Ups, downs and all-arounds at Tech

Scattershooting today with some looks back, some forward and who knows what else?

— Good trip to Notre Dame for the Techsters. My most memorable moments came after the game, seeing how pleased defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta was, and then after that, as players, family and friends milled just outside the stadium waiting to board buses. Many of them posed together for pictures, with Touchdown, er, Field goal Jesus in the background. Genuine excitement to be sure. Then, when Chan Gailey came out, players, parents, etc. clapped. A moment to note.

— If I had it to do again, I’d look into flying into South Bend sted Chicago. Or going the night before and staying in a hotel in SB. That drive wasn’t pleasant to or fro, although being in a packed car had something to do with it. At the roadside rest where we stopped about 30 miles outside of SB on the way in, there were Tech people everywhere. Again, quite a snapshot.

— Irish fans were high-class, and loyal. But not very noisy.

— Notre Dame will struggle to win six this season, maybe five. Where are they going to pick up two wins in the first half of the schedule? They’re shockingly slow.

— If I were Charlie Weis, I’d start Sharpley at Penn State, not Clausen, but what do I know?

— Tech’s freshman class has been much ballyhooed, and early returns were beaucoup. Morgan Burnett and Dwyer are the real deal. Donley will be. Many others will make quite a bit of noise before they’re finished at Tech.

— Doubt James Johnson plays against Samford. Gailey said today that Gaston, Word-Daniels, A.J. Smith and Rashaun Grant are all in a questionable class.

— About Taylor Bennett, Gailey agreed that he didn’t look right. Disagreed with my question about whether or not Taylor was comfortable. He said a better way of putting it was he thought he had to rush on several occasions when in fact he didn’t. Translation: Taylor’s timing was out of whack. I agree wholeheartedly, not that it matters. Much better way of putting it. He was rarely in sync with passing plays. Way too early to worry about that, though.

— Nevermind the idea of getting Bennett off to a scorching start against Samford, and then sitting him. Play to win, period. Let the game run its natural course. That will include plenty of passing plays for Taylor.

— Don’t forget about Mike Cox. He had a great blocking game at ND, and made a fabulous one-handed catch at the Tech sideline. They call him Bull, but he strikes me as the second coming of Moose, former Dallas Cowboys FB Darryl Johnston. A first-day pick in next year’s draft for my two cents.

— Pay close attention Saturday to the way the entire Tech defense runs. They can all haul. That’s a very good thing.

— Nervous about my son’s first game Saturday, which I’ll miss because of the Tech game. The Rams, our opponent, have speed. We have size and in a few spots excellent speed. Hmmm.

— Wonder how much the nature of Saturday’s win will impact ticket sales this week?

— What about Florida State?

I love the “stream of conciousness” blog. I, for one am glad we have an opponent where we can (hopefully)regroup from some of the injuries and give TB a chance to get his timing back.

As for FSU, what in the world were some of those playcalls….especially the 2-pt conversion late in the game. I agree with the decision to go for 2, but that was a horrible play.

Taylor is fine…key stat, 0 turnovers. The young guys looked great; Dwyer is going to be special. Thought Bond did a great job with the playcalling; let Tashard and the defense win the game and Taylor manage it.

Matt,

You are spot on about the drive from Chicago to South Bend and back. I think going into South Bend would be a better deal or perhaps coming up from Indianapolis.

Great blog, Matt!

I agree with everything you wrote. Not worried about TB. Often offense lags behind defense at the beginning of season.

I like what you said about playing to win, even against Samford. I would play Bennett and let him complete a few passes to increase confidence. Let Choice make his 200 yards for the Heisman. Beyond that, just win.

By the way, I wish Choice was allowed to get just 4 more yards to make the 200 yard mark against ND. That would have been sweet! Why doesn’t the coaching staff (or assistant) look at such things during a game before yanking someone?

I bet they look at he was cramping and we have 13 more games left. Four yards is not worth the rest of the season. No reason to chance it.

Great game GT! It was nice to see a pass to the TE on Sat. (GT fans in the stands were ecstatic) I think we should use it more because its a low risk pass that can help TB gain confidence and rhythm. Hopefully, the offense opens up more this weekend.

P.S: Thanks for the memories ND and I prayed for forgiveness for what we did to you.

Face it guys and gals, we beat an extremely overrated team. ND hasn’t beaten a worthy opponent since Weis has been there. I’m as happy as the next about the win, but let’s not get too cocky. We still need to beat the bulldogs. We could go 11-1 and lose to them and I would consider the season a failure. Thoughts?

