One down, plenty more to go

Wow. This is my fourth season covering Georgia Tech football, and I’ve never seen the defense any more fired up than it was today against No. 13 Clemson. Philip Wheeler and Jahi Word-Daniels and Anthony Barnes were throwing their bodies at ballcarriers time after time.

This is the defense I expected to see from these guys. The 13-3 victory over the Tigers was quite an accomplishment.

But can they keep it up? That’s the challenge, because this must-win game was just the first of six in ACC play if the Yellow Jackets are to retain their Coastal Division title and play for the ACC championship.

Tech won’t get there unless something can restore the confidence Taylor Bennett seems to have lost. Bennett was really struggling out there (and getting little help at times from some of his receivers).

A great victory for Tech, an amazing performance on special teams, especially by D.J. Donley and a gutsy, gutsy effort by Tashard Choice. But defense, special teams and a talented and charismatic tailback can’t do it all. There has to be at least some passing game. If that appears, this could still be a special team.

it wasnt pretty but a win is a win is always a win. baller award to that Tech defense. they were very fiesty and looked like the defense of old today. i counted seven sacks and at least 5 or 6 hurried passes. i have to admit that every time Davis, Spiller and Ford tocuhed the ball i held my breath, those guys are game breakers and i remember too well what happened last year. great gameplan from the Tenuta defense, player of the game has to go to Phillip Wheeler, that kid is truly special, first round potential. the offense scares me, well the passing game was non-existent, Choice looked very good against a pretty good defense. but the offense has to be more balanced. my hat goes off to D.Brooks as well, great kicks from this guy all day, and great field goals from Bell as well. like i said it wasnt pretty but i’ll take this much neede win against a quality opponent..

Great win!

HOWEVER,

Outside of CHoice running the ball the offense stinks! Is Gailey calling the plays?????

AS big as this win is, can we please play to WIN the game and not to Lose.

Clemson helped a ton, the offense nneds big help!

It certainly wasn’t offense. Good victory but the main worry on the road when another team like Maryland may get ahead, is…we can’t score. Why?? Low percentage (long) passes, few passes to the TE and none to the running backs. And, never over the middle.

That was awesome defense but our passing game is not good. We are going to have to have better offense if we are going to make it back to the ACC Championship.

Why did we win?

  1. Great running game.
  2. Great special teams.
  3. Great defense.
  4. We always win at least one game we aren’t supposed to.

Why did Clemson lose? 1. Poor special teams. 2. Their coach is worse than ours.

I cannot figure out why Clemson didn’t stack up against the run and shut down our running game like UVA and BC. It isn’t like our passing game was working - it actually looked dreadful once again.

Worries 1. Our third down coversion rate is still terrible.
2. Bennett and the receivers have no cohesiveness. This must improve or we are looking at a .500 season. 3. Maryland looked good against Rutgers. We have them and Miami on the road.

Great win for our team though. Let’s enjoy it - Go Jackets!

i watched the game on TV and the crowd looked rowdy and got behind the team when they needed it the most. Maryland looked pretty good today and all we need is a team with a bit of momentum on their home field. we win that one and we are back in the mix. once again the passing game is really bothering me right now. we are not going to win many games like this, we have to get the QB and the recievers on the same page. we set up the running game for playaction. Bennett wasnt tocuhed all game, a few flushes out of the pocket including an interception that should have been thrown away. our defense just really showed its true colors today and i cant help but give Tenuta his props. lets enjoy this one tech fans we worked hard for it.

Christmas comes early in 2007. Thank you Clemson for your generous gift. Silly penalties, sloppy special teams and an unimaginative offense.

Gailey’s offense still stinks.

The best that I can say about our team is that we were good enough NOT to return Clemson’s gift.

I’ll take it. Any win over Clemson is a good win.

Great effort by the defense and Deuce. One of the reporters stated as 2nd half started that cg to win was going for ball control in 2nd half. This when score is 7-3. Fortunately for us Deuce was up to the task. How long before someone gets some and finds a head coach. Games like this you can only feel the team won in spite of cg. Will enjoy this one but don’t feel there will be many more this year. Please Lord let me be wrong.

