAN DISSATISFACTION with the product offered for consumption…Although openly BOOING the head coach is also a clear audible signal.
DR may or may not understand this yet…I think he begins to believe his own positive spins on everything. Chan Gailey definitely doesn’t have a CLUE about this, which is a parallel to just how out of touch he is during a game with what is and isn’t working, who is and isn’t performing, adjustments that should be made, etc. Clueless is actually an understatement.
Gailey said Friday he didn’t hear the boos and wouldn’t talk about them with his team.
This is TYPICAL Chan Gailey and WHY he will never be successful coaching any sport. Successful coaches understand there is a triangle between coaches — players — fans. With Gailey it is a line: coaches — players. If a player is unhappy about something, Gailey wants to hear about it and resolve it. But when some 20,000 home field fans openly express their displeasure, Gailey “doesn’t hear it”.
While coaches don’t HAVE TO recognize and even respond to fans…The smart and successful ones ALWAYS DO. They understand that the 3 points of the triangle must — above all else — remain in harmony with each other. When ONE point upsets the balance, failure can be predicted with high confidence.
Gailey’s PLAYERS did him in as head coach of the Cowboys, and since Gailey failed to recognize and correct the situation, JJ did the right and only thing he could do by showing him the highway.
At GT, it’s the FANS (who have been incredibly forgiving of Gailey until now) that will bring about his downfall. While this appears obvious on the surface, DR is faced with his own mystery, wrapped in an enigma.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize Tech Athletics is in FINANCIAL CRISIS right now. Short-sighted decisions were approved that have both immediate and long-term consequences. When a company’s product suffers an extreme reduction in demand, they either change the product, its pricing, its marketing or even its distribution…They can also stop making the product or just go out of business.
What will DR do with Gailey? DR saw the fans leaving in droves. DR heard the BOOS that Gailey says he didn’t hear. DR knows what a consistent high quality product looks like on the field — And he sure didn’t see the right one last night. The clock is ticking faster now that the egg was laid for all to see.
This is the same DR who was openly cheering Gailey when he returned from his NFL Interviewing Tour last year. Having a guaranteed contract through 2011 is an incredible obstacle to the future financial well-being of GT Athletics.
Having a guaranteed contract through 2011 is the reason WHY Gailey does whatever he wants, listens to nobody else, has no idea what it means to actually have to perform in order to play and is completely oblivious to his role in the current financial crisis. In fact, ask him and he’ll tell you that he couldn’t care less if NOBODY showed up to watch them play. It’s not his “problem”.
While this makes no sense at all to the average person, Gailey is not average. He is in a class by himself. When he says he doesn’t know what’s wrong or he would “fix it”, he’s telling the truth. In his eyes, his offense should be putting up 30+ points per game. And believe me, he will stubbornly cling to it until it does, and won’t dare change a thing. But of course, you’ve already seen this on the field.
GT will lose 2 of its final 3 games because of this alone. And 3 out of 3 is not a stretch. If your opponent knows what you’re going to do and you make little effort to fool them, then you end up with a result like last night. Beamer is a coach who enjoys exploiting other teams/coaches’ weaknesses. He could’ve easily tacked on 2-3 more TDs if he desired. But he doesn’t like to kick another coach when he’s down, since he’s been there himself.
Sorry for any typos. Got to go. Stay tuned.

Two different people see two different things. Either the NFL has gone down or Tech has gone up and is loosing with all this talent. To me the two big problems are and have been for sometime is no steady playmaking QB who can pass and no dominating, physical offensive line. And maybe a third, without a pass rush we are no match with a good passing team so we need better coverage personnel. 6 turnovers, an onsides kick and we still only gave up 27 points so the problem is on offense where we are settling into the normal latter part of the national rankings. After watching some of the highlights again it appears the offense is not focused and working on cylinders and really how to utilize people the best. It’s still the little things a dropped passed here and there, no scrambling by the QB to buy time or two look for a checkoff receiver and too much reliance on one offensive player every year.

well said “name and address withheld”…….i think you have been blogging your points over the past few years, perhaps under other withheld names (haha), and nothing at GT has changed……however, i believe that the tide may finally be turning as far as the HC goes and hopefully, what should have occurred years ago, will happen this year as chan is shown the door……unfortunately, i think that Drad, our esteemed AD, may also be on his way out and headed back to LSU ( i think they have a job opening at his former employer) and thursday’s big flop and all the no shows/early departures probably sealed it for him……..and if so, that may complicate things since GT’s athletic dept and the administration seem to have trouble multitasking….ie, finding a new AD and a new HC may prove too daunting and chan is saved again and his band of focer’s play on……..

