Tech can beat Hokies without Choice
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Realistically, the news could hardly have been better yesterday on Tashard Choice. I write that while acknowledging that yes, they could have found no ligament damage and that would have been better, but that wasn’t realistic considering the pre-surgery signs. Doctors clearly feared some damage, and it could have been worse.
Tashard has said to Chan Gailey that he might play against Virginia Tech. I wouldn’t put it past him, but I wouldn’t bet on it, either.
I think Tech can beat the Hokies without Tashard, although even with him it will likely take an offensive output that would go beyond reasonable prediction. The Hokies are very tough to run against. Then again, their offense is not very impressive at all.
Oddly, I’d say this: if the Hokies upset Boston College tomorrow night in Blacksburg, Georgia Tech’s chances of winning may actually improve. If Va. Tech loses, I think the Hokies come in here double focused.
As for Rashaun Grant, I think he’s most successful running in open field. Opening the field against Va. Tech may be risky, though, because of their speed on defense. You open lanes for their playmakers. It’s not like spreading the field against Army.
Sometimes, though, we get too scientific in analysis. So what do I know?
Practice today, then briefly tomorrow. Apparently, they’re going Sunday as well.
Later,
Matt

Tech has a good shot at beating Virginia Tech, as long as they stick to the game plan. They have to run the ball, and run it with success. Taylor needs to be on his game also. They need to get James Johnson more involved in the passing scheme of things. Dwyer is a good young running let him pound the middle, and grant take the corners, he has good breakaway speed. Go Jackets!!!!

Unfortunately, if TC wants to go against VaTech, Chan will probably play him. He put Hollings back in vs BYU and basically ruined his career. Chan is a clueless, one dimensional, unimaginative dolt.

While Choice is a great talent, we have plenty of super talented RB. Tech is lucky to be full in this position and I really don’t think that Choice talent will be missed all that much.
What will be missed is Choice’s leadership. He has been the emotion on this team on the field. His yapping helps to keep the other players fired up.
Cox stepped into this leadship position against Army. Who will it be against VA Tech?

I think we need to see a large amount of Dwyer and a good mix of Bennett and Nesbitt. IF our recievers can catch the ball and we can spread the field and Chan lets Bond do his job I think we can win. I would not be shocked to see the defense score, so if the offense will carry it’s weight Tech can win without Choice.
But that is a big IF!

Can someone take Chan’s headset away? This single step will probably give us the best chance of winning. He should watch the game, but not impact the calling of the plays!!
Great news on Tashard!! For Tech, but even more importantly, for TC’s future.

Why do people think like this?…that is so stupid. I like what u have to say most of the time but that has nothing to do with playing the darn game of football.

Not having Choice should cause the offense to become more imaginative & unpredictable. Spread the ball around & get everyone involved. The VT offense is horrible. Should be a physical, ugly, low scoring game. Jackets win 20-17.

The greatest indicator will be when the lines comes out. If we are the underdog, we might win - if we’re favored we’re screwed.
This is the reality of the Chan Era.

The bottom line is that everyone is going to have to step it up and do whatever it takes to win this game next week.We are going to have to move the ball on the ground in order to pass the ball.G.Tech cannot win being a one dimensional team. The key is balance.Good luck Jackets!

TECH can and will beat Va. Tech. This game could get wild and high scoring like last year’s game but I don’t see it. Both teams are very ordinary on offense and really rely on defense and special teams to put them in good position to win games. If TECH keeps it close going into the 2nd half we have a tremendous advantage. In almost every game this year we have dominated play in the 2nd half. Our running game gets better and our defense stiffens. I think we do need to use Nesbitt to give us that extra dimension in the backfield, although VT will probably man up on the outside and crowd the box when Nesbitt comes in. I think the real key (barring TO’s on offense) will be the play of our defense in the first half. If we spot VT 14-17 points in the 1st half we’re in trouble. The D keeps it at 10 or less in the 1st half we win. So my pick is 16-15 good guys in a battle of FG’s.

