That’s not Calvin
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings from Rose Bowl Field, where I am blogging live from Georgia Tech’s first football practice. (This is Mike, by the way; Matt and I made a last-minute switch on who would write this blog.)
Anyway, the team just started stretching, and the best news is there’s nobody on “the beach,” the area where injured players hang out during practice. Of course, this is a non-contact practice, just helmets and shorts, no pads, and nobody’s had time to get hurt, but things do look pretty good in that department. Whoops, I wrote too soon. Defensive lineman Logan Walls, a freshman from Dawsonville, just went to the Beach.
The strangest sight for a guy who has been watching Tech the past three years is to see No. 21. That’s not Calvin Johnson. That’s Jonathan Dwyer, and he’s a lot shorter (five inches) and looks nothing like Johnson. Tech fans hope he’s got some of the same star power, though, and the choice of number shows he’s got no shortage of confidence.
As usual for an early practice, there’s plenty of roster confusion. I’ve got a lot of new numbers to learn, and the addition of 12 walk-ons last night creates even more “who’s he?” head-scratching.
Tech added a new guy to its long list of potential punt returners: Jerrard Tarrant, a freshman from Carrollton, joined returnees like James Johnson, Andrew Smith, Pat Clark, Tyler Evans … the list goes on.
Matt plans to update you on the offensive line later today.

Wes,
First two of your watch group to flash were Nesbitt and Bay-Bay, RS-Fr. WR Demaryius Thomas. And not in good ways.
Nesbitt had a hard time handling snaps in an early drill, fumbling at least one, and Thomas ran a nice out-and-up against S Djay Jones to gain a 2-yard cushion down the right sideline. Taylor Bennett’s high, arching pass came down 5 yards deep in the end zone, and onto Thomas’ hands.
He dropped it.
Oh, was Jon Tenuta barking nearby. Or was that mocking?

Don’t forget that Jonathan Smith was a pretty good football player who wore #21 before Calvin did. Hopefully Dwyer can keep the trend going.

Wes, I’ll try. I can tell you that Colin Peek looks healthy. Matt’s going to write about A.J., so I don’t want to steal his thunder. Bebe just caught a pass on the first play of 7-on-7 drills. In a three-receiver set, he’s running with James Johnson and Greg Smith. Bebe just made another catch, and Mark Schlabach of ESPN.com just said, “That guy’s got some good hands.” I didn’t say it, because I saw it all spring, and frankly, it will take a lot to surprise me.

Calvin’s gone, but Tech still has tall receivers. Newcomers D.J. Donley (6-4) and Willie White (6-3) are every bit of their listed heights. White is rail thin. He’s going to need to beef up a bit.

Nesbitt just threw a laser-like pass to hit WR Andrew Smith on a post route. Smith slipped the coverage nicely to get open. The ball was just a hair behind Smith and on his hip rather than out in front of him, but a nice ball nonetheless as the coverage window was closing very quickly.
Smith dropped it.

Atljacket, depth chart stuff is hard to do this early from the first practice, because I haven’t seen 11-on-11 yet. Your No. 1 DBs are Jamal Lewis and Djay Jones at safety and Avery Roberson and Jahi Word-Daniels at corner, with Pat Clark playing corner and Roberson playing nickel in the nickel set. Your LBs are Philip Wheeler and Gary Guyton and either Shane Bowen or Anthony Barnes at the other spot. It really doesn’t make much difference which one of those two takes the first snap in practice; every time we ask about it, coaches tell us they’re in a dead heat.

OK, a quick depth chart update now that I’ve seen 11-on-11. No surprises.
Bowen worked ahead of Barnes. Travis Chambers and Matt Braman were the other backup LBs.
Michael Johnson remains behind Darrell Robertson, but to answer a question he looked fine. Other backup DLs were Elris Anyaibe, Robert Hall and Marcus Harris.
Backup DBs were Joe Gaston and Jake Blackwood at safety, Pat Clark and Dominique Reese at corner.
On offense, the first scare of the day came when Taylor Bennett threw a pass and hit his throwing hand on something (a helmet?). The pass wobbled, and the hand hurt enough that Bennett was shaking it a lot. But he took the next snap, looked fine, and if I weren’t blogging live I would never have mentioned it to you.
No big surprises on the offensive depth chart, either. The No. 2s were Calvin Booker at QB, Jamaal Evans at RB, Austin Barrick at TE, Jacob Lonowski, Dan Voss, Trey Dunmon, Cord Howard and Jason Hill on the line. The WRs were returnees Andrew Smith and Jonathan Malone, though I don’t expect them to be the No. 2s long-term. Don’t read anything into Evans being at No. 2 RB; Rashaun Grant works with the No. 1s behind Tashard Choice.

