B.C. getting lighter up front
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Folks, I apologize in advance for being a little light on material today. It’s chiefly because of my schedule, but I also am just now diving into BC material.
On the plus side, No. 21 BC (2-0) is going to be without two starting defensive linemen. End Nick Larkin is out with a left knee injury suffered in Saturday’s win over N.C. State. And big DT BJ Raji — who was second-team All-ACC last year — is redshirting to concentrate on academics.
On the flip side, Matt Ryan is coming to town. The BC quarterback, All-ACC first team last year, is a senior and he’s really good. His numbers were off in the win over N.C. State, but a lot of that had to do with receivers dropping passes (at least six).
More to the point, he knows what he’s doing and he does it well. Guy threw for 2,942 yards last season, 15 touchdown passes, and he ran for four more scores (he has nine rushing TDs in his career). That’s stout.
Heck of a test for Jon Tenuta’s defense this week, eh? Should be a great atmosphere Saturday night.
By the way, start time at Virginia has been announced. It’ll be noon in Charlottesville. Game will be on ESPNU.
Matt

Hey it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that Dwyer is a talented runner, but he’s also got to know blocking assignments, pass routes etc. A great runner who may not be able to pick up the blitz can get a QB hurt. Evans has been around longer and may rate higher in areas other than just running with the ball.
Based on the carries he is already getting this season, it is clear that Coach Gailey and Coach Bond will be including JD in their offensive plans. I expect we’ll see a lot more of him before this season is over.

Yes, Dwyer needs to see some action but if he’s having trouble in pass protection, he does not need to be in the game in obvious passing situations.

North Ave Pimp, Good thing you do not coach. Dwyer is talented, but fundamentally unsound. Watch his 70 yard run and you can tell that his physical ability bailed him out twice since he hit the hole standing up. Also, running isn’t his only assignment back there. He’s played in two games, chill out.
You are one of the many reasons football fans look down on Tech fans.

I’m a BC alum—Ryan threw for 2,900+ yards last year and 15 TDs. The yardage numbers you quote sound like Colt Brennan.
I wish Ryan threw for 4,800 yards last year.
Having said that, Ryan is clearly the best QB in the ACC and a potential 1st rounder in next year’s draft. Before you accuse me of being a homer, maybe just wait until you see him play. NC State did a good job defensively last week (BC’s old staff now coaches in Raleigh) and his own WRs helped a bit, too…the six drops are accurate.
I know that Tech’s defense is faster than BC’s offense. And BC is transitioning to the zone blocking scheme under Coach Jags, so while the rushing numbers were better last week against NC State, they still struggle at times to run the ball. And everyone knows about Tech’s run defense. So, I think the real question will be: will BC make big plays in the passing game—remember, BC isn’t blessed with the fastest WRs; they’re more possession types with good hands. Can they do something out of the ordinary by getting big gains—and surviving the blitz?
BC is good against the run. It should be interesting to see Tech’s offensive line against BC’s front seven. We lost a key end with a knee injury as the blog stated. We suffer for a pass rush. It’s sort of the “bend but don’t break” philosophy. BC’s defense has been good the last two years at generating turnovers. They have 8 INTs so far in two games this year. BC has to make Bennett beat them by throwing. DeJuan Tribble is one of the top CBs in college football…maybe the best. Should be interesting.
It’s going to be a great atmosphere Saturday night. Can’t wait. Go BC!

