Bond’s first play will be …

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression, and John Bond is about to make his. That had me thinking back to two dramatic first plays.

2005, Tech vs. UConn: Reggie Ball misses the game because of what later proves to be meningitis, and Taylor Bennett debuts. The first play is a pass to Calvin Johnson just beyond the first-down marker, and Johnson takes it from there, completing a 42-yard touchdown play.

2006, Tech at Virginia Tech: Memories of the previous year’s 51-7 rout vanish immediately when Ball throws 59 yards to a wide-open James Johnson on the game’s first play. Georgia Tech goes on to lead 38-13 and coast to a 38-27 victory.

So, what does Bond call on his first play? A handoff to Tashard Choice? A pass to Greg Smith? A trick play? What would you do, and what will he do?

A pass to the tight end!! That would shock everyone, including the tight end.

With ND using a 3-4 defense alignment I believe a QB sneak with Choice going wide as decoy would be a great way to start. The OL would bulldoze the front seven leaving TB plenty of running room.

Shotgun formation, 2 wides , direct snap to Choice to the weak side.with Cox leading to 6

I like the idea red, but how about the other way around? Direct snap to Cox with Tashard leading the way. That would suprise everyone.

How about the ol’ fumble roosky, where Bennett fakes the pitch to choice then falls down and Nate McManus dashes for 20yards behind Andrew Gardner!

We’re @ ND so we should go with the Hail Mary baby!

Should be: play action dump to Peek.

Likely: Calming nerves with Tashard off-tackle to the short side of the field.

Play action fake to Tashard up the middle, Taylor rolls to the left and fires a laser to a receiver who is either wide open or in single coverage.

Yeah, it’s going to be Choice off-tackle to the short side. I’m betting that we run until it’s ineffective.

When they break from the huddle, Taylor needs to find that pewny leprecaun mascot they have in South Bend, and fire a pass into his whimpy body. At least Taylor will get on the Sportcenter Top Ten.

5 300-pound linemen plow straight ahead, and Bennett turns around and hands the ball to Choice. Repeat until the Irish stop it.

West Virginia’s play from the Gator Bowl where the offensive line doesn’t move during the entire play, and then eventually falls over, while the play goes on around them.

Choice goes motion right, Taylor takes the snap, fakes the dive play to Cox, hides the ball for two seconds and hits a wide open Choice down the right sideline for the TD.

I saw quick out to a wide reciever for like 5 yards, to give Taylor confidence and make 2nd and 3rd down managable.

Tashard Tashard then more Tashard

Option to Choice who flips to DJ who hits JJ or Bey Bey on their 36 and we walk in for a TD. Or even better, come straight off the sidelines no huddle, and run no huddle till we score; hitting every WR and TE. Next series run, run, run.

A 3-4 defense is built on pursuit. So let’s let them pursue. Toss to Tashard Choice behind Bull Cox following the Tight End and Tackle. (Student body left or right, does not matter but it needs to be headed to the wide side of the field.) The Linebackers will close to the front. The Cornerback on the wide side will react to the run and close. Just before the tackle, flip back to a trailing Rashaun Grant. The Linebackers will be out of the play behind our NOW 4 blockers. The cornerback will be out of position and his momemtum will be heading away from the point of attack. Rashaun Grant will be mano a mano with the Strong Safety. He needs to run wide and give one ‘juke’. This is 6. They will never know what happened. You can call it the 007. One final point, if Grant’s dominant side is Right the play needs to go right as his ‘juke’ will be to the left and needs to be strong. So this play may need to be set up by the previous play to the left hash mark. Or reverse the above if the stronger leg is the left one. IT’S NOTRE DAME!

LOL the tightend play by monroejack is classic. that would suprise the nation to see that on first down.

but if not i think the irish will learn to respect the run early, with that said, i’d go playaction to tashard, let that offensive line block their tails off and hit Bebe deep, if its not there, leak tashard out in the flats and let him do his thing in the open field..

GO JACKETS!!!

I’m quite sure we will see plenty of Choice between the tackles all day. But, on the first play, we should mix it up a little as ND will be looking to stuff Choice and get their team and the crowd all fired up. Playaction to Choice and quick hitter to Peek or Grant. If we happen to get real good field position — go long.

Throwing the ball over the middle would be a good idea and something we haven’t seen in four years! A slant perhaps?

line up pass formation and then pitch the ball to Choice. Lets see how the defense reacts and we get a glimpse of their pass defense package. Next play, to the tight end. Next play, hand off up the middle to gain a first down. Next play, GO DEEP! Test them. Taylor is accurate enough.

Lots of interesting ideas here. Throwing to the tight end on the first play definitely would send a message that this offense isn’t like the former ones. Handing to Choice until Notre Dame stops it would send a message of confidence in the offensive line and Choice, especially if it works.

Swing pass to Choice coming out of the backfield. But passing to the TE would be ok too.

Just hand it to Choice and run over people. No need to get creative, run, run, run and run more on ND.

Lots of good ideas but some sort of play action pass giving Bennett the option of hitting the tight end over the middle or someone out on the flank or someone down the sideline. What we have now is options in terms of reading defenses. Not since Fridge has this been the case on regular basis.

It doesn’t matter what the jackets do on their first play or, for that matter, on their second and third plays either. The important thing to remember is to kill the clock by throwing the ball away on 4th down.

I would say some type of screen pass to ease the comfort level for taylor. Then a constant pounding by Choice.

I’ll put my Tech hat on here for a minute. Depending on field position I would call it differently. Starting at their own 30 or deeper, I would run Choice right behind Cox up the two gap, pickup 4 or 5 yards and let ND know that it is going to be a heavy dose of TC until they stop him. If Tech starts at their 40 or better, my first play would be the exact same but play action with Johnson running a post from left to right - very similar to a play last year to Calvin Johnson, but Ndukwe delivered a big, well timed hit to knock the ball loose.

Also, for you Tech fans, go to www.und.com and check out the transcript of Charlie Weis press conference from a couple days ago. Better insight into your own team than many of the beat reporters give you - CW has a lot of respect for Tenuta.

Seems like I remember TB completing his first 8 or 9 passes in the Gator Bowl. He was deadly accurate all day. I say put it up early to set up the run. They’ll have their tongues hanging out trying to run down Tashard. I just can’t wait. I think this is going to be a great day for GT!

By Chris

Taylor wasn’t exactly “deadly accurate all day” during the Gator Bowl. Some of those passes, he got lucky with Calvin being the freak he is and pulling down balls in triple coverage. Some of them, though, he did really thread the needle and make some really nice throws. He won’t be able to just put up a jump ball this year, but if he can throw intermediate passes accurately and occasionally hit the deep man in stride (I can count the number of times Reggie did this on one hand) he’s going to be just fine.