UGA game is not high on my wish list. I would prefer to win the ACC and the BCS game that follows way before I care about beating UGAY.

Beating UGAY would only be icing on the cake!

It seems that only the idiot ugay fans care more about beating Tech than winning their conference…. kinda sad because it clearly shows how stupid they really are!

tdone/Matt Indianapolis is a bad idea…trust me, that’s what we did. 3.5 hours to go 140 miles, traffic lights galore.

The biggest cheer of the day for ND was when they announced the Michigan score.

Matt I too was wondering how many butts will be in the seats this Saturday. I believe there will be noticeably more. What’s the word on the Ramblin Wreck, will it be there Saturday?

Just Me: LMAO! You wish you didn’t care, or better yet, you wish Tech actually could beat Georgia. And by the way, about Georgia caring more about beating Tech than winning the conference, I guess we can have it both ways, huh? We’ve never had to choose since Richt got here. 3 SEC East titles, Two SEC titles and 6 nerd beatdowns works pretty good for me. Who said we had to choose? Hey, what are you nerds doing talking football anyway? Get back to your cubes, I want those TPS reports pronto.

We can’t get through a conversation about Tech football without one of these pathetic UGA fans, with his repressed homosexual tendencies(abused by his father as a child)chiming in with his inane comments. Great kick start for the season. My thoughts after watching the game: -Is Tech that good or is ND that bad ? I think a little of both. -Tech’s attacking defense was superb. JT had ‘em coming from everywhere and the ND offense was simply overwhelmed with the speed and quickness.
-A little concerned about getting bogged down in the red zone. The final should have been MUCH worse.
-Very refreshing to see a glimpse of the future from the young guys. You’re right. Burnett and Dwyer are the real deal. Thank you Burnett for allowing my son to get his #1 GT jersey back out of the closet. I think we’ll get “Burnett” ironed on the back. ;-) Dwyer is going to be special ! This kid looks like a great natural runner. Is there any split back looks in Bond’s playbook ? -Choice was fantastic. A legit Heisman candidate IMHO. -T. Bennett did look a little out of sync. I hope it was just nerves. He should get a chance to kill some butterflies this week. However, I do agree with a lot of posts I’ve read. 0 TURNOVERS is a very underrated stat.

I can’t seem to get a decent evaluation of the injuries. Doesn’t anyone, including you Matt, have an accurate assessment? Even mild concussions and strained hamstrings can have lasting or re-occurring effects. I watched the game and I guess I missed Johnson’s injury. He played the best I’ve seen so-far — the ball just wasn’t delivered. We need Word-Daniels, he is our best CB and Pat Clark isn’t good enough to be a starter. Reece and Butler need to get playing time when possible. Grant could provide another spark when spelling Choice both running and receiving. He’s better than Evans. Gaston and Smith — we want ya’ll back too ASAP!

i think tech truly has the potential to win every game this year…..the defense, O-line, cox are absolutely solid…..choice is a stud….it all comes down to the development of TB and his receiving corps……and the play calling is critical…..the screen or dump passes to choice, involve the TE’s, some wrinkles and trickery, a little bit of which we saw Saturday (let bond call the plays chan!!!)….because after this week you can be sure that teams will stack the line, and try to shut down the running game and make TB and the passing game prove their worth…..maybe the O-line and choice are so good it won’t make a difference……but there are defenses that GT will face that will demand a passing game……..and freakin FG fests will not be enough……. go jackets

I sat back Saturday and enjoyed watching a team that should become very famliar, great defense, excellent running game, solid special teams and a passing game that made no serious mistakes.

Yes, like most of you I hope Taylor Bennett will settle in and start throwing the ball better, but he was able to throw the ball to the running backs and tight end. He did missed open receivers but I think that was more a product of nerves rather than lack of talent.

While I am not quite ready to crown this team with a champion’s crown yet is exciting to see them get off to a great start. The BC game in 2 weeks will give us a pretty good standard to measure the team against and from there we’ll see what happens!

Sidenote to the UGA fans, nice game against Okie State on Saturday night. Your young QB looked sharp and and Willie’s young D looked hungry. Looks like we’re in for a helluva game in November! Let’s hope both teams come in fired up!

Till next time y’all!

I think Taylor was trying to be to perfect, and I agree his timing was off. He hasn’t started since bowl game, and i think he felt he had to live up to that game. As far as the time goes, when he practices he doesn’t have that much time, so it probably take some getting use to.

