Tech rolls; will Choice & Gailey?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It took a while after Tech took a 10-0 lead, then was tied 10-10, but the Yellow Jackets did what they needed to do Saturday at Bobby Dodd. The biggest questions after a 34-10 win were: How bad is Tashard Choice’s knee injury, and what’s this about Chan Gailey being fired?
Choice went down early, and was taken from the field in a wheelchair. He did not return to the sideline, where he spent considerable time in earlier games when his strained right hamstring kept him out of action.
All we’ve heard to date is that he will be evaluated during the week.
Next week is a good week for a bye, and not just because of Tashard’s injury. His chief backup, Rashaun Grant, did not return after suffering an ankle injury late in the second half — after rushing for 119 yards (I think; final stats not yet available).
Tech ran the ball very well today. Mike Cox tied his career high with four carries, good for a career-high 38 yards. Josh Nesbitt ran for more than 40 yards. Dwyer scored a touchdown, and so did fourth-string backup Jamaal Evans.
Again, you wonder about the passing game. Taylor Bennett connected on his first three passes, and five of his first seven. Not so good after that. From my vantage point, Tech’s best chances in the passing game come when he throws to Colin Peek. Not only do I not remember Colin dropping passes this season (although he may have), Taylor’s passes rarely seem to be overthrown or underthrown when he’s aiming for Peek. What’s that about? Or am I crazy?
Don’t know what to make of the CBSportsline blog last night by Dennis Dodd suggesting that Chan Gailey already knows that he’s going to be fired no matter what happens over the rest of the season. Hard to imagine that decision’s been made. Even if it had been made, would the AD tell the coach, and thereby potentially scuttle the season? As you might imagine, Dan Radakovich balked at the whole thing, remarking at what a strange species the internet is. He’s right about that. For more, read Mike Knobler’s work later on-line, and in tomorrow’s paper.
Don’t know Dodd, but some of his suggestions in that same blog were pretty far out there. Hope he has some serious sources, or he’ll look like a goober — if anybody remembers at the end of the season, when all of his premontions/predictions will or won’t come into play.
I’m outta here, getting ready to interview folks, write, and head home. Got an early flight tomorrow for the ACC basketball preseason bonanza in Greensboro, N.C.
Later,
Matt

Can’t be more happy about this entry, Matt. I agree that letting Chan’s firing slip out early is not a positive for the players, but it sure takes a load off of us who are tired of this offensive offense.
Of course, it is possible that it will not be true, but let a dreamer dream!! Chan must go.
Great effort today by the players. Hope Tashard is o.k. He is this team’s heart!!

Good game. Hopefully Choice is o.k..This may sound contrary but I like this offensive coordinator although the question is to let him do his thing. What I saw today lacked for six years and this the handoff to the FB. We only have to give him the ball a few times to keep defenses in place a split second to allow Rb’s and Qb’s to get to the corner. Also Nesbitt showed some ability. Bennett may have learned today to loft some of the longer passes towards the end of the game giving wr’s a chance to catch the ball. He has good arm strenght, poise, etc..just needs experience and catches. D.J. Donley can catch and yes Peek did drop a few balls earlier in year. This offense is producing 400 to 500 yards weekly with a few exceptions and finally is putting team in chance to win other than defense. As for Gailey who knows but the two coordinators appear to be solid now and they need freedom to do their job. The key may have been solved today and that is giving the FB the ball to keep defenses honest. We now need some sort of option option on the corners and pass option out of that then this offense will be ready.

By offensive offense, I mean the conservative, predictable nature of Chan’s play-calling. Allowing a win over an overmatched opponent to affect your discernment seems silly. The offense at GT has year after year been ranked below the top 50 in the country since Chan has been at Tech. Prior to him, it was ranked consistently higher.. Those are the facts.
The players gave a great effort, and as I stated, I am hoping that Tashard is o.k. BUT CHAN MUST GO!!

Don’t know what you mean? We beat a severely outmanned team, and in the first half, we had trouble doing that.
Chan’s offenses have been consistently ranked outside of the top 50 in the country. Before Chan, GT had consistently better offenses, so that it why I say we are tired of his “offensive offense”.
Either way, CHAN MUST GO!! And it looks like he just might be gone..yeah!!!

