With/without Choice, Jackets must buckle up
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Chan Gailey left open, if only slightly, the door for Tashard Choice to play Thursday night against Virginia Tech, suggesting again that he’s recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery quickly, jogging, and, well, being Tashard.
If the decision were left entirely up to Choice, you know he’d play Thursday. Gailey jokingly said Tuesday that, “you know he’ll lie,” a reference to Choice saying before the Virginia game that his hamstring was good to go only to last four carries or so.
Whether Choice plays or not, the Yellow Jackets probably can’t afford to give up uncommon points, like by special team return, or turnover return, and Virginia Tech is very good at that. Ask Clemson.
The odds of scoring a lot of points offensively against Va. Tech are not very good, although LSU put a major whipping on them way, way back in September. But the Hokies clamped down on Boston College for 57 or so minutes Thursday night before Matt Ryan amped up his Heisman campaign. And BC may be the No. 1 team in the nation, as Matt Rhodes suggested Thursday. (Odd stat: Va. Tech is 13-3 in ESPN Thursday night games, all three losses — and three wins — coming against BC).
If the defense clamps Va. Tech down (and the Hokies’ offense is uncommonly pedestrian, as even their running game is well off its annual pace), but the Hokies get points on special teams or off turnovers, then Ga. Tech’s odds decrease big time.
It could be that whichever team gets the most points from special teams, or perhaps defense, wins this game.

It was raining cats and dogs the first half of the Va Tech game which hurt BC’s passing attack. I think Ryan was sick too. They scored 14 points in 2 minutes when they needed it which tells me they left something on tape that Ga. Tech can pick up on. It is going to be tougher because Va Tech lost but this is not the Michael Vick or even Marcus’s era.

Matt,
I think this could very well come down to yet another battle of defense and field position (see GT-CU), with one or two big plays making the difference.
We’ve been pretty good about protecting the ball, for the most part, this season. A freakish interception and a muffed punt did us in up in Charlottesville while untimely penalties and dubious playcalling was the difference against Maryland. A sloppy 1st half (save the first couple of possesions) vs Army was turned around after the halftime festivities, but that was a costly win.
Ball security will be at an even higher premium Thursday night with a revamped running attack, as well as preventing the big pass plays that have been a bit too frequent against Jon Tenuta’s secondary. Morgan Burnett has looked great and made some key plays in nickle D, but he’s still not in-tune enough with the 1st/2nd-down schemes to be an every-down player.
As it was last year at Lane, getting presure on Glennon will be key (assuming Taylor doesn’t get significant time….which he very well may). Sean Glennon is not a BAD quarterback, but his pocket awareness is terrible. I can’t recall seeing a drop-back passer at a major program take as many sacks from FRONT-side pressure as Glennon. We all know Jon likes to sell out to man coverage in order to run so many blitz packages, and with VT likely playing musical centers I think we can keep the pocket time window short enough to not get burned over-the-top.
That said, we have to keep our own pocket protected long enough for Bennett to find his second and third options. With our tailback options limited and some banged-up bodies in the line this is going to be a tall task against Foster’s front 7. Unless we can hit the back or TE on some drags underneath or the flanker on the quick out we’re going to be facing 7 and 8 in the box all night.
Last year, we were actually able to beat Beamer Ball at his own game….special teams. I think we will play VT at least even in this regard again Thursday night.
My prediction…..GT 20, VT 10.
ps…you’re doing a great job, Matt. Just follow doctor’s orders from now on. Do NOT discontinue your meds without consulting him first.

As much as i want a win, if Gailey lets Choice play he should be shot. That would be jeopardizing the young man’s future and he has already given enough to this program without giving a body part.
Why Dwyer is not starting is a little confusing, but we all know Gailey is loyal to senoirty to a fault. I would like to see a ton of Nesbitt and Dwyer, I think a moble QB would really catch them off guard and would help a depleted running attack!

