How can Tech get in?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Pretty good stuff Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. Javaris Crittenton, who’s emerging like a rocket, and perhaps the No. 1 backcourt in the nation in Sean Singletary and J.R. Reynolds.
Tech can win this game, and I have a hunch somebody other than Crittenton could be the main reason why.
But if Tech loses to finish the season with just one road win, would the Jackets need to beat both North Carolina and Boston College at home AND win at least one game in the ACC tournament to get into the NCAA tournament? Or would beating UNC and BC be enough?
If Tech wins just one of its final three, what would the Jackets need to do in the ACC tournament?
Hmm.

I’d say having only lost to UVA and Duke on the road to finish the year 7-2, would get us in. Especially with a win over UNC, there’s no way. Regardless of what happens in the ACC tourney.
Beat UVA and lose to UNC only we are in. Basically, they must win one of those two games and of course beat BC.
Matt I hope those punks got there due.

Win ANY two of remaining three and Tech is in, regardless of ACC tourney. We already have several quality wins, and those would be two more. Win one of those three and it would probably take a couple of ACC tourney wins to make it. Bids to the big dance with a 7-9 conference record are few and far between.
Trivia question, Matt. What was Tech’s record at this point of the 2003-04 season? Well, I looked it up (scroll down).
(19-8, 6-7). Look familiar? Just one non-conference victory difference from this team. And at that point in time, that team was coming off of back to back home losses to WF and NCSU, and had road games at Clemson and at Duke facing them. Of course, they won out their regular season, lost a close one to Duke in the ACC tourney semifinals, and we know what happened after that. Imagine, though, that the team that was the 2004 national runner up probably would have missed the tournament all together if they had lost their next two road games.
I’m not saying this team will do anything remotely similar, but it was that huge road win at Duke on 2004 that, I believe, sparked the whole run. Tomorrow at UVA and Wed. vs. UNC should be seen as similar opportunities for this team.
Go Jackets!

Tech and UGA have—as of right now—equal chances of making the NCAA’s. Tech has a slightly better overall record and more quality wins, but UGA has a better conference record and easier regular-season opposition the rest of the way. Gotta understand, Tech fans, that winning two of the next three won’t be easy, the team’s playing two very good teams and one great team. One out of three, and then a win in the tournament, still ought to do it though…keep on playing D and let Young & Crittenden keep playing within themselves, no silly fouls.

I must be having a ‘zen’ moment…. I think I’m agreeing with a Dawg fan regarding a Tech Topic….
ChopDawg, I think you are correct. Next three games are tough for the Jackets…win 2 of 3 and they are in…win only 1 of 3 then we better have 1-2 tournament wins…lose all 3, better go to the finals of the ACC.
For the Dawgs, you are also correct. Losing Mercer was almost a death-nail. However, the NCAAs like to have close to 50% of the power conferences represented (and the SEC is one of those)….so, play strong down the stretch against teams you can beat, make a good show of the SEC tourney….. We’ll meet ya’ at the dance!!”

Shocking stats GTJJ. I agree with the road win at Duke and I think this UVA game would be similar. I for one believe TECH will win 2 out of the next 3. If TECH only wins once we can still dance with a run in the ACC Tourny. Chopdawg is right though UGA can make the tourny also. UGA has impressed me some this year. They just seem to have a nice team chemistry. With Mercer UGA makes the tourny as a 10 seed, but without him its going to be a 13 seed or not in at all. Only time will tell though. Good luck!

Can’t see this team with this schedule winning 20 games and not getting in, so I would think that any 2 wins from here on out and Tech is probably in. Win Saturday and it becomes about protecting home court and seeding for both tournaments. That said, I don’t feel good about the UVA game. It’s always a tough place to play and they have been destroying people in that building this year.
Sorry chopdawg, but Tech’s in much better shape for the tourney right now. UGA has 10 losses and no signature out of conference wins. I give them credit for showing lots of toughness this year, but I think Mercer was the final blow.

Maybe not, after watching the loss to VA today, it’s not a shoe in. Can I just say Young has got to be the dumbest player to go with a lot of talent. He was responsible for 5 straight bad plays at the end of the game. He sees stars on the other teams playing very well, and tries to emulate them by being totally selfish. He won’t give up the ball, steps out of bounds, two bad shots, turnover, etc. This team will never reach its potential with Young on the team. The best thing that could happen to Tech’s future, is for the ego driven Young go immediately to the pros.

bummer of a loss…a couple of lazy passes again late with a lead, then…
Coach calls time…Tech runs the play…and steps out of bounds…..yuk!

Besides the no call hack on Jeremis (my Tivo showed it was a horrible missed call), can’t believe Hewitt called that play for Young after the timeout. Ran right into a double-team. Javaris was also out of control on the late Offensive charging call. He also did not block out on the Surovy put back that gave Va the lead. Dickey made a horrible entry pass that led to a layup on the other end ( of which he also failed to play defense). This team has the talent but I am not sure about its’ basketball IQ. This is either poor instruction by the coaching staff or plain ol’ lack of mental toughness. Either way, the team looked very confused on both ends the last 3 minutes. Guess on the last TV timeout they thought they had the game won in the huddle. In fact, Hewiit’s comment that Va looked “Dead in the Water” is probably reflective of this. But if he actually conveyed this to a team fighting for their NCAA lives, he has to be admonished. You can’t take any team for granted at this stage…for Hewitt to say that and seeing the way they performed at crunch time really makes me wonder about the guidance of the coaching staff during game situations. I have not criticized the staff this year, but if you have the game on tape, Tech had seemingly no direction during the last 5 possesions. Can’t believe Hewitt called 2 plays for Young to get jammed at the baseline , especially after a timeout. This has got to be Young , or else the Va staff was way ahead of Hewitt and his calls. They can win the next 2, but it’s going to be a very difficult chore. If they split, it better be Carolina because that will give them 3 wins over top 20 RPI teams and 7 top 50 wins. But they really put their backs against the wall by not closing this one out. Smith made some mistakes late, but his effort is 5 times that of Dickey and Morrow. They are Jr’s and their leadership or lack there of becomes evident in crunch time. Virginia is a good team, but Tech never should have lost this one. Rather see this team lose round one of the NCAA’s than lose in the NIT quarterfinals. But after today, that may not be an option.

I couldn’t agree more with the last post. This team has no heart, no IQ, and the coaching staff consistently doesn’t give this team a chance to win. Makes me sick watching them. Just plain horrible basketball.

We (Tech) are not going to make it. I am continually amazed by those who think we will. The ACC will be lucky to get 5 in and we will not get in with a losing record in the ACC - even if we win a round or two in the ACC tourney.

I find little to disagree with in the previous posts: GT did look confused on offense in the last three minutes. That being said, I also believe that they played their best road game of the season. After falling behind (as usual) in the first seven minutes, the Jackets showed a lot of heart in battling back and absolutely strangling the Cavs for the next 25 minutes. I wonder why Coach Hewitt called off the press.

The Tarheels loss last night is going to hurt the jackets. NC is not going to lose two in a row! GT will not have a winning record, or 20 wins. Bulldogs, your on the bubble big time also without 20 wins. Hey you can win the NIT. Go Buckeys.