Thank you, Matt, for some valid observations. I was privileged to be at the game Saturday.

First of all, ND is a great institution (football or not) and a great place to see a game. College football is better when ND is good. I hope they get it moving forward as the year progresses. It will make our win look even better, if that is possible.

Secondly, Tech looked poised, enthusiastic, mature, and in control from pre-game warmups till the final gun. I notice the team was happy to win…but not “giddy” as if they’d just won the Nat Champ. They trotted to the locker room (after singing the Ramblin’ Wreck with the Tech faithful down in the Visitors corner) as if they knew they’d done well, but only begun their season of effort. If they can be consistent week in and out, they could be real, real good by the end.

Thirdly, Tech’s defense was LIGHTS OUT. If there is a better college defense when you consider talent + scheme = total package, I’d like to know where it is. Notre Dame had a lot of new people out there, but last time I checked, they have 85 players on scholarship just like everyone else. Tech absolutely STEAMROLLED the Irish…MINUS NINE yards rushing…are you kidding me. Also, Tech defenders tackled extremely well, held there position and did not make glaring mental mistakes. Only one time did a missed tackle hurt. Gary Guyton had Evan Sharpley wrapped up for a sack in the 3rd Qtr…should have had him…and Sharpley escaped and made a nice completion, then Gary got hit with a roughing the passer for tackling Sharpley after the throw. Other than that, and two other plays where their receiver had one or two steps on our DB on a “go” route, the D was flawless.

Finally, please no “hand-wringing” about Taylor Bennett. HE DID NOT MAKE ANY MENTAL MISTAKES. I say again, HE DID NOT MAKE ANY MENTAL MISTAKES. He missed a few throws, including a sure TD to James Johnson. I was very pleased with his presence, his game management, and his overall performance. His numbers will improve week by week. And remember, with our defense and running game, Taylor does not have to be perfect. He may make a few plays here and there. He may make a few errors. The only way he can “sink” us is if he just makes terrible play after play after play on consecutive series. I see that as a very, very remote possibility. He is solid, if not spectacular, and I expect he will improve steadily. Coach Bond affirmed in post-game comments that Taylor can do everything this offense requires him to do.

Get ready to enjoy the rest of ‘em.

Thanks team…players and coaches…for all the hard work and giving this fan something to cheer about in the midst of the “sea of ND green” on Sat.

I think by the time I stood up to sing the Ramblin’ Wreck for the umpteenth time, enough was enough…but the Irish fans were very good hosts and a wonderful bunch of folks. The campus was also spectacular!

Ever notice how the Doggies talk out of both sides of their mouth? Here we are on a Tech blog and they jump in start talking trash saying things like “WE DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT THE TECH GAME UNTIL THE WEEK ITS PLAYED”. If that were the case then why would they have their neighbors kid turn their computer on and help them compose an entry on the Tech blog?? The neighbors kid can’t be very old because they couldn’t figure out ho to shut the Caps Lock off.

Stay on your own blog with the rest of your rude, obnoxious, academic wasteland friends are. Oh wait, that is what they are calling USC this week - I guess there may be two of a kind in the SEC.

Destin, Chan has never given too many specifics on injury situations and for good reason. No need in adding more detail to the opposition’s scouting report.
As for all this interstate arguing: Folks, there is a multitude of football to be played before late November and a lot more pressing issues for both sides of the Great Divide. Let the chips fall where there may and then we can all have a more intelligent discussion on GT/UGA a few months down the road.

Other than the FG’s in the beginning, the game was a success. Choice and the defense are already there. Bennett will work things out by the BC game. All our tough games this year will be at home, so that is good. Notre Dame won’t be that good this year, but it was still good to salvage the split.

As for winning the ACC vs. beating UGA, I’ll take beating UGA every time. They are both important goals, but let’s not kid ourselves. UGA has had our number for a while now, but they’ll have to actually work for this one so who knows.

But first thing’s first, we have to keep the ball rolling with something to the tune of 41-0 against Samford. There is no reason they should score. BC is on the horizon and we need to be sharp.

Let’s review Tech is Gay-ley’s points:

  1. Our kicker is a metrosexual. Maybe. But at least there are no known pictures of him spooning another guy. I don’t know about you, but I have never, ever done something like that even as a joke. I have never consumed enough alcohol to even begin to think that a stunt like that wouldn’t be just plain out gross.