GTBL: Let’s be honest, we’re probably out of the ACC title race.

Techster@heart pretty much summed up my thoughts on this game, not to mention that their kicker missed 4 (4!!) field goals.

But we needed a win to get off the ACC shnide and this is a key win for us.

Did anybody see the Tech gal flipping the bird during the called-back Clemson TD? Classless and an embarrassment. She shouldn’t be allowed back at a Tech game, or at least sit her up high where the camera won’t find her.

One of two things is going on: 1) cg has got Bond in a headlock, or 2) he’s got him in a strangle-hold. PATHETIC play calling. Smacks of Gailey and not Bond.

By IWrecken

If you all sit back, take a deep breath - every Tech fan will come back down to earth because WE ALL know Chan Gailey can’t coach. The D once again actually came to play while the offense IS OFFENSIVE once again.

Reality is - Tech will continue to be a mediocre team run by a mediocre coach. Win today, lose tomorrow, score not points, have no energy, fans lose interest.

Chan Gailey has changed the face of Tech football - lackluster, no energy, no interest and better still no Top 25, ACC Champions or beating GA. Big deal they beat Clemson, we all know they will lose again and again before the season is over.

7-5 or 6-6 same story different season.

TomJoad You are saying what I’ve been saying all along. Fill in the blank. Gailey has (Billy O’Brien, Patrick Nix, John Bond) in a strangle hold. Gailey’s true colors were shown when he dubbed himself OC and HC. When that drew him too much criticism, he started hiring shills for OC’s. As long as Chan Gailey is Head Coach, he will dictate the offense. It doesn’t matter who they “say” is the OC…it’s Gailey.

This is what being a Tech fan is all about. We display flashes of sheer brilliance (the defense for the entire game except for one possesion:like the GA game last year) and beat a relly good opponent after getting shellacked by them this year. This makes you believe in what can be done. Then we self-destruct against Virginia (droped punt/jump offside on 4th and 1) like we did last week (and did against Georgia last year: thanks for the memories Reggie). I want to like Chan Gailey, I realy like the assitant coaches, but I still harken back to the best days of Bobby Ross and George O’Leary (who we should have taken back no matter what happened at Notre Dame) As I tell me friends, we are just good enough to break our hearts. Today proves this.

P.S.: Will we ever find another QB like Hamilton or Godsey?

By Jon

September 29, 2007 8:22 PM | Link to this

I’m glad to have a win - but that was ugly. We aren’t going anywhere with an offense that can’t pass. Reminds me of the Falcons with Vick except Taylor can’t run either.

Gailey mediocrity is alive and well. If we want to go anywhere beyond 7 or 8 wins a year he’s got to go.

ARE YOU LISTENING DAN?? CAN CHAN!!!

By What the Hell

September 29, 2007 8:25 PM | Link to this

As much as I like to see the Clemson faithful driving their tractors home in tears, I have to say this game frustrates me. It’s a perfect example of Chan Gailey football - when he starts to sense that the alumni and fans are getting really unhappy, he actually bothers to prepare the players, and (once again) Tech becomes a spoiler for a top 20 team. No doubt we’ll get stomped by some weak sister in the ACC later this season because Gailey will feel secure and won’t bother to prepare. Coulda, woulda, shoulda … it’s the Gailey motto.

Furthermore, Tech’s lackluster offense was only offset by Clemson’s absolutely horrible offense and special teams. We weren’t that good, but they were terrible. We won’t be so lucky later on.

So once again Tech is headed for a mediocre season, an almost certain loss to Georgia, a bid to some non-descript bowl game, and then a probable loss at that bowl game. It’s like watching the same TV rerun over and over.

Bill O’Brien was a visionary coach who was groomed by Ralph Friedgen and had HUGE problems with cg during his one year stretch as OC (field/booth/field/chan calling plays) I shudder to think what we could have done with Fridgen or O’Brien calling plays (no disrespect to Nix or Bond who are controled on high)with a weapon like Calvin Johnson.

