Over and under
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I don’t bet. It’s not legal, you know. But I love to look at betting lines. They give sports fans one more thing to argue about.
So here are one man’s over-and-under numbers for Saturday’s game between Georgia Tech and Maryland.
Sacks for Tech’s defense: 4. Over could spell a whole lot of trouble for Maryland, which has been one of the worst teams in the ACC in pass protection. Under means Tech isn’t shutting down the run enough to get a consistently strong pass rush.
Completion percentage for Tech: 48. Over means the Yellow Jackets have a chance to win, because they really don’t need a great passing game, just a credible one. Under means Tech’s offensive hopes rest entirely on the shoulders of Tashard Choice and the offensive line and fullback.
Yards per carry for Keon Lattimore: 4. Lattimore gets a lot of yards in part because he gets a lot of carries, more than any other rusher in the ACC’s top 10. If Tech holds him under 4 yards per carry (he averages 4.4), Maryland’s offense will struggle to sustain drives. If Tech doesn’t hold him under 4 yards a carry, the Terps set too high a mark for the Jackets’ offense.
Yards per carry for Tech: 4.4. N.C. State is the only ACC that is allowing more yards per carry than Maryland’s 4.4 (but remember who Maryland has played, including Rutgers and West Virginia). Similarly, Tech’s league-best 5.0 per carry is a very misleading statistic; the Jackets’ best yards-per-carry in ACC games was 4.1 against Clemson.
What over and unders would you set for this game, and why?

Score at end of game. Tech needs to have ‘over’ the number of points compared to Maryland.

turnover margin +2 for Tech, under means we’re not getting enough pressure on the QB and run coverage, over means the Terps are caving in to the heavy Jacket attack. The Jackets are +7 for the year if I’m correct.

CG says his players are experienced, don’t need motivation. Chan, have you submitted your huge “cost reduction” ideas to 3M, Alcoa,USAir, Wachovia…..well, you get my point? 18—-21 year old students have “been around”, need no motivating yet successful businesses continue to inspire their 40-70 year olds to reach higher levels. No wonder…..Menthol Bowl…no wonder.

I liked Chan’s comment that he told Bond to “keep it conservative” against Clemson once we got a 4 point lead. It worked then because of an superhuman effort by the defense, but how many games can you count that it has lost for us? Last year’s conference championship for one. He just won’t let go of the offense and it’s killing us.

when are we going to start covering recievers? the blitz is great unless an offensive picks up on it as boston college did.once BC picked up our blitz they threw 400 yards, it was easy because thier recievers were all alone in the secondary. can’t we learn anything from that ?

Bob,
20,000?!?!
Try:
Tech vs Clemson: 54,635 fans Tech vs BC: 51,112 fans Tech vs Samford: 43, 288 fans
Granted Tech doesn’t have a 80-100,000 seat stadium like the bigger schools but it still fills out pretty good considering there’s less than 60,000 seats. Guessing you’re a dawg fan right? Check your facts next time buddy! You were off by about 30,000. But good try!

OK,let’s try again since my numeral twenty-eight (28) turned into a one (1). Twenty-eight (28) = the point cushion I would like to see Chan Gailey adopt as the minimum before deciding to go “conservative”. Not many college teams will overcome 28-point leads. Lesser leads vanish every Saturday.

I am really becoming a fan of Mr. old gold engineer.
One of the few privilege’s of being an old fart is being able to speak the truth without worrying about what other people will think.
He understands the “Gailey Mentality” and why it will never produce anything but a mediocre program.
Thank you, my friend - it’s a privilege to be counted among your number.

Here’s an over/under for you: 1 -> the number of times Tech has defeated a Mark Richt coached UGA team…….I’m going with the under since the actual number is ZERO!!
Have fun in you’re own tickle pile SPANKERS!

To: Bob’s an idiot
If you losers wouldn’t remove seats everytime you have a bad year, you could have a big stadium. The spankers don’t want to see an empty stadium so they remove bleachers when the program goes in the tank.
How many seats are going to be removed this year?
P.S. - I guess Taylor Bennett isn’t the Heisman Trophy candidate he was propped up to be. Seems like everyone else’s defense isn’t as soft as WVU.

I’m with the previous bloggers who realize what an idiot Gailey is ….. telling his O.C. to be conservative with a 4pt lead, then 7pts. then, I guess in Gailey’s mind, an unsurmountable lead for Clemson to overcome - 10pts!
Yeah, in addition to the Wake game last year, just maybe he did the same in the UGA game… Tech did have the lead for most of the game, and it was a crazy, fluke fumble recovery for a TD by UGA’s D that gave them the lead, 7-3 - NICE one coach! protecting a 3pt. lead - jeez.
Now, knowing he’d told his O.C. this in the Clemson game while watching some of the replay last night on CSS, Tech fans are due for more of Gailey snatching DEFEAT out of the jaws of Victory.
Proof: again, armed with the knowledge he’s told his O.C. to go conservative…….with a little more than 11 minutes to go in the game Tech had just taken a 13-3 lead. The D stuffs Clemson for losses back to around the 10-15 yd line on the first 2 plays after the kickoff. The crowd’s getting hyped-up, the players are feeding off of the crowd, Tech intercepts the 3rd down pass attempt, and has the ball at midfield … It’s time to put the final nail in the coffin coach! Drive down, score 7, 20-3 lead, game over!! Instead …….
Heartache coming for us Tech fans, heartache coming!

Chan does nothing but depress me with his mediocricy.
Go conservative with a 4pt lead? What the hell? Even pro teams don’t “go conservative” in that situation. If it were not for Tenuta’s D and TC we would have been really emberassed with that kind of attitude.
AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD - MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM CHAN AND GET THE RECIEVERS SOME EXTRA PRACTICE SO THEY QUIT DROPPING EASY PASSES. You deserve to be fired.

I’m no Chan apologist, but those calling out for Chan to be a better “motivator” need to tune into YouTube a little bit. Check out the clip of Chan after the Miami game last year. Check out the clip of team chaplain before the UNC game last year. How about checking out the clip of Double Deuce before the game this past Saturday? This team doesn’t need more motivation. This team is inspired from within. What this team needs is weekly preparation. And that is where I fault Chan from time to time. But how about a little credit where credit is due. Chan saw a D that was soft for the UVA game so what does he do? He pits 1s against 1s in practice last week, and look what happens to the high-powered Clemson O on the next Saturday?
It’s absolutely amazing that we can have this level of pessimism after a win over a ranked team in our house for the first time in who-knows-when.
Am I a love-Chan-at-all-costs guy? Nope. If we lose against the turtles this weekend due to lack of preparation, that will fall squarely on Chan’s shoulders.
Go Jackets!

GTJuggernaut:
You make a good point, we knew our defense was good and Tenuta is a great planner. That’s what really won that game. Well the D and TC. Chan Gailey had little to do with that. His offense still looked lethargic. The receivers couldn’t catch balls and we could have easily lost that game if the Clemson kicker hadn’t missed FGs like he did (I know some of them were long).
I am as pumped up as anyone that GT won that game and I was cheering them on the whole time, but I still see mediocre in Chan’s coaching and I think it’s time he goes.
