Tech’s passing, catching, far from fancy

I wrote a story a little while ago about dropped passes, topic of hot discussion Sunday on The Hive.

I don’t know exactly how to define them, which was a key question in the cyber-chat. But I can say with confidence that Tech is dropping too many.

No, Taylor Bennett is not throwing the ball superbly this season, not by a long shot. But way too many catchable balls are not being caught. How many superb catches re being made? Hardly any.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but the passing game has to improve significantly.

Looking way ahead, I’ve thought about Tech’s offensive line for the future. Obviously, LT Andrew Gardner may be a preseason All-America candidate next season. From there, they’ll return some pretty impressive experience even though they’ll lose Kevin Tuminello, Matt Rhodes and Nate McManus in the middle.

Cord Howard and A.J. Smith have gained valuable experience at RT. Howard played some guard last year. He needs to stay eligible.

Trey Dunmon almost certainly will start at center, and Dan Voss may be a starting guard. Howard could be the other guard, and A.J. the tackle, although Clyde Yandell may get a shot at right tackle next season as a redshirt freshman. Nick Claytor will be a prime backup at minimum, and if Jacob Lonowski’s shoulder heals up, he’ll be in consideration.

Funny, but a lot of Tech fans have worried for quite some time about Tech’s offensive line depth, and whether they’ve recruited enough there. I don’t see that as a problem area.

Donnelly looked like he has the best set of hands out of all the WR. Yet he plays 2-3 plays….I would be interested to see how many of the Freshman would fair given more of an opoprtunity..At worst it would push the upperclassmen’s level of performance….

And speaking of recruiting, please tell me we have been recruiting some people for our WEAK secondary.. Word Daniels is terrible, the guy tries hard, but dude has been postarized more than Jenna Jaimeson!

I agree. With Jon Tenuta’s defensive schemes, it seems like a shutdown corner or two is exactly what Tech needs.

Of course, everyone wants shutdown corners…

tech’s offense, and particularly the passing game need a lot of work…….however, there have been bright spots over the past two weeks…..( the second half of last weeks’ game obviously)…….you’re not going to get UM, who can’t stop the run, every week so the passing has to continue to improve

third down conversions are up over 50%………TB seems to have a little more poise, tho his timing and accuracy are off a bit….now, if the receivers could just hold onto the ball…….get those freshmen/soph WR’s in there if they have to…….put choice or dwyer in a slot back or something and throw more passes to them……it seems like TC gets 10 yds every time they throw him the ball……GT doesn’t throw to the backs enough, especially since the WR connection isn’t there often…..

Matt,

Why don’t you do some research before you write an article rather than just shooting from the hip?

This team is doing a lot of things very well and I wonder why all I see in the AJC is critical? Why don’t you try to stimulate some discussion about the positive things that have been happening?

Yes, the passing game can get better, but it is doing fine.

We got 8 first downs by throwing the ball against Miami and a few were on critical 3rd down plays. A lot of ink has been used describing our running game but we only got 13 first downs rushing the ball.

Against Maryland, we got 13 first downs throwing versus 11 first downs running the ball.

We won at Miami because we did not make mistakes that stop a drive or take us out of scoring position. The team played as a team.

If Tech continues to play as a team and we do not make mistakes that stop ourselves, we should win the rest.

This is a very good Georgia Tech team that, unfortunately, has made mistakes at critical times that cost two games.

The Tech offense is balanced and gives the other team plenty to worry about. The defense is playing very tough. And, special teams have been great this year.

Agreed on the OL…we may be better next year than this year there. Voss and Dunmon play with an attitude…which is good in an OL. Regarding the secondary…particularly the CB’s…that is a tough position at GT in Tenuta’s defense. You play the majority of the game with little help as we are always doing various blitz packages forcing the safeties up more. Not only that…Tenuta is the defensive back coach…and a tough one to impress at that! I cannot give any of our current players in the secondary a hard time as they are playing hurt and they are playing hard…the effort is there. If they could just learn to play the ball at bit better and avoid the interference calls which often times are not…they just look bad groping after the opposing WR’s…it would help. Again…they have a tough job…and one that requires the pass rush to get their extremely fast.

as shaky as Bennett has ben attimes if just half of the drops are caught then we are not having this conversation and sveral drives would have stayed alive. Receivers have to make the regular catchs and then make a few plays to bail out the QB. Donley is a play maker. Get him on the filed . He could be a Cahmp Bailey type. Do not get into this he is a frosh so he is not ready to play. Put your playmakers out there. When Tashard needs a blow play DWyer becasue I think he is a playmaker. I love Rashun and he can help us but the fact is that he is not going to make a big play for you.