Ga Tech has the sorriest offense in major college football. There is no passsing game because the coach only passes when he thinks he has to…therefore…we aren’t any good at it…last in the country on 3rd down conversions. We haven’t had a good QB since George Godsey left and Chan Gailey arrived, since he doesn’t believe in passing he has no clue how to coach and dveelop a quarterback….. Doesn’t look like that will change until the new coach arrives…one can only pray.

Kudos to a great performance by our defense. Also, it was a great workmanlike effort from Tashard.

BUT what is Chan doing. He must go now!!

Has he ever heard of “throwing on first down”??? It might take some pressure off of Tashard. And by the way, when we threw a little in the first half, our receivers could not catch passes. That does not bode well if teams are going to force us to pass. But it probably will not matter because Chan will try to run the ball when the opposition has 22 people in the box!!

Why is it that when Chan Gailey moves Ted roof out of the Def. Cord. position he is villified and can’t do anything right. He brings in Tenuta and that is the reason Tech can win games. Give me a break. Tech just had a huge win. Give Gailey a little credit. Don’t penalize the guy for not being “press friendly” and realize you have a coach that has acheived more than the majority of the coaches to ever coach at Tech. Enjoy the great win, but remember, you are going to run off one of the best football minds around.

This was a game we needed to win. When you win by double digits against a ranked team, it’s probably not time to complain about the offensive strength and Gailey’s woes. Our offense looked decent though not good at UVA, I was there.

I wouldn’t say we’re back on track yet, but this win does a lot to get us back on track. Keep in mind that one of our losses is to a top 10 team. The other loss was one that could have gone either way against a team that will likely be in the top 25 on Monday, maybe next Monday.

Now, here’s a question. All the SECers love to rip on the ACC. Yet, our number 6 team beat their number 4 team. Our number 8 team beat the Big Least’s number two team. And Virginia is flat ROCKING Pitt. Tell me why the ACC sucks again?

The guys I sat with were talking about how we “destroyed” Clemson.

We got lucky to come out of there with the win.

Dropped passes were Clemson’s downfall, not the missed FGs. The FGs were long, and any kicker can have a bad day from that kind of distance (30-yarder excluded).

We are awfully lucky that their QB didn’t throw over our blitz more often. I’m glad we got pressure on the QB, but you just can’t blitz 90% of the time against a good team and expect to win.

That being said, there’s a reason I’m at home discussing the game with other fans, and not in the coaches’ office discussing it with them. So maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about.

But when all is said and done, a win is a win, and 3-2 sounds much better than 2-3.

We won, thank God, but Gailey still has to go. I cannot watch his conservative play calling without going crazy. I do not understand why he has to play offense defensively. We see it game after game the other coach goes for the throat all the time. Gailey is sure to take a chance away from the team in which they could deliver the death blow (3-1 on the 35) but he refuses. We cannot win on a regular basis with a coach that will not be agressive. One more thing today was more of the same run on 1st and 2nd down and then talk about how hard it is to convert 3rd down. I see he can understand the % of times you will make it on 3 and 7 but I cannot understand why he dosen’t change the play selection before you get there !