Yes “Name & Address Withheld”, that was an excellent post. I’ve been a Chan apologist, not a supporter, but an apologist but the game Thur night sealed it for me. From the very first play, calling time out, after having 10 days to prepare, it was obvious. This team was not prepared to win, not even to compete. Chan will say the same lame crap, “we’ve still got a lot of things to accomplish this year”, the team will go and beat Duke and UNC because we have better talent, then we will get waxed by UGA and once again Chan will finish 7-5 and GT will get invited to some lame bowl. Chan supporters will again point out that he’s never had a losing season, that he’s always gone to a bowl game, that he’s “a fine man”. Well, a fine man doesn’t equate to a great football coach. They can be the same, look no further than Athens for this example, but a great coach doesn’t have his team embarressed on national television…again.
It’s got to be over now. DR must see things as “N&A Withheld” and Chan must go.

A $5 increase per ticket should cover Gailey’s paycheck next year. I , along with most Tech fans would gladly pay this to move Coach Boring out of here and bring in someone that is excited about playing agressive college style fun football. I’ll take Tenuta as HC as he would hire an OC and leave him alone to run the offense. Tech is 5-7 the last 12.

Guys and gals it was very obvious why we lost to V.T., Telle Tubby sux as a q.b. The last 4 yrs. have been a nightmare at that position. Its time to put the little sissy on the bench and let Nesbit play. Remember when Joe Hamilton first came to Tech? He made alot of mistakes but ended up as one of Techs alltime best Q.b. He started as a freshman. Chan let Nesbit play. The season is lost. There’s no way we beat UGA or N.C. tarheels with Bennet at Q.B. Two of the interseptions were unexcusable. Three steps back and just sling it without looking. One time there were 4 deffenders around the rec.,and the one near their goalline the DB was in front of our rec.. It looked as if Bennet was just scared. The sad part is even as bad as the defense played in the first half they played good enough for us to win. The main problem in the first half was John Tenuta’s inability to make an easy adjustment in the secondary. All Tech had to do was to play tighter coverage on the corners. It took him until the second half to do this. On the long TD the DB had great coverage but just didn’t make the play. Another thing: why in the **ll can’t our coaching staff see how special J. Dwyer is? He should have Not only started but he should have carried the ball 20 plus times. And where was he on the short 3rd and 1 play? He plays the game like it has to be played. With alot of emotion and desire, unlike our so called QB Bennet. The peices are there for us to have a very good offense, but the missing link is at QB. PLAY NESBIT CHAN.

Why doesn’t Dwyer get more playing time? The guy has a great yards-per-carry average. Barring some disastrous injury, He will be the greatest GT running back of all time. What’s the reasoning behind not playing him? Let me give you some background/info about JD21. He ran for 1800 yds. two years in a row while at Kell High School. So by Wheeler High School being in the same region, I saw him play twice in person. I will say this: * People saying he tries to bounce everything outside are full of BS*. In the two games I saw him in high school, he had to break tackles just to get back to the line of scrimmage and then he would break insanely long runs repeatedly. He plays physical football, did anyone see him annihilate that Hokie defender on his first run. And don’t say he can’t handle the load of carries, he was the only offense on his team in high school, and he still would have stellar production with 35 carries while in high school. Enough abou the physicality though, he’s the best big play threat at running back that Tech has had in my life time (1990-current). All-in-all what idiot wouldn’t give him at least 15 carries a game this year? You don’t have to worry about the pass protection issues because it has become clear to me that GaTech is not destined to have a good quarterback under Chan Gailey.( I almost wish Reggie Ball were back here after what Taylor Bennet showed me Thurs. night.). So here’s what the plan should be for the rest of the season once Choice gets healthy: Give Choice 35 carries and when he needs rest give Dwyer some carries. Attempt no more than 10 throws a game. Opposing defenses will be so tired of tackling Choice and Dwyer that they’ll be laying down by the 4th quarter. But Gailey to stupid to listen to mine or anyone else’s thoughts on the subject anyway.

I don’t agree that Chan is a bad coach. I do think he is a horrible judge of talent. There is no excuse to play Evans in front of Dwyer. So maybe Nesbit is not ready, how about Booker. He has yet to set foot on the field yet was good enough to be a top recruit of Auburn. After what I saw Thursday, I would try someone else even if I am wrong. Bennett should not see the field again this season. He is definately not the answer so look for different answers. Be creative, but of course we are talking about Chan “let’s drain the clock” Gailey. We need some new blood, lts start with Quarterback and then the coach

That being said, the VT game is the 1st game I’ve ever left before the 4th quarter even started. Last time we played VT on a Thursday night Reggie Ball (aka Chan’s adopted son) at least waited until the last minute to blow the lead. Chan sucked then, sucks now, and will always suck as a coach. He couldn’t coach his way to the top of the SoCon if he had Tech’s roster at Georgia Southern this year.
4th and two in their territory= A go for it situation when you’re down by a bunch.
Time out before the first snap after a week off= poor prep/ poor coaching.

