Greatest Tech team ever?

Georgia Tech’s women’s tennis team plays tonight at 6 p.m. for a berth in the NCAA championship match. The only other Tech teams to reach an NCAA final were the 2003-04 men’s basketball team, which lost to Connecticut in the Final Four at San Antonio, Texas, and the 1994 baseball team, which lost to Oklahoma in the final of the College World Series.

So the women’s tennis team got me thinking: Which teams, regardless of sport, are the greatest in Tech history? And where might Kristi Miller, Alison Silverio, Amanda Craddock, Amanda McDowell, Christy Striplin, Tarryn Rudman, Whitney McCray and Kirsten Flower fit in?

Pending the outcome of the tennis tournament, I would put the 1952 football national champion at the top of my list and the 1990 football national champion second, though you could make a case for the football teams of 1928 and 1917.

There are too many great teams and great players to compare. I’m not even sure how one can compare players in different sports.

Don’t forget the 2000 golf team with Kuchar, Molder and Matteson or the 1993 golf team with Cink and Duval that each came up just short of a national title.

Yes, those golf teams were excellent. The 2000 team lost the NCAA title in a one-hole playoff against Oklahoma State.

I think long time GT fans will tell you the ‘52 football team was the greatest ever. But for the Women to win a championship decided by play and not by vote would rank them up there. Go Jackettes!

And Mike, I’m trying to find out any word on whether Critt and Thadeous are leaning to staying in the draft or coming back next year. Any word and what’s the deadline for their decision?

What about the 1990 football team that did win a national title??

84 football and 85 men’s hoops for sentimental reasons and they showed that Tech belonged with the rest of the big boys. Also give me 86 men’s hoops (Price, Salley, Hammonds, Ferrell) and the 98 football team (Hamilton, Burns, Ross, O’Leary, Fridge).

Man, there are so many “great” teams to choose from. With the “un-bee-lievable” sports history at Trek, who can really pick one team. All of those underachieving baseball teams really were great. How many national titles did they win? How many times did they go to Omaha? And all those “great” golfers? How many national titles do they have? Sad to think that the “great” 1990 national championship team shared it with Colorado. Wow, such tradition, couldn’t even win an outright title. Way to go, dorks!

Since Tech has never won an NCAA championship of any kind in their illustrious history I am not sure any of their teams qualify as Great.

Certainly if the 90 football team that won the CO-Championship with a tie could not the best Tech has ever had. If so how pitiful.

By the way GT80 the Jacketts will not win the national championship in Tennis. Even if they get to the finals they can mail it in to Stanford. Count on it

Well, Tech beat Stanford earlier this year, there’s no reason to think they can’t beat them again. Either way, UCLA’s up right now 2-1, so assuming we beat Cal tonight, we should have a good chance. Wonder who Cal had to get through to get here though…

LoveMyButtsniffers,

I knew some moron dawg fan would jump on this blog and dispute our NC’s. You guys are so jealous we have 4 NCs and you have two (yes, you got a split in ‘42) in football. That is what’s pitiful. You know, before CMR arrived, ugag hadn’t even won an SEC championship for TWENTY YEARS!!

Face it chump, we won those NC’s and were the only undefeated team in 1990 with a ton of controversy around Colorado being there, not us. Facts are facts and it’s written in history.

Most people (who were around then) seem to feel the `52 football team was the best. In terms of their record - 12-0 - there can be little argument. But from a literal point of view The TEAM, in my view, means the players on that team. And the team that had the greatest array of talent was unquestionably the 1951 squad which had only a tie with Duke to mar its outstanding 11-0-1 record.

The 51 team had every player on the52 team PLUS First Team All Americans Ray Beck and Lamar Wheat. They also had All SEC Lum Snyder (OT) and Darrell Crawford (QB), along with outstanding seniors Pete Ferris and Sid Williams (DEs).

The 51 team sort of came out of the blue, not being ranked until their two victories over Florida and SMU. Whereas the media was aware of the52 team and ranked us Third pre-season.

I guess were splitting hairs with this argument. I only wish we could come up with something approaching those teams greatness under Chan Gailey. Who knows? Maybe a great, or near great, team is working out over at the Flats right now. I think most people will be surprised at how good this team will be.

The 1990 football team first. Why? They were playing in a different era where passing and competition was more spread out. As history marches what Bobby Ross did seems pretty incredible. Believe it or not Gailey is starting to follow the same formula. Yes the 1952 Team was great probably second. As for Talent Pepper Rodgers 1978 team may have been the best but we see what happened there due to no passing history at that time and of course the free reeling discipline. The 1985 Basketball team may have been the best as well. The competition was fierce in the ACC and Nationally then. Don’t forget players did’nt bolt of the NBA so the Patrick Ewings stayed. This football team the next two years could also make the list.

Please. Best Tech team ever? It’s women. Have you forgotten how so many of you buzzers decried the number of womens’ and so-called “minor” sports non-mythical NCs of that Athens school? So, all of a sudden a womens’ tennis team is important? How ironic that it’s the jackettes that may win one. Well, enjoy your first ever (maybe), while we shoot for our 24th.

To lovemydawg. Talk about an idiot. You predict tennis the same way all you ugag fans predict football! You got someone winning before the game is played. I think the the 1917 was the best team ever because we got to win the NC while every other able bodied young male was off fighting in the World War.

Georgia didn’t field a team those years because, as usual, their priorities are in the wrong place.

Way to go Lady Jackets. Good job on winning the indoor and outdoor in the same season. They put up a fight and it basically came down to the last match both tonight and last night.