Better QBs around the corner. None of the other coaches brought in ranked QBs to Tech…Chan is though. That’s the missing piece, and the recieving corps is not doing their thing. This is the worst play I have seen from our recievers in the last decade. I think the new scheme with Bond and inexperience all around is giving them a tough time. O Leary had no offense after Ralph left for Maryland. And all the Tech fans who scream that Godsey was a great quarterback, his Sr year was flat and awful after the 1st quater of the UVA game (4 TDs) and that game was in Oct! Granted I agree that the QBs since have been anything but stellar. But O’Leary never had a defense like we have. Special teams has been great this year (except fumbled punt last week after Jamal Evans went out of the game) So lay off Chan. Anyone who says Clemson gave us the game is crazy. Its not like they laid down. We created turnovers and sacked them 7 times. Held those 2 chumps to under 40 yards for the day and were in the backfield all day. Tech has not had a consistent defense like this in any span since I came to Tech (‘90). Even the great O’Leary would get many points scored on him. Our program was LOSING in the mid 90’s and you guys act as if Tech has gone backwards with Chan. Well except for a few good years with OLeary and ‘90, Tech football was not on the map. We had losing seasons! I understand the frustration but who would you really want to come coach that would be better? Tech isn’t going to pay out millions for a big name like UNC or Bama did. I agree the play calling is quite telegraphic. But we just beat the #13 team in the land, not Duke. So lay off the coach. His team was really fired up and with time we will paint in those holes where we lose the ones we aren’t supposed to lose. I like these days b/c we have won more big games with Chan than anyone. I know we made a deal with the devil and got FLA St. deleted from the schedule for 4 years (a compromise with the expansion which included only road games at UNC for 2 years straight in hoops!) but the all mighty O’Leary NEVER beat Fla State! He came close but so has Chan. So lay off the man. I do wish he’d ligthen up on the reigns with the offense. But who knows. Maybe a large part of the conservative offense is that they can’t function well yet. If my recivers were dropping balls like we did in the first half that were thrown well and pretty good…I’d stick with the ol’ reliable too! Props to Choice. He was hammered last year and he stuck the Clemson defense’s face in it today. So we had a 2 game hiccup. The offense is still improving and the defense showed they are the men that we have cheered about for the past 5 years. We are tops in the nation on takeways for a reason. So I don’t see when that is a consistent statistic as “gifts” from Clemson. I see it as Great Yellow Jacket Football!

Go Jackets!!

Clemson didn’t “give” us the game, but by the same token, we didn’t “take” the game from them.

We had several opportunities to stomp on their throats; we didn’t.

They also had several opportunities to close the gap; they didn’t.

We played better than they did, but both teams played below their levels. We just didn’t play to as low a level as they did.

Great win Jackets. Finally a little moxie from the start and a full 4 quarters’ worth of in-your-face. Clempson fans may whine about the kicker, but the way to avert that is to get 1st downs and TDs. GT Nation knows that all too well. A few items needing attention. 1) 3rd down conversions. 2) CB and S pass coverage. 3) getting more vertical with the passing game. Watching the AU/UF game, the CBs are jamming receivers at the line, disrupting the routes. That buys time for the pass rush. Perhaps that would save us from having to watch 3rd&10s, and 3rd&17s becoming 1st downs. For the passing game, seems like 7-12 yards across the middle is open and swing passes too. This game was a must have. Two key road games await. Go Jackets and keep your heads in the game.

All of you idiots who say that GT has no offense b/c of Gailey. HEY, I saw at least 3 dropped passes in the first two series…so as a coach, he went with a sure thing…Choice. If we had actually caught those passes, it could have Bennett more confident and allowed us to open up the pass a bit more. Our recievers are NOT stepping up. That’s the problem. Watch the game again and tell me I’m I’m not losing it.

The real difference in the game was the special team play. Clemson missed multiple field goals, had a blocked punt and fumbled a punt return.

Tech had great special team play today on all counts. That is a big improvement over last year.

The offenses looked equally inept. I have said for quite a while that Tommy Bowden and Chan Gailey were the two worst coaches in the ACC. With Tommy Bowden on the sideline, we always will have a chance, and I think Clemson can say the same about Chan and Tech.

With that being said, it is a big win. The offense didn’t lose it and the defense was very good. Lets hope the offense will get better. If Chan will take off the headset, we might score a few more points.

Go Jackets.

Tokyo Jacket, if your pizza is late, do you not criticize them for that? Have you ever worked in a pizza place?

If your food comes to your table incorrect, do you not send it back? When is the last time you worked in a kitchen?

If you take your car to the shop and get it back, but you notice something is not quite right, do you not take it back to the mechanic? How many cars have you rebuilt?

Save your rhetoric for someone who pays no attention to things like logic and reason. Too many smart people here.