This is NOT a very good tech team. The secondary is horrible. Burdell’s brother makes great points. Play the freshmen, they are making plays. Why on earth is Donnelly on the bench. H3LL let him play some defense. He was a superstar on both sides of the ball in H.S. and our secondary is playing like a high school one. Can the safeties please come up and lay some wood on someone ? Taylor and the offense continues to be pathetic. Enough said there, 17 pts wont win many games, maybe DUKE, ARMY thats it…

Until Chan goes, the passing game will not get better. Teams with good passing games pass to set up the run. Chan runs to setup the run to setup the run to setup the punt or field goal!!

Chan must go!!!

Yes, I agree the passing game MUST get better, but that’s just a small change Changing QB could help alot and using what you recruited. The are some great players just standing on the sideline they don’t even sit cause they want to get in the game so bad to help the Jacket win. Donely,Nesbitt,Buttler,Jefferson, Burnnett and do not forget Dwyer (they have a parade all american and he’s done a great job when he did have the chance). They have totally taken the stringer out of theses players. They are not playing and they are not red shirted but red flaged on the sideline. Tech would still be in the ACC play-off if they would just use what they got. Just mixes it and use what they got. Grade A player with D- coaching.

I cant wait to see nesbit with dwyer runnign the speed option. nesbitt can throw the ball also he is young and just needs to slow things down in his head a little also I would like to see the ball thrown to peek a little more he is going to be in the league we might as well use him oh yeah keep feeding choice

Whatever happened to the idea of lining up Rashaun Grant in the slot? I like Grant fine as the backup RB, but with his speed we sure could use him as a receiver.

It looks like the light has gone on for D. Thomas and we need him to continue improving. Greg Smith seems to really be struggling. And we flat out miss having James Johnson healthy and productive. Because he has been banged up, he hasn’t been able to replace any of the lost productivity from Calvin leaving early.

Nesbitt is as absolute freak!!! I got giddy watching him run all over the Miami defense, the guy is HUGE!!!! From what I have seen he has an arm on him as well. IF CG is gone next year and we have some one with half a brain, they will use him and his versatility, combined with Dwyer and a strong O-line…nasty things people nasty!!

But if Chan stays, he will waste another year on the sideline, misuse Dwyer and we will go 7-5,,,again!!

I don’t have a problem with the comments posted by Matt. It’s an opinion with some good points. My opinion on the passing game is two-fold.Number one some of the receivers make feeble attempts at the ball when it’s not perfectly thrown. You’ve gotta go and get it period. Number two, many times when Taylor is being chased he doesn’t plant the back foot. He throws off balance which doesn’t allow him to get enough zip on his passes. Also he doesn’t seem to exude confidence when he is stuggling in his passing. He drops his head and runs to the sideline. If he could find his rhythm during the game it will totally change everything for him and his confidence. He needs a complete passing game like he had in the second half of the Maryland game.

just read the column above, “tech’s air game grounded”…….the stats from the ACC indicate GT ranks high in rushing offense but last in passing in the ACC……i reviewed stats on D1 teams…here are GT’s rankings

Rushing yds; GT ‘s rank is 20th___

Passing yds; 108th__

3rd down conversions; 96th_

scoring: 62nd__

scoring and third down conversion success seems to correlate best with a teams overall performance and ranking in a cursory glance at the leaders in those categories and their respective overall bcs ranking……the numbers on tech’s offense are typical of the chan gailey era as bamawreck points out…….low scoring, poor sustaining of drives leading to a strong kicking game,ie, punting and FG’s instead of TD’s…..despite dominating the last two teams, GT lost a close game to maryland, and squeaked out a win against miami, even with miami’s poor offense and even worse rushing defense( a team tailor made for a favorable matchup with GT and we spanked em a whopping 17-14) ……..chan’s offense remains the same as it always has; strong on the run with not much after that, which invariably leads to middle of the road stats, middle of the road record……. mediocrity delivered as ordered

Great and exciting offensive play calling by Coach Bond. Unfortunately, untimely lapses in execution, concentration, or both have necessitated adjustments towards what works. This offense will start making the plays and will be dangerous. This is easily a 6-1 (or 7-0) team in 4-3 clothing. If the plays are made and the defense is on, this team can beat anyone. Under these circumstances, GT can take Va Tech, win the others, get a little help in the ACC, and beat BC in the ACC Championship with an Orange Bowl berth on the line.