Chan situation is similar to Florida’s ex-coach. He could recruit, but couldn’t win consistently. Now he’s at Illinois, and the same thing is happening. Why do I bring this up, well Gailey has a similar past, able to recruit very well, but can’t consistently win games (7-6, 6-5, 9-7). Remember what else happen when Florida got a new coach, immediate success. I only hope that if Gailey is not renewed, that Tech goes after a younger head coach, if not give it to Tenuta. His name comes up regularly on ESPN, and good name recognition is valuable for recruiting. Randy Edsel (UCONN, and ex Tech coach) would be my choice, but I understand he’s working off of a 10 year contract. The USF coach is an obvious choice for a lot of schools, but I think USF will pay him enough to stay.

Mr. Jefferson- you are an idiotic bandwagon fan. You don’t even know your own team’s schedule. GT plays VT, NOT VIRGINIA. Virginia finally has a winning season and you think your team is GOD. Please. UVA sucks and always will. Go win another game on a last second score. Your overrated team will get its due. VT will smoke you in November and the luck will run out. I even think the Dawg fans will agree that UVA has NO room to talk smack on this blog. Yes, you beat a lowly inconsistent GT team but only after a 21 spot and a dropped punt. FLUKE!

my take of dodd’s article is that chan may not think he can satisfy the goals that drad has put in place before the seaason. NOT after the 3 early losses that chan’s ‘best team’ experienced and the 3 losses at the end of last season.
combine that possibility with chan’s comments after we lost to uva … ‘i dont know what is wrong blah blah blah…’ and you get the feeling that chan is not feeling to confident at the moment.
looking further down that same blog it is mentioned that jimbo fisher could leave fsu. could it be that he has an oleary clause in his contract to the extent that he can leave without penalty for a head coaching job? a clause like that would certainly make sense considering fisher made a lateral move from lsu to fsu.
now who used to be the assistant ad at lsu?????
DRAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys truly are idiots if you believe Chan has been told he was going to be fired no matter what. You guys really think if Tech finishes 8-5 or better Gailey is going to fired?
Have you bashers not see how the recruiting has improved drastically the past two years. The future is brighter now than it’s been at Tech since 1990.
Tech has lost three games this year and one game was against the #3 team in the country Boston College and the other game was against UVA on the road. UVA will be ranked in the top 15 after this week.
Maryland is not a bad team and were ranked in the top 35 heading into this week and beat Rutgers on the road the week before they played Tech . The same Rutgers that was #10 when Maryland beat them. The same Rutgers team that just beat the #2 in the country.
You Gailey bashers act like the season is a wash when the fact is Tech still finish the season with 10 wins. The teams we have lost to have a combined 18-4 record this year so it’s not like we’re losing to bad programs.
I can only laugh at the people who bash Gailey with your incorrect facts. Like the poster Navigator, his/her post was a post full of BS facts.
Who cares if Jimbo Fisher leaves FSU, it’s not like he’s working miracles w/ there offense. Ga. Tech avg. 28 points per game, FSU is avg. 23 points per game.
With recruiting picking up the way it has the past two years there’s zero chance Gailey will be fired if he wins 8 games or more this season which he will.

i agree with alan - what has jimbo fisher done with fsu, especially given the talent that fsu recruits year after year? can’t beat miami.
bc beat us, and we had early defensive woes against uva and md. but except for a muffed punt at uva and a holding penalty and wide right field goal, we would be sitting at 7-1 rather than 5-3.
i wondered why cox never got the ball - you would have thought he had concrete hands but he does catch the ball well and hasn’t fumbled afterwards. glad to see them finally using the bull.
pro coaches are conservative and that is what we have with chan. the one part i don’t like about that is the pro attitude towards qb’s - stay loyal to the starter even though he isn’t doing well. even jaws mentioned it during the falcon’s game on monday, but bobby is changing qb’s, but then again, he is a college coach. chan maybe changing that with more playing by josh.
with uva winning at md last night, basically zero chance to win our division, but an 8-4 or 9-3 record is not out of the question.

Alan,
None of the facts on our site are incorrect. There is no way Chan will get 8 wins this year. We have 2-3 tough games remaining this year and you are expecting to win 2 of those (plus Duke - which you only have to look back a few years and see where Chan embarrased us at Duke before). No way. 7 wins sure I can see. I guess you are counting the emerald nut bowl we will be going to. You saw what happened last time we went to that bowl didn’t you? Another Gailey embarrasment.
Now on to you Shane:
Why should i be a fair weather Gailey basher? I root for the Yellow Jackets die hard all season, but Gailey has got to go!!! Win or lose does NOT change my opinion of his coaching so why should I bash any less? When he loses I continue to bash him the same amount. Unlike you guys who don’t post anything in reply when we lose but then are all up on Gailey when we win. Who’s consistent?
Sit back and realize what mediocricy we have. If we lose to UGA again he better be GONE!

