How do you pump up the Jackets?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A strange thing happened last week, and I don’t mean Tech beating Clemson.
In practice, the No. 1 offense worked against the No. 1 defense (no tackling) more than a little.
That’s not typical during the season, although it happens some times. Chan Gailey’s idea with that was to pick up tempo, to get each side more accustomed to the game speed they’ll face in the upcoming game.
He downplayed it somewhat today, but a few players suggested it had quite a positive effect (which Mike Knobler will write a full story about later).
All I know is Tech appeared to play with greater purpose against Clemson than against Virginia or Boston College. The trick is doing that week in and week out, especially with two straight road games coming up at Maryland and Miami.
So how do you maintain that intensity? Gailey said (and has said before) he’s not the type to rah-rah the troops to no end before games, that they have to have the maturity to recognize the importance of what’s at hand on their own. Players, though, help. Tashard Choice is the chief motivator, and Gary Guyton and Jamal Lewis are among the most vocal players on defense. In this regard, Tech misses Joe Anoai, who was very good in that role last year.
Moving on, but not to the point of belaboring this point, the passing game has to improve, and signicantly, for Tech to compete week in a week out. Me, I’d try Josh Nesbitt for more than two plays to see what he’s got. And I’m not saying that’s the only way to improve the passing game. There were a bunch of dropped passes last Saturday.
Later,
Matt

I agree. GA Tech historically (in the past few years) can get up for the big games but has trouble with the teams that they are supposed to beat.
I don’t know if this is a Chan thing, but it has got to change.

Thanks again, Matt.
Re: the passing game.
Having seen 4 of the first 5 games live, I give Taylor Bennett a good grade (A-) for game management and decision making. Inexperienced receiving corps has hurt his completion percentage significantly.
I’m still very comfortable with Taylor as the solid #1 QB, but I agree, Nesbitt (or Booker) should get a few series here and there. I hope Gailey/Bond will get the backups some experience and utilize their skills.
Maryland and Miami will be tough road games. It would be nice to get’em both, but that’s asking a lot. Maryland first…

If Tech REALLY wants to improve their passing game, they need to do what they did in Taylor’s first two games (Connecticut and W.Virginia). They need to rally around him and treat him like the rooking quarterback that he is. Against W. Virginia, Tech’s offense rallied around him to help him be successful. Now they seem to be looking to him to be the leader. He is not ready for that experience wise. He’ll get there but he is simply not ready. He only has seven games under his belt and really the first two should not be counted. Rally around and support him and he will be successful.

Chan can’t fire up college players. They are not professionals, they are big kids. Chan seems to recruit well, but he’s terrible at getting his teams ready to play. Tech needs to run Tashard and the other backs straight at Maryland and pass only as often as it takes to keep the defense semi-honest. Defense & kicking can win a lot of games if the offense doesn’t give it away (as R Ball did against UGA last year). Go Jackets!

Cut some hair. I’ve never seen so much hair hanging out of helmets in my life. Why? What’s the deal? Is this some kind of Samson thing where hair is the key to strength? What would Coach Dodd have thought of all that hair hanging out of helmets? Kinda makes me think that these players are too individualistic and on an ego trip. Cut the hair. TB gets about a B- in my estimation. One thing he doesn’t do is make bonehead mistakes at critical times and that elevates him out of the ‘C’ range. He’s been consistently average. I agree that Nesbitt or even Booker should get some looks if the ‘O’ isn’t moving it down the field or if TB is off. However, I don’t get to watch practice, so my opinion (like 99.9% of all us bloggers) isn’t very informed. The most encouraging things I’ve seen so far have been the play of the freshman players, special teams as a whole (except for the muffed gift to UVA), and P. Wheeler. Overall, kickoff coverage has improved tremendously. Moving it back another 5 yards had me really concerned after last year’s coverage breakdowns, but they’ve really stepped it up. I’m glad the Turtles upset Rutgers. That’s a good eye opener. Friedgen still has game and the Jackets better be as ready this Saturday as they were last Saturday. Get it done !

