Who backs up Choice?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We’re smack in the middle of the weirdest week of the preseason. It’s not quite the “camp” segment; two-a-days are over, and practices are closed. But it’s not game week, either. We’re in that place in between, where it feels a little bit early to break down the Notre Dame game but a little bit late to be talking about the two-deep.
That said, one thing I’m curious about is how the running back situation will play out behind Tashard Choice. How does Tech divide the playing time? The scrimmages and practices suggest Rashaun Grant might be as much a receiver as a running back and that Roddy Jones, if he doesn’t redshirt, would be used much like Grant. The X factor here is that Grant is hurt and might be out for awhile.
Does Jamaal Evans play when Choice doesn’t, or does Tech use Jonathan Dwyer as well with the first team, as it did on Saturday? I think Dwyer looks good enough to get a shot. What would you do?

Evans is already proven, in my eyes.

It’s great for Tech to have many options here. It’s only good!

if dwyer fumbles any more in practice, like he did in the scrimmage I guarantee we won’t see him vs ND; but probably over time we will see plenty of him. Expect Grant and Evans to back up Choice if fumbles are truly an issue for him.
If they aren’t an issue and that was just a rare occasion; then we probably will see him for ND and the rest of the year.
This staff doesn’t play RB’s that fumble. That is one reason why Grant’s carries haven’t really increased in the past, b/c of his tendency to drop the ball in practice. Now that he seems stronger and more sure with the ball hopefully he will get more carries.

Better question is who is going to backup Bennett. Saw him play the other day….let’s hope that was just an off day. I feel we are in for a long season if he gets the nod all year….and given Gailey’s history, that will probably be the case.

Regarding Taylor, remember: He didn’t beat out Reggie in practices, but he always did well in game situations when he got the ball. Maybe he thrives on the pressure and just doesn’t get the same extra motivation in practices. Regardless, he’s got a history of not practicing well, but I think he has the tools to put it all together come Gameday.

I wouldnt be too quick to say we’re in for a long season based on one scrimmage. He still completed 50% of his passes on an “off day” with a couple of starting wide recievers on the bench. I’ve been to several practices and scrimmages and for the most part I’d say Bennett was solid. In one scrimmage he was unstoppable. So if he plays somewhere in between throughout the season, we should be fine.

Taylor Bennett should be alright. I support the notion that you can’t overspeculate on a QB’s performance based on situational scrimmage conditions. So far he has turned in sturdy performances under real game conditions. I hope and expect him to be consistent and make good decisions. He has the arm strength and ability to make all the throws. He is reported to be very studious with the films. That’s a good sign.

I would like to see Evans be the backup. He is a spark plug that has looked good the few times he has gotten to carry the ball. I think the defense loses him behind the OL because of his height. I would also like to see Dwyer get some carries, but not until he proves he can hold on to the ball.

Grant is a Senior and hopefully wil have a breakout year and be a soild back-up for Choice. I hope to see both freshman running backs used both rushing and catching.
Oh and by the way, has everyone ordered there Michael Vick chew toy for their pitbull?

If I was Choice I’d be more worried about who was behind me during the Tickle Pile than on the football field. I understand he was not selected to represent the team during the Girlyman Contest. What’s up with that?

Wow. Almost made it 10 comments without someone being a d-bag. I’m no historian, but I think that may be a GT Blog record.
You’re pathetic.

What a great problem to have! The thing I wonder is how Jones would’ve looked playing behind the #1 line against the #2 “D”? Dwyer looked great at times and is quite a talent, but most were against the #2 defensive unit. I think the fumbles were more the result of a couple of bad moments, and not bad habits.
That being said, I think Evans will see backup duty originally, and Dwyer will get more and more touches as the season progresses. Grant will be a great threat on short passes, although he really should get more touches from tailback. It’s impressive that a freshman is having to learn 2 positions, as Roddy has, and apparently is not having any trouble doing so. If Grant is injured, Roddy will be a fine backup to him in the slot and on special teams. Eventually, he will get his touches, too, and won’t disappoint.

What’s wrong with a rotation system using them all ? Nothing like fresh legs for a RB in the 4th qtr. Of course, this is if Choice is winded, hurt or not performing. I think he’s ready for a big season. He just has to FINISH those runs and get through the secondary. From what I’ve read that’s been a focus and it needs to be.

I don’t think there will be a clear number 2 behind Choice this year. I think Evans will get the nod over Grant, and alternate with Dwyer. Hopefully Dwyer and Roddy do see some time on special teams though, those guys can fly.

Wow Hawk, such funny and original stuff. I’m sure you make your mother proud. I think Evans will emerge as the back-up with Grant coming out of the slot. That gives us lot’s of speed and an outlet for TB if no primary openings downfield. I don’t think I want to see too much of Dwyer in the ND game because of the pressure, unless it’s 4th quarter and a blow-out. Evans ran really tough last year, and has proven he can handle a big game. A good situation would have Evans backing TC, and Roddy backing Grant in the slot, and then using Dwyer as his confidence builds. Make no mistake, Dwyer is the starting RB the next 3 years, so no need to rush him when we have such quality backs.

Poor “hawk”…still fighting those repressed homosexual tendencies, aren’t you. What a shame your daddy molested you when you were young. Must be thrilling for you to get on this blog where real men are discussing football.