Anyone see the article online where Tech is ranked 26th in the preseason polls?
Now, all of you shut your mouths about “overrated”. You won’t be able whine and cry about ND being “overrated” this year when they STILL beat you on opening day. Vegas has posted odds of ND winning the National Championship at 40/1, but somehow the 26th ranked team in the country (Georgia Tech) is a 200/1 shot to win it. Who is overrated now?
Davey - hope you see this. I remember you from last year and yes I remembered that you were a minor (at the time) and that your family has a “tech pedigree” and all that stuff. I thought with another year of seasoning you would get the “schtick” that I throw out here in fun for the upcoming ND vs GT throwdown. GTGreg gets it, pdiddyGT gets it, and a host of others do too - Ali needed Frazier, you guys need me.
And on that note - if you don’t watch it Davey the ND Cabal can make sure that the girl you were so fond of last year in Chemistry never gives you her number. We have that kind of power, we have that kind of reach.. We are ND.

OK SOOOOOOOOOOO CHECK IT OUT..IM REALLY SICK AND TIRED OF ALL THE TECHIES GETTING ON THE UGA BLOGS TALKING TRASH OVER THESE PAST COUPLE MONTHS….SOOOO I DECIDED TO RETURN THE FAVOR.
FIRST I’M REALLY TIRED OF HEARING,” OH, WE DON’T REGGIE BALL ANYMORE, SO WE ARE GETTING GET UGA NUMBER THIS YEAR”…PSHHHHHHHHHH..LOOK, LET’S FACE IT REGGIE WAS THE STARTING QB FOR A REASON AND TAYLOR BENNETT WASN’T.
LOOK I, FOR ONE, WILL BE THE FIRST TO SAY THAT REGGIE WAS NOT VERY GOOD, BUT AGAIN HE DID ALMOST BEAT NOTRE DAME, AND DID HELP TECH PUT UP A BEATING ON VA TECH.
BOTTOM LINE IS CHOICE IS THE ONLY THING THAT TECH HAS GOING FOR THEM…AS A UGA FAN I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE HIM ON OUR SQUAD, BUT THAT’S ALL TECH HAS.
LAST YEAR WAS TECH CHANCE TO GET A “W” OVER UGA FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS, AND OF COURSE THEY CHOKED…STAFFORD WILL OWN TECH UNTIL HE GOES #1 IN THE DRAFT….BUT HONESTLY, AND SERIOUSLY WHY DO ALL THE TECH FANS ACT LIKE UGA IS NOT A GOOD PROGRAM, WHEN UGA RANKS #5 IN WINS SINCE 2001, AND # 12 ALL TIME, WITH 2, THATS TWO CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS, IN 5 YEARS. WHAT HAS TECH DONE?? SERIOUSLY….WHAT HAVE THEY DONE..I MEAN IM NOT TRYING TO TALK TRASH, I SERIOUSLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT GEORGIA TECH HAS DONE IN THE PAST 10 OR 15 YEARS??…AND YES I KNOW ABOUT THE 1990 “SHARED” NATIONAL TILE..CONGRATS, BUT OTHER THAN THAT WHAT ELSE HAS TECH DONE???
WHEN YOU GUYS START BEATING TEAMS OTHER THAN TROY, MARYLAND, SAMFORD, AND UNC ( BY ONLY 7 POINTS)…THAN YOU GUYS CAN COME OVER TO THE UGA BLOG SITE AND TALK ALL THE TRASH YOU WANT.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shivas, you have me confused with one of those landscaping UGA fans. If you weren’t a Tech fan I would think you probably couldn’t do a calculation like that correctly, but because you are - nice one, however I pay more than that for a good cigar, because I can. Also I have given several employees a three week assignment to spy on Gailey and company. You will never discover them since all I hire for my accounting and finance positions are CPA/Ninjas. Not easy to find, but worth the wait because of what they do with Accounts Receivable.
Contactbuzz sounds like a man who has lost on his share of “sure things” before. Also you are looking for an insult where there isn’t one. I’m merely suggesting that the “ND is overrated” won’t work this time, at least until Week 2. I will insult when appropriate, and you will not mistake it.
stinGTime - leaving you out of the ones who get it was an oversight. And yes, last year we were in the stands praying to Touchdown Jesus that Chan Gailey would forget he had other QB’s.