It takes two…solid play at quarterback and wide reciever. I was down on Taylor after the loss to Virginia, but after watching the Clemson game, the wide recievers have to start making some of those more difficult catches. There were 4-5 drops I can remember…if the reciever catch those, Taylor’s numbers look pretty good in that game and his confidence gets a big boost.
All that said, a little competition is good (Nesbitt)…look how Harrington has responded for the Falcons the last two weeks.

Tinkydog, Are we really off the blog subject or what ? Anyway, I tend to agree with you on the hair situation. Unfortunately, it’ll take a mandate from the NCAA to get these kids to go to the barber as the long locks are at epidemic proportions from the NFL down the the high school level. I think at some point we decided to let individualism take precedence over team when it comes to personal appearance. At the college level my view is, if a school is providing you with a free college education, meals, housing, etc., and an opportunity to succeed in life, it’s not too much to ask for you to look decent. Call me old fashioned.

Hey Spike,
Tech has lost to UGA - no one runs from that. But don’t tell me that they don’t get up for the UGA game - 15-12, 14-7 and 19-14 are hardly lack of effort showings the past 3 years…it is a big game - that’s life - UGA was better. Teams are far from perfect - no blanket statements can or should be made by anyone about any team always doing one thing, like getting up for all big games. Tech is on the right path - it may take a coaching change to realize that, but they have better depth than in past years in many areas and will win their share of big games.

Variety is the spice of life. Miles at LSU did the behind the back pass against the old ball coach who is noted for those kind of things himself. Dodd would have the lonesome end that never came to the huddle, Dooley the fleeflecker. You don’t do those plays just to surprise the sleeping opposition, you do them to entertain you own troops. About the only excitement in Gailey’s offense is throwing once a season to the tight end. I will admit the Bennett at receiver and Choice in at quarterback was a brief moment of what I had in mind and the laughter and fun at the press conference was worth the risk on the field. Now that the entire football world is using that play lets come up with something original.

A bit more on Bennett at QB. Having watched the games, I can’t see how his play at the position can be overtly criticized.
Let’s take it game by game:
ND - First game, some jitters and some very nice throws. Became clear that our run game was dominant, so not much passing required. Win.
Samford - Early blowout. TB is 8 for 9 then he’s out. What else is required.
BC - BC absolutely STUFFED our run game. We had to go total pass. 40 attempts, no picks, and a nice deep ball to Thomas. Bennett didn’t win the game, but he didn’t lose it. It was a total team loss.
UVA - Great TD pass to Thomas; freak pick — bounce off a helmet early. I didn’t see the game so I can’t comment further.
Clemson - Solid game management. Had 3 drops early, one each by Thomas, Peek and Smith. One bad throw all day - the pick down in the Red Zone. Executed the game plan. Gailey and Bond put the clamps on in the 3rd Quarter. They had several opportunities to catch Clemson on play action, but that’s not Taylor’s decision - he doesn’t call the plays. He ran the plays he was told to run.
If anyone sees anything I didn’t let me know.

son_sir, The subject is team motivation. Hair is an ego trip by those who want individual attention for their over-inflated egos. Just like celebrating an individual play when you’re down a couple of touchdowns. Egos are ruining the team sport of football. Can you imagine Johnny Unitas with hair hanging out of his helmet? You can certainly call me old fashion ‘cause I’m 63 and would like to return to the way football was in the Dodd era…..clean, mean and team played. No celebration for doing your d%#n job. Just celebration for winning the game and making your school and fans proud. It just ain’t happening with me and the hair out of the helmet and beating your chest after a tackle you should have made anyway. ‘nough said??