Max,
Thanks for asking about Patrick.
The Seahawks lost 12-6 to the Rams, who most coaches and league observers felt once the rosters were drafted have the most talent.
Tough first assignment.
Patrick fumbled just once at the QB position (a huge, huge improvement over his first couple practices at the position), and his team recovered. He muffed just one handoff, took the ball and ran 6 yards for a first down on a third-down play.
The little man did, however, throw one interception which was returned about 15 yards for the first score of the game.
Our head coach called me while I was still working at Tech to tell my how proud I should be of Patrick, that he never got rattled, kept his head, ran a solid huddle and made almost all of his assignments. His only glaring weakness was in the passing game.
The little guy was operating under the assumption, he said, that when a passing play is called (and we call them to a primary receiver even if three are running routes) that he was to throw it, period! So I’ve been counseling him that no, if that guy is covered, you don’t have to throw it to him. Look elsewhere, or run. He had three other incompletions, I think.
The defense I coordinate (except for Saturday, and the Saturday of the Virginia game and hopefully no others) allowed one touchdown. We had some problems guarding our flanks, and we have to teach better assignment football on the perimeter.
When you’re down to 14 players, options for personnel re-deployment are seriously limited. Our guys were really sucking wind late when the Rams scored the winning touchdown, I’m told.
Again, thanks for asking. Been working on Patrick’s passing skills, and decision-making skills. He bucked up. I’m as proud as can be. He had a lot on his plate in a tricky offense with lots of fakes and misdirection — all in three-plus practices.

Yikes! You’re right. I looked at the guy’s career stats, which you’re right, read more like a month in the life of Colt Brennan.
Ryan passed for 2,942 yards last season, and 15 touchdowns. Hit 61 percent. He rushed for four scores, nine in his career.
We’ll get it corrected in the blog, too.
Thanks.

Truth, Appreciate your objective evaluation of your team. It does sound like Bennett and our receivers will need to have a good game for Tech to win. But, even though BC will key on stopping the run, I expect that Coach Gailey and Coach Bond will still look to our upperclassmen on the line and to our stable of running backs to establish a strong ground game.
I think our offense will be OK. The concern I have is will our pass rush be strong enough to keep Ryan scrambling and off balance. Not sure our secondary can hold up if he consistently sets up in the pocket without a hand in his face.
Should be a physical game and I expect it won’t be decided until the 4th quarter.

The Truth Hurts nice blog. I think the difference in the game is GT hasn’t had to open up the play book yet, so BC doesn’t really know what’s coming.
Sure it will be a lot of Tashard Choice, but what else?
Hopefully we can control the clock and keep Ryan off the field.
This could be the ACC Championship preview.

Can you get up for BC? I just can’t get the water boiling for those guys. It is easy to get up for Miami. You sit in the stadium with a bunch of greasy haired over tanned loud mouths for four quarters and you wonder what the entire flotilla thing was all about. If I lived down there I would be for floating to Cuba looking for some relief. Waste Management should hire the Va.Tech defensive secondary and receivers for a commercial. They even had some huge offensive tackle at couple of years ago that was trash talking so much the quarterback could not get the play off over all the noise and most of it was coming from his own player number 76. It was like the old Reggie Ball thing where he would forget where he was, he would be cussing so hard and forget to call a play or get back to the huddle. What really made you hate Va. Tech was they would be acting like fools and still beat you by 21 points, which was never the case with Ball he just settled for being a fool. I get up for BC basketball, just having a hard time with the football. I hope we don’t come out flat.

The BC game will certainly test GA Tech. We have to show up on the flats and support Tech!
With a couple of BC defensive linemen out, that should help our offense, especially the running game (as if that needed any help). I would like to see us throw more to the TE or even FB. We have to be more versatile for future games.
On defense, I am concerned with our corners. Covering the WR has seemed to be a weakness for us the last few years. With BC more of a throwing team, I hope the T-man comes up with some defensive scheme to shake up their QB. Otherwise, it may be an offensive shoot out.

Ryan will get his fair share of yardage against Tech’s secondary. That’s what I’m worried about the most.
A lot of BC fans also seem to feel they have one of the best run D’s in the nation. I don’t think that’s true from what I saw of them LAST YEAR…haven’t watched any games on them this year.
Ability to run the football and Defense win championships…the ability to pass is just cream cheese.

The last time a big time offense came to Bobby Dodd at night with a top flight quarterback they only scored 14 pts. Quinn, Samardja, and Mcknight are much better than BC’s attack. Tenuta isn’t going to have a problem stopping Ryan. If the Jackets play mistake free and score 20 pts it’s going in the win column. Clemson will be a much tougher matchup.