ND 40:1 and GT 200:1 even though GT is rated higher……..
The primary reason is because ND has an easier schedule and a better chance of getting into the National Championship game (due to the media bias) than GT even if they have the same record.
This provides even more proof that GT is underated each and every year. If you look at the history, GT almost always finishes higher in the final polls than they were originally ranked. Even in 1990 when we shared the National Championship, GT was not even ranked in the preseason polls; how freak’n ridiculus!! By the way, Colorado did not deserve a share of the title due to the 5 down thing. A playoff game between GT and Colorado would have proven GT was a much better team in 1990.
The ACC is always underated and the SEC is always overated. Compare the preseason and post season rankings and you will see what I mean; nearly every year the ACC has a increase and the SEC has a decrease in the number of top 25 teams after the games have been played. AND most polls will also indicate/prove the ACC teams play a more difficult schedule than the SEC teams (top to bottom).
One more thing I have noticed……the preseason rankings are driven more by EASY schedules than anything else. Teams which have a good chance of winning all or most of their games because of the easy schedule get ranked higher than they should. Should the polls rank the teams based on who is the best in the country or who will win the most games??
This is one more reason we need a playoff system!!

I admit the ACC had a down year in 2006 (because we lost so many players to the NFL - with a record 12 first round picks and a record 51 players drafted) so I just did a little research regarding my strength of schedule comment……..for all of you blind SEC fans (only the ones who drink the kool-aid): based on the post season polls, the SEC had a tougher SOS in 2006, but this is the first time the SEC SOS was tougher than the ACC SOS since the 2002 season. Do a little research if you do not believe me………

And, of course, idiots like you will claim that this is because the in-conference teams are ‘so very hard.’ I love to laugh at such a pompus statement that is plain wrong. If you look at the pure conference rankings, the ACC has ALWAYS been ranked ahead of the SEC with one exception - last year.

ugarulz,
You forgot to do some research prior to your over-the-top post.
All conferences have some tough games, but facts are facts and the post season polls verify the ACC almost always has a tougher SOS than the SEC (top to bottom).
Also, you made one huge mistake……three of the National Championships you claimed for the SEC were actually won by GT when GT was in the SEC. The cuurent ACC teams have won 21 National Championships since 1917. The current SEC teams have won 19 National Championships (formally recognized by the BCS or the National Championship Foundation) since 1917. The SEC web-site your are using MIGHT be a little biased.
Take a look at the following web-site www.ncaa.org/champadmin/iafootballpast_champs.html from the NCAA FOOTBALL web-site if you want to know the truth.
Or you can continue believing whatever you want to believe and continue sounding like an idoit every time your speak.
ACC Football has a very impressive tradition if you are willing to take an honest look.

I’m not saying it’s not a great conference, but really, it gets more praise than it should, just like the Big 10. With that said I’ll begin to start crap with you until school starts and have no time.
First off how many starters are you guys returning? And those classes weren’t so great until the last two. So you hoping that a bunch of frosh and sophmores are going to beat Juniors and Seniors?
I do remember you last year. You were saying that you guys were going to win a national championship and tech was just a bump on the road to glory. You cried yourself to sleep everynight watching the nightly update of ND on ESPN. Now your stuck watching updates on CJ’s rookie season. Your stuck watching how Quinn is being captain douchebag of the nfl.
That is neither here nor their. I for one want to go on record saying I don’t think ND is overrated. I think tech is better then them period. The only thing you guys got go for you is TD Jesus. Too bad Church ain’t on Saturday because no miracles will be answered Sept 1. Just football in the trenches. By the way tech has been rated the #3 DL and #4 OL in the nation. But those are number and don’t mean anything. But I like our odds against your youthful team. Luckily we don’t play you guys in a couple of years.

I didn’t know that only UGA fans and fans from the SEC were the only ones who knew anything about football. Us Techies wouldn’t know anything about the sport cause all we do is allegedly participate in tickle piles (which was harmless joke on a satyrical site)and do math. I guess we need to get arrested more often, cheat annually, spoon the backup QB, beat the crap out of kids smaller than us, go to Hargrove in order to qualify academically long enough to play football and be a tard the rest of our lives, live in a drunken state, and drive tractors to know anything about football. I guess then we’ll be cool, too, huh?
By Irishcane
August 4, 2007 2:25 AM | Link to this
Davey, I posted on here looking forward to last year’s game as well. I definitely had the Irish overrated in my own opinion that mirrored the national polls. As for this year, I just thank god we have the game at home because I think Tech could beat us on the flats. We escaped last year.
As for 2007, I hope the Irish can pull it out, but we are pretty young. People talk about how we don’t win the big game, but Charlie has only lost to 1 average team in two years (MSU, a rivalry game in double OT). Other than that it was USC (twice), OSU, LSU, and Michigan teams that beat up on most teams who they played. Point being…isn’t Tech an average football team? I put them between 20-30th this year and believe our young talent will overcome your experience.
As far as your question about returning starters, on offense we lost QB, RB, FB, WR, WR, and 3 OL. So when I say young, I mean real young. Defense, who knows what new D-Cord Corwin Brown will bring besides blue chip recruits. We have depth and experience in the defensive backfield but had to switch to a 3-4 because of real lack of depth at D-Line.
I also recently saw that we might have suspended a D-Lineman which would be bad news because of depth problems at the position.
Lastly, I trust that Chan Gailey and a QB that couldn’t beat out Ball will manage to trip up and give us our 1-0 start before we trip over ourselves the following week at PSU.