I really thought James Johnson would break out this year. It is a shame he has not been 100% this year. I have heard he is one of the hardest working players on the team. Hopefully the Jackets will improve the offense and take some of the pressure of the defense to play a perfect game. Stats can be great to look at but they can also be padded vs. bad teams.

The WR job is ready for anyone to step up and take it. Greg Smith? James Johnson? Thomas? Donnely? Some PLEASE step it up!

The Offense will be fine next year if the recievers step it up. Same story as this year.

Next year the defense will be the question mark…

matt, intresting blog.nobody wants to hear this,at least on the uga blog, but a lot of the drops are because these are kids, not pros.dawg fans seem that firing coaches is the answer, but the kids already know how to catch at this level,so i don’t blame the coach.i don’t have the answer, but if you do you can make a pile of money.tech, uga, the falcons, just to mention a few are all having this problem.yes, the pros drop some too. i am glad you brought up techs o line and recruiting.i noticed on rivals that tech signed no linemen in 06,only three or four in 07,and have one commited o linemen this year.chan had better get busy or tech will have the o line woes that uga is having now.you think everything is ok,then you have a couple of injurys, and a guy or two that won’t get with the program, and you have a crisis.i think to be successful a team should try to sign three to four o linemen every year.they are the heart of the offense.remember, you need 10 o linemen just for the 2 deep, and thats if no one gets hurt.the only other area of concern i see for tech is dbs,you lose four this year, but dbs are a lot easier to find and work into the system than good o linemen.

Just like the AJC to seek and report the negative in a Tech win. Pretty much standard operational procedure. Having vented that, I’ll first give props to the 200+ rushing performance by TC. Where’s the national media on that one ? Don’t give me the “oh it was another upset Sat.” garbage. A man totes the rock for 200+ and gets minimal mention in the national press !? O’ line must have been great in the 2nd half. Didn’t get to see it, but sensed it in the voices of the Hurricane announcers on XM Radio. As far as the disregard,….that’s cool. Chan Gailey has run our once magnificent offense into the ground. He has had 3 different QB’s and 3 different OC’s since he has been here, but it hasn’t mattered. As long as Chan is here our offense will SUCK. Because he is the worst coach in the history of college football and needs to be fired today. If Spurrier, or Friedgen, or Mayer were coaching Tech, we would be contending for not only the ACC title but the national title as well. But we are stuck with the sorriest excuse for a coach in the history of the NCAA.

After 7 games we all should have some valid perspective on this team. It is a very good team that quite likely belongs in the top 25. Tech lost to BC which is a genuine top 5, lost on the road to VA which has also proven itself to be more than expected. The MD loss should not have happened. From here, Tech can and should win out. VA TECH and UGA will be tough but it is GA TECH’s turn to pull an upset and UGA is demoralized. UNC can also very well pull an upset on Tech. All we need from Bennett is a few completions and no interceptions. If you’re are a running team you don’t need a Joe Montana.

Coaches that say “I did not know that”; “I was surprised by that”, “I thought that if…”; are NOT INSPIRING TO YOUNG MEN!!!

Surely if anyone is supposed to know what is going on, and what is expected, it is the coaches.Even if you don’t know what is going on!

Mssrs. Gailey and Bond - STEP UP and lead !!! Do not ever give the impression of doubt.!!!

That’s what I like about Tenuta, he blitzes even when the corners are getting bombed. At least he knows for sure that if he wipes out the passer, the corners can snooze. By the way - the pass interference strategy was way better than the BC game on the corners!!! Tenuta continues to blitz and makes the best of what he has. Now if only the corners can be convinced that these bombs can be batted away or intercepted - the defense will be complete.

As for the offense, until the coaches know where they are and where they are going - for sure, we will continue to run, run, run,….. to somewhere - even if we are not sure where that somewhere is!!!

Joe, there’s plenty of research/data in the story. Good look arguing that. Tech ranks 108 out of 119 in passing yardage, and 113 in passing efficiency. Spare me the number of first downs rushing and passing. By the way, the number of rushing first downs is less tell-tale when you’re breaking off runs of 20-plus yards, essentially netting multiple first downs on one run. Choice had a plus-50 run, too.

