Hard to explain Jackets

Just finished all my hacking for the paper, and I’m still straining for the words to explain what happened in the United Center.

Fellas, how about a box out? Box out, anyone?

Beyond the obvious, that Tech had no business being out-rebounded by UNLV, which I already wrote plenty about for the paper, there are other ways to look at this.

When you play a 28-win team, even if it’s not from a BCS conference, and your two leading scorers give you 8 points apiece, you’re in trouble. Thaddeus Young looked like he was shot out of a cannon at the beginning of the game while missing his first three shots. “I missed the first three shots, but that didn’t take away from my game. They were a good defensive pressure team,” he said. “Down the stretch, they made better plays.”

That’s true. But Javaris Crittenton played a poor game today. Beyond going scoreless in the first half, his emotions got the best of him several times. I thought he was going to explode. Hewitt put the ball in West’s hands a little more than usual.

Javaris’ first job is to run the team, and he didn’t do that well. As former UCLA coach Steve Lavin told me for a story the other day about freshmen, pressure is one thing and it can be bad enough. But when the point guard is a freshman, and he’s prone to emotion, it can be a lethal combination.

Alade Aminu was Tech’s best player today, but when you get to the end of the season and you’re in the NCAA tournament and your best center is a guy who wasn’t even in the rotation for the first half of the season, you’re probably still a team searching for itself. Hewitt was not pleased at all with starter Ra’Sean Dickey. He played just 11 minutes, and part of that was because Aminu fouled out. Alade picked up two quickies early in the second, but the worst call was when he was whistled in the first half on the shot block. That was clean. Peacock, who was the starter at the beginning of the season, plays a little more wisely than Aminu, but is not as explosive or long.

The officiating was dubious I thought. I can remember a traveling call against Jeremis Smith that I was unsure of, one against Peacock that definitely was not, the phantom block/foul call on Aminu, and two balls right in front of me in the first half that were called out on Tech when they went out off UNLV players. Bad game for the officiating crew, and I’d say that if Tech won.

Tech didn’t lose because of the officials, though, or because UNLV hit seven more free throws. The Jackets lost because they were beaten on the boards, which never should have happened, and because Javaris didn’t run the team very well.

UNLV is going to beat Wisconsin, which will make Tech fans feel even worse.

It was a close game, could have gone either way. Very mixed seeason for Tech, hoped fo a better outcome today. Looking forward to next season, Hewitt is still the man!

I’m always a Tech man, but this team did not play like they wanted to win! I think the coach and player should feel bad with the effort. They really looked so disorganized (like they had never played together). They need to look at game films of NC or NC St or Maryland. That would show them how to move. They are going to have to get a lot smarter. They make enough mental errors ot help the other team in every game. Coach needs to go back to basics. Should have finished much stronger. They appeared to get worst as the season went along.

AT this point, I don’t care if Young and Crit don’t come back. neither will be lottery picks, and both will sit on the bench in the pros for 3-4 years. Crit had a good year, but Young was a disappointment. Maybe too much was expected of him. Dickey gets worse and worse. Maybe he will transfer. Morrow disappears too frequently - he won’t mix it up. Smith is a real workhorse. He will be welcomed back. There is a lot of talent coming back next year even with out Crit and Young. But I’m not getting my hopes up. On to baseball and maybe Omaha!!!

They will be fine!!! Losing L. Clinch hurt in so many ways. With a piont guard, shooting guard, and McD’s power foward coming in next year, WE WILL contend for the ACC and Final Four!!!

The Jackets cannot Finish! Blame it on coaching or player execution. While Tech is much better than last year, they still lack the killer competitive instinct to execute the critical play on both ends of the court late in the game to secure the W. How many games was Tech tied or ahead around the 2 minute mark and end of losing - including this game. The Virginia game is probably the most noteable. We will be back stronger next year. While we will miss Mario, our Freshman will no longer be Freshman, more mature, seasoned and hungry.

