The freshmen arrive
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This week one of the most heralded groups of Georgia Tech football recruits arrives on campus. Their first day of classes is June 18.
Derrick Morgan and Steven Threet got a one-semester head start, of course, but now they will be joined by the other members of the class Giff Smith assembled. It’s an amazing group, noteworthy not just for the depth of talent but also, football staffers say, for the interconnectedness. From what I’ve been told, these guys aren’t going to have to take a lot of time to get to know each other; they’ve been texting and talking for months.
How quickly will Nick Claytor get onto the field at offensive tackle? How does athletic quarterback Josh Nesbitt fit into an offense in which the starter is a passer, not a runner? Will D.J. Donley mesh so well with Taylor Bennett in summer workouts he’ll be catching passes in games this fall? What kind of career will Parade All-America running back Jonathan Dwyer have at Tech? Some things to think about as the freshman class of 2007 become, well, freshmen.

Welcome to the flats, Tech recruits! Try to quickly get into the groove of college life and focus on what’s important.
Remember that the UGAG players are being arrested for their foolishness (see today’s article) and that you are better than that!!! You have many fans and graduates cheering you on - good luck!

Yes! Look to the shining examples of Reggie Ball and Rueben Houston to show you that academics truly come first at Tech! Also, we currently have a former student under federal indictment for terrorism!! Shoot for the stars guys!! These GT players and students are making national news!!
This year, we are offering 4 tickets, 2 programs, 2 hats, 2 hot-dogs, 2 cokes, a pom-pom and a degree in civil engineering for only $29.99!!
Also, given the declining American student population at Tech, be sure to brush up on your Indian, Korean and Arabic languages to get around campus. Surely these Tech students, who come from all over the world to obtain a degree from Tech and then leave to use their knowledge in their home countries, will be providing 60% sell out crowds for years to come. To Hell With Georgia!!
Also, no need to worry about female distractions …

I’m looking forward to the upcoming season! Here’s hoping the freshman do well, both academically and athletically. Most of all, I hope they enjoy the Tech experience.
JustMe, I’ve noticed you posting on the Tech blogs. Would you happen to be an alum?

Anyone else notice that Tech’s new coordinator listed 4 Confederate Officers as people he admired most, among them Nathan Bedford Forrest, organizer of the Ku Klux Klan. WOW! He’ll be popular with his players.

A long way to go for these young players…but a lot for fans to be excited about. Keep your eye on Brad Jefferson. IMO he’ll be on the field SOONER rather than later. Pretty well regarded coming out of HS. Outstanding track guy, and my pick for the ‘sleeper’ of this highly rated bunch.

You know Steve, I don’t know if you realized it or not, but you just hit the nail on the head with how good our recruiting class was this year. We’ve got a solid three-star linebacker coming in that puts up pretty good numbers, yet he’s apt to be a “sleeper” because of the talent that came in around him.
For those of you who constantly complain that Chan isn’t doing anything to change the program, I beg to differ. This is change, and change for the good.

Freshmen: Stay away from The Varsity for a couple of months until you can build up the cast-iron stomach needed (I love it, but….). Stay away from the seemingly innocuous building up Spring from The Varsity where all the big fancy cars are next to the new supermarket (wait until you’re old enough or better yet, wait until you sign a pro deal and you can treat everyone there inside).

Doubledog you obviously are ignorant of the history of the South. White people were denied the right to vote for several years after the War Between The States and the occupation troops of yhe Federal Army did a lousey job of enforcing the law. This made it necessary to establish enforcement groups such as the KKK and the White Camellia. General Forest, whom Gen. Lee called his “best general” and Gen. Sherman called “the most remarkable officer in the War on either side” resigned from the KKK in the early 1870’s and advised others to do the same since the organization was no longer needed. Whites were again allowed to vote and elect sheriffs and other law enforcement officerd.

This group of freshmen will form the nucleus of the team in 2008. I hope some contribute this year but with the talnet we have on campus we may not need but a few of them. We need another class behind this one and then i think we will be solid. This year starting 16 or 17 juniors and seniors should be a great ride.

Wow, JustMe, you’re like 45. Probably 47 cause you took 6 plus years to graduate. You couldn’t even get into your own college. Shut up and let people who actually go to college talk $hit to each other. Go back to your wife and kids old balls.

Thank you Senior Citizen. How surprised am I at the moronic comments of DoubleDawg? Not very. Some “Southerners” just are not very aware of their own heritage, which is sad. Well, on second thought, wasnt Civil War history taught in high school? I think most Georgia fans curriculum ends in junior high, so that explains it. Forrest is widely regarded as the greatest cavalry officer in the Civil War, including JEB Stuart. When people accuse him of being racist because of the KKK thing, it makes me want to laugh. F’in ignorant morons. And by the way, which Confederate officers did he list?

