Defense can end road skid
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s hard not to belabor an obvious point, but when it’s so blatant …
If Georgia Tech is going to end its 17-game road losing streak Tuesday night in Tallahassee, the Jackets are probably going to do it with defense. Maybe I’m wrong, as Tech’s best offensive game in ACC play came in an 88-80 win over FSU in Atlanta last month, but if I had to bet, defense will matter more Tuesday.
There are plenty of shooting percentage numbers to support the importance of defense in Tech’s three-game winning streak, and many are in the story that will be in tomorrow’s paper (and online this evening).
I didn’t include this one: In the three game winning streak, Tech has outscored Clemson 27-15, N.C. State 23-11 and UConn 20-12 in points off turnovers.
The two most important aspects of this winning streak in my mind are defense, and the fact different players are stepping up nightly to support Crittenton and Young on offense.
Yes, Paul Hewitt would rest easier if he could count on Ra’Sean Dickey showing up every game to score 14 points and grab eight rebounds, but that’s not happening. Other than Crittenton and Young, who knows who’s going to get it done on offense from one game to the next.
But somebody is getting it done in each game, and two players buried on the bench for the longest time, D’Andre Bell and Alade Aminu are part of that push. Bell’s scored 13 points in the past two games to match his total from the first 22 games. Aminu, as most surely know, did not play in the first eight ACC games and then scored 10 against Clemson and 10 against N.C. State.
These are good ingredients. But the stock of this stew will be defense, good or bad.
Tech has to win on the road to get in the NCAA tournament, and after this they’re at Duke on Sunday and at Virginia next week. FSU will be without PG Toney Douglas (broken hand), and forward Al Thornton (18.8 ppg) has a sore back.
The time is right.

Need to get it done tomorrow night. A win tomorrow and at Duke, and beating WF at home will go a long way to getting us dancing. The team is starting to develop a swagger, it could not come at a better time.

this team should not be developing any swagger yet. The game against Uconn was not a real gauge of how good we were, but how bad they were. There were certainly spots of sunlight for us and it is something to build on, but this team consistently plays poorly when they are not desparate for a win. They seem to easily fall back into bad habits when they don’t have their backs against the wall. I really want to see this team live up to its potential, but am far from excited about the chances of finally getting a road win against an improving FSU and a desparate Duke. I hope my worries are misplaced, Go Jackets!

Watched the game on television Sunday. The Georgia Dorm really isn’t a home advantage and I personally have trouble with flashbacks of Falcon games gone bad in that place. I think I saw a few Saint fans with the funeral umbrellas waking up in the back rows just as they were going off the air. Billy Packer is a good reason to suffer the polyester effect of our largest public facility in the flesh as opposed to listening to how stupid every human being within radar range is in his opinion. I noticed his political correctness in leaving the head coaches of both teams out of his IQ test. These two poor stooges were wrestling with an incurable disease of players not knowing where or what time it was on the court. He, Packer, however was a clear versioned observer that any moment may have jumped over the announcer’s table and showed these bums what real basketball is all about. His two handed set shot would have wowed them and his basketball awareness that is no longer part of the game as he put it would have been just fine, even if the players of today have gotten off the tricycles and into racecars. The only thing I could be happy about was it wasn’t DV and we weren’t playing one of General Bobby Knight’s teams or Dook.

Hey cltgtfan, don’t be so negative. I was at the game Sunday and saw a UCONN team that could shoot well because we were playing some pretty fierce D. As Wink stated, its all about the D. Against NC State, we struggled on O, as we have most of the conference schedule, but our D, while still not flawless, was relentless and finally wore them out. Same thing with Clemson. We are going to have to win ugly with hard nose hacking D, the way Duke and Maryland always did it, because without Clinch we really have 1 outside shooter. Maybe 2 if you count Crit and Young as 1/2’s each. Has anyone noticed that we’ve gotten technicals against the opposing teams coach’s in the last 3 wins? Could it be that our hard nose hacking style D is frustrating to play against? I think so. Keep it up and we will be in the Dance.

Aren’t we all expert coaches?? Don’t I wish we were in the SEC or Big East. We could be dancing already. RPI doesn’t mean squat in college basketball. Anyone can beat anyone on any given night. Just look at George Mason and their 2006 RPI rating before the tourney started. We win, we dance. Season isn’t over until we loose in ACC tourney. Until then, we always have a shot to dance.

First, I am glad to see the naysayers laying off Hewitt since we’ve won 3 in a row. I agree that D is key. We still have a difficult schedule with 3 road games (FSU, Duke & UVA) and 3 home games (WFU, UNC,& BC)If we can figure out some way to win 4, we wind up at 8-8 and 20 wins going into the tournament. That ought to get us to the dance. If we go 3-3 or worse, we’ll have to win one or even two in Tampa to have a shot. Incidentally, if you’ve been following the Sagarin Ratings, we’ve been hanging around 25 for several weeks and are 3-4 against top 25 teams and 6-5 against top 50 teams. Now if we just had a chance to replay the Miami and WFU losses, we’d be home free.

I think the last 3 games are a good measure of how we are playing. Defense has been the best we’ve seen all season long. Our offense is getting sharper. We’re getting to the hole a lot more than we had been. The offense is also moving more. We did a whole lot of standing around this season. I think that is in part because Critt didn’t know how to run the offense effectively. Now he’s stepped up and is taking charge. He’s made some silly mistakes but he is a freshman and that is going to happen.
The D is solid and whether it’s Dickey under there or not, the teams we have been playing have been forced to do a lot more outside shooting. If we box out and stay on them, we should win the next 3 games.
They just need to continue to play smart, play hard and play like they have the last 3 games. They have been reminiscent of the Duke game from earlier in the season. They have the talent. They just have to keep it together…

The “D” did the job.
Thornton was about to be a thorn…but thankfully Crit and Morrow made the free throws at the end!

I will admit that I have been one of those naysayers. I am also glad to admit I have been wrong about Hewitt. He has gotten his players to buy into playing defense and moving on offense. The effort and intensity on both ends of the floor have picked up.
Naysayers like me simply wanted to see improvement. Well, we have gotten it in spades. Congrats to Hewitt and his staff for righting the ship. There is still much work to be done, but the dance is certainly an achievable goal.

GT held FSU to 5 points in the 1st 15 minutes of the 2nd half…5 POINTS. They must have been doing something right on “D”. Although Thornton was out most of the 2nd half. Now 5 days off to prepare for Puke U and the Cryin’ Krzyzewski. Let’s get ‘er done, baby!