LongBeachJacket, I think that is a really good look at what Taylor has done. I have said for awhile now that I am really comfortable with Bennett. Yeah, he may not win the games for us but he sure hasn’t lost them yet either. I felt like he had some great throws on Saturday that should have been caught. Primarily the deep pass down the middle to Smith. A big time reciever who beats the coverage needs to come up with that pass. His game management and decision making have been great too. The players love him and support him in the huddle and I think that is invaluable. He also has been making great decisions, other than the pick this past Saturday, but his poise to recognize an opening to get the first down and take it has certainly impressed me. I am one Tech fan that proudly stands behind Bennett.

Bennett is doing a workman-like job. He is certainly doing his part. If the receivers can’t or are afraid to catch the ball, that is not Bennett’s fault. I have seen much worse. A few more snaps to Nesbitt could have cost us the game. Let him warm the bench a while.

Clay, thanks for the vine. Some on these blogs have referred to my observations as “delusional”. I was beginning to wonder if we had been at the same games or if there were two different Tech games going on each weekend. Your reflections confirm to me that I may have actually been at the real games and may have actually seen what I think I saw. And what I saw is that Bennett has done his job thus far. Undeserving of any harsh criticism.
Also, the 15 yard run for the first down at a key point in the third quarter Saturday was a very, good decision—and well executed. He saw he had the corner and got just beyond the first down marker then scooted out of bounds. Textbook.
Bennett is a drop back QB but he can run it in certain spots.
Everyone thought George Godsey was a statue and then he rips a 30-yd TD run against UGA in 2000.
I think Bennett is a lot like Godsey and I hope he will get things rolling more as the season goes along.
His passing numbers will never be what Godsey’s were because we are much more run oriented than we were in Friedgen’s system. So long as we take care of the football and score enough to win, that’s fine.
The goal is just that, to win.
I’d rather win 3-0 every time than lose 49-45 and put up a bunch of meaningless offensive stats.

dla, Thanks for the true reality check. I’ve been following Tech since the mid-70s. My dad was there during the Dodd era. If you look at Dodd’s record year in and year out he didn’t win 10 every year, but he had some great teams and a tremendous run in the 50s. And he did it with integrity. Coach Curry was quoted as saying of Tech under Dodd “We were the palace guards of Southern College Football. We won a lot and graduated 90%+ and everyone hated us for it.”
Gailey has the type of integrity and the patience to “do things the right way” at Tech. That is the only way you can do it. You build for the long term. And you do it the right way…which is the only way it should be done.
It is significant that Chan hasn’t had a losing season at Tech. He hasn’t won enough to satisfy some, but I feel that he will, in time, get his due.
If you look around the ACC, you can see that Tech is as well-positioned for long-term success as any other program. To “blow up” the program and start over would be a terrible thing.
I think D Rad is too strategic and savvy to fall into that trap, irrespective of the carping that may be heard in some corners of Tech Nation.

I certainly want Bennet to do well but I don’t know how you can defend his performance this year by saying he hasn’t done anything to lose games. BC dared us to pass and we didn’t get it done. UVA has one of the worst pass defenses around and all you can say is that TB hit a nice pass at the start of the game?
Sure the interception was a fluke kind of play, but how many passes has he had knocked down at the line this year? As tall as he is, there is no excuse for that. He rarely takes his eyes off the primary receiver, and when he does, he checks down to the receiver that has no chance of getting the 1st on 3rd down. I don’t like beating up on 18-22 year old kids, especially when I know they are doing their best, but if that is the best QB we could find while we suffered through Reggie, we are in big, big trouble.

If you want to watch a 5 star QB throw the ball each season, then enroll or move to USC or Texas. Face it, we’ll have to work w/ what we’ve got and I think we have a QB who won’t lose games b/c of dumb mistakes. If we shore up our catching and Tenuta keeps mixing things up, then Tech will be fine. Do you think that a new coach will start bringing in the elite QB’s?? No. But sunny southern california or 100,000 blondes from Texas sure will. Stop this madness of “Can Chan” and embrace a steadily improving program. We’re positioning nicely to make a string of wins against UGA and they know it. Otherwise, they wouldn’t spend their time on these blogs. Curiousity is born from fear.