How about COVERING THE THREE-POINT SHOOTERS!!! The rest of America knew UNLV was going to pump up some treys and Tech didn’t bother to run at their shooters. Knock’em down. Take the foul and throw the rhythm off. Poor coaching on the defensive end.

Some of you guys are the dumbest f*** ever. I know i am the biggest tech fan in here, for a fact, and some of you guys are just straight up stupid. 1st off, how can you say thad wasn’t good, yeah he had some bad games, today for example, but he showed complete takeover ability in games , (UGA, UNC, Wake.) Neither should go pro, and that’s not because of talent, it’s because they need another year under their belt, and one more could really help them, and whoever the hell said they will sit on the bench for 3-4 years, shut up, cause you obviously do not know what the hell you are talking about, Thad has more upside than any player in the acc, and the only one close is Brandan Wright. Crittenton is 6-5, which everybody loves about him. He needs to work on his ballhandling, but that can be done in one summer, and he can truly be a dominating point guard when he does. If him and Thad both stay, We’ll lose Mario, which will hurt, but D’andre can also be a shutdown defender, so next year if they stay, we will start the same 5, but Alade, Zach, D’Andre, Faye and of course Clinch will be back, and he could start over morrow, and then throw in Storrs(wont play), Maurice Miller and Gani Lawal, who will both play, and we will be the deepest team in the nation, and for those uga fans who dont feel like counting that, it is 12 deep. And we will beat UGA in football, just wait until Taylor lights the f*** out of yalls secondary, losing calvin of course hurts, but Greg Smith is very underrated, and we have a hell of a recruiting class coming in, next year it’s a sweep, football close W, basketball, not close, and great you made the nit, so did f*** nc state, they didn’t do s** in acc regular season

I have at least one more game to go to here in Colorado Springs on Monday. As disappointing as the Tech loss was it would be nice to see USAFA light up UGAg out here. Been reading the UGA blog and all they are talking about is the altitude out here. Will see how the puppies handle being at 7000 feet with only a day or so to adapt. Took me almost 2 weeks to adjust.

Hopefully we can fill up Clune Arena and run the bullpups out of town. Air Force is hard to beat at home anyway. they are 30-1 over the past 2+ seasons.

Now I get to start following Beesball from way out here. See they blanked BC today.

Hey Jake sounds like you need some fresh air. Take some time off and come skiiing in the Rockies. The powder is awesome this year.

On the lighter side Thad did great this year. As a freshman I expected him and Crit to have up and down games. You have to remember Crit is only playing his second year at the point and CPH had Thad at a position he had never played before with a completely different role.

I hope they both come back, but if for some reason they don’t we are reloading with the class coming in along with the depth we already had.

Right on Dave, this team needs to be coached not just how to play, but how to WIN. They just dont recognize the critical game opportunities, and squander them everytime with mental errors. fixable though.

UNLV was WAY underestimated. We didn’t even play our “A” game today (and neither did GT for that matter). Kevin Kruger no pts from the field?! Your lucky we didn’t open it up in the 2nd half on you. We play stronger in the 2nd half usually. Gaston and Anthony are good on the D, and Wendel White helps on the boards as well. GT got some nice running going at the end of the 1st half, and when they made the comeback in the 2nd half.

All the critics, and on the GT Boards, people are in shock. They all predicted to roll over the lil ol Mountain West Conf team. Comments like: Our big men will dominate! They won’t be able to stop our guards! Today, experienced seniors trumped young freshmen.

Living in VA, I watch a lot of ACC ball. GT has a talented and young team. As long as players don’t pack in and leave, you will have a fantastic team over the next 2-3 years.

Perhaps next time, you won’t be so arrogant.

People just need to calm down. Tech is simply young and immature, and several players lack post-season experience. They’ll be better next year. As poorly as Tech played though, remember that they were the 10 seed and were “supposed” to lose this game.

Dawg fans kill me. “We’re still playing.” That’s priceless. Pssst, you’re in the NIT, ok? And great, UGA athletics are generally better than Tech’s. The school’s only 3 times the size with Communications and Theoryof Sports majors, so, you should be embarrased if you weren’t generally better than Tech.