I don’t know how you can compare teams in different sports and different eras, but there is no doubt that we are happy to have this group of champions represent GT.

Spike…you have no room to brag. UGA can win tennis titles and gymnastic titles, but you fail in the football department. A few SEC titles and 1 national title in 90 years does not make a powerhouse.

Yes, UGA is very dominating at gymnastics (ladies) and tennis, and you should be proud of these accomplishments. I had the opportunity to visit the Magill Tennis center on Sat with courtside seats to watch IL and OSU battle it out. You have a very nice facility and you should be proud.

Spike: you are not dominating on the gridiron nor in total titles. If you want to talk titles, let’s talk about GT’s national football titles as compared to your 1 national title, which was purely by the grace of Belue to Scott.

When you beat OU’s 47 game winning streak or claim 9 national football titles, then you have something to talk about. When you exceed Alabama’s 12 national football titles, then you can shoot your mouth off; otherwise, put a lid on it.

By the way 3 Pac-10 teams still lead in overall national titles including UCLA, Stanford, and USC..just look it up on the NCAA site.

At least gdawginkalamazoo showed some class by wishing GT good luck. Every fan at UGA needs to take a page from his book and show some class, then maybe, just maybe you will enter the greatness of programs like USC, ND, or even OU…then again, maybe not.

IN THIS ORDER: ‘52 FOOTBALL ‘04 MEN’S BASKETBALL(A DIFFERENT LEADING SCORER OF EVERY NCAA TOURNY GAME) ‘90 FOOTBALL ‘94 BASEBALL(GARCIPARRA, VERITEK, ETC.) ‘85-‘86 MEN’S BASKETBALL(PRICE, SALLEY) I’M NOT SURE WHERE TO PUT THIS YEAR’S WOMEN’S TEAM OR THE GREAT MEN’S GOLF TEAMS BECAUSE THEY ARE A MORE INDIVIDUAL SPORT.

As the name implies, you know where my heart is, but I am proud that the state of Georgia is thought enough of to pull in so many great athletes from other states. Even though I have to tip my hat to UGA for their titles, generally speaking, both schools are more than competitive year in and out in their respective programs.

As the name implies, you can see where my loyalties lie, but I have to admit that I am proud so many great athletes from around the country pick a school in the state of Georgia to attend. UGA does have more tiltes, but both schools are generally represented well in all of their respected programs.

I am a UGA fan and honestly do not mind seeing Tech struggle in sports, especially football, basketball and baseball

However, I would like to say congratulations to Bryan Shelton. I had the opportunity to play a pro-am doubles match with him a few years ago at the beach. I was a college tennis player and could stay on the court, but was in no way a match for Shelton’s talent. Shelton was just the way he was when I used to watch him play on t.v. He was very genuine and gracious, actually played hard and did not act like he wanted to be somewhere else.

I for one am very happy that he has found success after his playing career. It could not happen to a nicer guy. Congratulations.

Sooner Schooner:

Yes, UGA has a great gymnastics and men’s tennis program, but you said that UGA is not a dominating football program. Actually, under Coach Richt, UGA is the most dominant football program in the most difficult conference. Here are the facts:

Only four or five teams in the nation (out of 119)have won more games than UGA in the 21st century.

No SEC school has won more games than UGA during this span (The SEC is ALWAYS in the argument of “which is the toughest football confereence” The Big 12 and ACC are rarely in this argument.

Winning games is a pretty good measure of a team’s success.

No SEC School has won more SEC titles and been to more SEC title games than UGA this century.

UGA finished in the top 10 four out of the past five years (a feat that very very few programs in the nation, including the Sooners, tech (I hate to even lump tech in with these storied programs), Miami, Alabama, FSU, Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Penn State. I guess ALL of these programs are horrible.

It is OK for you to be jealous and even be a UGA basher, but to call UGA Football mediocre, isn’t grounded in any real fact.

Tech’s women’s tennis team: EASILY THE BEST TEAM EVER FOR THE JACKETS!!!

By gte578e

May 24, 2007 9:25 AM | Link to this

Gotta be the 1917 football team. They were coached by one of the top five most legendary coaches in any sport of all time. The same team also changed the face of college football and forced good teams to start playing other good teams, as opposed to 8 games against the Sisters of the Poor U. Finally, this was the team that, a year earlier, set one of the records in sports that will NEVER be broken (albeit against Sisters of the Poor Cumberland)!

Poor ‘j’. The tie at UNC in 1990 came only because we had 5 turnovers I believe. We had nearly 500 total yards vs their 150 yds also. We dominated that whole year - won big at UGA and beat Nebraska soundly in the bowl. 1990 was the best team ever. This year’s girls tennis team is a close second.

By gtpride

May 24, 2007 5:02 PM | Link to this

Yep, in 1917 we cleaned up while Georgia cancelled the season to fight the war.

And a year earlier that same team established the all time most unsportsmanlike and disgraceful records in sports. 222-0. Just think about what that game would look like. Really, just imagine it. Thirty one touchdowns against a school that had discontinued its football program before the season. A TD every 2 minutes against a scrub team. What a bunch of a-holes.

Ironic that uga fans come on to a Tech board to claim our 1917 and 1990 NCs don’t count because of an ongoing war and a share of the title/imperfect record, respectively. Last time I checked, uga’s first claimed NC in 1942 was:

1) During a war 2) A shared title 3) A one loss season

And please don’t question Tech’s commitment to serve the nation in war because we allowed those who had not been drafted to participate in football during WWI. Our sole retired jersey and Heisman runner-up as a freshman in 1942 gave his life in action, as have many other students and alumni.