Are some of you guys blind? TB is horrible and Tech survived thanks to Choice, the Defense and Clemsons FG kicker. I see better QB play out of high school QB’s, in fact Roswell’s QB would start over TB right now. The guy is inaccurate, arm is marginal, feet seems to be made of cement, what is the positive. Heck he may be smart but being a computer geek doesn’t make you a QB. Doesn’t make mistakes because he doesn’t make any plays. Playmakers will make mistakes but they also make plays. If Bennet remains the QB, Tech will be lucky to qualify for any BOWL and if they do, get ready for the blue field in Boise or the empty Emerald Bowl played so early in the Bowl Season, some teams haven’t even played out their regular season schedule. I hope they are getting the other guys ready because he is painful to watch. I’d rather them run Choice or Dwyer twice and just punt on third down then to keep watching this statue on third down.

Good article. First, I would try to establish the run first to open up some passing opportunities until the confidence and timing factors are in place. I would experiment a little bit with Dywer and Choice in the backfield at the same time, assuming both can black o.k. Also bring in Nesbitt to get a feel for the game better with direct snaps, Qb draws, h-back play. Booker may need to get a look as well. Bennett is still showing some poise, arm strength, accuracy, etc..but needs a few slight adjustments including maybe more loft on the deep passes to let the receivers run under it better. At the same time, Donley and maybe the two punt returners need some reps at WR inorder for the receivers corp to gain confidence. Once the passes start to be completed and we’re not too far off then this offense is terrific. Another good thing about Bennett is he is not turning the ball over that much and throwing the ball away at times. I would say 10% to 15% of the passes could have been completed with a slightly better pass or a good catch. I would even try Manly if the passing game remains weak. There use to be a pro QB name Pat Haden who was small and not a strong arm who had a good sense for the games. But first try Donley a few plays at Wr and put Dwyer and Choice in a few plays at the same time to see if this does’nt shake things up.

Chan needs to understand these are still kids and not Pro’s. They need motivation, they will gain maturity, but that comes with time usually after college.
Three minutes of emotion can give enough of a rush to force the other team into a turnover, or to be able to streach out and make that catch. Then, emotion and excitement feed on themselves.
You see it when a big play happens, one side is up, the other side starts to drop (unless they have good motivation).
This is why we will continue to lose to those we should beat. A lack of motivation from the coach.
However, I will give Chan this, he at least has delegated that task to a capable Choice.

Some things never change…including Gailey. He is not a coach fit for the college game - a nice man, honest man, great guy, good pro coach. He is not aggressive or imaginative on offense, says himself that he doesn’t try to motivate his players (ok for pros making millions $, but not for college game). He was ready to leave last year, so what does that say about his desire to be at Tech now? This is what we have until he is gone, and it won’t change much year to year - 7-9 wins.

I like the new intensity in practice - it’s long overdue. Contrary to popular fan opinion, “let downs” aren’t a function of solely being lethargic on game day, but they are a function of being lethargic during the week of preparation. When you keep reading the papers and getting pats on your back on campus all week after a big game, you’ll tend to become slightly overconfident and will perhaps not focus in your game film sessions, study the upcoming game plan, and concentrate in practice quite like you would when your back is against the wall becuase you think you already know it all. As a result, when you finally take the field you’re not nearly as prepared for the game at hand. Keeping the intensity up at practice with 1’s going on 1’s should definitely help. Motivation from the coach does help, but emotions only carry for a couple of minutes into the game. After that, it’s all about knowing your assignments and being in the right positions to make plays, and that comes from preparation during the week.
Just my take.