Whether Choice plays or not, we can’t put all of our eggs in one basket. Tech has enough talent at tailback to run the ball quite well, providing the blocking is done properly.
If I were Bond in coming up with a game plan, I would run the Big Bull quite often. This will relieve pressure off Dwyer & both Evans, who are good backs. I would also throw to Peek our tight end more than normal.
Taylor has to be on the passing game. He can’t have receivers open and overthrow, or throw behind them. But they in turn have to catch the ball. No excuse why we can’t run the table. Play them one at a time and don’t look forward to next game. I would be happy with a 9 & 3 record.

I think it would be cool to have Nesbitt try his hand at Tailback in some I formations. It will give him a chance to run behind the primary blocking point of attach rather then having to quickly find the hole when he’s in at Quarterback. Of course we would have to run when he’s lined up there, but the defense pretty much knows he’s going to run when he’s in at quarterback anyway. Maybe being practiced this week?

This game is really winnable. Our defense can manhandle that offensive line and really create havoc like last season in Blacksburg. The thing I have a problem with is why start Evans over Dwyer? Dwyer’s proved himself already this season and ran really well in the backup role against the Virginia defense (15 carries, 75 yards). This whole seniority business is non-sense, what happened to playing the best players at any given time? This isn’t high school football, start Dwyer.

No question Tech is a better team with Choice on the field, but our fans are very positive about our chances Thursday. We’re starting to get used to the personality of this program which involves a lack of focus when things are going well and somewhat surprising performances when things are not going well.
I don’t know all the numbers, but when Tech is favored the results are generally not very good. However, this team loves playing as an underdog and the record reflects that.
The only surprising thing for me is that with both Choice and Grant on the shelf for this game that Tech is a 3 point favorite.

Dwyer has proven himself as having the potential to be a great runner. He has not proven his potential to be a great blocker, IMO, which will be the next step in his progression. Getting the “Start” doesn’t mean much. He will still get plenty of playing time and plenty of opportunities.
I think the kicking game is going to be a huge factor in this game.

Who cares if we lose?
That makes it more certain Gailey is not on our sideline next season.
The problem is if we beat VT and Georgia.
Then we very well could be stuck with that bozo for another season.

This is an exciting game. Evans and Dwyer have an opportunity to shine and start their legacy at Tech. Will this be the world’s introduction to the new #21? It could be Dwyer’s party and we’re all invited. Or, could Little Jamal steal the show? Who know’s? I can’t wait, Give em’ Hell Tech!!!

I was on the Dwyer bandwagon, but last weekend he couldn’t find a hole to save his life (and they were there). While Nesbitt is impressive, he also fumbles the ball about every third snap (but everyone loves the back up - even if they fumble). I’d like to see a good mix of Evans and Dwyer, very little Nesbitt, and no receiver drops. Still, VT will be tough to beat.

All I really know is this is a nationally televised Thursday night game. There’s going to be a half-time show with Big Boi. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a flyover. It’s going to be a huge throwdown, and with an extra week to prepare, Tech is going to show up big time. The students are going to go nuts.
Just like Miami, Tech now believes they can beat VT after last years win in Lane stadium. GO JACKETS!

Nesbitt isn’t the only one that has a tendency to fumble too often. You’ll recall early in the regular season as well as in spring and summer scrimages Dwyer also tended to fumble; and unfortunately they usually came inside the red zone. JUST what Beamer ball capitalizes on best. I’m VERY worried about this game.
For the life of me I can’t figure out how we end up on the good side of a 3 point spread. I don’t think the odds makers have read about Grant and Choice.

Richt puts talent before seniority (he’s a redshirted freshman). That’s why we can’t compete with the big boys year end and year out and I read all about how we are trying to “market” this program. HEY, HOW ABOUT UTILIZING YOUR “TALENT” INSTEAD OF TRYING TO MAKE SURE JAMAL’S FEELINGS DON’T GET HURT! DWYER IS THE FREAKIN MAN! I also agree with others that say we should let Nesbitt play more. More Dwyer and Nesbitt. That guys can throw AND run. Looks like a mini-Vick….except without all the police..and shackles…and all that. Come on Gailey, put the donuts down and get us in the game here!