I hope we’re better at football than we are at history. What’s been written so far wouldn’t have gotten the history team to the Emerald Bowl.
Forrest was the Confederate commander at the massacre of black Federal troops at Fort Pillow.
Forrest was a co-founder of the KKK, which lynched thousands of Afro-American citizens throughout the south and midwest. The group was founded on the use of illegal force and terror; that was their method of operation from the beginning.
Those treasonous lawbreaking secessionists couldn’t vote for a few years? What to do? How about starting a terrorist organization to murder people of color and deny them the right to vote? For 80 years?
Yeah, that’s the ticket!
Coach Bond is a foolish and insensitive man. There was no need to wade into this quagmire. He could have been a closet admirer of Confederate Ku Klux Klan founders forever and no one would have known or cared. When it comes to praising Klan founders, “Don’t ask, don’t tell” is a real good idea.
Why in the world would you voluntarily say you admire a man who founded a secret race-based organization that killed and terrorized hundreds of American citizens because of their skin color, knowing that you are about to work with the ancestors of some of those very people? It is stupid beyond comprehension, and trying to undo it is going be one long “I don’t beat my wife” exercise.
“There’s been some misunderstanding about why I admire Ku Klux Klan founder Nathan Bedford Forrest, and I really want to clear that up. You see, his calvary tactics …”
Oh yeah, that’s gonna work.
And it will - very fairly - be used against him in recruiting. And if folks think this is merely some dim distant historical topic in the African American community, they are very much mistaken.
Gailey should buy the largest cork he can find and stuff it in Bond’s mouth asap, before he starts explaining how much he respected Bull Connor’s “organizational skills.” (“Connor really knew how to flood a zone with violent racist cops. We can learn a lot from that.”)

Gandhi is right. This is a lose-lose for Tech football. Who cares what a football coach thinks about history. He should stick to the running game or something. This will be the subject of a whispering campaign on the recruiting trail, where every little thing counts. What a dumb thing to say. I’ll bet we haven’t heard the last of this.

IM ‘66, JustMe, back when there was an I before the M.
We can stay silent about it if we choose - you can bet the other guys won’t, just like we wouldn’t if they were dumb enough to say this. Gailey should get out in front on this before we’re hopelessly behind.

This guy is a perfect Tech coach. 4 out of his 5 heroes are losers with excuses (The other team was way better, but we did so well, for a while anyway, we had a great plan, we were noble, but the odds were too great, it wasn’t our fault, we kept it close for a while.) Loser Confederate generals and Klansmen are perfect role models for the program. If only the war - I mean, the game- hadn’t lasted so long, we’d have won. Why do we have to play 4 years- I mean, quarters? Football or war- couldn’t win in Maryland, couldn’t win in Virginia, and lost in Atlanta. At least Grant Field is named for a winner- that’s why we always win there.

I suppose admiration for any Confederate general could be considered racist. Gandi should read Sherman’s memoir-he was about as racist as they come. Besides, you UGA slugs should be worrying about whether the Clark County Jail exercise yard is big enough to hold football practice instead of putting your inane crap on a Tech blog.

Why don’t you Tech Civil War football fans get together and re-enact a victory over Georgia? That’s the only way you’ll experience one. You know - drag out your 1952 uniforms, talk about Aunt Fanny’s cabin, pretend you’re in Buckhead and that the boys in the white uniforms are still ruling the roost. No wonder your coach dreams of the good ol’ days when JEB and Robert E and ol’ Bobby God were on top. That’s about the last time you had two decent seasons in a row. Not to worry, though, your new O-coach has his sights firmly fixed - on 145 years ago. Excellent. If you can just fight the Battle of Gettysburg one more time, if Reggie just knew what down it was, if you had just fallen on that fumble …

If a UGA coach had said such a thing the AJC would plaster it all over the front page of the entire paper. But a Georgia Tech coach said it so lets talk about the incoming freshmen. What a joke.

I almost never read or post on a Tech blog anymore because it is impossible to keep the conversation on the subject. I peeked in here to see if there was actually any normal football conversation and, surprise surpise, the usual steady diet of crap. Without fail, some dumba$$ UGA clown comes in and turns the conversation from a blog about Tech sports to UGA-whatever or the standard “Tech sucks” mantra because they don’t actually have anything intelligent to add to the conversation. And there seems to be very few blogs in the AJC that don’t somehow turn to race. How you people get onto this $*!t is amazing to me. Those writing this stuff need to get a life seriously.

Thanks Davey. UGA knows deep down that GT has caught up to them in talent and depth. It took them 4 years of Reggie Ball to overlook the fact that everyone else around Ball was getting better. Now that he’s gone, they know its a done deal. UGA will lose to GT this year. And this is from a Florida fan who knows quality football. GT will be a team that YOU dawg fans need to recognize over the next few years.

I wish all everyone commenting on John Bond’s interest in four Confederate generals from the persective of military history had taken the trouble to actually read the article in which Bond made his statements. There is nothing, NOTHING, about admiring them for their politics, personalities, views on race relations, or anything like that. He commented solely on the unique characteristics of each’s military tactics, which is a legitimate field of study and a purely nonpolitical statement. UGA people, Tech people, and the reactionary boob posting as Gandhi should go to this link and you’ll see that what Bond is talking about is an objective interest in military history. You people are pathetic: you defenders of the Lost Cause, just give it up, already. Your “Southern Heritage” is under assault only in your tiny little imaginations. You people who would damn anything associated with the Confederacy, would you prohibit military historians from studying the tactics of, say, Erwin Rommel? Well, by your logic, you should, because he was a Nazi general! Nothing to learn there, move along. All you dumba**es make me sick. Read the article in question before you start posting here. Idiots.

I find it amazing how a simple blog article about incoming football freshmen recruits devolves into a bunch of tripe. Idiot woofin dawg fans with their typical bashing of TECH, Tech fans and Alums going back at the dawgs with the typical “fries” comments, postings about the new coach and his statements taken out of context and the jumps to the Southern heritage and racists overtones. Geez, you people are ridiculous. There was maybe 3 postings in here that had anything to do with this blog and discussion of the incoming freshmen. Grow up already! I hope these freshmen don’t read this blog or they might start wondering what they’ve gotten into.