Choice, by the way, received plenty of media attention in the Sunday paper. He’s received plenty of attention all season. The idea that he’s being under-publicized might carry weight nationally, but not locally.

Jason,

Practice went fine Monday. Thanks for asking. The mystery of Saturday remains unsolved, with a lot of odd details that don’t make sense. Teachers were fine in school Monday, and we got a great progress report on one of our daughters.

Tech signed three OL this year, and they all look to have substantial potential. Ts Yandell (very good) and Claytor (big body, athletic, needs more work than Yandell), and OG Gilbert. Have a commitment from the kid at Dublin this year, and going after a couple more. The O-line is nowhere near approaching desperation.

Tech’s weaknesses:

  1. Coaching (Gailey)
  2. Secondary (Poor Avery Roberson is just not good - beg Laurence Marius to come back to school - and yes - move Donnely to safety - he’s a beast.
  3. Passing - A great deal of this is due to Gailey’s conservative attitude, but we could use a change-up in the form of Nesbitt more often. Open things up!

Matt,

The research I referred to was the last two games. It really doesn’t matter where Tech ranks in the overall passing game, because Tech is primarily a run oriented offense.

Bennett has completed passes when it counted. And, he has forced the defense to play honest.

If the Tech passing game was so bad, teams could “suff the box” and shut down even Choice, but that has not happened with the possible exception of Boston College.

In the third quarter against Miami, Tech absolutely dominated the clock. Yet, first downs rushing only exceeded first downs passing by 4 for the entire game.

Are you maintaining that Tech needs to stop running the ball and go to a primary passing offense? If so, then you must believe that the only way to win games is to put 35 points on the board and hope your defense can keep the other guys from scoring 36.

Tech’s dominate running game compliments the defense. It keeps the other team’s offense off the field.

Bobby Dodd did this in the 1965 Gator Bowl when his Tech team played highly ranked Texas Tech who featured Heisman winner Donnie Andersen.

Tech ran straight at Texas Tech and still holds the Gator Bowl record for first downs rushing the football at 33.

Kim King, the starting QB went down with an injury early in the game, yet Tech still won the game 31 - 21.

A fair number of passes were completed by Tech, but the running game (Lenny Snow, Craig Baynum, etc.) kept Andersen and the rest of the Red Raider offense on the bench and off the field.

Even AJC sports writers have to agree that an offense can’t score on you unless it has the ball on the field.

This Tech team has a lot of positives going for it. It would be great if you AJC guys could start emphaszing the positives rather than constantly going negative.

Furman Bisher, why don’t you take these guys to lunch and teach them how to be real sports writers?

In case no one noticed, this team had a 3 point lead and ran out the last 5 minutes of the game. TB is slowly but surely coming along, and Nesbitt throws in a nice wrinkle.

Until a team can stop the run - like Miami could not do at the end of the game - why pass? As a great man once said, there are 3 things that can happen when you throw a pass - and 2 of them are not good.

The sun is more likely to not come-up tomorrow than Gailey coaching Tech to victories in all of their remaining games!

Check the stats: Tech dominates again vs “the U” … YES, it’s a win, but 3pts is too close when you dominate like the stats show!

And go back and look at how they dominated the stats vs. Maryland … and LOST! AND don’t forget… vs. Maryland Tech even scored a defensive TD. Again, AND LOST!!

THERE WILL BE ANOTHER “HOW IN THE H*!! DID TECH LOSE TO ???” ON OR BEFORE 11/25/07.

Gailey = J-O-K-E!

* BY THE WAY ….. * Jonathan Dwyer scored 6 TDs in Tech’s first 4 games. Gets just 4 carries vs. Clemson, and NO CARRIES vs. Maryland or Miami ….. Did he quit the team, or is this just more evidence that Gailey = J-O-K-E???

Did somebody say Tech will run the table? Hey, I like positive thinking as much as the next guy, but that’s just crazy. Tech will beat Army, Duke & NC and get flattened by Va Tech on a Thursday night ESPN game. Tech will go into the UGA game 7-4…the Dogs may well have the same W/L record, by the way. Tech is up & down, but Georgia’s not very good this year and will have just run a gauntlet of Florida, Kentucky & Auburn (with Troy thrown is for homecoming). On the one hand, Tech will have a great chance to finally beat Georgia this year. On the other hand, beating Georgia to go 8-4 and heading for yet another mid-level bowl game might be enough to get Gailey another contract extension. Tech should thank Gailey for his time and hire Bobby Petrino when the Falcons fire him in ‘08.