Hey Matt,, regarding TONY’s assertion that we need to get James Johnson more involved, is it just me that thinks so, or is Johnson injured? I saw him moving gingerly coming off the field against Army, and he doesn’t seem to have confidence in himself. What’s the scoop?
I say Thomas is our best receiver and we definitely need to throw the ball, similar to what we did at the beginning of the game last year.
I think we are screwed as far as winning the division, after UVA’s win against Maryland. No way they lose to NCState and then even if they lose their remaining 3 we are tied with 5-3 records and we lose out with head to head. I’m not sure how it works if we finish in a 3 way tie with UVA and VT, but that is our only hope.

I hope we continue to let Mike Cox run the ball 4 or 5 times a game. He deserves it and I think it’s just a good idea.
Good thing we got some depth, not like when Tony Hollings went down. Grant, Evans, and Dwyer will get it done.
TC if you’re reading this, don’t come back till you’re 100%, before then hurts you and us in the long run (no pun intended).

You were right about not spreading the field against VT, their line backers are too fast and Grant is not good at breaking tackles. Tech needs to use a basic I formation and just run it at them, that’s what worked last year when Choice ran for 100+ yards at VT, of course we had Calvin then so that took a safety out of the box. The passing game will win or lose the game for us against VT.

Winkle, you are dreaming and you must have gone to UGA to be this cruel to get the Techsters hopes up when there is no way to win this game without your leader on the field. VT is a very good team, and it starts at the top with the Coach. Beamer knows how to win the tough game, I think they win with BC and then come win against Tech.
How cruel can a UGA grad be, get our hopes up with more than a week to play. That is just down right cruel. Its like being told you can only shower with water from the Hooch.

Burdell’s bro, don’t think you will see Nesbitt against VT. He has fumbled every time he has been in a game. If he can’t handle a direct snap in the shotgun against a lesser team, Chan will not take that risk in the VT game where a fumble could mean a loss. Taylor will play every snap unless he is injured.

I am hoping for a repeat of the Clemson game —- great defense and special teams play, with a solid running game and minimal number of mistakes on offense. While I also get frustrated with GT’s conservative and predictable play calling, I think that style of play is the only way GT will beat VT. I do not believe VT can beat GT with their offense, but they can beat GT with their defense and special teams if GT helps them with turnovers and field position. Missing TC’s leadership on the field will be the big question mark, but hopefully he can inspire the team from his spot on the sideline.

How did we get roped into another Thur night game ? That’s two this season. And VA Tech will play two Thur night games in 8 days. I think fans find it easier to get to Saturday games than Thur night. Tech needs to have the halftime lead and must win the turnover battle to beat V.T.

Last Monday, I called it, GT 20, VT 17. I’m sticking to it, but it’s a hard game. I believe everyone, from Chan Gailey right down to the least substitute, is going to give 100% in this one. Amazingly, the calls will go Tech’s way, for once.

Wes, I think MW’s point is that if VPI wins tomorrow night, they’re coming to The Flats on a high and we can catch them overconfident. If they lose, they’re going to bee doubly-tough. That’s sports. How is this a surprise to you?

If Tech comes out sleepwalking we lose because of special team play by Va. Tech. Va. Tech is not as good as Ga. Tech but much better coached. Frank Beamer, as ugly as he is, can motivate but if he loses tomorrow night it will take an extra push that even he doesn’t have.

The way we win this game is to conger up some imagination. Let’s start Nesbit with a full house backfield of Grant, Dwyer and Cox. Run some options, cross bucks and sweeps, with cox and dwyer leading Grant around.Who remembers the belly series? Nesbitt can run and he’s got a gun. Run some trick plays, statue of liberty, flea flicker, hook and ladder. Fake a punt or a field goal. Run an on-side kick when they’re not expecting it. Have some freakin’ imaginative balls. Pull out the stops. LET’S GO JACKETS!! You can salvage this season but you’ve got to shake things up.
And yeah, you’re right, I grew up watching Bobby Dodd teams. This stuff sure worked back then.