Still, in the big men’s sports, Football, Basketball, and Baseball, only in football does UGA consistently outperform Tech. Enjoy it, because other than that and women’s gymnastics and basketball, you’re really not that far ahead.

As far as Tech’s b-ball season goes, pretty much what we could have expected. A young team, with little killer instinct, and an appetite for turnovers. They’ll be better next year, probably top 4 ACC, and we should expect a final 8 caliber team next year.

As for football, now that we may have an actual quarterback, and one of the top 20 national recruiting classes, I’d say we have a shot at a pretty good season, victories at UGA and ND are not out of the question.

For you GA fans, after what Harrick did to your basketball program, you should be happy with your team’s progress. They’re going to be legitimate contenders in the SEC next year and maybe years to come.

This isn’t the first time the Paul Hewitt Jackets have been tight and tentative and too afraid of making a mistake to play basketball. When was the last time you saw Hewitt’s team look like they were enjoying themselves? They’re consistently over-coached, and therefore usually play way below their potential. Hewitt is an impressive person, and I like his manner, and his personality, and the way he talks about the players and the game. But he’s not a very good coach at this level. There, I said it.

By Frontman

March 17, 2007 8:14 AM | Link to this

Greg, you’re joking when you say Tech is over-coached, right? There is no semblance of a clue in the half-court set, and they typically show no discipline at all on the defensive side. Yesterday was a prime example. On the bright side, you can count on Messrs. Crittenton and Young being back. Sorry, guys, but you’re nowhere close to being ready for the NBA. Coach Hewitt, how about a post-season win next year? It’s been 2 years now, buddy, and I’m talking about ACC tourney, NIT, or NCAA. My patience is wearing really thin at this point. And, please just bench Dickey. He blows.

It is not the players, it’s the coach. they can only do as much or as little as they are taught. letting the players hit the court and try to improvise an offense will fail every time.

Give paul hewitt 12 mdonalds all americans, and he’ll get you 4th place in the ACC. it IS that obvious.

Yesterday’s game was very dissapointing because it appears that Javaris had matured in the season’s second half and the team goes as he goes. That was undone yesterday but I believe that Javaris will learn from this and we will have a very solid team next year. Most good NCAA teams have 2 guards and we really could have used Lewis Clinch yesterday. UNLV put all their effort into guarding Javaris and he did not work around that and make his teammates succussfull. As far as Hewitt goes, I think he is still learning as a coach. I believe he recruited character guys his first 3-4 years and found out (he stated such) he needed a higher talent level to compete in the ACC. He has gone for talent lately and is learning he needs more character guys. I believe in Hewitt and that he will eventually get the consistency in the program with upper classmen showing the way on the court with effort and teamwork (aka Duke). Jeremis and Mario are the guys in those places but have too many holes in their games. And I agree that the GT/UNLV winner will take down Wisconsin. I was looking forward to the sweet 16. For all you UGA naysayers who like to get on GT boards - don’t you guys have anything better to do? It’s pretty pathetic. GO JACKETS!

We all hoped for another 2004 style run. We looked at the talent and saw about as much as was here then, but we all forgot that was an upperclassman dominated team. Yeah, some teams depend on freshman for a lot, but they also have at least a couple of solid upperclassmen in their top 7 players to provide stability. Mario West was our only guy like that, and he wasn’t enough, you need another one as well. This team was far too moody in its play.

All of us are a little disappointed today, however, the sun rose - as expected - and the future is bright.

I’m proud that Paul Hewitt is the GT b-ball coach and will continue to support him. I think that GT will be considerably better next year. That being said, I think that Coach Hewitt would be well advised to look at his recriting prioities: there is more to creating a successful team than recruiting “long and athletic” players. It would be nice to have a couple of guys coming in that actually know how to play the game! Crittendon will eventually be a very good poin guard. But, how many more victories would GT have had this year had they had a competent back-up point guard (UNC’s Bobby Frasor comes to mind) to run the team for awhile when Crit was in foul trouble or just off his game? I absolutely love Mario West but he can’t run a team. Hopefully, Crit will quickly learn (as Jack did after his up-and-down frosh season) that his primary job is to get the ball to guys when they are in a position to score. Hopefully, GT’s big men will learn to pass like NC State’s big guys do. I was impressed eith GT recruit Gani Lawal but his game is so similar to what GT already has (long and athletic), I wonder how much an impact he will have. Good basketball teams are like a puzzle… different pieces must be fit together.

