Who benefitted from redshirts?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Gimme your best guesses which players coming off redshirt years are most likely to help this season at Tech, and don’t list everybody. No more than six.
My list:
Fr. WR Demaryius Thomas. Might start.
Fr. LB Anthony Barnes. Might start after long NCAA-induced wait.
So. TE Colin Peek. Probable starter.
Jr. QB Calvin Booker. In running to be the backup.
Fr. WR Corey Earls. No. 3 on one side, but true FR D.J. Donley/Willie Whitelurk.
Fr. CB Dominique Reese. Quality prep QB; athletic, but true Fr. Mario Butler in wings.
Also, I’ll blog twice tomorrow, once during practice at around 10:45 a.m., and again after all is done and then said.

WR Thomas. Will emerge as top receiving weapon.
TE Peek. Will start and benefit from Bond’s offense.
LB Barnes. Athlete has shot at starting LB spot.
WR Earls. Deep threat will see action and get a chance to hit the big one deep now and then.
LB Osahon Tongo. Big recruit has chance to come back healthy and contribute to LB depth.
QB Booker. Has chance to solidify himself at #2.

I know this statement does not answer the question, but memories of our last SEC reject QB, A.J. Suggs, still make me sick. Thus, I’m a little reluctant to expect much of Calvin Booker. That’s unfair to Mr. Booker certainly and I trust that practice will sort out the depth order for QB.

Thomas - Will Start and be a big time player
AT Barnes - Will compete in fall, and I predict win the job
Travis Chambers - wont’ get much PT b/c of who is ahead of him, but look for him to make and immediate and needed sp teams impact on kickoff
Peek - starting TE
Earls - should be WR #4
Quincy Kelly - backup FB due to Brays’ injury; and is a beast. I hope he gets reps behind mike cox, but not sure here…

My list:
Fr. WR Demaryius Thomas. KO’d by Zbikowski in the second round, I mean second quarter.
Fr. LB Anthony Barnes. Seen halfway through the first quarter with his hands on his hips marvelling at how fast that big John Carlson is as he is running a seam route for ND’s first touchdown.
So. TE Colin Peek. Solid ballplayer. Looking for a good 1st game from this guy. (ND’s in a 3-4 this year and I suspect coverage from their linebackers to be “scattered” in games 1,2, and 3 this season)
Jr. QB Calvin Booker. In running to be the second victim of the Morrice Richardson/Toryan Smith sack beatdown (two GA products, you guys have to love that).
Fr. WR Corey Earls. Who?
Fr. CB Dominique Reese. Quality prep QB; A Charlie Weis offense attacks young CB’s the same way Charlie attacks Golden Corral - viciously, relentlessly, showing no mercy.

White Boy, thanks for confirming you’re still a moron…hadn’t seen a post from you in a few hours. We were worried.
I’m not giving six. I’m giving two: Peek and Thomas. They will be major players in the Tech offense this year. I’m predicting at least 4 TDs each (I really think 6, but have to be conservative). When you’ve got a 6’4” guy and a 6’6” guy in the redzone, those are just weapons everyone else doesn’t have.
If you want to see how useful a tall guy can be in the red zone, look at tape against ND.

Whiteboy, go waste your time elsewhere. You’re overrated EVERY year yall are anything close to decent. The 3 times the media put you in a BCS game, yall peed your pants. I think the total score from those 3 games is what?? 116-43. Yep, haven’t won a bowl game in your last 10 tries. You have to go back thirteen years to see your Irish win a bowl game. The media is why you won the game last year, reggie ball would never have been able to draw that “helmet to helmet” call as national posterboy quinn did runnin out of the pocket across the line of scrimmage. this year yall are in for a nightmarish 2-6 start at best losing your first 3 games by a similar margin to your BCS games. You’ll find out who Earls is in the second half, he’s easily faster than ANY Irish player. Go eat your lucky charms.