Hey UGAyrulz!
Who ever said Jeff Foxworthy was uneducated?
I think GTfan just proved how much of an idiot you are with something called RESEARCH! Enjoy your winning streak while you can. because it ends in Atlanta this November.

UGARULZ: you asked awhile back when GT had last beaten an SEC team. GT smacked Auburn twice (17-3 & 23-14)in 2003 and 2005 and Reggie played great both times. Hmmmmmmm

ugarulz, and other self proclaimed experts:
You all are talking smack like you personally accomplished something on the field…From my personal experience, and I can say this because I am a 4 year Letterman in football at a major Division One University here in the South who went on an earned a Law Degree, none of the players or coaches speak this way about other programs.
There is mutual respect for one another because they know what the person lining up against them is going through/has been through.
It is great for fans to support their respective teams, but classless and arrogant statements do nothing for your program but bring them embarrassment.
I would also surmise that most of the idiots making these asinine statements never even attended the University they have chosen to support…
We all know the type. On game day they drive around town with flags flapping off of their pickup’s side windows and they have magnets on the vehicle doors.
Oh yeah, when they grab for the next beer from their six pack, they are the ones with six rotten teeth in their mouth.

Can any of you Tech crybabies fill me in on the last time an ACC team won a BCS bowl game? How bout the last season the ACC has a winning record over SEC opponents? How bout the last time Georgia lost to an ACC team? 11 in a row in counting lab geeks. Even ACC “power” Virginia Tech couldn’t even take us down with a true freshmen QB running the show. The ACC is a laughable joke. If its not Wake Forest winning your crap conference its a 5 loss FSU team. Get a grip.
Keep crying babies. Georgia Tech=JOKE.

Ignoring published guidelines for punishment, Richt says the 1.2 game suspension is not a hard-and-fast rule, so two more of his criminals get only a one game suspension. He probably thinks alcohol blood level percentages are not hard-and-fast either. He’s a joke.

YOU KNOW GLENN, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, I DIDN’T HAVE THE HONOR OF ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA. I ALWAYS GREW UP WATCHING THE DAWGS AS A CHILD, AND HAD HOPES OF ONE DAY GOING TO UGA. SO, WHEN IT CAME TIME TO CHOOSE WHICH UNIVERSITY I WOULD GO TO, I UNFORTUNATELY DID NOT CHOOSE UGA. I MEAN DON’T GET ME WRONG I WAS ACCEPTED THERE, BUT INSTEAD I CHOOSE TO GO TO ANOTHER COLLEGE. SO I WENT TO A LITTLE TINY SCHOOL IN ANNAPOLIS, MD. MAYBE YOU HAVE EVEN HEARD OF IT…. THE NAVAL ACADEMY(C/O 05) I KNOW ITS NOT MUCH AND SOOOOOOOOOOO MANY PEOPLE GET IN EACH YEAR BASED ON THEIR POOR ACADEMICS. AND OF COURSE IM SURE THAT IT DOESN’T MEASURE UP TO YOUR ” D-1 SCHOOL IN THE SOUTH” OR YOUR “LAW DEGREE”. LOOK Glenn, IM HERE TO TALK ABOUT FOOTBALL THATS WHAT THIS BLOG IS FOR. ITS FOR THE SPORTS FAN, AND TRASH TALKING IS GOING TO GO ON. THATS WHAT FANS DO, WHETHER YOU LIKE OR NOT. YOU CALL IT CLASSLESS ACTIONS, BUT I CALL IT HAVING PASSION FOR THE TEAM YOU LOVE & SUPPORT!!!!!…HAVE FUN CHASING AMBULANCES.