Yep, some Tech grads are nerds. Yep, we had flag boy. But if you want to make fun of Tech because our football players and fans are gay be careful - because YOUR stud quarterback apparently enjoys being under center.

  1. We are all geeks working on TPS reports. Maybe. However, if you weren’t suffering from alcohol dementia you would know that the bosses asking for those reports were all idiots. The movie made fun of them (much like we Tech grads do to Nimrods like you).

Man, I am sick of these postings. GT won big and it was the first game of the year. Here’s a stat for you….33 points!! Take that any way you like.

And one more note. For those of you who wanted to keep Choice in the game to get 200 yds, I have a name for you….Tony Hollings. He stayed late in a blowout against BYU and was lost for the season. We have 13 to go and its too risky just to pad a stat. If we lose Choice, we can kiss it goodbye.

Looking good jackets !!! There was a “comfort zone” there that I had not seen in a long time . Whatever you have done to attain that , hang on to it for dear life !

Hoping Taylor was only working out the jitters and that his accuracy/timing will improve . He seems to have led the passer on almost every long pass . Give Choice the ball and mix up the attack with the Bull . J.Dwyer is looking real good too - this kid has a real future - ya’ll dont waste the guy . Still have reservations on Chan and general offensive play calling . My grandmother remains on standby to assist !

First off their will be no flaming from me. Observations of GT vs ND Congrats GT on the win. Hope you win all your games, save for one in late Nov. Looks like ND will be paying dearly for the soul selling they have done the past two years to play in BCS Bowl games that they clearly didn’t deserve. (BTW-ContactBuzz when did GT play in a BCS game? Just asking for clarity) I saw a slow plodding ND that was clearly outclassed by GT’s speed. Charlie Weis (so called genius) has got to wake up to the reality that his D that just got 30+ pasted on them (at home no less)has 7 Srs.. Can you see it getting uglier in Golden Domer land before it gets better? Choice is without a doubt the key component to GT’s success. Whenever he went out of the game GT’s O saw a significant dropoff in production. GT’ers you can whistle past the grave all you want but if any team takes away Choice production and puts the burden on Bennett you’re in trouble. He stares down his chosen receiver and a team with truly good safeties will expose this. Got away with it in Gator Bowl with CJ but there is no one on the roster who can go up like he did to compensate for a toss up ball. Know it’s early but I have witnessed this for the past few years in Athens-Not that the final score was any indication but your game should have been over in the first half. Way too many red zone opps that were wasted (not to mention the huge field position advantage) that will come back to bite against a better quality opponent. Point above regarding Choice and Bennett is validated given the lack of RZ production. When ND was forced tight by GT being in RZ even they were able to force GT into FG’s vs Td’s. Exposes lack of options in this area with TB at the helm. Nesbitt might be a better option to at least give the threat of a run option from QB. Just my $.2 worth. Again Congrats GT’ers see you in Nov!

Great blog. Just saw Gailey’s complaint about the team not scoring TDs in the red-zone. Funny, that’s been his trademark shortcoming as a coach at Tech and the NFL. Chan needs to look in the mirror, let go of his offensive mindset (or lack thereof), and let the team attack the endzone for a change.

Quaildawg - this year isn’t over yet. The point was all of those teams appeared in BCS bowls the same season as beating a Weis-coached ND team. It probably won’t happen this year - based on numbers. There won’t be enough BCS spots for all of the teams that beat ND this year. But it’s still a fact as of right now…

Defense: Efficient, ruthless, and dominating. Precisely what we expected. Overall? A-plus. Real test with BC, VT, UGA, and perhaps Clemson.

Offense: Hesitant, but no mistakes, and Choice was … pretty much what some of us expected. Bennett will chill. It was his first real start as the “savior of the offense”, on opening day, on national TV, on the road, and in one of the legendary stadiums of all football. He’ll chill. We can’t afford to get into the red zone four times and come away with three field goals. Overall: B-minus. Real tests: BC and UGA.

Special Teams: Kick coverage was much improved. Punting was superb. (Expected? Kind of.) Kicking was so-so. Bell can’t afford to miss any more. Kickoffs were interesting. Some short, some long. Withhold an opinion on that. Return yardage must improve. Seriously — return yardage must improve. Overall: B-minus. Real tests: VT, Clemson, and UGA.

November 1: Thursday night at Bobby Dodd will be big. Really, really big. November 24: Thanksgiving weekend at Bobby Dodd could be quite enjoyable, indeed.