It appears the seesaw is back, the trend. Take the opposite of what is expected and that is expected. Tech played outstanding. Many of the passes were catcheable. Tech needs to find a possession receiver. A Kerry Watkins, A Jimmy Robinson. Before we get too excited, Clemson’s offense looked a little flat and intimidated. Something was missing that has’nt been apparent in their earlier games. At the same time Tech’s defense came to play and so did the special teams. It looks like the Gailey offense though is back, very predictable at times. The passing game is litterally inches away from taking off. Maybe more rollouts like Hamilton and Shawn Jones and Godsey use to do will help if Bennett can roll to his right and pass too. No team can be overlooked on this remaining schedule. If this team can focus on game at a time then it could still be a good year. But since the passing game is not jellying I see nothing wrong with trying to establish the run first then try and pass intermixen. The problem is it’s back to predictability and third down obvious passing situations and against VT, Miami, UGA, that means tee off time.

Can D. J. Donley play some WR now verse waiting till the end of the year and can Grant play some WR aka, Charlie Rogers during the Fridge era? These current receivers will be good with experience but it would be helpful if someone could catch now say verse the end of the year by the time the Dawgs come around. Some people are game day players more than practice players, maybe Donley is in that role.

A little history lesson for those who may not have been Tech fans at the time or too young or involved in other activities. Some of this may be off but it gets to the point. Curry left for Bama after the 1986 season, 5-5-1 approx. He had an outstanding defense in his last two or three years called the Black Watch under Don Lindsey, ranked 4th Nationally in 1985 led by a LB named Ted Roof. Bobby Ross was named the coach in 1987 by Dr. Homer Rice, it was a suprise but one that took the fans in good spirits. Then Ross switched, the first I can remember at Tech, to a prostyle offense and defense with balance. The problem was the players for the scheme were’nt there, particularly at QB and passing blocking and wr’s. The chants in the 1987 and 1988 as the 2-9 and 3-8 seasons progressed was one more loss for Ross. However, if one looked at the games in 1988 many losses wer’net blowouts. Then 1989 started 0-3 and the boos were getting loud. Then it clicked 7 out of 8 wins with Shawn Jones as LB. Then the 1990 team, had to be the most talented in Tech’s history or close to it. Then the book stealing episode of 1991 where William Bell, and another one or two players were either kicked off the team or suspended for one year. Tech was ranked #1 preseason if can remember but that was w/out Bell who was a difference maker at TB. Then Bill Lewis came on the scene and really attrition ate at TEch. 28 players either flunked out, quit or were hurt in three years. Lewis did recruit well they just did’nt hand around. Tech at the end of Ross era was one of four programs to watch out for in the 90’s. Ross only had one recruiting class in the top 20 and that was the one with Shawn Jones, Marco Coleman, etc..at #20 or so. O’leary came on the scene during the 1-10 season and inherited a program in dissaray with little talent. He then proceeded to rebuild the program’s recruiting and many classes finished in the top 25 in recruiting rankings. One of his first recruits was a kid named Joe Hamilton that Danny Smith recruited away from Penn State and Nebraska when Osborne was coach. O’leary recruited a skinny but versatile LB named Keith Brooking as well in 1994. Tech was ranked in the top 10 four times at one point or another during O’leary’s tenure 1998, 1999 2000 (?), and 2001 (early). There was the leaving of Fridge and the coordinators inexperience in 2001 but Tech was close in three or four games kind of like Tech last year and in 1988. O’leary had two key injuries on defense that hurt chances of top 10 finishes, Matt Miller of Marist and Matt Urovich of Chicago. He did finish in top 10 one year and top 25 at least once if not two other times. Gailey has his own style and after a slow adjustment particularly to college situations and recruiting has shown big improvement over the last two years. The problem is consistency and excitement on offense. The new ACC is also a factor and really should help Tech in recruiting no matter who the coach in the future.

Clemson ONCE AGAIN beat themselves yesterday. Tech’s D was good but come on guys - talk about a team that shot themselves in the foot.

Tech is still Tech w/Gailey as the HC. They are mediocre, will never be anything more than what we’ve seen these past 5+ seasons. Not even the defense gets me excited anymore.

This program is STAGNANT, plain and simple!

By firechangailey.com

September 30, 2007 8:46 AM | Link to this

To all the Gailey sympathizers.

Gailey did not win this game. TC & Tenuta won this game.

