Assessing a meltdown

You know it’s going bad when you go from saying Tech can win if Ra’Sean Dickey and Jeremis Smith show up and give the Jackets get an inside game only to have them show up and give the Jackets an inside game and they lose anyway to the ACC’s 11th place team.

Of course, Smith and Dickey didn’t get busy until the second half, when Tech attacked the basket more, got buckets, and earned 22 free throws - a sharp contrast to one attempted in the first half.

But Wake attacked the basket the whole game, and Dickey (nor anyone else) failed to slow Kyle Visser other than by fouling him. He hit 10 of 12 of those.

Ball game.

Tech scored 45 points in the second half, the Jackets’ best offensive half by far in this four-game losing streak. But they gave up 44. Couldn’t stop anybody when it mattered. A trend of late.

Without getting too deep, the Jackets don’t appear to be as athletic overall as perhaps some predicted they’d be — witness how infrequently they press when that was supposed to be so much more prevalent this season, and how they consistently succumb to dribble penetration. The absence of Lewis Clinch doesn’t help here.

And the point guard is struggling, forcing his shot and his passes (five straight failed alley-oop attempts over two games by my unofficial count).

Paul Hewitt can’t find any answers, either.

I didn’t foresee such difficulties.

I am not going to give Hewitt a pass on this one. Over the Summer he talked about these guys being a step slow on the defensive end and an inability to communicate. Seems that no headway has been made to fix these problems. We made Wake look like an NCAA caliber team last night. It is obvious that both Crittendon and Young are not ready for the next level. Crittendon dribbles too much and Young cannot dribble when gaurded or with his head up? We had minimal turnovers in the second half last night, mostly with Crittendon on the bench. I am also not going to give an forgiveness for these guys being Freshman. Look at Carolina, Duke, and across the country at teams with freshman, and you see them being developed. Not at Tech, I like Hewitt, but I wonder what the hell they are doing in practice???

I am a little confused-hasn’t Hewitt been bringing in Top 10 recruiting classes for the past four (4) years? Why does Tech continue to hover in the bottom of a top heavy ACC?

I am starting to get Cremins vibes here. For all the hoopla surrounding this program, they have been fairly mediocre (save the season where Tech was embarassed in the final game).

Wake Forest is far from being a competitive team. This loss was a sure sign that the players are either: 1. not as good as advertised, or 2. not being prepared to play the game.

Either way, we are playing ourselves out of a NIT bid right now-not that it matters.

My goodness, that Lewis Clinch must have been the second coming of Dennis Rodman. What a GREAT defender he must be. GIVE ME A BREAK! I’m a huge Tech fan and I can no longer stomach watching this team play absolutely NO DEFENSE! You have to want to play defense and it’s obvious to me that the baby Jackets don’t want to.

Im a season ticket holder and am done with this season. I will no longer support this band of losers.

Hewitt is pathetic.

I have never seen a team underachieve like this one which goes to show you can’t always depend on the “recruiting experts”. It is frustrating when you see Hewitt practically go on the floor to direct players to the spots they should be on offense and defense. They just are not getting it. I truly believe he is coaching this in practice and the players are not focused(perhaps confused) during the games which lead to breakdowns. I would like to see T. Young touch the ball on every posession when he is in the game. He should be getting 20+ per game. Morrow should also be getting more shots.

Tech is 6 - 18 in the ACC the last two years. That’s just pathetic. A season that had so much promise to start, is all but gone….Sounds like the past football season. I can’t see this team turning it around, anytime soon.

The telling moment was a slowed down Peacock standing at the perimeter on offense with the ball pointing to a spot on the court for a pick. After about a commercial break of time one of his teammates interpreted the signal and came to set the pick. I think the Wake player was so surprise that even knowing for near a minute it was coming still got caught up in it and Peacock was wide open close up for a two point jumper which he nailed unlike his foul shot shooting. It was like the moment in planet of the apes when the apes realized these humans might have some intelligence. Under the offensive basket on our side looks more like the pit of the New York Stock Exchange than an organized basketball team. Most of these ACC teams are stronger than we are too. Dickey is usually held off the boards by one elbow and when the ball comes off the board is invariably looking over an opponent’s shoulder to get the rebound. All our players are straight up and down in their stance and when the ball goes low for some reason it will go between their legs before they can get loose to catch it.

I have a class with Lewis Clinch this semester, and I’ll make sure he doesn’t look on my paper for the final exam.

The problem with Tech is Hewitt. The man may know basketball but he cannot coach. I am no expert but I think that it not hard to see that Hewitt cannot get the message over to the players. Just look at consistant inconsistancy of his past and present teams. I guess it is good to be nice but sooner or later you must pay the piper. The point guard is another Reggie Ball and unless he changes Tech will remain a second tier team.