ugarulz,
If you did, indeed, attend Annapolis, which I highly doubt as they teach respect, honesty, dignity, and honor, then you are a disgrace.
I have several friends and acquaintances who attended the Academy and their are decent, honorable people (both men and women).
I really could care less what team you support. What I do care about is that there are minors who read these posts, and ignorance breeds ignorance.
Talking smack is one thing…making personal, derogatory comments about individuals and Institutions just reinforces what a lowlife is.
Frankly, ugarulz, I have yet to see you talk about football, as you profess, only self serving hot air. If you want to talk football, talk football. If you want to talk your ignorant trash, go to the city dump and have your fill.
You might want to look up the word “libel per se” in the dictionary. Making personal comments about ones profession that are untrue and harmful, whether you knew or believed the veracity of what you have stated in writing, is an actionable tort in our legal system. Calling me an ambulance chaser is untrue and offensive.
To all of you with the “tickle pile” fetishes you keep spouting off on, whether it be directed at Ga Tech, UGA’s QB, or anyone else, might take this to heart as well.
Talking about football is what this blog is about. Any other discussions should be taken to another forum and then you can bash each other to your hearts content.
Finally, ugarulz, if you intend on trying to have a “war of words” with me, I suggest that you reconsider. It is obvious from your comments that you are clearly out of ammunition and it just wouldn’t be a fair fight.

Glenn, YES, I DID INDEED ATTENDED THE ACADEMY AND YES I PROUDLY SERVE MY COUNTRY, AND I, FOR ONE, RESENT THAT YOU CALL ME A DISGRACE.AND I HARDY BELIEVE THAT MY ACTIONS THAT I HAVE DISPLAY ON THIS BLOG IS IN NO WAY MORE VULGER THAN WHAT IS BROADCASTED ACROSS TV NETWORKS THESE DAYS..IF YOU DON’T THINK THAT ITS COMMON TO TALK TRASH(IN GOOD FUN MIND YOU) AND THAT IT DOESNT EVEN GO ON WITH THE MILITARY ACADEMY THAN YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN A ARMY/ NAVY GAME, OR SERVE IN THE ARMED FORCES. IT IS ALL IN FUN, AND LIKE I SAID BEFORE, I PROUDLY SERVE MY COUNTRY AND ITS CITIZENS, EVEN IF IT IS IRROGANT PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF. SEE, THAT IS SOMETHING I’M PROUD AND THAT WHICH SETS MYSELF APART FROM YOU………..

UGAyrulz,
Why do you continue to use all caps? Do you realise how god damn annoying and ignorant that is?
And why in the hell do you feel so compelled to post your worthless garbage comments on a GEORGIA TECH blog? Sounds like you have a problem, because I would rather vomit than read one of your disgusting wuff wuff a* licking dawg blogs with your idiot fans showing how loud they can bark.

Wow you are a bona-fide f*** moron indeed. Annapolis might want their degree back, if you ever went there, that is.

ugarulz;
When you stated in your reply that “UNFORTUNATELY DID NOT CHOOSE UGA”, your inference is that you made a mistake attending the Academy. I reiterate my comments that you are a disgrace. No loyalty, no honor, no class, and probably no teeth.
Also, when you made the comment that you proudly served your Country, and that sets you apart from me, and then made some asinine comment about me being “IRROGANT,” again, I will say that you are speaking without knowing any facts. This is another sign of you being nothing but a blowhard.
If you graduated from the Academy, then you should understand that when I tell you that I have USAA Insurance, which is only provided to Military officers, and their dependants, so I have been involved with serving our Country. Believe it or not, people can go to Universities, other than the Academies, even on to Graduate School, and still enlist. Don’t preach to me about serving our Country you arrogant SOB.
Finally, I suggest that you learn how to run spell check. There are free programs available, if you can figure out how to locate them. Maybe, then, you won’t be so IRROGANT/IGNORRANT (or for the rest of us, we can read that as arrogant/ignorant).

Glenn,
Agree with everything, but USAA is available to all military members, not just officers.
As for ugarulz, you make all of us in uniform look bad about now. It is a shame that people like you even got accepted into one of the service academies, if you did indeed attend.
I have been in the Air Force for 18 1/2 years now, and it never ceases to amaze me how immature the younger troops are now. Most want everything handed to them, and expect to have great things happen for doing nothing. If you graduated from the USNA, then as a Naval officer I would think you would have the smarts to stay away from situations such as this. BTW, where are you stationed at, and what do you do?

I found this blog after googling for some rose bowl information … anyways, I just want to say that ugarulz is an embarrassment. The all caps thing … christ, make it stop. Good luck in November, you’re going to need a big night from Tashard Choice as the passing game will once again be on lock down. Calvin Johnson’s career yardage against UGA = 71. pwned