I did not see the game yesterday. But based on articles in paper today plus the blogs, it’s obvious to me that a good thing for this team next year would be to schedule 10 of the first 12 games on the road. These guys are a group that have a head case. They’re prepped in the back of their minds that when playing away something bad will befall them. What I totally cannot understand is how can a team come out sluggish in the “Big Dance”. Other teams not there would give each of their eye teeth to be there. It’s one thing to miss shots, that’s a part of the game, but not to bust your rear ends getting rebounds is inexcusable. To me, it’s not as much a reflection of the head coach, but more of a reflection of the character of the players. There is something wrong with the players when from the outside, where I am, it seems the coach has to “jack” these guys up at virtually every halftime. The “jack” when used all the time loses its affect.

The only way a team without an offensive scheme can win consistently is to hustle so much on defense and to be so smart defensively that it takes the other team out of their game. Unfortunately, this never happened as our players were 1)Not smart enough 2)Didn’t have enough heart 3)Weren’t coached well enough.

If Mike Montgomery were coaching this collection of talent (he’s available, D-Rad!), we would have beaten UNLV by 10, and would beat Wisconsin tomorrow by at least 8.

Cut our losses and lose Hewitt now.

Forgive my ignorance, but do we have any NCAA tourney wins since we beat OK State three years ago?

By Jake

Actually Malone, we do have an NCAA tournament win since the OK state win in the final four. The next year, we were a 4 seed, you dont know anything about tech. Hewitt is a good coach, I agree our half court sets were not good this year, but we also had a Freshman running them. J Critt was still a great point guard though, in his 2nd year he will run the half court O a lot better, and we will make a run to the elite 8, at least. Oh, and as for you Malone, we beat George Washington, but then lost to Frnasisco Garcia and Louisville.

Jay, we are happy with the Dawgs progress; basically, the program had to rebuild after the Harrick debacle. The NIT is a just reward for this Georgia team this year; next year maybe the Big Dance.

Without reflecting on the Tech loss, had Georgia made it to the NCAA tourney as one of the last place teams, and lost the first game, what would have been the point? The NIT is the right fit this year.

Thank God Duke lost before we did or else we would be the weakes team in the tourney from the ACC. Hey, we were a 10 seed for a reason and UNLV a 7 for the same reason. Looking forward to next year already. I think Javaris and Thad both realize they have more work to do and will want to get rid of that bad taste left from their last game of the year. We have more talent than Duke on the team already and more talent than Duke coming in. Challenging for ACC title next year should be within reason. Go Jackets.

I think Coach Hewitt was thinking something like this: “Wow, Javaris is playing very tentatively out there and looks lost. Too bad point guard is the one position where I don’t have a back up. Wish Austin Jackson hadn’t decided to play baseball.”

Don’t mean this as a knock for Mario, who showed great leadership throughout the season in getting Tech to the NCAA’s, but he’s not a point guard. Tech has gone as JC has gone all season, and today he looked like a freshmen. Hope he and Young come back to make next years team a powerhouse but with Alade Aminu coming on, Clinch coming back and another solid recruiting class coming in Tech will be just fine either way. ARE YOU TIRED OF THIS … “WE’RE ONE YEAR AWAY” ATTITUDE?

I sure am. Damn tired of it. We have TOO much talent to emotionally beg for a win during each game. Honestly, look at our roster … how are we out in round 1?

