Lewis looks better; Rhodes still out

Georgia Tech took the field in full pads today, and an early look at strong safety Jamal Lewis shows little indication of the ankle sprain that sidelined him for the latter stages of Wednesday’s second practice session.

However, with the defense practicing a nickel package, Lewis and Pat Clark (excused from practice a couple of days ago) weren’t on the field. Joe Gaston and Jake Blackwood were. The second team unit was Morgan Burnett, Mario Butler, Martin Frierson, Tony Clark and Dominique Reese.

On the other hand, Lewis is working in individual drills. Clark, though, isn’t even at practice today. If he isn’t available when the games begin, that’s a big blow to the Yellow Jackets’ depth at defensive back.

On offense, Matt Rhodes remains present but not participating. Coach Chan Gailey said Wednesday that his starting left guard had been excused from practice but did not give a reason. Rhodes and right tackle A.J. Smith (right elbow in a sling) are on stationary bicycles on “the beach,” the area where injured players exercise during practice.

Freshman defensive end Jason Peters is back practicing today after sitting out Wednesday afternoon’s practice because of illness.

Butler and Burnett? It looks as though they are making a push to not redshirt.

gtfan55: You might be right. Butler and Burnett both have received a lot of coaching. But the situation might say more about Tech’s lack of depth at defensive back than about what Burnett and Butler have done thus far in practice. Remember, when you get to the second team nickel defense you’re putting your No. 10 db on the field. In reality, you aren’t going to use your No. 10 db unless you’re in a blowout or you’ve had a lot of injuries. Pat Clark isn’t out here today, either.

How is Dunmon fairing in replacing Rhodes? Is Cord back with the 2 or is Claytor still in his spot?

Jamal Lewis is out there with the first unit in seven-on-seven drills.

Freshman Clyde Yandell got a large number of snaps at first-team left tackle during inside drills. Andrew Gardner is here and didn’t have any obvious injury. It might have been the heat. Yandell does appear to have a leg up on the other freshman offensive linemen.

I didn’t see Cord in there, though he is out on the field. Voss was in there in place of Rhodes.

Dunmon is playing a lot of center. Kevin Tuminello is getting over an illness and also doesn’t tolerate triple-digit heat well.

Cord Howard is in there now with the second unit in 11-on-11.

Thanks for keeping up with the OL. Strength on the lines will be nice.

Is Jason Paters being looked at exclusively at DE? He seems like a good wide body for DT.

I have been hearing that there have been a lot of drops by the recievers mainly due to timing. Do you feel as though the timing between the qb’s and wr’s are getting better?

Mike, I have heard that the wr’s have been struggling a little lately with the timing. Do you feel as though the timing between qb’s and wr’s and recievers have improved and how are they looking today?

Mike, What’s your apprasial of QB Bennett, Matt Causey, & Josh Nesbitt—especially Bennett. Does it look like he’ll be a 60% plus passer? It sounds like Tech’s major weakness is at corner back, you agree?

By Coach

Tech’s biggest weakness is kickoff coverage. It has been a disaster for years. Now I read that Chan wants to put the most violent players on the coverage team.

Bobby Dodd stressed speed while being under control and made sure he had the best tackling players on the coverage team. Dodd also considered the kickoff as the most productive play in football in that more games were won or lost depending upon the way the play was executed - both kicking and returning.

The kickoff is not a play to give walk ons and players without starting ability a chance to get in the game.

Only players with the skill set to contribute to a win should be on the field. As far as violence goes, if a player does not like to hit and be hit, he should not be playing Div 1 football.

Is Pat Clark missing because of injury or other reasons? I know the heat and illness are taking their toll on some guys, I just wonder if any are missing for academic or “personal” reasons.

How is Rashaun Grant being used? He’s kind of a wild card in our offense.

Lastly, who appears to be the most complete wide reciever? James Johnson? Bebe Thomas?

Thanks guys

I wouldn’t worry too much about the wide receivers. Greg Smith has had a very good preseason, and Damaryius Thomas remains a huge talent, and James Johnson made an excellent catch today on a fade route and continues to show the ability to get open. (He had some drops the first few days of practice, and Thomas had some drops the last couple of days, but the season is more than three weeks away.) I’m not sure what you mean by “most complete” receiver. They’ve all got strengths and weaknesses.

