Thomas injured but will return

Georgia Tech trainers are working on the right knee of redshirt freshman Demaryius Thomas, who appeared to catch a cleat in the turf while cutting during seven-on-seven drills. It’s way too early to know whether the injury will be a serious one. Quarterback Taylor Bennett and running back Tashard Choice have gone over to lend their moral support.

Thomas, known to everybody as Bebe, is one of the true athletic talents on this Yellow Jackets team and has been practicing as a starter in the three-receiver set. He is up and walking now, gingerly, with ice on his knee.

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE Thomas’ injury is “not as bad as we feared” and he is expected back in time for the opener Sept. 1 at Notre Dame, Tech coach Chan Gailey said in a statement I received Friday afternoon. I now return you to the rest of my practice blog from this morning. …

Freshman Jonathan Dwyer and redshirt freshman Jamaal Evans lined up as the top kickoff returners. Redshirt freshman Correy Earls and senior Rashaun Grant formed the second unit.

An early look at some of the top kick coverage guys: Joe Gaston, Robert Hall, Tony Clark, Dominique Reese, Tyler Evans, Anthony Barnes, Troy Garside, Sedric Griffin, Morgan Burnett and Avery Roberson. The kickers continuing to compete for the job include Travis Bell, Mohamed Yahiaoui, Scott Blair and Kevin Crosby.

Pat Clark is back at practice today and just took the field with the No. 2 defense. I haven’t seen Matt Rhodes. Dan Voss remains in his place at left guard. Freshman Clyde Yandell continues to spell Andrew Gardner for many of the first-team snaps at left tackle, as he did on Thursday. Jacob Lonowski continues to be the right tackle.

Linebacker Travis Chambers came out with what looks like a left shoulder injury. Griffin replaced him with the No. 2s.

Now I see Matt Rhodes. He’s here but not in full pads like his teammates.

Thanks, but this is Mike, not Matt.

More bad news at receiver: Andrew Smith has been helped from the field with an ice pack behind his left knee. Backup tackle Jason Hill has been hurt, too.

Some good news: Center Kevin Tuminello has been able to stay on the field with the No. 1 unit. Tuminello had been having issues with the heat and some illness.

What are your thoughts on Yandell and Gardner? I’d find it very hard to believe Yandell could take his spot. Just trying to get him some practice and see what he can do due to his still learning the position I guess, but why with the 1’s and not the 2’s?

Hate to hear about Bebe, keep us updated.

Any thoughts on this afternoon’s practice with the heat and all? Maybe a chance to see CG do a backflip at the pool? (Nice cover story on the homepage by the way)

Thanks Mike

I’m a Georgia fan, but still enjoy following Tech a good bit… so I guess I’m a bit atypical. I just wanted to note that I think Knobbler does an incredible job providing practice updates. Those fall camp injuries are tough… I’m hoping they stay out of Athens. Good luck.

The No. 1 defense just stopped the No. 1 offense on three plays from inside the 5. Philip Wheeler crunched Mike Cox just shy of the goal line on first down. Taylor Bennett’s pass to Matt Kamp was incomplete. And Tashard Choice went outside and found no running room on third down. The No. 2 defense then stopped the No. 2 offense.

What’s up with all the injuries this year? Are they doing something different. Or are they all that motivated to get those starting spots?

I guess its a good thing to be aggressive at this point but seriously… save some of it for the Irish!

Wreck94,

There aren’t any more injuries than normal. You’re just hearing about more because these blogs and practice reports offer more information and detail that we typically get.

Honestly…I almost think we’re getting too much information on injuries and etc. It stirs up angst and worry well before we know if its anything serious.

I would ask Matt and Mark to temper their injury comments a bit and wait until they know something before posting.

I like hearing the info, great job Mike & Matt. Mike immediately qualified that it is TOO early to tell whether it will be serious. He further said he was walking around.

Not to be negative, but if that is our kickoff coverage team that we start, we are not going to improve our coverages at all this year. We need at least 2 more higher talent tacklers on that unit.

Our coverage can only be better after being last in the NCAAs… But no, it will be better…Have a couple veterans… and TClark has more experience now and more pounds. You’ll see barnes and burnett shine—also, look for MJ to be added later on.

I want to reiterate my appreciation for the job that Mike and Matt are doing. Too much coverage of fall camp is a good problem to have.

The major difference is Bond knows what he’s doing with a lot of experience. Nix just pretty much ran the offense for the other team.

It’s that simple.

Whoops. Oldskooljacket is correct. I goofed. Jamaal Evans is a sophomore.

More on the Yandell/Gardner thing: Coach Chan Gailey said Gardner was a little nicked up. It’s still noteworthy to see Yandell working so much with the No. 1s, though. I think he’s got a shot to play as a backup this season.

To the question about how Bond reacted to the defense stopping the offense on the goal line: Great question. I talked to him about it. He was obviously less happy than when the offense went 6 for 6 in a similar situation a couple of days ago, but he was upbeat about Cox getting almost to the goal line on the first play and pointed out that play selection in a game might be different from what Tech ran in today’s practice.

To the question about Nix vs. Bond: That’s also a great question, but it’s too complicated to get into in a blog. Things are much different, especially in the passing game, and in the way the coaches work on the field.

To the question about some of the players who have gotten a shot at kickoff coverage: That’s deeper than my notes allow me to answer. Frankly, there are so many bodies out there that on kick coverage I just jotted down the No. 1s.

I second the feeling about Travis Chambers, who has been through a lot with his foot injury and seemed to be coming into his own. It would be a shame if this shoulder thing slows his progress.

Thanks for the updates Mike. Dont get any Tech coverage out here in Colorado, except for what I see on here and a few other Tech websites. I will be attending the Air Force Academy games again this year to get my “live” fix (will see how they do since DeBerry is gone).