The Jackets can win this game, but a lot of things must come together.
Most importantly, mistakes such as turnovers, big plays on special teams and penalties at key points of the game must be eliminated. Last week was way too sloppy. I’m hoping this was due to the lack of concentration because of playing an overmatched opponent.
I hate losing Choice for the game, but it could be a mixed blessing. Maybe Gailey will loosen up the play calling since he won’t be able to rely on a stud in the backfield to carry the load.
We certainly can’t allow big plays on defense and fall behind early. Maybe the Thursday night atmosphere will have them pumped up as they come out of the locker room.

Not a betting man, but even if I was I would not touch this game. Would love to see Tech put 4 quarters together. If they do they will win. VT did not have any trouble putting up points against Clemson and has played better offensively since their QB change ( who is injured and questionable vs. BC tomorrow night ).

Georgia Tech has no chance to win against Virginia Tech. None. With or without Tashard Choice. Our team this year is very average, and when it is Coach Beamer against Coach Gailey, it becomes a mismatch. Virginia Tech by 17 or more.

Hey yellowblood, we play a Thursday night game every year because it is a great venue and gets us on national television. And we’ve only played one this season. Of course it’s harder to get to the game than on a Saturday. Be a real fan, leave work early and get there on time to cheer the brave and bold. And Blake, way to be positive. Geez, you people make me sick. Come enjoy a great college football atmosphere, cheer hard for your team and hope for the best. If we win you can be ecstatic and if we lose you can go to work on friday a little tired but proud that you are a TECH fan. If you are a TECH alum I don’t think you’ll miss the $150 one way or the other.
Come’on man, your not a friggin Dawg fan slinging fries hoping to make $150 in a week are you?
This is a huge game for both teams and the intensity on the field will be fierce. Let’s hope the intensity in the stands is the same.

GT80 is right - there is nothing like a Thursday night game on HGF at BDS. The field always looks great, and the backdrop of the Atlanta downtown buildings is spectacular.
And if Tech was such a poor draw for ESPN, why do we get a Thursday night game every year?? You are basically the only sports event on TV that night and it’s a national game, so the whole country is watching. You have to wonder how many of our recruits get that postive feeling about Tech just from the Thursday game.
The bad thing? It’s ESPN, it’s a national game, so the timeouts are more frequent and longer than normal. (But still not as bad as NBC and the ND game - I could swear that every time there was a change of possession, there was a commercial).

I used to hate the Thursday games, then I started leaving work early on Thursday and taking Friday off. Nice way to start a long weekend.
You can’t do the full tailgate (unless you leave work after lunch or take Thursday off!), but bring some Publix subs (turkey hoagies, anyone?) or a bucket of KFC and a cooler with some BEvERages and you’re golden.

The reason that the nerds always draw Thursday night games is because they don’t draw enough viewers away from “Dancing with the Wannabe Stars” to mess up the Arbitron ratings.

The tradition of Tech being on Thursday night football started long before “Dancing With the Stars”, and will continue long after that show has faded away like a bad memory.

Obviously BobinBuford is a typical no common sense nerd. If a viewer watches the bungle bugs play on Thursday Night’s “not ready for prime weekend time” ESPN game then that viewer would not be watching Dancing with the Stars and would skew the Arbitron Ratings. Since only 25 or 30 households watch the average nerd game it doesn’t mess up the ratings for other TV programs.

G-Tech can win without Tashard. V-Tech now has to plan for 3 tailbacks plus Cox, who hits like a hammer. G-Tech’s special teams are very good, the kicking game is terrific, and the defense is outstanding. Nesbitt should not play in this one - he is spectacular, I agree, but his tendency to fumble would cost G-Tech dearly. As long as Bennett doesn’t throw INT’s, G-Tech wins.

Bennett continues demonstrate poor timing. Nesbitt is just a Freshman learning the game. I don not understand why Gailey missed a great opportunity to give Booker playing time during the last game. Is he afraid the kid will show him up? A solid performance by someone else might jut be what Bennett needs to get serious about playing.

look as long as TB doesnt do his usual side arm throwing motion then the jackets should be okay. Roll him out of the pocket and dump off to dwyer or bull or a receiver coming across the middle as long the lbs are not lurking. TC would help but i think this gives other guys a chance to show what they can do and i think Nesbitt should play that way they have to prepare for two styles of play. My prediction: GT 23 VPI 13 GO JACKETS!!!!!!