What a disappointment - especially after suffering through last season’s misery in anticipation of 2006-2007. This team looks lost and the intensity is lacking. There is a reason why Coach K and Roy Williams win consistently - they are great coaches.

SeasonTicketHolder, no one worth the dirt he is standing on calls his team losers. You are no fan - in fact I doubt you are season ticket holder (at least not for G. You are either a coward or a liar.

People please…we are the youngest team in the ACC from 1 thru 10 players. Look it up. We don’t have a Kenny Anderson or Stephon Marbury. Pure prodigies. Kenny demoralized Bobby Hurley when they met on the court. You can look that up as well. Frankly this group is very good but they are paying dues. As a fan you either pay with them or jump ship. What is it gonna be? For me I will stick with GT and the hell with all of you…oh and Georgia.

OK let me start by saying this team is under achieving big time but i am a real tech fan unlike you band wagon fans who jumped aboard after the nationla champ run. Coach hewitt if you read these things please quit subbing when we go on a run Jarvis can play 35 mins a game as well as morrow and while i metion morrow lets get him at least 10-15 shots a game this just in he can shoot. And this is for the team dont play defense when you get behind grow some balls and play 40 mins of defense and there isnt a team in the acc yall cant beat so lets win the rest and make a run to the tourny even though not likely to happen lets hope our guys have some guts and season ticket holder email me at swingroots@yahoo.com ill buy your tickets since your such a candy a* fan go cheer for uga please you sound like one of there fans

I agree with the comments that indicate Hewitt is not getting thru to these guys.

I think some of it is the “I’m gonna get mine” syndrome in action. The “diaper dandies” are treating this season strictly as prep for the NBA - i.e who cares if we win or lose, as long as I get my stats.

And the upper-classman are happy to stand back and let the freshmen take the heat for the losses.

I would watch a team that played hard - this team does not.

Regarding Hewitt - Any coach that cannot motivate his players to play hard, regardless of style and quality of play, deserves to be canned. That is basic to coaching. Forget about the rest of it, if you can’t motivate, you’re done.

Brian Jones and Dadgum- I echo your point. Bandwagon fans have place in our family. Go back to Duke!!

Win or lose, stick by your team and hope for the best. Even if it hurts worse than a shot in the nads.

The problem I have is that Hewitt attempts to correct the problem by removing names from the backs of the jerseys. How about making some big personnell changes too!! Play those walk ons and see who sparks some consistent “D”.

By Jones

He took the names off, so when they transfer to play for a real coach, no one will (hopefully) notice.

Matt, you were at the game, yes? Why is it in the final warm ups, just minutes from the tip, the guys are running through the lay up line tossing the ball off the glass and trying to dunk it. I have never seen a team do that, and why does PH allow it? I can guarantee that when top programs warm up that close to game time it is all business. And why was MuFa not removed from the game right after he got that high school worthy tech? Sitting in ths stands last night sucked…at times I swear it looked like they had just given up.

I did not see the game & i’m sure it was like the previous 3. This team still has the loser jr. class. Clinch is gone so thats alot of offense missing. Where the h*ll is Alade? AA can’t suc as bad as R. Dickey. It looks like the talented freshman have gotten influenced by Smith & Dickey w/ the big choke. Remember we had no recruiting class that one year. Also, the jrs. didn’t mesh well w/ Jarrett, BJ, & Co. It’s Hewttits fault on the Soph. class.

Lifelong Tech fan and Hewitt supporter but I beginning to hope for this scenario:

Isiah Thomas gets fired by the Knicks. Hewitt sees an opportunity and bolts for MSG. D-Rad calls Mike Montgomery.

Think about it.

You guys are the biggest bunch of idiots I’ve seen. The fact that you are calling for Hewitt’s head shows that you have absolutely no loyalty to your school, and it definitely shows that you have no clue about the game of basketball. Our team is making mental mistakes and there is nothing our coach can do about that. It is on the players shoulders to step up and execute.

Also, if you are done with the season, please feel free to let me know and i will take the tickets off your hands.

When the point guard play improves, so will this team. And that’s on offense and defense.

Looking back on things, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that this team is struggling. Yes they have a great class of gifted Freshmen, but they are Freshmen and are looking more and more that way every game. Other than these freshmen, they have the same team that finished 11-17 last year. That’s why they still turn the ball over until it’s embarrassing. That’s why they can’t hit shots or stop others from hitting shots. They are a very athletic team but they lack mental toughness big time. It’s easy to blame Hewitt but someone needs to step up.

I still can’t get past T. Young thinking he was ready to come out of high school and into the NBA. As good as ACC competition is, he should still excel (if he’s NBA worthy).