OGE,
Calvin Booker was very much liked at Auburn and the battle for the starting spot was close. If given the opportunity to play, I do not expect another AJ Suggs. AJ was boo’ed off the field in Knoxville, Auburn wasn’t happy to see CB leave.
Peek will have a great year, there is no video on GT throwing to the tight end, its all on 8mm.
We’ll lean on Thomas and Barnes, they should both step up. The rest will play roles, but not stand out.
Has a practice schedule been published?

1 This Collin Peek kid is BY FAR the most valuable Fr-RS we’ve got.We lost Mike Matthews and George Cooper to graduation last year and Peek has got to be the man for the Yellow Jackets.
2 Demaryius Thomas - WRKid is big and people will get flashbacks of Calvin.
3 Correy Earls - WRHR threat
4 Anthony Barnes - LBI’ve heard Shane Bowen may hold a slight edge over A.T. Barnes for the starting OLB position…but even if Barnes isn’t named starter on Day 1, he’ll be seeing plenty of action this year.
Ain’t got a clue for the rest of em’.

I think Booker could start. I don’t think he is involved in the Tickle Pile controversy.

Jared - please don’t go into bowl games. I was stuck up in White Plains when my private jet was getting serviced watching Tech just get hammered by … get this… Utah! Hahaha what an embarrassment. If you mean that ND got smoked by the best team in the land in 2005 and in 2006 (OSU and LSU were stout both years) you would be right! We were just heartbroken cashing that BCS check!!! $14.5Million in 05, 4.5Million in 06. We won’t see a BCS game this year, but that’s okay-cause when we don’t make it we still get $1.5Million.
All of you keep crying “overrated”, but no where this preseason have I seen anyone with ND ranked higher than Tech.
Jared, go make me a cold cut combo you androgenous pitchman.

gte578e - Superman did score a touchdown against ND at Grant Field, but just think what that unreal talent could have done playing for Weis with Quinn throwing him the ball. Actually, just think about him playing for anyone but Chan Gailey.
I know what tall receivers can do - Stovall and Samardzija wore out everyone in 2005.
And don’t worry about me - I’ll be here every day until the game.

Man… I forgot about you PTFMWB… it was pretty awesome. You talked a mean game last year, and your team backed into a win with some help from the AMAZING ACC referees. Tech’s players remember that. I hope big Televen refs are calling this years game… if they are, and they call it fairly, then your chances amount to a fart in the wind. In terms of playcalling, bet on your secondary having to deal with more than sideline fades this year… I don’t think that they’ll do too well under that kind of pressure. Furthermore, I’m sure that Bond knows to run away from the home bench, just so there’s no way that Weis can claim being slapped by a Tech player.
ND is going down hard (it’s a good thing that you have that nice tall grass to cushion your fall). You should quit prognosticating and go into comedy… I enjoyed your pitchman comment.
I still think that Earls is going to open some eyes.

GTGreg - everything you say about last year… is true. But that doesn’t change anything, understand? As far as “fart in the wind”, are we talking Charlie Weis fart here? Because if we are my Yellow Jacket friend, that’s even money!
On a serious football note - really - the one thing that truly stood out to me in that game last year was the conditioning difference between the two teams. In my opinion (a real one), the Tech players just ran out of gas in the second half of the game. Also if I remember correctly there were a lot of hurt Tech players in the weeks leading up to the season, hamstrings, pulls, etc. Who’s running the conditioning out there on the flats? The guy at ND is a really good one - except for the work he does with Weis.
GO IRISH

How can I possibly still be a freshman? I left high school at least 3 years ago and actually graduated at some point in the intervening years. Now I am on track to graduate college at the age of 26. The NCAA has some crazy rules.

Who are you trying to impress by downgrading people that you don’t know. Does it make you feel better. Do you pat your self on the back everytime.
I bet you got kicked off the ND message boards because your obnoxious even for them. Sheesh I’m out of hear and back on the hive.
PS Winklejohn I really like your blogs just not the a holes that post on them. Hope to see you at a Tech practices!