Have to agree with those who say Bennett is doing a decent job. With all of the drops and the limited attempts per the play calling, his stats suffer and it’s hard to evaluate his true passing ability. (How do you get into a rhythm when you throw 7-10 times a game?) But as others have noted, he hasn’t thrown away any games and that’s refreshing after the last few years. Make no mistake - this is a rushing offense with a competent QB and an immature receiver corp. But until Bennett is throwing 30 times a game, making poor decisions and giving up multiple picks, it’s hard to pin much responsibility for this team’s shortcomings on the QB.

I did have one other observation while watching the Clemson game. It seemed every down your linebackers and db’s timed their blitzes perfectly. They had a full head of steam going after the qb. Tech has had this personality for years (since Chan arrived?). The players are ‘up’ for the tough opponents and then they relax for the others. This leads to at least one loss during the season to a team that they should have beaten easily on paper.
As head coach, it is Chan’s responsibility to ensure that losses to those types of teams don’t occur. The blame for those losses fall squarely on his shoulders.

I, Like many others, have been frustrated with GT football over the years. I have vented and blogged also. But I have never written negative comments about any of the players. And, I wish it would stop. They are students - trying to do their best. If you want to take it out on anyone, vent toward the coaches. They are the ones that have to make the decisions whether to play someone or not, sub a player or not, or change the line-up of the team. The kids that play are all great and doing the best they can - leave them alone.

Bennett is doing a fine job. He has not made many mistakes. And, a couple of balls would make a big difference in his stats if his receivers had done their jobs.
Gailey has put a great team on the field. He has their respect and he has their confidence. And, he continues to recruit well.
There is not a team on the schedule, including UGA, that will take Georgia Tech for granted. There may be a few UGA fans who think UGA should take Tech for granted, but I assure you the UGA coaching staff is not.
As far a motivational talks go, that is the stuff of movies. The game is complex and the coaches have a week to get the players ready. A few minutes of rah rah before the game will not make a difference.
Some in this blog have mentioned Dodd. In the years that I played for him, he never gave a Rah Rah talk. But, he had us prepared and we went out and played the game and we always thought we were going to win. We didn’t win them all, but we always expected that we would.

Chan is the head guy. He is responsible for everything. However, I have to agree with the few. He’s making progress in my opinion, as slow as it may be. I’ll hold judgement until the season is over and look at the big picture. back to the original subject now. Each coach has his own ways. As long as Chan is the coach, let him handle motivation how he sees fit. As a coach, you know your players and what they need, and you know which ones are going to step up and be the motivators. The coach is just overseeing it. Like I said to the little boy at the BC game, it’s tough to be a Tech fan, especially when we have so many whiners and so few pumped up, on your feet, scream your lungs out, fans. The guy that’s the most fired up might be the guy sitting off to the side by himself. The key to getting a team ready to play takes place Monday-Friday. Has Gailey fallen short of that task? Maybe but he’s not the first TECH coach to do that. As many of you have said it’s tough being a TECH fan due to the many let downs. This didn’t just start 5 years ago. Go back and check the schedules over the last say 25-30 years and see how many games TECH “shoulda” won. It’s the same in b-ball too. Maybe it’s the mentality of the type of athlete we recruit. I don’t know but check the results and you’ll see I’m right.

I too find it disheartening that people are bagging on the players. They are just kids, and not getting paid for what they do. If you want to bag on someone bag on the coach like I do!
The recievers aren’t catching the ball? Sounds like a coaching issue! Maybe they need to emphasize in that area a little bit! He surely needs to fire up the team before games too! What a dumb a** to say that he doesn’t need to. He should go back and be mediocre in the NFL. Ohh that’s right noone wants him as their HC - even teams he has history with!

Why do you think you are qualified to judge Chan?

In the emails I’ve gotten in response to the site we think we are doing a pretty good job of judging Gailey.
It’s obvious that the team has some coaching issues (some is being nice) and his results can be judged by all. Most people we’ve talked to are tired of the mediocre seasons.