I have been rather impressed on how well Tech looks so far this year. It looks like a lot of the Freshmen have come in and fit in rather quickly, which is good. I just wish 1 Sep would hurry up and get here.

On a side note, my dad (IE ‘66) will be starting his 41st year with season tickets on the flats. Wish I was still there to attend the games, but I love it out here in Colorado too much.

As supporters of a fine academic institution is important for us to educate the less fortunate about the tickle pile myth, grounded in nothing and based on no evidence.

Wow, incredibly original Knute. You must be the first one to come post that on the Tech blogs in the last 6 months. Maybe if Stafford wasn’t busy spooning his backups in his own tickle pile he might be able to reduce his INT-TD ratio from 2:1 to 1:1. It seems pretty clearthat “TechisGayley” has some real serious issues with his manhood. I have read quite a few of his posts on the Tech blogs, and his latent homosexuality comes through pretty clearly. My guess is that his father abused him sexually, and he now is a dedicated cross dresser, and wishes he could get a sex change operation. I wanted to point this out so in the future when he comes on the blog with his pathetic attempt at manhood we can all have a little sympathy for him. After all, his little forays on the football site with the chance to interact with manly men are probably quite thrilling for him.

I was at the ND game. You know what, I like the fact that the fans cheered Quinn getting hurt. It’s about time Tech fans actually got excited and emotional about the game. I realize that it was distasteful, but you cannot honestly tell me that any other school wouldn’t have done the same.

Sure, I don’t support injuries, but if Anoai completely decks a guy, I’m going to go crazy. I’m just saying, I’ve been a Tech fan since I was 4 years old. Heck, I used to live on North Avenue, literally across the street from Bobby Dodd. Tech fans have been so fickle and passive. When do you ever see a full sea of gold? Every home game at Georgia, the stands are a solid red and the crowd is rockin. With recruiting picking up the past couple of years, Tech has a chance to become a great team. As fans, we need to become more passionate and supportive. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, but that’s how I feel.

Spelling “Gailey” as “Gaylie”….well, my 10 year old nephew would probably laugh at that, so there is tip off #1 it’s a kid.

Laughing at an injured football player…well, he’s never played organized sports or he would know what it’s like to practice everyday,… and a grown mature man (regardless of who his favorite team is) would never come on a message board and throw his manhood away by laughing about an injury like that……again, it’s a kid. What do you expect?

If you don’t get emotional at games, you haven’t been a Tech fan long enough. It has been so frustrating. Even the years when we have so much potential, something goes wrong. Joe Hamilton leads Tech to a win in the Gator Bowl in 1998. In 1999, we have absolutely no defense after the departure of Randy Edsall. In 2000, Godsey surprises everyone by developing into a top notch quarterback. In 2001, we beat Navy 70-7, then 911 delays the FSU game. Clemson comes to town and wins in OT, and the season never lives up to its hype. In 2002, Tony Hollings starts out the first four games of the season with 633 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns, leading the nation. Then, he tears his ACL. Last year, we head to GA 9-2, full of hope that finally, we can beat Georgia; finally, we can possibly win a championship the next week. We lose both games by 3. The defense plays its heart out both games. I can see the frustration and the pain on the players faces. I am not embarassed to admit that I shed tears after those two games. So when good things happen for Tech, it is something special. The 2004 Final Four run was one of the most memorable times of my life as a fan. I guess I just can’t properly express myself on this blog since some people are already grouping me with Tech is Gaylee.

By Darren in the Springs

One thing you have to understand is that comparing UGAg support against Tech is not a good comparison at all. Georgia has a large fan base, and the school is considerably larger. Just have to realize it is not “hip” to be a Tech fan, and therefore the fan base is much smaller.

Anyway, I did not graduate from Tech but I have followed them for over 30 years since my dad was a ‘66 grad.

Cannot wait for the season to start.

is it any surprise that the UGAgger read our blog? they should up when we play North Carolina in football with UGAy gear on. They show up on every message board related to Tech to make their dumb remarks. Then they turn around and say that Tech isnt really a rival. No, it doesnt make sense, but dont forget that they dont have to, they are dumb and couldnt think their way out of a paper bag. if it was any of the intelligent Dawgs, they wouldnt be on our blog.

also, remember that class is not taught at UGAy. you have to do 2 of the 3 of: 1) peeing from the upper deck onto your own fans; 2) boo and rail on a player that gave 4 years of blood, sweat and tears (along with his brother), and then dropped an important pass. the family of the player has not since been involved with UGAy; or 3) spoon with the UGA quarterback for 15 minutes and agree not to file a sexual harassment case

By charles

I can sense a change in the “coolness” of Tech though. How else to explain recruits turning down the likes of Auburn, Florida, FSU, Georgia, Tennesee, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, etc to come to Tech? I do agree that Georgia has a larger fan base. However, even when new people move to Atlanta, they seem inclined to jump on the GA bandwagon. If somehow we could get more bandwagon Tech fans lol…

What Tech has and people just don’t understand is Atlanta. The fastest growing metro area in the last six years in the country is Atlanta. The prettiest Afro American women in the country are in Atlanta along with opportunity. The largest press concentration in the Southeast and top 5 in the country is in Atlanta. You think it is paradise to be a black man in Athens. Barney Fife cops working you over because there is nothing else for them to do. You imagine for one second the cops in Atlanta are chasing mopeds? I bet some of the Tech boys made that big lawyer’s party last night if practice hadn’t wore them out. 900 wealthy black people at the Omni hotel, you think that scene plays out in Athens. Barney would have had his gun out and shooting his one bullet through the ceiling.