Truthhurts, nice to see some bloggers from opposing schools with some class. Great analysis. However, I believe GT defense will be in Ryans face all night long. BC will need to hit some big plays to slow down Tenuta. BC defense looks great, and I am disappointed they may be without 2 of their starters on d-line. Like to see how we fair against your best. This should be a really great game, but in the end I believe our O-line will wear down the BC D, and Defense will force some mistakes on Ryan. I see a 10 point win; 20-10.

It’s nice to see BC becoming a force in the ACC. All you hear on ESPN about this conference is how congested it is when 2nd rate teams. This team is definately not a soft spot in the schedule and should make for an exciting early season match.
Our secondary is going to have to step up for this one, and Bennett needs to pull away from the “best of the mediocre”. Choice is awesome, but our passing game needs to improve to compliment the run. When that happens we’ll be a force to more than just the ACC.

I don’t want to jinx the Jackets but this team has the chemistry to end up undefeated on the year in the ACC. Will it happen? Maybe, they will be favored in every game they play, including road games. BC will be a good test but GT will score whatever it takes to win. BC won’t be able to stop Tech but they will hit enough big plays to keep it close. Ryan will connect on quite a few passes if his linemen pick up the blitz. Tech’s only weakness over the last year is deep coverage one on one. Can’t see that changing this week. Ryan will get his 300 passing yards.
Don’t laugh…Tech has a huge game at Virginia next week. Why you say? Well they have gone up to Virginia with teh better team many a year and found ways to lose. Remember the hook and ladder play to end the game? I have been in the stands for every game since 1990(still love that one). Tech generally plays flat at UVA. Don’t know why. In fact they have lost every game since 1944 at Virginia save 1990. Should win next week but if they don’t you can remember that I warned you.
Tech will benefit from playing Clemson and VT at home. Georgia of course as well. Miami and Maryland away will obviously be tests but they will be favored and should win. Duke, Carolina, State are all wins. An undefeated season and national title game is certainly within reason and that is based on chemistry and a ton of talented players with speed.
GO JACKEEETS!!!

Both BC and Tech are better than advertised.
This game may be decided by fitness and depth in the 4th quarter. Let’s see if the Jackets have the depth, fitness and toughness to take it to the Bean-eaters for 60 minutes. If so, Tech wins big. If not, Ryan could have a huge 4th quarter with no pass rush and spotty coverage.

National title game? You cant be serious! GT neither has the talent or the coaching to even sniff the BCS title game. You cant honestly say with a straight face that Georgia Tech has even half the talent and coaching that OU, LSU, or USC has. I dont believe that Tech beats VT, BC, Clemson, or UGA debut. You guys have a solid team, but you are by no means a juggernaut.

This will be a good game, and a good test for the jackets. Bennett will do well enough, and maybe a tad better than that. The big thing is for him to keep the mistakes to a minimum. I just don’t see BC stopping the run enough to force us into passing TOO much. Our secondary will be tested and no doubt will give up yardage through the air, but the pressure will keep that to an acceptable level. To sum it up, Jackets control the line both ways. We need to be loud and keep the home field advantage as a huge Buzz-Factor! Tech 27 - BC 13

I don’t think Ryan has the success others think he will. Remember, to have a good passing attack, you need a running game. Tech’s D is geared for the run and BC’s back isn’t an elite back, which means he’ll end up with around 40 yards. Not enough to keep the D honest and they will be all over Ryan. As far as the offense goes, we haven’t seen Taylor truley shine, but we haven’t needed him yet. Look for Taylor to be more productive against BC but Choice still gets his 100. As the weeks go by, Taylor has become more confident and you will se alot more accurate passer than the one we saw in week one. Jackets win because they always play good at night at home. I agree with others, watch out for Clemson!

Realist - More than anyone thinking too highly of this Tech team, you think too poorly of them.
The coaching is more than good. The talent is more than good. The experience is more than good. The depth is more than good. What’s missing?
Our lines are experienced, and have and will control the line of scrimmage. Our backs are experienced, and have and will run all over the defense. Our defense is experienced, and have and will run over the opposing offense. Our passing game is not as experienced, but then again it hasn’t really been tested either (except for the bowl game where it shined).
So then, what is this team’s weakness?
I could see Tech running the tables and going undefeated - it is possible. Clemson has a good offense, but their defense is not good at all. VT looked horrible against LSU and I have no clue if they will correct themselves before playing Tech. UGA looked horrible against South Carolina and I have no clue if they will correct themselves before playing Tech. BC has looked good, but like us they haven’t really played a tough game yet.
Tech could go undefeated and be in the national title hunt. Bet on it.
All of that being said, the Tech team MUST take one game at a time and not lose focus!!!!

