Leslie, Munroe commit to Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A big recruiting weekend for Georgia Tech football got even better on Sunday when the Yellow Jackets received commitments from Fresno, Calif., safety Brandon Leslie and Miami linebacker Malcolm Munroe.
Leslie, who attends Edison High School, and Munroe, who attends Coral Reef High, were part of a large group of prospects who attended Tech’s 13-3 victory over then-No. 13 Clemson.
One of the biggest names in that group, Thomasville High defensive tackle Brandon Thompson, and his parents said the visit went well but he has not made a commitment.

Matt, That’s great news for the program. Where do these recruits rank nationally at their respective positions. I realize that is not always an accurate indicator but it does give some clues on potential.
There are a lot of opinions flying around on Mike’s postgame blog as to the meaning of this weekend’s win over Clemson.
I’ll point out one key point that was missed. Two of our top Freshmen from last year’s stellar recruiting class had significant impact: DJ Donley - punt block, Morgan Burnett - Key interception. And it is also worth mention that Derrick Morgan was in on many plays.
It does show a lot of promise for the future that some of the big recruits from last year are making significant contributions.
I like the looks of the future.
I just hope some of the “Can Channers” … as observed on the other blog can realize that results are never, ever perfect in college football, but we have a lot of the pieces in place for sustained success. Defense —- no doubt. Special Teams — becoming “lights out” under Coach Kelly. Offense — Give Bond a chance to grow into the position…he’s called good games so far. You can’t blame the OC for passes that receivers drop. Check the replays from yesterday if any questions.
Coach Gailey is managing the program well and the foundation for long term sustained success is in place.
Folks who are still upset that we lost to UVA might care to note that UVA is 4-1. They’re actually a pretty decent team and we came real close….that’s just the way football is.
The next two weeks are going to be tough. Even odds says we should be 1-1 on this road trip. Would be great if we can go 2-0. 0-2 would be a disappointment after this weekend’s performance. That said, have to take them one at a time. Maryland — this week.
GO JACKETS!!!!!!

Longbeach, I believe you are delusional but hope springs eternal. Perhaps too much California sunshine. But to answer your question, Munroe is a 3 Star and 18th ranked Strong side LB. Leslie is also a 3 star and 37th ranked Safety.

Thanks Jackets55. Sounds like these guys are solid recruits. Coach Tenuta generally “coaches up” his guys on that side of the ball so I hope these guys will be contributors when its all said and done.

What makes you think I’ll be here in three years to see these guys on the field?

No question recruiting is getting better but the seesaw on the field continues. Let’s hope we now are on a run. The big question now is why is D. J. Donley not getting some reps at wr? He does’nt have to start but to me play a group of them and go more with the guy who holds onto the ball both catching it and after catching it. Some of the throws are actually pretty impressive. But no question the more we can nationally recruit the better off we will be in terms of bring in some top talent. Many outside the region may have more of a appreciation for an education that Tech offers. That said if we can get these Ga. recruits in here and stay in school that is big plus.

Any of you think Gailey has it to take this team past 7-5 and to even beat ugag is delusional. Period. And 7-5 is not acceptable year in and year out. How many Gailey had to develop a QB? He hasn’t put a D1 Qb on the field since he’s been here.
Who’s got an NFL opening that Chan can go flirt with? Chan, next time take it!! So Dan Rad can get on with finding somebody that we can all rally around.
Thanks alot Coach Braine!

LongBeachJacket:
You are correct in that we have alot of the pieces in place. We only lack a head coach. The recruiters have done a wonderful job in getting the kids here who not only want to play D1 football but also who want to take on the challenges of the GT academics. We are proud of eveything happening on the Flats except for the performance of the head coach.

You can get all the great recruits you want, but Chan will figure out a way to make them mediocre.

“Taylor Bennett ranks 14th in passing efficiency in the 12-team ACC” Now THERE’S some headline material for future recruits! HA! Where’s old whatshisname (last year’s starting qb) when you need him??!!

That passing efficiency just tells you what Chan Gailey is all about.
The man doesn’t even want to take phone calls on his CALL IN SHOW and you guys stick up for him?
The win was great, I was there cheering for the team the whole time. You guys should know by now that’s Gailey 101 - give ‘em a good win every now and then and they’ll forget how horrible of a coach I am at least 50% of the time.

Why don’t one of you genious folks step up and coach this team. He is slowly building a steady, respectable squad. Its a reflection of his personality. Slow and steady. Granted, we don’t run the statue of liberty or throw deep every other down but we progressing under a new OC. It takes time. And if any of you watched the Clemson game, I did see alot of dropped passes by very well thrown balls. Its not entirely Bennett’s fault when it comes to passing efficiency. Stats sometimes lie. James Johnson needs to get over what ailes him and STEP UP!! The pieces will fall into place.
By the way, I thought Booker was #2 behind Bennett. Anyone hearing rumors of inserting Booker if Bennett continues to be mediocre? Probably b/c Bennett rarely throws INT’s. any comments??

Having attended 4 of 5 games, I will tell you this…Taylor Bennett does a very good job of game management and decision making. For example, deciding to run for 15 yds and a key 1st down at a critical point last Sat.
Also, he generally makes good throws and good reads. The only bad throw was the one he was trying to throw out of bounds and he should have thrown it about 10 yds deeper (i.e. into the stands). That one was a nice pick by the Clemson DB.
Except for James Johnson, who has not been 100% since week 1, Bennett is working with a woefully inexperienced receiving corps, as evidenced by numerous drops. As the receivers improve, Bennett’s numbers will improve.
That said, I like the idea of working Nesbitt or Booker for a few series here and there. Bond seems more attuned to doing this and I hope he will have free reign to work the backups a bit and occasionally let Bennett observe a series to get a different view on what the defense is doing.
Finally, regarding coaching, it is frustrating to see some of the inconsistencies when you see the potential for breakout success, and the accountability starts with the coach. That said, if you look around the country, outside of a handful of programs, inconsistency is a part of college football (7 of top 13 losing last week). It’s 18-22 year olds who have to go to class and study (especially at Tech) and not PROs. When they put it together, like last week for Tech, appreciate it for what it is…a solid effort by a bunch of dedicated young men.
The only other person I could think of who would be possibly more attractive as coach at Tech is Ken Whisenhunt. I doubt he’ll be available for quite some time … if ever. Coach Gailey has assembled a good staff (as O’Leary did after a few years). I’ll ride with these guys and take my chances.
GO JACKETS!!!!!