The Jackets will take VT to the woodshed. VT is the most overated team in the country; they always get a hich ranking in the AP because they draw viewership well on ESPN. They beef up their first 6 games of the year (exception LSU; they finally played a good team in their first 6 games) with cupcake teams and then get shot down in the last half of the year. They rarely win a bowl game; Georgia Tech is going to clean their clock just like last year and almost like 2 years before; they let it get away in the 4th quarter. VT was termed as the #1 defense in the country last year; great, take a look at who they beat, a bunch of no-bodies. What a fraud this team has been for 15 years. GT 37 - VT 10. The genmius has spoken.

This is a win-able game for GA Tech. However, IMHO it may be lost due to stupid offensive play calling by Chan (duh).
While I believe we should go full steam ahead during every minute of the game, I can easily predict that Chan will go ultra-conservative at some point and then VA Tech will take the lead. Haven’t we seen this time and again?
Remember that the Clemson game was won only because our defense was barely able to hang onto that slim lead. How many times can we expect our defense to save us?
Please Chan, open up the offense and LET THEM PLAY!

I want GT to beat VT as much as anyone. However, I don’t want Choice to play no matter what. I can see him pulling a “Willis Reed” circa 1970 (I’m old) and coming out for a couple of symbolic carries to fire the crowd up. I hope Chan will nix this ploy and save Choice for the stretch run. I think that this will be a 17-14 game and either team can win.

Unless GT falls right into VT’s hands with gifts on special teams or offensive turnovers (ala Clemson), GT wins 13-3.
Jon Tenuda against their high school offense is man against boys and that will be the difference.
Coach Beamer and VT are one of the biggest smoke and mirror teams around over the last 15 years. Most of their wins have come over bad to mediocre competition while they have something like a 6-25 record against teams in the top 25. They simple lose many more big games against top competition than they win.
Despite this, to hear some of their fans, they should be in the NFC East, which makes it as much fun as beating them as anyone (besides uga).

Dwyer is going to be a fantastic running back, but he’s not ready to carry the load. He’s not so great on the blocking schemes, and he can’t see the field clearly enough to find the holes. I love the idea of Nesbitt at QB some, but he’s fumble-prone. GT’s defense and special teams are good enough to win this if the offense doesn’t give it away. Run Cox and Evans at them all game, send Dwyer wide once in a while, and pass to the tight ends. That might be enough.

Well, this may come a shock to bloggers here but as much of a DIE HARD TEACH fan I am, I am actually pulling for the opposing teams from here on out. I already know we’ll lose to Georgia again so that’s not even an issue. The reason I will pull for our remaining opponents is because I want CHOOKE GAILEY OUT HERE THAT BAD!!!! I am so sick and freakin’ tired of 7-6.7-6,7-6, 7-6, 7-6 every dang year. Last year was the last straw for me. We were 9-2 going into the Georgia game and we had a chance to do what only one other Tech team has done in Tech history-is finish with 12 wins in a season. So we allow an irratic Reggie Ball to run all over the field (the wrong way half the time may I add), during the Georgia game and then get the ball back with 1:35 left in the game and he throws ANOTHER interception on the Georgia 15 yard line….then the offense that Gailey is supposed to be some “master mind” of doesn’t even show up for the ACC Championship game, though it was cool seeing the team sport the navy blue jerseys again (I really miss those for home games). Then Ball is declared academically ineligble for the Gator bowl. Hello, didn’t we have this same problem back in ‘02 losing 10 players while STILL under Gailey’s tenure? Wouldn’t a SMART coach realize that he needs to keep tabs on his players grades and class work? We FINALLY start Bennett for the Gator bowl and the defense falls asleep for 7 minutes and allows two West Virginia scores in five minutes while at the time we were up by two scores….So in the end, instead of finishing the season 12-2, ACC Champions and possible Top 10 ranking, YET AGAIN we finish 9-5 and as usual losing our last three games which by the way included our in-state rival for the 6th straight year. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH of CHOKE GAILEY!! He sucks D-RAD. All we want for Christmas is a football coach that has a pair!!!