JustMe, the worrisome thing is that most of the accolades you bestow upon this year’s team were also true of last year’s team. Look how that turned out. I think you may be looking at things through gold colored glasses. VT got dismantled by a anomoly of a college team. Frank Beamer will definitely get his team back on track. You got Clemson backwards, they have a stout D and an average offense (though they ran through your defense like a hot knife through butter last year.) BC is pretty strong across the board. AND of course the DAWGS, well, y’all never show up in that game. Plus GT always loses some crap game that they have no business losing (and this year should be someone from the ACC Coastal). Undefeated impossible? No. Highly unlikely? Yes.

To me the BC game is going to come down to Bennett being able to pass against a run defense. BC is going to have to stack the box to slow down TC and, with the exception of a few very safe passes, TB has not shown he can win a game for us. He hasn’t lost any for us, but he certainly has not won any.
On the other side of the ball, we absolutely have to pressure Ryan or he will pick our secondary apart. Our corners are the weak spot on this team and we are facing a QB that will be apble to exploit that weakness.
Should be a great game and I think it will not be decided until the 4th quarter. In the end, our offensive line should wear them down especially considering the injuries to their line. However, if they get a couple of quick scores early we could be in real trouble if we have to rely on the passing game to get us back in it.

Actually, posting as a BC alum, it’s kind of nice to not be the subject of all the trash talking that goes on in some of these other blogs…that shall remain nameless but whose school initials start with ‘U’ end in ‘A’ and have a ‘G’ in the middle.
Though I very proudly am a BC alum, my Dad and I did have GT season tickets back in ‘90. Unbelievable memories. Actually, we traveled up to Wake that year and to the Citrus Bowl, too. Good times. As an Atlanta guy through and through, winning a championship is such a rare occurrence that I still cherish that season very very much. It’s right up there close to BC’s ‘93 game vs. ND, when I was a sophomore at BC. The game that changed ND.
Now if only ND hadn’t pushed in the back on Rocket’s punt return in the ‘90 Orange Bowl.
Anyway, I think it’s a bit premature to be talking about GT going undefeated after playing the lesser part of the schedule thus far. GT may indeed beat BC this weekend—remember too that it is BC’s first road game of the year—but I don’t think anybody can be convinced quite yet that Bennett can beat a good team if teams stack the line of scrimmage. Having Calvin Johnson sort of helped in that Gator Bowl, no? A few of those deep throws he made weren’t anything more than CJ going to get the ball.
Having said that, GT has to hold serve at home. I’ll say it again: I don’t think BC will be able to run on GT. But BC’s strength has always been its coaching (b/c they don’t recruit the same guys going to GT or Miami, for example), so will new Offensive Coordinator Steve Logan, who has Tenuta’s reputation only on offense, be able to devise a quick passing attack to catch GT man-up on a blitz? Will Ryan make the right choices in the face of pressure he hasn’t felt yet? BC didn’t even try to run against Wake and Ryan still had success, largely b/c Wake didn’t blitz very much and sat back. That is asking for it from BC.
GT wins going away if Choice can pick his holes. BC will hang around if Bennett is forced into passing downs. BC doesn’t blitz very much, they read and react pretty well as is, but if Bennett makes good choices, then the only thing that will keep BC around may be a ball-control offense. I’m a fan of screen passes out wide with Tech’s defensive speed such an issue.
Sorry that was long.
Go BC!

Dadgum,
I’ll give you that we don’t play well at UVA, but we didn’t even play them up there until 1984 ( which was a tie) and we beat them there in 1986. Kind of reminds me of the late 80’s and early 90’s when everyone loved to point out we hadn’t beaten North Carolina on the road in 45 years when we didn’t play at Carolina for 35 of those years.