next thing you know you’ll be saying that it is unamerican to be unhappy with chan. sniff. poor poor chan. i certainly dont feel that expressing displeasure at a million dollar coach for being mediocre is bashing. does your boss bash you for your job performance?
as far as jimbo fisher goes your right …. he isnt doing squat at fsu. that doesnt mean that drad hasnt set goals for our befuddled but loveable old coach. to be out of the running for the acc title after 4 games doenst make me feel warm an fuzzy towards chan and im positive drad isnt feeling w and f either.
sorry i am not fond of mediocre…. as in 4-5 losses a year mediocre. if your happy with that i suggest and all the other tech fans that are happy with those kinds of results find another team to root for. or maybe you can retire with our braineless former ad. you have the same aspirations for gt that he did.

With all respect for our great RB, Choice,I do not believe that a team lives or dies on the 100% health of one player. Actually, too much of a load was placed on RChoice (40 carries…good grief). In the ACC the offense is 3rd in total yards, 4th in ppg scoring, 1st in rushing yards and 3rd in 1st downs per game. And yes they are 12th in yards per game passing. 4th in red zone offense. 2nd in sacks allowed. Yeah, I can tell it’s a really bad offense! The defense is 1st in ppg allowed and 1st in yards allowed per game. 1st in sacks. 3rd in pass defense. 4th in red zone defense. They also lead in punting and return yards on kickoffs. Kickoff coverage is 3rd in the ACC. Tech is 2nd in turnover margin.
But the game is more than stats.
Slow starts have played into every loss as well as some wins. Turnovers have not been there like they have been. A lot of passes dropped. Of course, it was OK for Wake Forest to beat Army by only 21-10. Army had more total yards in the game. And BC only beat Army by 37-17. BC just lead by 16-9 at half.
It looks like Army hangs on for one half against any of the ACC teams this year. So please use some other argument than some of the BS I see above.

Ramblin:
You’re right - Chan told our lineman to hold on 3rd down so that Travis had a long field goal. And nobody else in football runs the ball in order to keep the clock near the end of the game to so that if you make the field goal, the other team has no time left.
Guess what - if the field goal was 5 feet to the left, the game is over and Tech wins. And obviously you did not watch the Miami game, where we ran out the clock against them using our rushing offense.
And against Army? I saw passes on first down numerous times. And the point where Army came back and tied the game was right after TC got hurt, which was obviously affecting the team. After that, nothing.

Tickle Piles started in sorority houses on the west coast and moved eastward during the ‘60’s. Originally Tickle Piles were a group of girls tickling each other to the point of exhaustion. They became a Tech tradition when some of our fraternities began to get involved. Members would get in a pile and tickle each other until some peed in their pants. The real problem began when this innocent fun began to take on sexual overtones and some of the boys took off their clothes off.

Very well stated Chantice. Later, after a number of the original GT participants graduated from Ma Tech, they missed the tickle piles. Eventually, Al Gore invented all of the internets, and the Hive was formed. Tickle piles soon resumed and all was gay again. Then, what was needed was a coach who held the same enthusiasm. Hence Gayley.

In response to the question about what a Tickle Pile is, if you have a recording of the UGA vs. Vanderbilt game, watch the UGA players on Vandy’s logo at midfield after Coutu kicks winning FG. That is a video definition of a tickle pile.

All you Chock Gailey supporters are on some serious crack!!! He is the WORST excuse for a coach I have EVER seen. I am so tired of these medicore 7-6 seasons. If his recruiting was so great the past three years we would be competing for a national championship by now….so I don’t want to hear anymore about how his recruiting is “so wonderful”. The final straw with me was last year when we had a chance to finish 12-2 and be only the 2nd team in Tech history to finish with 12 wins in a season. But NOOOOOOO….he doesn’t bench a crippled Reggie Ball for Georgia, STILL starts him in the ACC Championship then Ball flunks out of school (Shouldn’t the head coach know about these things before hand?) and then our defense falls asleep for ten minutes in the gator bowl…so don’t tell me Chock Gailey is doing such a wonderful job!! Oh By the way, you 30 year old graduate a few blogs ago that thinks Chan is doing a great job…SHUT UP! You obviuosly NEVER paid attention to the Tech football program. CHAN HAS GOT TO GO FOR ME TO EVEN WANT TO SUPPORT THE TEAM AND I AM AN AVIDE TECH FOOTBALL DIE HARD FAN!!!!!!! I WILL NEVER SPEND ANOTHER DIME FOR A TICKET AS LONG AS GAILEY IS THE COACH!!!!