By GT Fantastic

October 16, 2007 1:20 PM | Link to this

I think Gaily is doing an adequate job and is far from the worst football coach in history. Do you forget Bobby Ross’s winless season, or the great Bill Lewis program. As Tech found at Clemson last year, if you can run the ball without being stopped, then it is extremely demoralizing and very effective. GT has a great run game.

As far as the passing game, it is sub par. Taylor takes too long to get into the flow of the game and the receivers either are not open, not seen by the QB, or drop the ball. Nesbit is not ready yet, but it is good he is getting time to not only run but make some passes. Not sure how to fix it, but getting rid of Gaily is not it.
A lot of school fans say 8-3 is not a good year, but very few schools exceed 8-3 on a consistent basis. GT needs to get to 8-3, but the recruiting has been very good and we need to stick with the process as it will yield very good results if we can ever get a tall enough QB with legs and the ability to toss an accurate pass. (Nesbit? maybe.) One question, why do we never see our 2nd QB Booker?

Joe,

You’re coming from a totally different place than I am, and that’s your prerogative.

What happened in 1965 is not relevant in the least. Passing yardages were one half then what they are now for all teams across the board. Tech, by the way, averaged 142.8 rushing yards per game that season with 12 rushing TDs, and 142 passing yards per game with 12 passing touchdowns. That’s balance.

On a game-by-game basis, a team can get buy with a big disparity in rushing to passing yards, or vice-versa. Not over the course of a 12-game season, not in this day and age. There are reasons aplenty the wishbone is hardly run by anyone anymore (does anyone run it?).

Nothing you write changes the fact that Tech has a vastly inferior passing offense, nor the reality that over the remainder of the season, the Jackets are almost certain to need the pass to be more effective to win.

I’m not suggesting Tech run less and pass more AT ALL! I’m suggesting that when Tech passes (the number of attempts is not the problem), more of them need to be caught. That will improve passing efficiency, and help open up the running game.

Again, this is not about the No. of runs vs. the No. of passes. It’s about what you do with the passes Tech attempts. Right now, they’re not doing enough.

By gtman

Here’s the major problem with the CB’s. They are not turning and “looking” for the ball after the receivers (they’re defending) have established and made it perfectly clear that they are running a go rte. Tech is going to get tested time and time again on these down field plays. Anyone who has ever played corner knows not to keep eyes on the QB, but for goodness sakes, if you’re in an all out sprint downfield go after the ball (if you’re not already 5 steps behind). H3ll over half the deep plays that burned us this year, we could have made a play if the CB knew where the dam ball was. Try it Tech CB’s, it can’t hurt.

Have college coaches gone too far with the athletic large WR’s at the expense of guys who truely have great hands? Obviously you would like to have your cake and eat it too but I see all over the TV these athletic specimen’s who are tall, strong, and fast, but the ball clanks off their hands half the time. Is there too much focus on the “YAC” (yards after catch) by coaches? I’d much rather see a player catch the ball consistently for 10 yard gains rather then a receiver dropping a bunch of balls but breaks the big one every now and then. I think they call them possesion receivers….guys you can count on to catch a ball when is crunch time.

after reading some of the post concerning our pass defense, i dont think most people realize one very important aspect of our overall defense. Tenuta plays a very high risk, high reward style defense. this defense when executed properly gets tremendous pressure on the QB ( last i checked we led the nation in sacks and tackles for loss) but it leaves our CB’s on an island with receivers. and as long as we play Div I football, receivers are taught to get open on man to man coverage. but it leaves a huge area in the middle of the field when LB’s blitz, and it leaves CB’s one on one when the safeties blitz. now we have given up the big play but thats to be expected if our DB’s are constantly in man to man coverage. No corner on any level can cover a receiver more than a few seconds its impossible. so lets cut our DB’s a little slack because they are playing in a very elaborate blitz heavy scheme. it pays off when we can get to the QB on early downs to force 2nd and 3rd and long situations. i knew a smart QB with great protection would eventually pick us apart i.e Matt Ryan. but most QB in the ACC arent used to seeing the different scheme and blitzes we throw at them on a weekly basis.