You guys always say just around the corner. I’ve been saying Gailey was a horrible canidate since we hired him! There is a reason he did last as a cowboy coach and was demoted down to taking an OC position for the Dolphins. Wonder why they didn’t take him as their HC last year?

I think Gailey is a great guy, but not a great HC. He can recruit well, but that’s only part of being a good HC. He loses games we SHOULD NOT LOSE ALL THE TIME, but you guys get all pumped up by beating a ranked team every now and then.

I guess you guys are ok with Chan being a mediocre coach, but I am not. He is paid in the top 1/3 of head coaches in the NCAA and HE SHOULD COACH LIKE ONE. 7-5 and 6-5 every single season does not cut it in my book.

Also not beating our in state rival 5 years in a row is a horrible thing. We make it 6 and he should be GONE. You have to win that game every now and then at least. Or maybe you could have gone to the Orange bowl by waking the offense up a little against a team that your defense held to 9 points last year? That’s ridiculous.

Chan Gailey is a middle to bottom rung HC. If we want to keep him we sure are getting screwed on the salary, and Braine really did a number on us by not putting a buyout clause in there. That was like giving the fans that gave him crap about his selection the ultimate middle finger on his way out the door.

To those of you who think they know more than I do since they’ve been watching GT football for 44 years - get a clue. I may have only been watching GT football 20 years now (since I was in high school), but I’m not some xbox nerd who thinks he could coach better so I put a website up. I speak the truth - it just hurts your heart to think a good man like Gailey couldn’t be a good HC doesn’t it?

Have a good day! www.firechangailey.com www.firechan.com

First, quit your b*** about the passing game. Taylor Bennett threw the ball well and had about 100 yards of perfectly thrown balls dropped. Don’t believe me, hit the TiVo button and count. Bottom line is that Bennett is better than the receivers we got. Having said that the opening fumble was all on Bennett. In fact our 1st two drives were marred by stupid penalty after penalty. In fact Bennett had to make the same first down three different times. Yes Clemson their stupidity as well, but the bottom line is that our defense just stuffed Clemson period. Say what you want but Clemson got a grand total of 5 first downs. Have you ever seen that stat before?(I know GT got 0 first downs in the 222-0 rout of Cumberland).

OK. so where are we? Well we need to flip flop 3 games against Virginia just to have a shot at the division. That is a long shot at best and can only occur if we run the table in the division. Some of you may not have done the matrix yet but it is impossible for GT to lose to either Duke,UNC, Miami, or VT and finish 1st. GT can lose one more out of division game and still finish 1st but only if Virginia(or VT/Miami)loses two out of division games and we win out in the division as previously mentioned.

What does it all mean? Don’t lose again and pray we have some receivers that will step up and catch the damn ball.

Also, I am a veteran Tech fan and I can tell you from experience that Bobby Dodd would have done exactly what Chan Gailey did once he realized we could stop Clemson. Let the air out of the ball and let Clemson beat itself. I’ve seen Dodd do it many, many times. Chan may not be great, but he did the right thing Saturday. (I didn’t agree with putting Josh Nesbit in, however. That could have been a disaster).

Good win for the yellow jackets! A great defensive performance by the Jackets. A great offensive line and running attack but Taylor Bennett may actually be a worse QB than Reggie Ball. Tech needs to find a better QB to get fully rounded off. Tech was lucky that the clemson special teams gave them this game. But hey a win is a win.. good job jackets!

Being born and raised in our great state, I used to pull for the Jackets in some games. Heck I even went to Tech before I transferred to UGA!! (best decision I ever made). After hanging with more than a few Tech alum over the years it bummed me out that no matter who the GEORGIA bulldogs played you blokes pull for (Florida!??, Arkansas??!!!!, and any other sorry prick orange teams!) That makes me sick and therefore I could care less who the other Georgia* college team beats or loses to. Its sad that all you ramblers out there are so bitten by your own inferiority complexes with UGA that you can’t even support your own state in those “other” games. I think when you guys finally see this and UGA fans realize this it will be better for both teams. Untill then the one Tech game I will watch and care about will be when UGA sticks it to you all again.