Agree with most everyone about Gailey. He has no fire under him and you never see any emotion when the camera is on him. He might be the most emotionless coach in D-1 today. Whatever happens will happen and we will have nothing to do with what DRad decides after the season is over.
I got to see my other team, Air Force, run all over Army today (437 yards on the ground). Chad Hall broke his career high (256 yds), which he set earlier this year with a 275 yard effort today. This kid is amazing and will stick his nose anywhere and pop right up (BTW, he played at Wesleyan HS in Atlanta). What a great atmosphere to watch a game too with a sellout crowd just over 46,000. At least their coach, Troy Calhoun, is in the game. He got a sideline warning today after running onto the field about 20 yards yelling at an official.
During the game heard that Navy took down Notre Dame in 3OT breaking their 43 year drought. Air Force travels to South Bend next week. Here’s hoping for a service sweep of the domer’s.
Maybe Tech can close out the season strong the last 3 weeks.

That game made me sick the other night. I think alot of our mascot, but when he came up to me the other night I wanted to punch him in the face. I know that it is not his fault we lost, but I was disgusted that I paid money to see that and the BC game. I ain’t saying we should have one either one of them, but we could have at least showed up. Radovich has alot of decisions to make. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I don’t plan on going to the another game as long as Gailey is coaching. I am tired of his excuses. We haven’t had an offense or qb since he has been our coach. The games we have lost our usually when our defense has been off. I think this is a program that is in denial. Let’s call it like it is. I hate georgia. I pull against them every game they play, but if it takes them blowing us out, and having more fans at Bobby Dodd to get Gailey out of there, I Say GO DAWGS.

I agree in part and whole with “Name and address withheld”. I notice the great coaches leave us and the not so great ones stick around. Ross and O’Leary even Ralph showed blind men this program has upside potential. College coaching has always been a little like the pro at the country club. A large majority just wanted to be tennis or golf bums and this was a way to pay for it. Every once in a while a Spurrier comes along that pushes the envelope, rocks the way things are done. Beamer did an onside kick that pretty well reversed the game Thursday night. These kind of coaches got into the game because they love the competition. Miles runs the ball on fourth down, throws a pass for a touchdown when a field goal was the political correct thing to do. Even Richt the preacher, tells his guys to let it rip after the first touchdown. Who was taking for reality there would be a first touchdown, but Richt put it in their heads there would be. Any one of these coaches and many more like them would have lost their jobs if the calculations were misread, but the victory was more important than being on a rich man’s welfare, being safe in a overpaid job just keeping the members happy by being out of sight. I often wonder what great observations Gailey has about the fan base at Tech. Not too deep inside he must think we all are fools, and wishes we would settle for what he settles for. If I haven’t seen two other coaches prove that wrong I might drink the koolaid myself.

Stayed to the very last minute to support the team, NOT Chan. This was one of the worst coached games I saw under Gailey and believe me I saw way too many. There was never so much talent at Tech, CJ being the exception. Got humbled by Virginia, Maryland and VT. The time out BEFORE the first play was already a bad omen. What the heck have they been doing the past 10 days, playing dumb games on the computer? The players get a free ride at Tech, so show up in class and on the field!!! Is this too much to ask? I think the time out before the first play was run Thursday night is related to the fourth down pass in the stands where Ball forgot what down it was against Georgia two years ago. Different players, same results. Hell different assistant coaches, same results. Bobby Dodd was one of the greatest game day coaches to ever coach this game. What Dodd, and I knew him personally, could do was communicate. With all that Tennessee upbringing thing going with him, he had no problem expressing himself. He had one of the best senses of humor I have ever seen, too. I think Chan has trouble with all that kind of stuff. Bobby Dodd had one of those Paul Newman personalities,”rules in a knife fight?” and even though he was country as Hank Williams he could charm the bark off a tree and be as cunning as a fox. He would almost be giggling when he drew up one of those lonesome end plays or third down punts. Beamer’s onside kick the other night would have got his approval.

Our current QB is worse than our former QB. Our coach does not realize that his 2nd best RB is Dwyer (who will be better than choice by the time he’s drafted in the NFL), and out best receiver is Thomas. James Johnson and Greg Smith can’t catch or get open. Our secondary, once again, can’t cover or tackle anyone. What the Hell?!

I don’t get worked up when we lose to a team that’s clearly better than us if we execute well and play to our best ability.
It’s when we look like the Keystone Cops on the field and lose a close game to inferior competition or get blown off the field by an opponent on our level that I have a problem.
I’m 24 years old and going gray. I’m 90% convinced that Tech athletics are the primary cause. I just want the team to win when we should and play hard and execute every game.
In the end, we’re talking about a sport played by 18-22 year olds making split-second decisions under extreme physical duress (to paraphrase Sunday Morning QB). I suppose a few mistakes are inevitable, but to completely blow the game (ala Taylor last Thursday and Reggie in half of his games ever) is still unacceptable.