Rashaun Grant remains a multi-use guy, part receiver, part running back, a bit more of the receiver part than the running back part.

We have written about Pat Clark before. The answer seems to be that it involves academics and something else. Tech has a number of players with academic issues.

Peters is a defensive end, as far as I’ve seen.

I wouldn’t hazard a guess what Taylor Bennett’s completion percentage would be. He’s not getting hit in practice. He has been sharper some days than others. That’s typical for a quarterback in preseason.

Matt Causey is a basketball point guard; I’ve been at football practice and haven’t seen any basketball pickup games, so I don’t know how he’s doing.

Josh Nesbitt needs time. I think he might be of value as a running quarterback this year, if Tech decides it needs one.

Mike,

When you state the following:

“Tech has a number of players with academic issues”, do you mean there may be some academic casualties before the season starts or are we OK through first semester?

In comparing what you have seen of this years defense and last years defense how do we look in terms of speed and playmaking?

How are Tashard Choice, Jamal Lewis, and Darrell Robertson looking so far? They all played with my oldest son as they were growing up. They are all very good young men.

To the fine fans who support the Georgia Institute of Technology or as we refer to “north avenue trade school”: What is y’alls take on the extremely potent and always dangerous Yellow Jackets’ chances of winning the ACC this coming season? I see no reason why the pale coats will can’t escape with more than one loss. Your QB is much better than the previous sanp-master and a lefty, TB may bring back the ghost that was Kim King—-one of the finest to snap masters to wear the white and gold. Maybe the Jackets can handle all of their major ACC foes this coming season. Take care and here is hoping Georgia Tech wins every game going into the UGA game. That’s where the streak ends; but, that loss to UGA will only make the Insects meaner and madder and win the ACCC game.

Go You Hairy Dawgs and stay safe, ye old fellow foes.

Nice post Hairy Dawg. Civilized and all.

I too, will be rooting for Georgia to win every game, except for the showdown between UGA and GT. Tech alumni that I am, I still can’t actively root for a Georgia football team (whether Tech or UGA) to do poorly.

GT can win the ACC. The big game is on a Thursday night in Atlanta, VT vs GT. If we can clear that hurdle, we could very well run the slate clean if we play up to our potential.

Can’t wait for Sept 1 :)

Hairy Dawgs No 2,

Are you aware that WE (tech grads/fans) also refer to Tech as the “North Avenue Trade School”. It’s not an offensive name, and it’s certainly notbsome clever backhanded expression you and your buddies came up with…. We sell shirts that say that exact phrase on them.

To answer your question, I thnk we have a good chance to go back to the ACCCgame.

PS: “Pale Coats” is miles away from being clever, and barely makes any sense at all.

For once…a civilized post. Thnks Hairy Dog and good luck until that fateful day in late November.

M&M (Mike and Matt)- Any chances that this extremem heat causes some concern for what the coaches are trying to insert as far as packages and timing. If we go 2 weeks with limited practices (b/c the heat is forecast to be here another week), then we really miss alot of time in terms of preparation. Any chance of gaining a day or two in the Dome or Bubble?

M&M- I forgot to ask about what you’ve noticed about Bond’s influence on the offense as opposed to previous years w/ Nix and Gailey

Thanks for all of your posts! Keep em coming!

Well, isn’t all this hand-holding just fine. My daddy was a professor at Tech, I’m a grad, and my son is a grad. We all say “TO HELL WITH GEORGIA”.

If Georgia Tech wants to improve it’s kickoff coverage tell the team that a Tickle Pile will be held at the point the ball carrier hits the ground. That way they will rush to the ball.

Win one for the “TICKLER”.

Coach, Gailey is no Dodd or Ross or GOL he may be another I should say he is an other Lewis. Don’t mention Gailey in the light of Dodd. Gailey couldn’t touch Dodd’s strap or even be his water boy. Lets admit it now Gailey is a nothing. Jerry Jones knew it as does the majority of the Tech fan base. He said he was handling the special teams now where are we 119 out of 119. Good job Gailey good job.