Taylor made a mistake on the fumble and by not throwing away that pick, but he was ON yesterday. He can’t catch it for them too. When James Johnson is 100%, I’ll feel better about the passing game.

It was a great day for football. Too bad the football that was played wasn’t that great. Tech won but the stats say on their scoring drives, we mustered a total of 28 yards of offense. And Clemson left some points on the field. This Jacket will take it but I wasn’t impressed with either team.

Tech fans – Lets stay focused here and don’t get distracted by the dog fans that want to post here. They are only here because they are confused. Confused about what? Confused that they can beat two unranked teams in the past two weeks and still move up in the polls. Bama was ranked but is no longer, if they want to argue that Bama was ranked when they played them then they can confess they were beaten by an unranked team.

I guess that’s how things work. Top 10 teams get beat and that helps them move up by beating nobodies. Clemson has bad luck (missed field goals, penalties, etc) and Tech wins.

That’s why we play the games.

As a tech student/fan, I am SICK of a TERRIBLE OFFENSE. Thank G-D Clemson gave us this game because our offense did little to win it. I think Gailey is about as good as tech can do for a coach, but I do not understand how he continues to do nothing as the offense struggles. I mean he sat around and let Reggie lose games (and not throw the ball to CJ) for 3 years. The best way to “inspire” a QB is to make them realize that they can/will be replaced if they do not execute. Chan would leave Reggie/taylor as starters regardless of how terrible they performed. I feel as though all Tech is consistently able to do is kick field goals which rarely wins games (it may prevent a loss-ie clemson). I would bet all the money I have that this year’s UGA game will be yet another pathetic loss for us.

By yellowblood

Tech adjusted to the game as it developed. It became obvious that this was not going to be a scoring contest, but it was going to become a game ofpossesion time and control by the defensive units. Our ground game was sufficient ( approx. 200 yards). It was not a game of whose passing attack is best. Also, the 12th man was on the field yesterday for Tech. When Tech gets into a meaningful game at home and shows it came to play the crowd gets down with them. And it happened yesterday.

Yes - I was at the game and saw all the dropped passes by GT. What is even more odd is that our great freshman, DJ Donley who blocked the crucial punt, IS a wide receiver and supposedly very good! He is only seeing time on special teams because the other wide receivers were already penciled in. Well….get the eraser out - duh! When pressed to explain why not play him as a weide receiver, Gailey said, ‘it’s not like the other guys are doing bad’. Ah….what?! He is and always will be clueless to what is really going on in the real world.

I’m not criticizing anyone, right now. A win is a win. Let’s wait till next weekend and see if the mo keeps rolling. I would like to see that frosh that played so well on special teams get some considerable playing time at wideout. If we would have caught a few more catchable balls, TB’s numbers would have been a lot stronger. Let’s keep it up Jackets, and hope Va loses three.

Lighten up folks. We had a good win. Not great but good.

We played well enough to NOT lose. Clemson played poorly enough TO lose and they did.

Yes our offense was shaky at best. Chan’s biggest fault is being too conservative. But when I found out that TC rushed 32 times and had 146 yds, that’s called playing to our strength (something we didn’t do so well against both BC and UVA).
As someone else said above, that was classic Dodd as well. When you see that the D is smothering the other team, you run the ball, grind the clock and hope to churn out 1st downs to win the game. That’s exactly what happened.

Would I like to see some more play action passes on 1st down, of course. Would I like to see a more varied play selection, of coure. But we are still playing a young QB and really young WR’s.
As many have said, Taylor threw some good passes that were dropped. But we only threw 15 passes total so our passing stats were not going to be good anyway.

Let’s just enjoy a win that we needed to have to save the season.

By TomJoad

October 1, 2007 12:03 PM | Link to this

There it is, cut and pasted out of the Knobler article, Jackets passing deficiency: The defense was playing so well, Gailey said, he told offensive coordinator John Bond to stay conservative. Please, Gailey, you’re the only coach in 1-A who would sit on a 4 pt lead. Let the OC do the job he was hired to do!