THE NBA — TY and JC return. Fundamentally, emotionally they are definitely not ready. They should be stand-out leaders on their college teams. That’s certainly not the case. However, I believe we could see a quantum leap next year. But, the reality is that the NBA not a “fundamentals & emotional” draft, it’s a “potential” draft. So, TY & JC could ride the pine for 2 or 3 years.

THE POTENTIAL — I think this applies to the players and the coaches. They have ALL underachieved. •Dickey is the poster child for this.

•Smith needs to take his pre-season/practice confidence and use it in games. He had 20-something against Memphis — that game was his peak. What happened?

• A-Mo had a real down year vs. sophmore campaign. The back was an issue, but injuries part of game. With Clinch back, he needs to shoot 45% from 3pt range when he’s called upon. Be the best marksman in the country next year, A-MO!

• Aminu needs consistent focus on the game, starting from pre-season, not just mid-season.

•Clinch will keep his eligibility and bring an attitude and “let my game do the talking” style. He opens offense much better than A-Mo at the #2 spot.

•Peacock was the brightest of all newcomers. Really. He shot enough 3s to keep defenses honest. He chased point guards 25ft out. Hit mid-range jumpers. Rebounded strong. Has concrete-grip hands. Made reliable passes. I think he’s the ideal college recruit. Very talented, with great upside, and likely to stay 4 years.

•Bell impressed with his take advantage of every opportunity attitude. Maybe replaces West’s spirit of play.

•Faye needs to get MUCH stronger. He’s got the body type to create some problems — but not sure if it’s for us or the opposing team. Next year will tell.

•Diaw is really the odd man out, and should probably transfer if he wants playing time.

THE NEWBIES •Lawal will be a great addition. Maybe a mixture of Dickey/Peacock/Smith. Nice inside moves, with dunking power, and a little mid-range touch. Should be very good on the college level. Hope he’s coachable.

•Moore should help tremendously as a backup. A great relief option, but still, a freshmen to break in to ACC.

•Causey could challenge Moore because of his 3yrs of experience, and small role at Georgetown his FR year.

•Sheehan could be an interesting addition. Strength could be the main concern. Hope he’s watching Faye and Aminu to see how he can improve on their learning curve.

THE TEAM FOR 07-08

C: Dickey (he must pay for play; I think he improves) Aminu (challenges for time) Peacock (may be the most val to program over 4 yrs) Sheehan (needs to bring something others do not)

PF: Smith (I guess it’s his job to lose; confidence!) Lawal (great FR; can we get 7pts, 5 rebs?) Peacock (his style could work as PF spot, too)

SF: Young (not READY for NBA; “potential” may take him) Bell (could bring “West’s” mentality; not as athletic) Faye (If he can hit 3s, time will increase)

SG: Clinch (his spot to have back; style opens court) Morrow (become MARKSMAN: 45% 3s next yr, please! Storrs (perfect place for him to be brought slowly)

PG: JC (his departure would hurt WAY more than TY’s) Moore (perfect backup to JC; will have FR bumps) Causey (Georgetown transfer could surprise) Diaw (an option in tough situations; very lim. time)

HEWITT — If all this talent comes back, we’ll be: •Deep in every position •Have a team of seniors •Have ACC and All-America candidates •Have a McDonald’s All-America Freshmen •Have a former 3pt % leader in ACC •Have NCAA tournament experience •Have team’s 7 leading scorers back •Have team’s 5 leading rebounders back •Have team’s 2 leading assist men back

If Hewitt cannot make this work, then I think the problem is clear.

I ADMIT I am a WEENIE. I HAVE THE IQ OF A COW CHIP. I got accepted to Georgia on an academic scholarship. I graduated Magna Cum Laude. I work for Roto Rooter during the day and I flip burgers at night. I married my 2nd cousin Billy Bob. And the only way I can feel a little less inferior about myself is to try to kick Georgia Tech Fans while their down. What a Life.

Can you no good traitors start hating someone else now and leave me alone. I didn’t know it was fourth down. I didn’t know I was suppose to beat those frightening dawgs. I didn’t know I was suppose to pass my classes. Also, anyone know a 7/11 that has an opening?
